Cann – Into The Night | Music Review

Former Ou Est le Swimming Pool bassist Caan‘s single ‘Into The Night’ is a delicious slice of downbeat electro. A gem of a single and if Frost operated such a thing then we’d have it as Single of The Week. If you like this song then head to his website where there is a free track waiting for you. Catch him on tour soon, including a show at Dingwalls in Camden on 31st May.

Pint Shot Riot – Viva England | Music Review

“All Together Now” by The Farm is the standard against which all football songs are judged by this writer. Obviously all fail to come anywhere near that stand but ‘Viva England’ by Coventry rockers Pint Shot Riot is a worthy effort. The band have football pedigree too, with their songs being on both the FIFA 2010 and FIFA 2012 computer games.

The song is released on 28th May is a good attempt at a terrace anthem with it’s “I know I am, I’m sure I am, I’m England ’til I die” refrain. It’s decent enough and one to pop on the car during Euro 2012 (with those rubbish car flags if you’re that way inclined). Would I buy it? Yes, not least of all because it helps two great causes with all the proceeds going to the Homeless FA and the Homeless World Cup Foundation. The Homeless World Cup being the competition that discovered Manchester United’s bizarre signing (a story that hasn’t run it’s full course yet) Bebe. As for the band – one to watch.

‘Viva England’ is released on 28th May

Male & British | Friday Five

Yes, you should be working but you can’t be bothered. This is the bit where Frost will introduce you to five brilliant acts that if you’re not listening to already, then you ought to be. Following on from last week’s Female & British piece, we thought we’d showcase some of the great male-fronted British bands out there.

This week the brief is British and Female.

Alto45 are a great Suffolk-based indie band whose influences probably include The Delgados, The Postal Service and Graham Coxon. Stunning!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sRYouwEq0Q&w=560&h=315]
Tom Williams & The Boat – listen to them loud and enjoy. Indie-folk-rock etc. Thinking man’s music.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAFXlE41b2I&w=560&h=315]
The Sea are a rather stunning rock band, comprised of brothers Peter and Alex Chisolm. A novelty that they’re from Cornwall, too.

Something Personal are a bunch of Welsh-based ruffians. They look ugly as sin but don’t let that put you off listening as they make music that is beautiful. Something for the weekend!

The Great Park is splendid. It’s the nom de plume of Berlin-based “problem folk” singer Stephen Burch. Check out a lot more of stuff here, including a lot of his work available to download free.

Darksiders II follows the exploits of DEATH, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, in an action-packed tale that runs parallel to the events in the original Darksiders game. This epic journey propels DEATH through various light and dark realms as he tries to redeem his brother WAR, the horseman blamed for prematurely starting the Apocalypse in Darksiders.

The original Darksiders, released in January 2010, received critical acclaim including the Best Fantasy Game 2010 award from IGN. Darksiders followed the story of WAR, wrongly accused of starting the apocalypse, on a quest to reclaim lost honor and take revenge on those who wronged him.

Be Part of Art!

Have you ever wondered who the Mona Lisa was? Or perhaps imagined what it would be like to see your likeness on display in a gallery?

Next month, Gérard Rancinan is offering attendees at his Wonderful World exhibition the chance to be immortalised as part of the final composition in the series, which will be shot entirely on-site at the Londonewcastle Project Space.

Presented by The Future Tense in association with Opera Gallery and Londonewcastle, Wonderful World is the concluding part in Rancinan’s seven-year Trilogy of the Moderns.  Fresh from La Triennale di Milano, photographer Rancinan brings this revolution in three acts to a close, debuting the complete Wonderful World series to the UK public.

With galleries one and two housing the main exhibition of 15 large format works from Wonderful World, gallery three will feature a purpose-built set and studio, offering a voyeuristic glimpse behind the scenes of a fine art photo shoot. Repeat visits will reveal the organic nature of studio life – part art installation, part film set, part soap opera – as the shoot moves from concept, through production and postproduction, to the climactic unveiling of the finished work at a special reception on Wednesday 20th June.

To celebrate the completion of Trilogy of the Moderns, The Future Tense will publish a new print edition by Gérard Rancinan. Limited to a signed edition of 20 + 4 Artist Proofs, the work will be available only to those attending the show. A pop-up store will also sell related merchandise including the supporting books.

Wonderful World will open to the public at a launch reception from 6.30pm on Thursday 7th June 2012 (part of East London’s First Thursday late night art openings) and will remain on view until Sunday 24th June 2012.  Photoshoot auditions will be held on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June, from 11 am to 6pm, with the shoot itself being on Monday 11 June.

Wonderful World runs from 7 – 24 June 2012 at Londonewcastle Project Space, 28 Redchurch Street, London E2 7DP:  Tuesday to Saturday, 11am-7pm; Sunday, Noon-6pm; closed on Monday.  There will be an artist signing on 16 June from 12 – 1.30 pm; curator-guided tours on 17 June at 12, 2 and 4pm; and an unveiling reception on 17 June from 6.30 – 9.30 pm.  For more information visit the artist’s website at www.rancinan.com.
