Do Medicines Cost Too Much? By Dr Kathleen Thompson

The UK Cancer Drug Fund, which funds non-NHS cancer treatments, has removed twenty-five drugs off its list recently, to combat a £100 million (and rising) overspend. This highlights a recurring dilemma of modern healthcare.

Medical science is advancing with cosmic speed. Patients with desperate diseases have new hope. Genetic advances allow personalised medicine for enhanced individual benefit.

However, drug costs are becoming frighteningly high, and, as people live longer, health budgets rise further. To be cynical, it was cheaper when people simply didn’t survive.

In response, many governments have attempted to force medicine prices down. Politically a quick win. But what are the consequences?

Let’s examine the drug development process.

picture2drugarticle180915

First a drug target is chosen – often a protein molecule (receptor) on the surface of some of our cells.

Thousands of chemicals are then screened. If they bind to this receptor, they could influence how that cell works, and hence affect disease activity.

Chemicals which do bind are further narrowed down to those with additional potential drug properties—those likely to be well-absorbed, lack toxicity, and remain in the body long enough to work.

A lead candidate is chosen, and then modified further, optimising its chances of success.

Next, as required by government regulations, it is tested in animals and in the test-tube, for potential safety, effectiveness, and suitable dose.

Finally, clinical trials can begin. Often in healthy volunteers first, then small numbers of patients and finally in many patients. Thousands of people are usually tested before a drug can be marketed, and the size and duration of clinical trials has increased, as regulatory requirements have increased1.

Consequently, the typical cost of a new drug development is US$350 million according to a recent study by Forbes2.

But it’s worse than that—the development path is littered with booby-traps and precipices. Fledgling drugs frequently fail, and the Tufts Centre study found that, even those medicines which make it as far as clinical trials, have only  approximately a 12% chance of eventually reaching the market3.

Thus, including the costs of failed developments, the actual cost for each successful drug is nearer US$2.6 billion3, and for many smaller companies, if the roulette wheel isn’t kind, the cost is failure and liquidation.

Pharmaceutical companies are not angels, nor are they demons. To survive, they must make enough profit from their marketed drugs to fund their development pipeline, in addition to returning some profit to shareholders. Long drug-development times, mean they may only have a few years of patent-protection left to achieve this. If governments force prices down, companies sometimes react by reducing development risk – choosing drugs more likely to succeed in preference to innovative but riskier developments for difficult diseases.

A typical drug development takes around ten years – so we won’t see this effect immediately, and when we do, it will be too late – it could take another ten years to correct.

So there’s the problem – health bills cannot continue rising exponentially, but forcing drug prices down has serious consequences too. What to do?

SmartSun Wristband Review | Parenting

sunprotectionforkidsWe reviewed the SmartSun Wristband. An ingenious way of keeping safe in the sun for children and adults. They are very easy to use and they work well. The bands are single use and come in a pack of 5. These bands can be used by all ages to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Especially useful given the rising skin cancer figures.

Fresh air and warm weather are healthy for children and, and small doses of Vitamin D from the sun’s rays are good for baby’s skin. Children have delicate and sensitive skin however, so it is important to make sure their SPF is topped up at all times when outside in the sun.

It is easy to forget about reapplying sun cream when you are out having fun, but the SmartSun wristband provides an easy to read indicator of how much UV radiation they have been exposed too. It works by measuring the amount of UV radiation, and lets you know when to reapply sun cream and when they have had too much sun.

With two colour changes – one to tell you when your children’s sun cream needs reapplying, and one to tell you when to avoid the sun, you can enjoy the time spent outside by using the Smartsun wristband to accurately time the next sun cream application. The band is discreet and comfortable to wear for either adults or children and can be used in and out of both pool and sea water.

Organic September – Rainbow Salad & Fries

You all know by now I love to get creative in the kitchen. And as part of organic September I was invited to create a few recipes using a range of organic produce. So I decided to base my first recipe around a savoury dish and get really stuck in with a good healthy recipe.

So after a little bit of googling I couldn’t find a dish that would do the range justice. Back to the drawing board. With many people being gluten or wheat intolerant these dishes should make a lot of you very happy indeed. Most chips and some salads have a vast amount of hidden nasties in them. The coatings on fries and even some salads will have wheat in the sauces. So with this in mind I decided to rustle up some sweet potato fries with a nifty crisp, crunchy and delicious coating and a bright rainbow salad.

Nu Skin Galvanic Spa Review

I have used the Nu Skin Galvanic Spa for the last 4 weeks and it has really changed my skin for the better. At the cost of 2 professional salon visits it’s well worth the hype. I now can see amazing results in the comfort of my own bathroom. It’s lifted my jaw line. My cheeks, around my mouth and eyes have really been smoothed out. Also my pores actually look like I have spent a fortune on weekly treatments. The fine lines are around my eyes have all but vanished. it looks like I have expensive spa visits. It’s a little like ironing out the skin. The more you use this device the better the results. What’s great about this is that I found it actually works much like a professional Galvanic machine. These work by sending a current through the skin and enable products to be penetrated deeper into the underlying cells. And also to cleanse the skin to allow the new podcast to be introduced. It will create a slight metallic taste, this is completely normal and professional services do just the same.

Nu Skin Galvanic Spa Review
I use the Nu Skin Galvanic Spa (incredible little gadget) around 3 times a week for 5 minutes a time for each gel stage that comes with the kit. I just pop it into my regular nighttime routine and I’m sorted.

Nu Skin Galvanic Spa Routine

  1. I take off my makeup with an oil based lotion. This will get rid of stubborn eye makeup and daily build up of London life.
  2. I then cleanse with my skin with Caudilie facial foam. I will do a full review of this very soon!
  3. I then chop off the end of the pre gel treatment and apply 1/2 of the tube all over my face.
  4. Then I damp my hand under the tap and place my fingers on the metal pad at the back.
  5. Turn on the machine to No1 and start to gently use upward motions, a bit like a facial massage. You will hear the machine beep and this tells you its working.
  6. I do this for about 2 1/2 minutes then move onto the other side. This stage is the deep cleansing stage where its having a souphficaton effect. This means its turning the grease and grime into a soap like substance that can be washed off.
  7. Then it time for the treatment mode No2. Cut open the treatment tube and add 1/2 to the entire face and just repeat the movements from before.
  8. If I am doing my weekly mask I would apply this now for about 10- 20 mins while relaxing in the bath.
  9. I then lightly remove any excess and apply a pea sized amount of Nu Skin night cream.
  10. I always follow this with my Hydropeptide eye cream! Check out my article here on some other incredible products.

Nu Skin Galvanic Spa Review

When I used the Nu Skin Galvanic Spa for the first time I decided to do just one side of my face! It’s truly amazing and I suggest if you purchase this bathroom anti ageing buddy that you do the same!! I get told all the time that I have amazing skin and regularly get asked for ID! I think this really has helped loads over the last few weeks as my skin hasn’t looked this great in months.

Once the skin has gone too far with the ageing process we can only maintain what we have. Their is no miracle cure and its all down to upkeep. You need to know that the effectiveness of expensive salon facial electrical treatments are not miracle workers but they will assist to help keep the skin in good condition. But also you need to have regular treatments going forward or the effects will be lost and your money just wasted. I have had this little device for over 6 months and annoyed I didn’t start using it sooner. I am now converted and happy to have this little baby sitting on its stand taking pride and place on my vanity unit!

Macadamia Professional Launch

I attended the launch of a very exciting hair range recently. Macadamia are known for their hair oils and now they have created a fantastic new collection of professional products for salons and home use. I was mesmerised at the performance of the entire range.

They are for sale on their website so don’t worry if your salon isn’t stocking just yet, and if you are a salon wanting these just hit THIS LINK and you can introduce the entire range for your customers to go crazy over. It won’t be long before this range pops up in salon near you as this range is quite frankly superb. I have had a drastic cut recently and these are helping restore my hairs lustre, bounce and body. One of the main reasons I cut it off was it had become dry from using hotel shampoos and conditioners while traveling recently. Most inferoiur products contain Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES for short) and these strip the hair of vital goodness and essential oils. It’s not widely know that this nasty chemical can cause eye or skin irritations. The worst thing about SLES is that its used in experiments done on animals and humans. So if your Vegan you need to check those bottles guys. SLES can also cause irritation after extended exposure with some people. I can see you all dashing off to check bathroom cabinets very soon. You will be amazed at how many of your favourite products contain this substance.

So knowing all of this you would think that I would be more aware of hair heath…NO! I threw caution to the wind and also had a little fling with mega blonde hair. The combination left my once beautiful mane a tad dry and frizzy. Then macadamia pro came into my life! It’s a game changer that’s for sure! Along with being kind to your hair  and free from SLES the new Macadamia range is cruelty and gluten free. Yes you read that right, it doesn’t contain any wheat based or gluten products. With allergies being on the increase its so important to remember that your skin absorbs countless substances throughout the day. The skin is the largest organ we have so it makes sense to protect ourselves from over exposure to unnecessary products. I’m a coeliac suffer and this was music to my ears. Who would have thought a brand could be so forward thinking! Myself and my new cropped hair are extremely happy to say the least.

Take yourself over to their website here to see the entire range! I will be doing individual reviews on all their products over the next few weeks. Make sure you pop back and check them out.

So with that I will cut this short!!! And say bye until next time!

Come and say hi over at twitter too! @Sarahbacchus or check out my blog SLBstyle.com for more fashion, food and fun.

Sun Protection – Should We or Shouldn’t We? By Dr Patricia Thompson

Each summer, work-weary, sun-starved Brits look forward to baking under a hot foreign sun, wearing nothing but a piece of lycra or two, and a thin layer of suncream.

But what are the facts about sunburn and sunscreens?

Sunburn has two components: The initial ‘burn’ is unpleasant enough, but the long term damage is more serious, including skin cancer and (quelle horreur) wrinkles and saggy skin.

Sunburn is caused by UVB ultraviolet light-waves. They also release free-radicles, which damage skin-cell DNA, and hence can cause skin cancer. On the plus side, they trigger late tanning.

UVA waves penetrate deeper. They tan (nice), but age the skin (bad), and also contribute to skin cancer (very bad).

A sun-tan is our skin’s natural sunscreen, but doesn’t prevent damage from prolonged sunbathing, hence the need for commercial sunscreens. These either form a barrier to, or absorb UV.

But which to choose?
Check the ‘Sun Protection Factor’ (SPF). SPF 15 delays burning by 15-fold (eg from 20 minutes to 5 hours) and filters 93% of UVB. SPF 30 delays burning  by 30-fold and filters 97% of UVB.

UVA protection uses a star system (1 to 5). This indicates protection relative to UVB, so 5 stars for SPF 15 is less than 5 stars for SPF 50. European labelling will change soon, to a simpler ‘Low’ to ‘Very high’.

You should apply at least 2mg/cm2 exposed skin. For those who don’t pack mini-scales and a planimeter with their beach-towels, this means the average adult needs around two table-spoons. Apply at least 20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply 2 hourly, or after swimming/sweating/towelling yourself, even for water-resistant products. Some swimwear (Spinali Design) contain UV sensors to remind you, via your smartphone, when to reapply.

Some sunscreen ingredients have safety question-marks. Oxybenzone have oestrogen-like effects and retinyl palmitate causes cancer in rats (both, at high doses). Some sunscreens actually increase free-radicle release in the skin.

These safety concerns may not be material in practise, but, regardless, using sunscreens isn’t carte blanche for excessive sun-worship. They don’t give 100% protection, and limiting intense sun exposure, by wearing hats and sun-protective clothing is also necessary. Consider UV-filter sunglasses too, as UV can cause cataracts.

Our skin uses sunlight to make vitamin D, and excessive sunscreen use can interfere. Vitamin D may help prevent cancer. Although it is present in some foods, skin production is still important.

How about sun-tan alternatives? Tanning beds frequently expose users to even more UV than natural sunlight and should be avoided.

Many ‘self-tans’ use chemicals which react with skin protein, turning them dark. They’re probably safe, but can also enhance free-radicle production in skin, so you must use sunscreen after them.

The verdict? Do use sunscreen, and do enjoy the sun, but be sensible and stay safe.

Next time I’ll advise on treating sunburn, and discuss long-term effects of too much sun.

Hydropetide Product Review

I was asked to do a Hydropetide Product Review recently. I was lucky enough to be sent a few items to try out. And they have become my go to face care over the last 2 months. Now you all know I try all sorts of beauty products being in the professional industry. I won’t just do a review after 2-5 days either. I like to give the product a chance for my skin cells to catch up. You need around 28 days to really see a difference when using something new. This is the length of time it takes for the skin to renew itself from base layer to the dermis. Samples of things you get in Boots or drug stores really are only to check that your not allergic to the products. So don’t be disappointed if that new cream doesn’t preform as well as you think it should. Their are 2 main factors to this…One is the reason I have explained and the other is that the strength of over the counter skin care is usually like making a cupa with a tea bag that’s been used 10 times or so!!! So watered down its no wonder those wrinkles aren’t vanishing faster. Pro products are always a better investment.

First up is Solar Defense, it’s a broad spectrum sun protector. This basically means it has both UVA and UVB filters. UVA’s are the nasty rays that age the skin and UVB’s are the ones that will burn. In turn if you burn their are further UVC Rays that harm the skin in the form of cancer. So ladies and gents wear a broad spectrum factor cream every day of every year. Come rain or shine. I’m always told my skin is perfect…Well it’s a combination of a healthy diet, loads of water and incredible skin care.

Hydropetide Product Review

Solar Defence glides on and its consistency feels slightly grainy at first but then the micro beads burst delivering its benefits to the skin. It blends and self adjusts to the natural skin tones you already have. It is quite frankly amazing. It smoothes out the completion and flawlessly covers the skin all ready for your foundation. It also contains anti inflammatories and antioxidants. This will help you fight the horrid signs of ageing and be your new best friend I can assure you of that!

It’s a non-greasy oil free sunscreen packed with moister. Really rich in protein and it also helps to decrease the secretion of oil that can build up though it the day. You know that shiny lack lustre appearance you might get mid afternoon, when all you really want to do is reapply your foundation once again.

With is skin adjusting properties it perfectly camouflages mild hyperpigmentation and redness. It creates a perfect even, flawless, matte finish. Containing Aloe, niacin and hyaluronic acid it perfectly balances hydration. In turn it transforms fine lines and wrinkles. Now that’s what us women in our 40’s really need.

Eye Authority cream immediately brightens any dark circles you may have and it softens expression lines. It will decrease wrinkles and lastly it helps banish puffiness. Phew that’s a lot to expect isn’t it. But after using this for 6 weeks I can honestly say it works. Now my first impression of this was a little different…it irritated my eyes. Yes I’m honest with you all. This was in fact all my own fault. You need the smallest amount and one tube should actually last you 6 months. The rate I was putting it on it would have only lasted me all of 3-4 weeks!! Less is more in this case! It contains Hesperdin known for its warming and circulatory benefits. Hence the eye irritation after applying a large pea sized amount around each eye! I have noticed (after using a 1/8 of a pea size little drop to each eye) a lift to my eyes and my dark circles are a thing of the past.

It contains 13 different peptides and a small amount of HA (hyaluronic acid) that perfectly hydrate the eyes. Normally you have to avoid using HA around the delicate eye area as it will cause puffiness. HA holds 1000 times its body weight in water so it’s really hydrating and can plump out the skin. Perfect for the face but not around the eyes. Eye Authority has just the right amount that smoothes out pesky fine lines perfectly without causing eye make up to crease or feel heavy. Just don’t use too much! Both products are firmly in my bathroom cabinet and will be I feel for a long time! They have an extensive range of lifting products I’m keen to review now after finding this brand.

Learning To Listen To Your Body

Recently I came down with a bout of stress related illness and I beat myself up over having time off. I felt like I was letting everyone down. Now we all get sick and we can’t help it. When it happens we all need to listen to our bodies and just go with it. It’s harder said than done learning to listen to your body and not push yourself so hard. I’m the worst for this as I will try to everything. Work full time, commute an hour to and from work, do photography at the weekends and evenings then edit those pictures and schedule articles on my days off. When I tell people what my week is like the response is always “How the heck do you do it all” In truth I have no idea. So it would make sense that my body sent me a persuasive little message. Sarah just stop….Slow down your not ever going to be a super hero. Stepping outside ones self and looking in as though you were a good friend is something we all need to do now and then.

Learning to Listen To Your Body-1

Reevaluating your life is a good thing. If you need some time off to recharge your energy then so be it.

My top 10 Tips For Listening To Your Body

1. Take a deep breath and take care of No1. Sometimes this is as important as looking after others.
2. Don’t stress out over the fact you can’t manage to do everything. These are what I have had to preach to myself over the last week!
3. Make a nice cup of tea, take a bath, get into clean pjs and get back in bed.
4. Turn off your phone when you get in from work or at 6pm
5. Don’t let others make you feel bad that you need to take care for yourself.
6. Learn to say NO.
8. Know your limits and don’t push yourself too hard.
9. Relax as stress builds up and can cause serious health problems.
10. Finally grab a good book and let your body really relax with out social media and drift off to sleep!

I believe it’s important for us to help others in life. If your feeling stressed out or poorly then learning to listen to your body can help with a lifetime of difficulties.
