UK PLC The new reality by Phil Ryan

UK PLC – The new reality by Phil Ryan
I’ve been travelling around the country recently and I’ve become aware in some classic indicators that tell you a lot about the state of any country. So in this new series of articles I’ve decided to examine just a few of these indicators. To give you a brief idea of what I’m referring to I’d like you to consider the following. Many local high streets now have up to 30% of empty and shuttered shops. Larger closed shop premises are now being converted into housing. The fastest growing high street shop openings in the UK are now Pawn Shops and Money Lending outlets coming second to fast food outlets. Another huge growth sector are private bailiff firms and security firms. The biggest spike in TV advertising revenues has come from a plethora of constant afternoon and late night Loan adverts now running almost on a loop. Many local Church groups have turned into Food Banks ie they appeal locally for non-perishable foods and now run weekly drop in sessions supplying poor families with basic foods. And if this weren’t bad enough these groups are noticing the change in the financial and social makeup of these families not to mention the growing demand for assistance. Unsurprisingly there has been an exponential growth in the number of personal debt handling companies. These are the kinds of companies who combine all your debts into one monthly sum and deal with the companies you owe money to. And in a twist that I’ll explain in another article there’s also been an absolute explosion of gambling outlets including bookmakers, slot machine parlours and wall to wall TV, radio and press and poster advertising for national and local lotteries.
So to get us going I’ve picked one of these indicators at random. So let us take a quick peek at the online Personal loan sector. And let me be clear at the outset. The kind of people taking up these online loans are generally those who cannot get access to funds anywhere else due to poor credit history, no assets such as property or vehicles of worth and age and employment status. Just by Googling unsecured loans and entering a few requests I found deals depending on individual criteria starting from APR 9.9% then 175% and finally most at around 2,400% – 4,214.00%. Yes you didn’t misread those last figures. They make up the most common deals available. The most popular loans are for payday loans ie a loan to help people have funds to live on before their next pay cheque goes into their accounts. Previously most of these kind of financial acrobatics were carried out by people juggling credit cards. And of course this generally applied to the low and medium paid. However with living costs rising on all fronts the low paid net is embracing more and more people. This due in part to the fact that people’s wages are fixed and do not rise to reflect price hikes in fuel, travel, food and living accommodation expenses. And the access to credit cards has been severely reduced forcing many people into using the new high street and online ‘money supermarkets’.
So how does it work? It’s very simple to apply. You fill out a form with all your personal details on, you give the company almost complete access to your bank accounts and financial profile and within minutes they mail you an ‘offer’. Note that word. An ‘offer’. In other words virtually anyone will be offered a loan. However this ‘offer’ is often ‘time sensitive’ forcing people to make a quick decision and although it does offer access to money the rates it charges are often eye wateringly expensive. These ‘offers’ rely on a mixture of reasonable sounding language and the disingenuous ‘warnings’ regarding the fact the loans should be considered ‘short term’ only. So effectively people become trapped as they become mired in debts that they can in fact ‘service’. In other words by paying constant small amounts they can gain access to funds. But before you say they shouldn’t take up such terrible loans consider this salient fact. What else can they do? High street banks have stopped both personal and business lending to an absurd degree. The toxic criteria they now set are designed to bar most people. Just as an aside I thought I’d ask my ‘personal banker’ at a well-known high street brand for a small loan of £5,000 just to test the water for my article. Despite being in funds and having property, and being a customer of over twenty years he felt I could only have £3,000 BUT and this was almost Kafkaesque part I had to put £3,000 into my account before they would grant me the loan. Huh? I needed £3,000 but had to find £3,000 that presumably I didn’t have hence the need for the loan in the first place. Wow!
Anyway moving on. The new online loan companies are now mining a massive new client base of those who have no other avenue to funds. And let us be clear these are funds to pay for necessities and not fancy cars or restaurants. I am of course aware that it is the loan appliers own ‘choice’ to accept or not accept but despite all my thoughts of them changing jobs, moving to more affordable accommodation etc in many cases they simply cannot. They are in essence trapped by their own poor financial circumstances. And at the mercy of the high street and online loan companies who have in effect gained a client who cannot leave. And they cannot leave for the obvious fact that their financial circumstances are such that they can only pay off their loan in regular instalments – and now the hook – the instalments slowly rise and rise as the massive APR kicks in over time. As for the ‘these loans are short term only’ line put out by all these companies they know full well that anyone desperate enough to use them will struggle to leave in a short period of time. And so legally they can trap their clients into paying huge interest rates giving the loan companies huge profits and a compliant client group. Just for fun imagine borrowing £5,000 for a year at 4,000%.
So we’ll keep taking UK PLC’s pulse with a look at other indicators into what’s happening to its citizens right now on certain levels across the country. And I hope just this one tiny glimpse into the UK’s new financial success story has informed you a little. The shiny and bright online loan companies that provide money access to families and individuals with their friendly advertising and jokey campaigns. I’ll finish with the news that the boss of one of these wonderful companies recently received an award for services to the financial sector from a grateful government.

Rupert Murdoch Flying to UK to Stop Sun Going Down.

Rupert Murdoch is flying to London to meet staff at The Sun this week, after the arrests of five senior staff members over bribery allegations. The source told the AFP that Murdoch would fly to London “later in the week” and News International has said that Murdoch has given “personal assurance” that The Sun will not be closed like the News of the World.

The News of the World was closed on July in the midst of the phone hacking scandal.

News International chief executive Tom Mockridge said in an email to staff that Murdoch would stand by The Sun in the “greatest challenge” it faced.

“You should know that I have had a personal assurance today from Rupert Murdoch about his total commitment to continue to own and publish The Sun newspaper,” Mockridge said.

The Sun journalists that were arrested were deputy editor Geoff Webster, picture editor John Edwards, chief reporter John Kay, chief foreign correspondent Nick Parker and reporter John Sturgis.
News International has not made a statement on Murdoch coming to London, and neither has Murdoch himself.

Allegedly The Sun were furious at the fact that News Corp had handed over the information to police that led to the arrests.

Whitney Houston Dies Aged 48.

Whitney Houston has died at the tragically young age of 48. Her death has left the entertainment industry in shock.

Houston was found dead in her room in the Beverly Hilton yesterday. The Los Angeles police said paramedics had tried to resuscitate Houston but they were unable and she was pronounced dead at 3.55pm local time.

Houston, who was one of the biggest selling artists of the 80s and 90s, had battled drug addiction. Police also said that there was no “obvious signs” of any criminal intent.

Houston had been due to make an appearance at the Grammy Awards tonight, and had been at rehearsals, as she was to perform for her mentor Clive Davis.

Aretha Franklin said: “I just can’t talk about it now, It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen. My heart goes out to Cissy, her daughter Bobby Kris, her family and Bobby.”

Tributes have been flooding in for the singer. Mariah Cary said she was “heartbroken”

“Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston,” Carey wrote on Twitter.

“My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world.

“She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”

In a statement, Dolly Parton said: “Mine is only one of millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston.

“I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, “Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.”

Houston also starred in hit movies including The Bodyguard. She won multiple Grammys and sold millions of records.

As well as her drug addiction her 15-year marriage to Bobby Brown came to an end in 2007.

Brown told a sell-out crowd in Mississippi: “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all. Second, I would like to say, I love you Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.”

Bupa launches new Fitness Assessment

Bupa has launched a new Fitness Assessment which has been designed to help all athletes understand their fitness levels and improve their performance, from the advanced triathlete to the newly keen runner.

Previously, detailed fitness assessments were the preserve of professional athletes and Bupa’s new Fitness Assessment is the first of its kind to be made widely available to the public. The test analyses in detail the user’s fitness levels, then works with this information to identify the different types of training and exercise that will help them achieve their very best.

No matter what the fitness goal is, Bupa Fitness Assessment offers invaluable insight to improve performance. It has been developed to provide bespoke advice to amateur runners, cyclists and triathletes – or simply someone looking to use exercise as a means of losing excess weight.

Britain’s number one distance runner Mo Farah recently trialled the test and said: “I found the stats fascinating. I’ve only ever seen these types of test available for elite athletes, so it’s brilliant that everyone can now go along and find out how fit they are!”

The hour-long assessment, carried out at a specialist Bupa Centre, involves three key stages:

* A pre-fitness test to measure body composition and assess blood pressure and lung function
* A full fitness analysis, which consists of a cardio-respiratory fitness test on a cycle ergometer or treadmill, using detailed breath-by-breath gas analysis to calculate fitness levels and produce an individual o2 Max reading[1]
* A post-test consultation, which allows the user to benchmark their performance against peers and professional athletes. Advice on how to improve all round cardiovascular fitness is given as well as a comprehensive health and fitness action plan and results analysis.

The assessment is currently performed in the fitness rooms at Bupa Centres across the UK at a special introductory price of £149 (usual price £199). Further Information can be found at Bupa.co.uk/vo2max.

Dr Peter Mace, Assistant Medical Director of Bupa said: “By helping individuals understand their current exercise responses, the Fitness Assessment will give them a much clearer view of their strengths and weaknesses, but more importantly it will provide an indication of what they can do to improve their fitness and meet their goals. Bupa can ensure that you train the right way to get to where you want to be.”

London Fashion Week : The Countdown Begins!

London Fashion Week (LFW) is less than one week away and it is fair to say that I am already bubbling over in excitement. The show schedule is bursting with Legends of fashion as well as up-and-comers set to showcase their latest Autumn/Winter collections. As well as that, over 100 designer brands will take part in the exhibition, all showing off their latest and greatest pieces. It is an event I’ve always dreamt of going to and thanks to Frost Magazine, I hold an “access all areas pass”!

So, what can I expect?  Catwalk Shows, Presentations and Parties are all part of the schedule, creating the perfect stage for us British to show off our talents to the rest of the world. It is also certain to deliver some controversy, drama and headline making mayhem…although I do hope we don’t see any poor models fall on the Catwalk again. Other expectations I have are, of lots of noise, colour and eccentric people surrounding me and I cannot wait for it all to start!

Fashion-Lover, Keshini Misha, who is also writing about LFW for Frost, brought up the very good question of, What to Wear? Those three words have been running through my mind too and I’m sure most of this week will be spent selecting the perfect outfits. In fact, I have to admit that this element of fashion week is actually something I am extremely excited about. Not me stressing about what to wear but, getting to see the variety of fashion choices others will make. It is what I love most about fashion really; how people dress as an extension of themselves and their personalities. I think it is a shame to see someone dress in something for its name or for the social status it brings. It is far more interesting and impressive to see those who dress for themselves and throw outfits together in ways others wouldn’t imagine! Each day I will snap pictures of the best dressed people I see to share with you as well as fill you in on all the latest trends, hottest designers and naughtiest gossip!

Until it all begins…

Chris Moon 'Love Hearts' {Art}

Chris Moon, the self-taught British painter dubbed ‘a new art superstar’ by Harper’s Bazaar.

Chris’s first solo exhibition was a sell-out late last year and was bought by many high profile collectors as well as celebrities such as Gemma Arterton.

Chris will exhibit his most recent work – his Love Heart series – at the forthcoming Full Rabbit exhibition in Shoreditch Town hall this February.

The Love Heart series features confectionery at various stages of disintegration to tell the story of past relationships, from First Love to One Night Stand. The works range from small, limited edition pieces from £300 to larger works up to £1,500.

Audio Architecture Arts presents FULL RABBIT which will run 24th February – 11th March 2012 at Shoreditch Town Hall, London EC1V 9LT Private View 23rd February 2012, 6-9pm Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday 12pm – 6pm

Full Rabbit is a group exhibition featuring the works of UK and Chinese artists, examining the notion of fortune. The exhibition will open in London from 24th February 2012 in the vast basement vaults of Shoreditch Town Hall.

Full Rabbit will showcase a multi-disciplinary collection of solo and collaborative work previously unseen in Britain, from twelve UK based and eight Chinese artists.

The artists featuring in the show include Catherine Shakespeare Lane, the British artist who showed a triptych featuring Francis Bacon’s dead body at James Birch’s A22 Gallery. CSL will exhibit unseen work including, Piss Artist for D.H, an installation of champagne bottle caps originally made for Damien Hirst, representing the celebration of 300 occasions, like drinks with Francis Bacon and other notorious Colony Room characters.

Much-talked about British painter Chris Moon (“A new art superstar”, Harper’s Bazaar), whose successful debut solo exhibition took place in London in 2011, will unveil his Love Heart series, eight installations using nostalgic Love Heart confectionary at various stages of disintegration to tell the story of past relationships, from First Love, to One Night Stand and Fantasy Girl.
Collaborative works between UK and Chinese artists include Local Whispers, shown at the V&A (January 2011), but further developed in Beijing to become a reference for the current interpretive situation. This involves Sui Jianguo, Experimenter En Couleur, Yan Jun, Jun Yuan, Ruan Qianrui, Christian Krupa and Ding Xin. Sound installation Rabbit Sequence by Experimenter En Couleur and Ruan Qianrui, sees 20 people ranging from 3-80 years old, asked to talk about their fortune and presents them as traditional Chinese clay ornaments.

Full Rabbit completes a collaborative project exploring perceptions of fortune by artists in both the UK and China. The Beijing show was exhibited at Platform China Institute of Contemporary Arts under the title Half Rabbit in June 2011, halfway into the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. Some of the Chinese artists in the forthcoming London show have never exhibited work outside their country.

Full Rabbit artists are: Maria Castro, Experimenter En Couleur, Paul Davis, Leslie Deere, Felicity Ford, Gogo J, Sui Jianguo, Yan Jun, Christian Krupa, Catherine Shakespeare Lane, Alex McLean, Chris Moon, Tim Norris, Ruan Qianrui, EunJoo Shin, Seaming To, Neil Webb, Ron Wright, Ding Xin and Jun Yuan.

Curator Alexis Bamforth of Audio Architecture Arts comments, “The reaction to the Half Rabbit exhibition in Beijing in 2011 was extremely positive, even though many of the Chinese artists were nervous about their works being in such a public show. We look forward to unveiling the London group show. We’re particularly proud of the collaborative work produced by British and Chinese artists and the struggles we overcame to make it happen. Full Rabbit celebrates the concept of fortune and the cultural exchange of work between UK and Chinese artists, and we are extremely excited to showcase some of the most interesting emerging talent in China, on an international stage.”

The exhibition opens to the public 24thFebruary to 11th March 2012. Entrance is free.
