Switching genre, from children’s author to thriller writer by acclaimed author KM Kelly

Ten years ago I wrote the words ‘The End’ on my children’s novel, sent it off to my then agent and waited with excitement as she started submitting it to publishers. At the time I thought that this was the beginning of my journey as a children’s author. But it wasn’t to be. Instead, ten years on and my first adult thriller is about to be published.

The publishing industry, and children’s publishing in particular, is very much at the mercy of fashions and trends. I was fortunate that Red Rock, a science fiction thriller set in a world beset by climate change, caught the tail end of the popular wave of dystopian fiction. But that trend was coming to an end. Suddenly dystopias were out of favour. My publisher declined my second book. My agent let me go shortly after.

So there I was. Back where I started.

At first I was sad. I felt I had failed. But then I realised that I was free. I could now write whatever I wanted. I could write the story that I wanted to read. What at first seemed like a bad thing was in fact liberating.

I have always enjoyed thrillers. It’s probably my favourite genre, although I still love a decent bit of science fiction. As a result, it seemed natural that I would try my hand at writing in this genre. And it was such fun to do. My first effort was a mix of science fiction and thriller which I absolutely loved writing. I sent it out to agents and publishers and received a lot of positive replies. But they all said the same thing. It didn’t fit squarely into either genre. It was too speculative for a thriller but not enough Science Fiction for SF.

Once again I was at the mercy of market forces. Several publishers told me that if I wrote a straight thriller they would be interested in hearing from me again.

And I thought – why not. I sat down and wrote a new novel, another thriller, and this time I toned down the speculative aspects (although it’s still there, in the background if you look hard enough). I drew on my love of espionage and conspiracy theories and the result was The Sleepers. Since Bloodhound Books had responded positively to my earlier novel I decided to skip trying to find an agent and put them top of my list.

Needless to say they offered me a contract and The Sleepers will be out on April 26th 2022.

Thrillers are such fun to write, as well as being hugely popular at the moment. So for now I’ve found my niche. I’m halfway through penning another thriller.

I guess in a way I’ve let my writing be directed by the market, and I think all writers face this choice at some point. Do you write solely for yourself, in which case you can do whatever you like, or do you want a publishing deal. For me it is the latter.

It’s not uncommon for authors to switch genre. Many authors write in more than one, often using a pen name to do so. Writing under a pen name can be a good way of separating your writing identities. So I decided to change my name, ever so slightly and reinvent myself as KM Kelly, thriller writer.

I look forward to sharing The Sleepers with the world, and hopefully many more books to follow.

How about an acclaimed Karrie Barron personalised wedding card – a miniature world, one to keep until the Ruby wedding anniversary

I daresay some of you already know I am a devotee of karriebarron.com  which was founded in 1994. One of my Milly Adams books had just come out, and there we were, a group of us having a celebratory lunch at The Wellington on the Strand, and one of my Frost team handed me a gift.

It was a Karrie Barron  personalised card. It has moved with me, under its dome, and once it is in place, all is well with the world.

So with spring upon us and drifting towards early summer it is the time for a wedding or two. So how about a Karrie Barron wedding card, which is really a memento, one to keep, as a gift for the bride and groom.

But how did this wonderfully artistic and innovative  family concern begin?

Tilly tells us that her mother,  Karrie’s, concept was to make 3-Dimensional cards depicting miniature worlds. She began designing and making from a back bedroom in their  family home in Fulham,  and would sell them through her Apple Market stall (Covent Garden) once a week. Of course, as it was a family concern, Tilly helped Karri and over the years  she devoloped, not only the skill and imagination, but the patience to take the business forward when Karrie retired. Patience, indeed yes,  Frost can imagine the need  as these little worlds are tiny, fiddly, personalised and just quite perfect.

If you add to the mix the internet, along with the stall at Covent Garden  and also tra – la, a shop and studio in lovely Glastonbury, Somerset,  which is where  Karrie Barron Cards now has its operating base,  the cards are  thankfully easy to obtain.

Somehow, when a ‘little world’ is received, there is no semblance of the usual mass production one has come to expect. Cards can be personalised, and because they are made by hand, each is just a little different, (no two the same)  and the care or the artist shines from them. As I said, the first thing I did was to buy a dome, because mine is a work of art.

Just think, one day the bridal pair will be celebrating their Ruby Wedding. So how about a Karrie Barron card for just this occasion.

All cards are made to order, so best to allow at least 2 weeks from when the order is placed until dispath. I use them often, for that special occasion. It is always well received. Just go to the Karrie Barron website for their full range, and there are gifts too. Lucky Glastonbury to have the shop and studio on the doorstep!

Nuby, a leading baby brand in the UK, has created a list of the best sleepy songs for your little ones

As a Mum and Grandma I know that we all want the best for our babies. From sunrise to sunset, parents across the nation go above and beyond to put a smile on their children faces. Despite this, if your child has slept poorly, so have you, and the day can become longer and increasingly difficult.

In this situation, you can try establishing a night-time routine. This includes bathing your baby, changing them into cosy pyjamas, and playing them a lullaby. In days gone by, mum might have sung. Trust me, my children would not have benefitted from my voice having a go. But a good lullaby may, indeed,  encourage your baby to sleep through the night. And doesn’t a soundless sleep sound priceless right now?

To help your baby through the night, Nuby, a leading baby brand in the UK, has created a list of the best sleepy songs. This is based on how many times these songs appear on Spotify baby sleep-related playlists – a sure-fire sign that they’re successful in getting your little one some shut-eye. Then you can start your night-time routine with confidence, one lullaby at a time.

10. Puff the Magic Dragon (Laura Hanson)

‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ transports us to another time. You might recognise this song from the animated Puff the Magic Dragon (1978), and Laura Hanson’s cover is just as charming. We can see why her dream-like piano lulls little ones to sleep.

9. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Charlie Francis)

‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ is a classic lullaby. Charlie Francis’ interpretation of this song is peaceful enough to make any child (or adult) relaxed. The tinkling piano and slow, melodic rhythm is perfectly soothing and is an updated version of the song that probably eased many of us to sleep as babies!

8. Itsy Bitsy Spider (Mingmei Hsueh)

‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ is another song straight from the history books. Mingmei Hsueh, a talented pianist and musician, has gifted parents with this calming, wordless lullaby. Try not to sing the lyrics alongside this instrumental – if you can.

7. Hush Little Baby (Beth McLaughlin)

‘Hush Little Baby’ by Beth McLaughlin sounds just like the original. Similar to the previous songs, this doesn’t include any lyrics. The soothing tune is perfect for bedtime.

6. A Whole New World (Purple Tulips)

It doesn’t matter what time it is, ‘A Whole New World’ by Purple Tulips is enough to make any baby sleepy. Even though we know this song from Aladdin (1992), this is another reimagined classic that we could easily drift asleep to – the piano rendition is so graceful.

5. Can You Feel The Love Tonight? (Rita May)

Rita May’s ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight?’ will definitely you think of the comfort of your own bed – but also The Lion King (1994) and Elton John’s smooth voice. Who’d have thought that so many of our favourite Disney classics could be translated into gentle instrumental lullabies?

4. Colors of the Wind (Rita May)

A talented pianist, Rita May deserves to be on our list twice. ‘Colors of the Wind’ reimagines the beauty of the familiar song found in Disney’s Pocahontas (1995).

3. Clean White Noise (White Noise Baby Sleep)

White noise can be extremely beneficial for your little one. It comes in many forms, including static frequencies. This is also a continuous song, so you can put this on repeat without any breaks interrupting your baby’s sleep.

2. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (Adelmar Borrego)

Similar to Francis’ cover, this song is ideal if you’re looking for calming piano music. Considering this is the second time a reimagining of the original has appeared on our list, we think this lullaby will make any baby sleepy!

1. Brahms’ Lullaby (Beth McLaughlin)

Finally, ‘Brahms’ Lullaby’ by Beth McLaughlin is, it appears, the best sleep-inducing song for your little one. This song features the most in Spotify playlists for baby sleep songs. So if you’re in need of a good night’s sleep, this one is for your baby to drift off to.

There you have it – the best songs for babies to fall asleep to. Mums and dads alike can use this as a guide to make a night-time playlist for their little ones. Get your nightlight, speaker, and sleeping bag for your newborn ready. Each child is unique, however, so you might find they respond better to piano music than white noise, or vice versa. Which song will you play first?

Lizi’s Low Sugar Maple & Pecan Granola – No Guilt Today – by Award Winning Author Dr Kathleen Thompson [LS Maple & Pe

Processed and refined sugars are one of the worst curses of modern day cuisine. They’re sneaked into so many manufactured food products – even savoury ones – and they cause obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, dementia and stroke. Sorry to be so blunt but, despite a choice of foods of which our parents and grandparents could only have dreamed, our modern diet frankly leaves much to be desired. Our taste buds have been trained by the food industry to crave high sugars in excessive quantities, and we don’t eat nearly enough wholesome grains and good fats.

OK rant over, because thank goodness for companies like Lizi’s who help reinstate the wonderful healthy and delicious diet which nature intended.

Lizi’s is the brainchild of Mick and Lizi. They’re a married pair of science enthusiasts, organic farmers and country bed-and-breakfast owners, so perfectly qualified to create high quality, tasty and satisfying cereals.

The key feature of all Lizi’s cereals is their low Glycaemic Load (GL). I’ve explained Glycaemic Load before – basically low GL foods release sugar slowly into our blood stream, unlike processed and refined sugars, which is so much better for our long-term health and happiness.

Lizi’s produce an incredible range of granolas and mueslis, always from natural ingredients – mainly oats, nuts and seeds, but with numerous natural flavour combinations suitable for all ages, diets and lifestyles. Their current range includes High Protein, Digestive Health and Low Sugar options.

I particularly love Lizi’s Low Sugar Maple & Pecan Granola. Normally I steer well clear of granola, which tends to be oozing with sugar, but not Lizi’s. It’s a mixture of wholegrain oat flakes, pecan nuts, almond pieces, walnut pieces, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, coconut, chicory fibre, and just a little maple syrup. You can probably tell from the ingredients that this tastes as delicious as a naughty indulgence, and yet absolutely no guilt needed – because it’s actually doing your body good – providing important slow-release energy and healthy oils. It will also leave you feeling nourished and satiated – so you won’t be tempted by those naughty fattening snacks mid-morning.

So give your body a treat and take a look at the full range on Lizis website. Your body will thank you.

Margaret decided on some exercise. Hard facts were faced…

Margaret thought she’d go into town to the studio, where her friend was holding a Strolling half hour.
‘And what is a Strolling half hour?’ wondered Margaret. Margaret decided that the definition of To Stroll was to walk in a leisurely way. This seemed rather lovely. ‘Me, me’ she said.
Margaret arrived, hot and a tad sweaty, if we can be rude for a moment, as she had hurried one and a half miles, plod plod, not stroll stroll, to the Studio. Margaret’s friend Lyn was there too. ‘Oh Goody,’ thought Margaret, ‘We can go on the back row together.’
Margaret then noticed the ballet mirrors, a whole wall of them. She looked, she saw, she thought: ‘Who is that woman in clothes like mine with the big, no – enormous bum?’
My friends, Margaret was the proud owner of that bum, she  realised. Her day was ruined. Really really it was. All those biscuits eaten before they reached a plate had no calories, she was sure that was correct.  Margaret is wrong. Very very wrong.
So, the half hour began.  Strolling is not to walk in a leisurely way. Strolling is to do line dancing at what seems great speed. The legs go up, legs are pointed, heels tapped, legs slide gsideways, step step,  along the floor. Lots and lots of times all a bit different, but yes,  Margaret swears it is line dancing but perhaps a teeny weeny bit slower. Puff Pant as Teacher strolled us through it, and again.
Then on came the music.  Margaret repeated to herself and anyone who would listen:  Strolling is not only not slow, there is no back row, because everyone keeps turning and turninguntil  the figures in the mirror were a blur, and the music raced, and Margaret quite lost her mind, her memory, and finally all control of her feet.
The key, Margaret realised, is to have the weight on the right foot. Margaret did not often have her weight on her correct foot. Margaret’s feet and legs got muddled. Margaret decided she would stay in the corner, and do her own thing, in time with the music.   At the end, Margaret tottered home, having had fun, oh yes she did, really she did. She will be better next week, really she will.
She reached home. She put cushions on the seat in the garden. She made two coffees. She took hers, and eventually Dick joined her, in the sun, by the Monkey Puzzle Tree, while Margaret explained about Strolling, but she didn’t mention the mirror. Certainly not. That is best kept between Margaret and her friends.
Margaret Graham writes novels  under her own name, and as Milly Adams and Annie Clarke. Margaret maintains this is the reason she frequently seems confused. It has nothing to do with her age.
