Anna Friel and Rhys Ifans own homes beside each other in Spain.
The couple have known each other for years but only started dating
last year after the ‘Pushing Daisies’ actress split from her partner
of 10 years David Thewlis – who is the father of her six-year-old
daughter Gracie – and Anna loves spending time with her new love out
of the spotlight.
She said: “We both have houses in the same part of Spain. We have done
for years – I put every penny from ‘Pushing Daisies’ into renovating a
300-year-old house out there – but we didn’t really know each other
then. But really, I think I’m giving too much detail.
“He won’t talk about [the relationship] at all. Because if you don’t
keep something private for you, your life ‘s a reality programme. We
go to a little pub or camping to Wales. I won’t put myself in that
position because I want to keep my private life private.”
Anna is smitten with Rhys and revealed she also admires his career choices.
She said: “I’ve heard he’s incredible on stage, he makes such
brilliant choices and I’m like ‘What the hell is he going to do next?’

The 24-year-old lead singer in the band – which is also made up of Joshua Hayward (guitar) Tom Cowan (synthesizer and bass) Rhys Webb (bass and organs) and Joseph Spurgeon (drums)  – prefers people to “make their own insights” into his words.

He said: “I know everyone succumbs to the odd cliche and everyone writes a rotten lyric, but I never like them to seem too planned out or pretentious. I like it when people make their own insights.”

Rhys revealed the group – who have previously released albums ‘Strange House’ and ‘Primary Colours’ – wanted to experiment on their latest record ‘Skying’ and touch on their combined interest of a “warped sense of reality”.

He said: “I think you can really paint a picture with music. The early stuff was quite straightforward and monochrome. I think we did want to go technicolour and psychedelic and explore what we could do with what we had to do it with.

“We’re all interested in that feeling of a warped sense of reality, elevation in music and the way music can affect the listener and how you feel when you hear it. It’s a really powerful thing. The idea of elevation and euphoria is something that we like.”

The 30-year-old singer was just 16 when she was given her first contract and admits people often forgot about her young age and she struggled at times to know where to turn.

She said: “I started in this business so young – I was just a girl. To keep your head together. I felt directionless, like a chicken with its head cut off.

“You feel like everyone wants a piece of you, everything is available to you, and it doesn’t matter that you’re only 16.”

The ‘Empire State of Mind’ hitmaker also admits she couldn’t understand why some reviews of her last album ‘The Element of Freedom’ criticised her lack of “passion”, insisting she is always “truly primal” in her work.

She added: “That’s just a reviewer’s opinion. I find myself to be truly primal and passionate. Everything I do comes from a primal place.”
