Hatcham Social, Cargo, London | Music Review

As Hatcham Social bound onto the stage at Fierce Panda’s 18 birthday party, on the same night that Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League Semi Final, it’s clear to see that this is a band that ain’t shy! London had come out in force and the busy venue sprung to life as the band came to the stage.

The band played a set mostly from their new album, About Girls, which was rather fitting, as well as this being the great Fierce Panda’s 18th birthday it was also the album launch party. A great set, a great show, a great band. If you want an idea as to what the band are like live; imagine if the four protagonists from Trainspotting formed a band. Singer Toby Kidd crossing the stage and sneering at the audience like Begbie, Riley Difford plucking his bass with the gormless look of Spud, floppy-fringed David Claxton playing guitar in the way you felt about Tommy; nice but stupid.  It’s drummer Finnigan Kidd who you feel sorry for.

These boys make nice music but look like the sort of chaps you’d de-friend on Facebook. Apart from Finnigan. He seems nice – like Renton. Nice boys don’t play nice music, though. The devil has all the best tunes, innit.
