The Voice: week 3

Do you ever get the feeling that the world has cocked a formerly deaf ear in your direction? I’m starting to suspect that those savvy telly types at The Voice are listening to tutting head shakers like me and chucking in a few tweaks, albeit too late.
Week three has been something of a turning point.


Sure, we had the usual back story nonsense that destroys all the credibility of the show. We learned, for no reason whatsoever, that Cassius Henry’s kid brother had passed away and that Kate Read’s mother was an internally beautiful inspiration to her. We also saw that young Bill Downs was going to have to postpone his wedding day if he got through- something his fiancé seemed more than happy about, presumably hoping that he’s grow out of his addiction to leather wrist bands before the big day. Most annoying of all was the backstory they pre-climaxed the show with. Poor Tyler James, erstwhile BFF of the talented but troubled junkie Amy Winehouse, made it quite clear that this was for him now, for himself, for his confidence as a singer and songwriter in his own right. Of course we only heard this from Tyler because we couldn’t see his wind-tunnel features thanks to the barrage of Amy pics they decided to thrust at us. You could almost hear the producers screaming, “Look! Amy friggin’ Winehouse everyone!”
Tyler sang about as well as anyone nailed to a plank can be expected to and, once he’d finished waving his little arms about like a dreaming grasshopper, Billiam thanked him for hitting that last note in a falsetto voice because Tom had dropped the word ‘falsetto’ into an earlier comment and it has become the word of the day- it’s all very technical I’m sure.
We also had plenty of clumsy prodding from the voices in the heads of these judges- sorry, ‘coaches,’ like when Cassius, a former TOTP performer, was instantly asked by Bill.y.boy. “What’s been your big, music career… move… to date?” Funny he didn’t ask that of Hanna the cheerleader or Jay the pizza guy isn’t it?
This week, though, there was a lot more for me to enjoy. The coaches were on top form. Any one of them could easily replace the entire panel on BGT and it would constitute a personality upgrade. In the opening credits Tom said, “I wish I had eyes on the back of my head,” and I couldn’t help thinking, “one more nip and tuck session Boyo and you probably will!” Jessie was on fire and so was Will.E.Wonka. Even Danny made me laugh.
I should really temper all this adoration though by saying that being entertaining isn’t really enough for a show of this calibre.
What I’d also like is some insight into the experience and knowledge of these ‘international music gods’ beyond shouting ‘Pick Me!’ and throwing spit bombs across the classroom at the others. This week I thought the elder statesman of the panel gave the most useful critiques which surprised me because I thought he was only there for the sex and only even noticed there was someone singing when they got loud enough to be picked up by his ear trumpet. He told Leanne Mitchel she had a lot of ‘timber’ in her voice which I’m almost certain isn’t Welsh for ‘your singing gives me wood’. He also told Hanna she didn’t ‘over do it’ and advised Bill to work on going in and out of falsetto (take notes everyone). I know it’s not much but at least it’s singing-based commentary from someone who should know.
Elsewhere, Jessie Jay told poor Ruth that there are people who can sing and then there are those who, like her, can ‘SENG!’ Which I can only guess means ‘miss every SENGle note!’ Will.E.Warmer had to explainhis laughter as not being at ‘the girl’ but at ‘Jessie’s state right now’ and I, like him, have no idea what that means.
Other parts of this week’s show were, to be fair, exactly what it claims to be about.
Joelle Moses was outstanding. Alison Brown wasn’t picked in spite of being a MOBO award winner back in 98 and Cris Grixti was able to just come out and sing without his appearance clouding anyone’s judgment. He wasn’t picked but it wasn’t because of his height or his passing resemblance to John Belushi and that, surely, is the point of ‘The Voice’.
I do still, however, have my reservations about this format.
They have decided that each coach will pick ten people for their team and that they must do this at the time they hear them sing. I can see why they would want to do anything if it meant they were seen as different to other talent shows but it just seems to be making life difficult for no reason.
Judges are becoming increasingly hamstrung, forced to hold off picking someone today for fear they may have no room left tomorrow and, vice-versa, as the end of the auditions draws near they might be forced to recruit people much weaker then those let go in earlier rounds because they’re running out of time and need to get to ten.
Imagine a scenario where Danny has seven people and there are only a handful of singers left to see. He’d have to pick everyone- regardless of talent or…what? “Sorry Danny but you only picked eight so you’re not allowed to carry on.” I can’t see that happening.
Even now, in week three, we’re seeing singers being ignored because a coach already has enough like them in their team. The whole thing has become a game of tactics and gambles with Will.I.Ever now trying to force singers onto other teams and, in the case of Alison Brown, everyone saying they were all waiting for Jessie to pick her.
“You’re amazing but I can’t pick you” is no good to a singer who deserves to go through but can’t because the rules have been made up by people more concerned with doing things differently than staying true to the premise of the show. Additional jeopardy and decision-forcing rules work for a game show but that’s meant to be precisely what this isn’t.
The Voice is meant to be a quest for the best singers and, until you’ve heard everyone sing, how can you decide who they are?

 

Harvey Nichols A/W 2012

I have always though of Harvey Nichols (or Harvey Nics as us Londoners call it) as a young person’s Harrods. It has all of the luxury items, but is a bit more laid-back. I went to check out there Autumn/Winter collection and…wow.

 

My favourite clothes were by Jenny Packman (a Catherine Middleton favourite, and one that women who have more curves look just as amazing in. I find I would look too ‘booby’ in some of the things Middleton wears), Osman, Rag & Bone (divine), Erdem, Roksanda Llincic, McQueen, Preen and Mary Kantrantzou. A lot of amazing British designers are supported.

Lots of patterns and even some Lady Gaga type heels. All in all, a brilliant collection.

Cameron’s Fatal Blunder Over Web Monitoring

It has been a calamitous few weeks for the PM with his and his parties poll numbers falling through the floor. The only saving grace is that the other parties and their leaders are disliked just as much.

The debacle over jerry cans and the budget has been bad enough but it is the issue of civil liberties that has permanently damaged the PM.

One can only wonder as to why Tory strategists weren’t running around in panic when the crazy idea of ‘web and email monitoring was raised’. What where they thinking? How was the PM’s finger so off the political pulse? Cameron compounded the error by publicly coming out and defending the policy, a fatal misjudgement.

Has he been blind to Ron Paul movement in the US? Did he not see the response to SOPA? It was the NO2ID movement which did so much damage to the Labour party. And it was the brave actions of David Davis (who would  now be home secretary had he not sacrificed his career)  and the subsequent Conservative plan to abolish ID cards which brought so many over to the conservatives at the last election.

They should have learnt. YOU DO NOT PISS OFF THE INTERNET IF YOU WANT TO WIN ELECTIONS. No one understands this better than Obama and his strategists. This is why he ditched his support for SOPA. Already the government is facing a backlash from ‘Anonymous’ who have been launching attacks on the Home Office website, although it would be a mistake to think that theses extremists are the problem.

One can only conclude that Tory HQ thought this policy would further damage the Lib Dems. It has certainly achieved this. But this in itself doesn’t make a huge amount of sense as Cameron has tried so hard previously to placate his coalition partners.

But if they thought this was an issue which was only important to Lib Dems they have severely miscalculated. This is a policy which many conservatives feel is fundamentally un-conservative. A further unnecessary intrusion of the state in our lives. Cameron should know that these neo con policies have very little support on this side of the Atlantic.

As a result the Conservative party has only succeeded in splitting itself. Prominent members such as Mog, Raab, Davis and Goldsmith have come out in furious opposition.

Once again the Tories have been tarnished as the nasty party. The painstaking re branding has been ruined. This decision may well be the one which costs Cameron the next election.

 

The Hunger Games Review

Some have dismissed ‘The Hunger Games’ as another film for the teen masses. But this no ‘Twilight Saga’, nor is it a cheap copy of ‘Battle Royale’ as some have claimed. The film is fantastic and original. Its message is important. It is an absolute must watch for all (although I was a little surprised at the lowly 12A rating).

Set in the future, every year the Capitol randomly selects a boy and girl  from the surrounding twelve districts to fight to the death on live television in a tournament known as ‘The Hunger Games’. The games are a reminder of a rebellion the districts took part in against the Capitol 75 years earlier.

When I first read the summary I was worried the plot would be a little far fetched. I always want films to be believable. I shouldn’t have worried. The film takes itself seriously. At no point does it feel overly fantastical or unrealistic, in fact it does a very good job of feeling real. We should not forget that it is not so long ago in our history that these sorts of events existed, and people did fight each other to the death for others entertainment.

Unlike ‘Battle Royale’ there is a long build up to the actual tournament itself, and it is this which makes the film work so well.

The focus is on the horrific perversity of the whole event. Competitors are taken from the starving poverty of their districts to a world of opulence. As an extra dynamic to the contest the competitors are forced to try and gain sponsors in the lead up to the event by going on chat shows and doing well in test events. Sponsors help during the event will be vital if they want to have any chance of winning. The whole process is brilliantly sickening.

Unlike ‘Battle Royale’ most of the focus is on a single lead character ‘Katniss Everdeen’ who is played superbly by the brilliant Jennifer Lawrence. She is ably supported by a very strong cast.

All in all a superb film. Probably the film of the year and a must see. 9/10

 

Pixie Lott Helps Showcase Live Celebrate

Having enjoyed the presence and support of pop princess Pixie Lott at their fifth birthday celebrations in February, Showcase Live will once again open its doors, or rather those of Stamford Bridge’s ‘Under the Bridge’ Club, in Fulham, to an eclectic bunch of musical talents on 16th April 2012.

The live music event, which has been running for five successful years, since being founded in 2007 by Director George Eason, is set to be hosted by presenter and stand up comic Lee Collins. Lee is a regular on Lisa Snowdon and Dave Berry’s breakfast show on Capital FM as well as on the comedy scene.

Showcase Live is a great platform for new and unsigned artists and has been a starting point for many UK artists including Lawson, JLS and Jessie J. Showcase Live has seen support from many industry leaders and artists, including The Wanted, Fearne Cotton, JLS, Parade, Dionne Bromfield, Twenty Twenty and Westlife.

The next big event, on 16th April, will see London based Trio, Mitsotu perform a selection of their own material including “break your heart”.

Showcase Live favourite, Alex Buchanan, is back. Alex, originally from Manchester, has seen massive success when landing the role of the lead in the West End Musical, Thriller. He has successfully choreographed two music videos and has since been working on his debut album.

Daytona lights will also be performing at the event, offering us some enjoyable upbeat pop. Daytona Lights are a male five piece from London.

Domino Go, who are based in London are currently busy writing and recording their debut album with Atlantic Records will be sure to entertain the crowd with their breathtaking vocals on the night.

Artists that have featured in Showcase Live in the past have gone on to sign with Epic, Polydor, Global Talent, Columbia, Warner Music, Atlantic and many other record companies.

Why not make your home a Handmade Haven and help your local economy at the same time?

You don’t need me to tell you that we are smack bang in the middle of a really awful economic
slump, created dare I say, as a result of the ‘buy now, pay later’ culture we have come to know but
not necessarily love. Couple this with the ‘discard that and buy the next model’ attitude, it’s no
wonder we’re in the mess we are.

What happened to the time when we saw something that we really wanted or needed and then
knew that it would take us ‘X’ amount of weeks to save up for it? Then, wasn’t it a sweet moment
when we could go along and make our purchase? Furthermore didn’t we value such an item all the
more because we were only too aware of the effort in acquiring it?

There is nothing wrong in having to wait for something, surely we now realise that in most cases,
instant gratification is just that ‘instant’ and the pleasurable after effect is very short-lived.
I would like to suggest that by altering our attitude to the way we purchase and what we purchase,
we will not only help our economy but we will actually be providing ourselves with a more
meaningful, sustainable and happier existence.

I speak specifically about handmade products and services.

Today the media is full to bursting, of programmes and articles dedicated to the tangible
achievements of the past, where experts extol the virtues of craftsmen and craftsmanship. They talk
about the detail, the design, the skill, the workmanship and the fact that many of these items are
still in working use, literally hundreds of years later.

It may be surprising to learn that there is still, to this day a thriving handmaking and craft industry in Britain today worth an estimated, £3bn per annum to the UK economy* and if common sense has
any part in our future then this figure will rise exponentially.

In buying handmade products and services we are not only making a considered purchase, we are
making a connection with another human being, who has taken it upon themselves to learn a
particular skill, coupled with their life experiences, to produce the most beautiful, useful and
desirable things, that will not only make a statement and command attention in our home, but
which will also become treasured possessions and heirlooms of the future, that have meaning far
beyond their aesthetic or functional value. Our homes will truly become ours when we fill them with
individually crafted interiors that reflect who we are as people rather than the generic profile of
some large chain store. While we will be secure in the knowledge that we are not only spending our
ever more hard-earned cash really well but that we will be genuinely contributing to our local
economy by supporting our local craftsmen and women. (Source: how to buy XRP debit card)

And while we not only have the economy but the environment to consider, we will be much closer
to having a positive effect in this direction as well, if we purchase products and services that have
been created with an almost instinctive awareness of sustainability because handcrafted items are
more often than not produced from renewable or recycled resources.

So my message would be ‘buy once but buy well’ and keep your local craftsmen and women going.
Don’t think for a minute that I am talking about turning your house into a living museum, as an
homage to purely traditional/heritage crafts; There is some really cutting edge, contemporary stuff
out there, it just happens to have been beautifully crafted by hand and will almost certainly outlast
it’s machine-stamped counterpart by years if not generations. If that’s not value for money I don’t
know what is!

Huge Protests Inspired by Suicide of Greek Pensioner – How Much More Can Greece Take?

A 77 year old Greek pensioner took his own life outside the Greek parliament building on Wednesday morning. Retired pharmacist Dimitris Christoulas shot himself in the head with a handgun. In a suicide note, Christoulas linked his tragic act to the country’s economic crisis. In the note found by his daughter he wrote, ‘I have no other way to react apart from finding a dignified end before I start sifting through garbage for food,’

The act immediately sparked widespread sympathy and anger. An impromptu anti-austerity rally was launched on the same day and there were clashes with police. Police clashed with around a thousand protesters for a second day on Thursday. Some were blaming politicians and EU leaders for the death. The protestors chanted, ‘Killlers!, Killers!’.

Christoulas is thought to have attended anti-cut protests the previous year and has been described as politically active. Sympathisers called his actions, ‘A clear political act … he was giving his life to change the situation’.

Suicides in Greece have doubled since 2009 having previously been the lowest in Europe. Greece is struggling to cope with the heavy austerity measures which have been forced upon in by the bigger European economies in exchange for bailout funds.

Already the recent bailout is looking like a distant memory. As I mentioned in an earlier article  it was extremely disappointing that EU leaders did not attempt to solve the problem once and for all. Already we are getting suggestions that a third bailout will needed. The Greek growth predictions are extremely optimistic given the levels of austerity it will need to bear. Yields on the new Greek PSI bonds (the bonds investors were forced to swap their existing holdings for) have soared to over 21% in the last couple of days.

As the actions of Christoulas show, the EU leaders and economists, have underestimated the Greek people. There is only so much the Greek people will take. The real crunch point is likely to come in June when cuts worth about 7% of GDP are expected to be announced. How much more will the Greek people take?

My guess is that we are close to the breaking point. Christoulas’s tragic act may be the symbolic trigger which sets everything off. One of the major issues Greece faces (which people often forget) is that Greek banks, pension funds and other Greeks hold most of the Greek government debt. This is why some in Greece are so reluctant to leave the Euro. Nevertheless something will have to give.

 

 

I Make, Therefore I Am by Gillian Montegrande

There are many things we can say about the failings and ills of our society, but the most worrying are
the apathy and abstinence from positive and proactive input from certain sectors. Many have
become spectators of life rather than participants; television for example, in the form of reality
shows creates confusion between fame and achievement and because of its accessible nature and
selective (edited) exposure of facts, gives the false impression that such things are easily gained
without the investment of learning, effort or struggle. As a result viewers, particularly but not
exclusively the young, find themselves disconnected and struggling to find a purpose in a world that
does not match their expectations.

What to do?

While there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution there are, in my opinion, things that can be done to
provide these people once more with a sense of doing, being and purpose; to feel that their
existence is justified just.

What better way to show evidence of our existence and identity (apart from creating children), than
to leave behind a tangible object created by hand?

achievements of the past, such as the Antiques Road Show, Victorian/Edwardian Farm and most
recently, Handmade in Britain (to name but a few), where experts extol the virtues of craftsmen and
craftsmanship. They talk about the detail, the design, the skill, the workmanship and the fact that
many of these items are still in working use, literally hundreds of years later.

These antique objects and artefacts were as a result of ‘skilled manual labour’ the bi product of
which was being usefully occupied. There was a time when the term ‘manual labour’ meant and
(maybe in some eyes) still does mean today, demeaning, soulless work. However, we have forgotten
(or choose to ignore) that manual labour, although sometimes hard, was also associated with an
honest day’s work and more often than not there was something tangible to show for the efforts
expended at the end of the day. In that time, it is possible, even likely, that when such a person put
their head on the pillow at night, tired and aching, they did not realise the significance and
importance of their exertions and maybe would not have been aware that they were satisfying an
innate need to be manually as well as mentally occupied.

Today, not only is very little built to last but also few people expect things to last, in their constant search for ‘the next thing’, this ‘have it all and having it now’ approach has been of no help and indeed has caused the financial mess the planet now finds itself in.

Nevertheless, there are some who are fully aware of the significance of such noble exertions, which I
repeat; we celebrate on a regular basis. Manual occupation is still one of the best ways to satisfy this primeval need and that there is nothing wrong in going to bed tired and aching, knowing that the
day has been used to its full with something to show at the end of it. Some have become obsessed
with jumping the gun, to get to the destination without going on the journey, let alone enjoying it!
The concept of physical struggle is now perceived as bad, to the extent that we are desperately
trying to eliminate it (in the western world at least), to our cost. The advancement of human
knowledge and discovery has done much to improve the plight of humanity but it has also done
much to take away the privilege of physical occupation and endeavour. Many children, from
underprivileged and privileged backgrounds alike, with their parents’ blessing are very ready, to
replace hands-on experiences, with virtual ones; the gaming industry was worth $105 billion in
August 2010.

But physical exertion, endeavour, struggle even, is still to this day, necessary in every human life.
When that is not present, an emotional as well as physical vacuum is created, which as we all know,
must be filled. Are our lives any “easier” today? I doubt it. We’ve simply replaced physical struggle
with mental anxiety.

Art, Craft and Manual Production satisfy that need on every level.

When making, a process is gone-through, which uses pretty much all of our faculties:
Desire and/or need; concept; design; sourcing of materials; establishing the strengths and
weaknesses of both material and maker and then through trial, error and ingenuity working with or
around those attributes and limitations, to finally be confronted with something that is real, knowing
that so much of oneself has gone into the very fibre of the work.

But there are obstacles in the form of modern-day fears and insecurities that currently pervade
every aspect of modern life which is so readily passed on to our children. They are no longer allowed
or encouraged to go out, to discover the world around them, in order that they might take risks, to
discover how things work, how they themselves work and how the two work together. They no
longer have the opportunity or are encouraged (as previous generations were) to find discarded raw
materials such as pieces of wood or old bicycle parts, to transform into go-carts or wooden boats,
that really do work. Making is as much a way of discovering how they work as how the world around
them works. We need to restore this human right to them and making – structured or otherwise, can
do that.

Using our hands to create things of beauty, use or both; using the raw materials we find around us,
where a battle of wills ensues between maker and material, grappling and tussling with that
material, until a truce – a compromise and understanding is achieved and something beautiful
emerges. It is this struggle that helps define us as human beings and we need this affirmation, pretty
much on a daily basis, to keep us sane and healthy.

If we know this then why can making not become once more an integral part of our society and the
way we (parents and teachers) teach our children? What happened to Woodwork, Metalwork,
Needlework, Home Economics in the classroom? The old adage, “The only way to learn how to do
something is to do it” has never been more true. It is in the classroom and at home where we need
to start again, showing little children that those appendages called hands have a direct link to the
wellbeing of their mind and psyche as well as their sense of place and belonging. Today, a three year
old child has far more idea of what to do with a computer game controller than he does with
Plasticine, Playdoh, Lego or Crayons. I fear that the prophetic vision depicted in the (ironically)
computer-generated animation Wall-E, is much closer than we think!

If such a vision is to be believed, then we may be further down that path than is comfortable to
admit. I would argue that the recent inner city riots have been carried out by people who have come
to believe that there is no point in having a go at anything because it “won’t work” or at least they
have not been shown that it could. Some of us know it can work and that trying is part of the fun,
adventure and fulfilment. These unfortunate people are afraid to take the risk of discovering how to
do something that may or may not have a positive outcome, but from which they can learn and
improve. Instead they do something, which achieves instant gratification with the least effort and
ironically they feel more secure in doing because they are sure of the outcome. You throw a brick
through a window; you know what’s going to happen! But that is all that is ever going to happen- no
wonder frustration and violence are never far away. With making, there is always new territory to be
discovered, in the skill and in oneself.

If we could only pass on to others that sense of achievement and what it feels like to stare upon the
tangible and positive result of one’s own useful endeavours, then it will go at least some way to
improving the lot of individuals who currently have no hope.
