Partypoker Announce Mike Sexton as New Chairman

After fifteen years as the voice of World Poker Tour, Mike Sexton is to take on the role of chairman of the organization that he helped to found in 2001.  He will be replaced by Tony Dundst, who had previously stood in for Sexton at the mic.

Sexton speaks with genuine affection of his time at World Poker Tour.  “It has been an honour and a privilege to work with the WPT since 2002…When WPT was launched it was a dream come true and to be there from the beginning and see how the WPT changed the poker world forever by essentially turning poker into a televised sport has been amazing.”  He said that to work for both companies would be “unfair” and that his new role is “an opportunity and challenge I simply don’t want to pass up”.

Known worldwide, WPT screens in sixty-six countries, for his catch phrase: “May all your cards be live and all your pots be monsters”, Sexton was also a serious poker player with twenty-five years-experience behind him before he sat in front of a mic.  He has a World Series of Poker bracelet, a WPT title and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.

The sixty-nine-year-old ex-paratrooper seems undaunted by the challenges of his new role. “As Chairman I look forward to achieving our mission statement, working with partypoker staff, working with partypoker Live president John Duthie and most importantly working with the players.”  On their blog, partypoker have outlined the new chairman’s responsibilities:

  • Invest in software development to deliver an industry leading player experience
  • Improve customer services and strive to resolve player issues in the same day
  • Reward the loyalty of players who start games and keep the action going
  • Look after smaller bankroll players with value added promotions
  • Fight against the use of third party software that gives an unfair advantage
  • Invest marketing budgets within the poker community
  • Develop partypoker Live to become the largest live poker tour in the world
  • Support partners and have their backs
  • Only appoint management who get poker, who are trusted, and who actually care
  • Hold hands up to the poker community when mistakes are made

At a time of life when most people are looking forward to a gentle retirement, Sexton may be about to take on his most demanding role yet. “My dad told me a long time ago, ‘Don’t ever retire if you are healthy and you enjoy what you are doing’.”  Clearly Sexton’s enthusiasm for the game and the huge challenges ahead of him remains undiminished. “I love playing against the best.  It’s not a gruelling, painful experience like it is for some people, because I really enjoy the challenge of it.  I am really looking forward to working with people that love the game like I do. We are not aiming for second place.”

Things To Do Before 30: High Rolling Poker

I have always been a very low-risk type of person, but in another alternate universe I am not such a mouse. I am a hard-core, high-stakes, high-rolling poker millionaire. Poker is something that has become hugely popular in recent years. It is glamarous and the stakes are super high. You can lose big but you can also become a millionaire. There is also a certain amount of skill involved, so you can tip the odds in your favour. Victoria Coren is one of the big names that made poker mainstream. She has total winnings of a staggering £1.43million after becoming the first ever two-time winner of the European Poker Tour. This year she won a cash prize of £391,932 – and a watch worth more than £4,000.

I would have loved to have taken part in the PCA 10 Poker 2013 – $100k Super High Roller Poker. Unfortunately I don’t have the skill yet, but hopefully one day. Until then I can live vicariously through episode one of the $100k PCA 2013 Super High Roller live Poker Star, starring Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari, Steve O’Dwyer and Ike Haxton, with cameo appearances from Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan. Poker 2013 live tournament series. Day 2 at PCA 2013 live poker tournament and the prizepool is set at a cool $5.7m, with over $2m going to the winner. Who will win the battle of the finest mind in Poker? Our feature table line-up is stellar: Tom Dwan, Antonio Esfandiari, ElkY, Dan Shak, Steve O’Dwyer, Vivek Rajkumar and JC Alvarado.

£5.7 million prize pool? Over £2 million going to the winner. Wowzers. There is also a really good cast of the great and good of poker.

After the excitement of that episode you can check out episode two which is as good as the first poker live tournament.

Are Poker Players Cool Or Just Nerds? Here’s One That’s Both

Do you think poker players are cool or nerds? It’s not always easy to tell.

Back in the day they most definitely had a reputation for being cool, and this was also part of the essential bluff. Remember the scene in Cool Hand Luke, where the eponymous character keeps repeating “Kick a buck”? Paul Newman was undeniably cool as a cucumber because he simply didn’t care whether he won or lost. But he won anyway, this was after all an American movie where the cool, good-looking guy wins. He would undoubtedly have “got the gal” too, but it was a prison movie.

Since poker has become more popular over the last ten years or so, with the advent of major online tournaments, you can’t help but think that many players are trying a bit too hard to be cool, and failing very badly.

It seems essential to wear any combination of the following at a poker table: a hoodie, sunglasses, a Stetson hat, a baseball cap (preferably styled back to front), a beanie hat, and something a bit wacky to make you stand out from the rest. It’s also essential to try and look mean and cool, carefully weighing the possibilities of everything about the game.
Now some of these players are real, but others are most definitely nerds who are trying way too hard. Many also look distinctly unhealthy and, consequently, wear very baggy tops. It’s almost as if they’ve spent too long sitting in chairs in darkened smoke-filled rooms…

In the coolness stakes though you quickly get to sort the wheat from the chaff if you watch any of these poker tournaments online, but this isn’t always about who wins. You can be a genuine nerd and still be successful. In fact, it probably helps. In real life, the game of poker isn’t always won by the “Cool Hand Luke” character, but by the nerd who calls his bluff on a mathematical formulaic basis and who is blissfully unaware of whether he or she is cool or not.

Some of the best players today seem to combine these two types of personality, and refreshingly there are an increasing number of female players. UK player Sinem Melin (interestingly named ‘Sin’ for short) was recently featured in The Independent having been successful in getting Full Tilt Poker sponsorship.

Melin is certainly no nerd, but nor does she try too hard to be cool either. She reached the final tables of both the UKIPT Brighton Main Event in 2011 and the GUKPT London Main Event last year. She signed on with Full Tilt as an ambassador in the summer of 2013 along with Ben Jenkins, Martins Adeniya and Ireland’s Dermot Blain.

Melin has explained how her down-to-earth personality actually helps her game as it gains the opponents’ trust, which means she can get away with more bluffs. This in itself is sort of cool by not trying to be cool, which is doubly confusing!

5 Fun Life Skills To Improve Your Life

5 fun life skills to improve your lifeIt probably is possible to go through life without developing any life skills at all. But would it be easier? I think not. With that in mind here is a fun little list of 5 fun life skills to improve your life. Add your own below.

Cooking

By the time you get out of your teens you should be able to whip up one amazing dish. By the time you hit thirty, you should have at least five amazing dishes that you can easily make that people compliment you on. This should be made without stress and fuss.

Driving

Driving is an unparallelled life skill. Running a car may be expensive but freedom costs money. Nothing beats being able to get into a car and go anywhere you want. It is debatable whether or not you are truly grown up until you can drive.

Dancing

Being able to dance is definitely a strength in life. So many social occasions call for it. If you don’t have natural rhythm then just take some classes and know your way around a fox trot. It will make you much more appealing to the opposite sex and people will think you are talented and sophisticated.

Games

Any party will probably include games, and dinner parties generally include post games fun. For something more entertaining than your average board game, and most things are, getting in touch with your gambling skills for an occasional flutter is fun. I am not talking about online gambling, but poker with friends is always lots of fun and very interactive. Brush up your card skills and bleed them dry.

Sport

No, not watching. Unless the sound is off and it is just for some eye candy. Learning a sport is an invaluable skill to improve your life. It will keep you fit, help you meet new people and maybe even get some fresh air. Take a class, do Zumba, running, football, yoga, anything you want. It will be another skill that will improve your life. I recently did Anti-Gravity Yoga which was different and lots of fun.

What do you think? What other fun life skills are there?

Survival of the fittest: Dirk Nowitzki’s Adaptability

5793624664_55cd9e4c11_o

When Dirk Nowitzki was first drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the ninth pick in the 1998 draft, he sported a 7-foot lanky frame with quite a reach and a long wingspan to prevent perimeter defenders from swatting the ball. He was immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he was labelled as soft and delicate. You see, the German cager was not an immediate powerhouse. With his thin physique, he relied on spot up jumpers and chances from beyond the arc. Nobody expected the future star to provide an impact early on. And surely, during his career, Nowitzki shot a few air balls and had plenty of rookie mistakes, but that did not stop the Maverick forward to improve and expand his style of play.

Sharp shooting days
With the height that he possessed, the Wurzburg-born Maverick was a nightmare for his shorter defenders. Although quicker than most players in his position, the young Nowitzki was easily manhandled and out-powered in the low post. His slashing skills were still undeveloped. He cannot be trusted as the main go-to guy to handle the ball in the post or while driving to the rim. With a thin frame, the ball is easily swiped off by tinier and quicker defenders. Instead of being discouraged, the 7 footer developed his signature one-legged fade away, which up to this day is almost impossible to defend. It’s a good thing that he was teamed up with Steve Nash in his early years.

Sharp shooting plus rim slashing
As Dirk aged and developed by the entire cast of the Mavericks, the German expanded his style of play to make defenders second-guess his offensive tactics. In fact, the German PF notched his first NBA Championship in 2011 and earned his MVP Finals title too. He combined aggressiveness in the post while combining a finesse in a finger roll finish to his arsenal. It’s a good thing that he had Shawn Marion and Tyson Chandler to lighten the defensive and rebounding load. Unluckily, the Mavericks failed to go for a back-to-back and even failed to enter the 2013 playoffs. They could go early with their summer workouts or Marion, who is known as a poker lover, may want to host a friendly game of cards. Luckily, Nowitzki can participate anytime with the availability of online sites like PartyPoker Deutsch. It’s also a good way to improve rapport and focus. Just like basketball, there are basic skills in poker that are needed in order for the player to survive and even win the table. Focus, for one, allows a player to concentrate on his cards and the community cards as well even with the distractions of other players such as facial expressions and blatant bluffing methods. Also, poker players need to be snappy with their decisions, making a split-second move without compromising his play. Finally, playing poker is a good way to create a healthy camaraderie between you and other players even if there are real stakes involved. However, chemistry is always the key—and poker might just be the formula—come another 82 games next season.

French Investor Could Save Full Tilt

Full Tilt has said it has received an offer to buy it from French investment company Bernard Tapie. The deal could mean more than $300 million currently owed to players could be paid back.

However the deal will only happen if the company can resolve its legal problems with the US government.

The investor Bernard Tapie is best well-known for owning German sportswear company Adidas for a few years in the 1990s
In June the poker world was stunned when Full Tilt was shutdown worldwide after it had its channel island gambling licence suspended. Federal prosecutors accused Full Tilt of being a giant Ponzi scheme.

This was especially shocking as the site is predominantly owned by some of the most famous poker players in the world including Chris Ferguson and Howard Lederer.

The site is alleged to have paid $444 million in players money to board members leaving it owing far more money than it has.

Full Tilt was first sued by the US government in April. Although initially Full Tilt argued that players accounts were segregated from operating activities. It has subsequently been discovered that they were drained regularly.
