· Rock icons beat pop princes in 2013 music review

· 8 out of 10 Brits think it hasn’t been a ‘golden year’ for pop

· Prince William belting out Livin’ On A Prayer beats Miley Cyrus’ twerk at VMAs

· The Big Reunion tour voted a bigger music moment than Beyonce’s surprise album

The Rolling Stones’ performance at Glastonbury has been named the biggest music moment of 2013.

With a combined age of 273, the Stones have romped to victory and shown the pop stars of today how to put on a show. The rockers not only came out top in a review of the year’s music high and lows by free music streaming service blinkbox music, but trounced pop sensations One Direction.

The Best Song Ever singers – with a combined age of 97 – came bottom of the top 20 list with the launch of their movie. To add insult to injury, the only other entry featuring the boys is Taylor Swift’s swipe at Harry Styles as he spoke at the MTV Video Music Awards, coming in at number 19.

Proof that a Rolling Stone gathers no moss, Mick and the gang’s epic performance at this year’s festival topped the survey by a landslide, with 1 in 4 putting them on top – EIGHT TIMES more than those backing the 1D boys.

In another sign of respect for the elder statesmen of music, the death of music icon Lou Reed came in second, followed in third place by the return of legend David Bowie with his new album Where Are We Now?.

2013 was a year of comebacks and reunions, including news that McFly and Busted would form a super group (4th), Eminem’s epic return (8th) and 90s pop band B*witched with The Big Reunion gang going on tour (10th) – a bigger moment than Beyonce’s surprise album (11th).

The future King of England can take a bow after his performance with Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift (6th) eclipsed Miley Cyrus’ twerk-tastic We Can’t Stop/Blurred Lines show stopper at the VMAs (7th).

The summer time smash hit Get Lucky by Daft Punk was the only song entry in the survey (15th) whilst the naughty video to Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines was the only video entry, but failed to make it into the top 10 (12th).

Despite huge music moments over the past 12 months, 8 out of 10 Brits didn’t think 2013 was a golden year for pop music.

Over 2000 British adults were surveyed by One Poll for blinkbox music. Here is the full list:

Top VMA 2013 Performances Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, N’Sync

THAT controversial Miley Cyrus performance. Made worse with the duet after with Robin Thicke. If you listen to the ‘Blurred Lines’ lyrics and watch the video it will make you very uncomfortable watching Cyrus twerk on the 36-year-old married father-of-one. And the tongue and the crotch grabbing? If she wanted attention, she got it. Rather awkwardly, her father was in the front row.

N’Sync Return.

Katy Perry

Lady Gaga

Justin Timberlake

Taylor Swift allegedly dissing Harry Styles

Will Smith and Family React to Miley Cyrus Twerking – This is pretty funny.

What did you think of the VMAs? Did you like Miley Cyrus’s performance?

Lady Gaga Tops DoSomething.org’s ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ List; Sophia Bush Named ‘Fan Favorite’, Bieber Shoots up the Rankings this Year; New Trend is Couples

DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations that helps teens take action on causes they care about, it released its fourth annual ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list.

Lady Gaga continues her reign as the star who uses her celebrity to do the most good. Known for her support of gay rights, AIDS, and poverty, she focused primarily this year on bullying, even taking her thoughts to the White House in December. She also announced the creation of her own charity, the Born this Way Foundation, which aims to empower youth and lead them to a brave new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.

Making a meteoric rise to number two this year is Justin Bieber , up from number 10 last year. His fast rise is due to his prolific work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools in Laos and Guatemala. Justin is also a consistent supporter of Make-A-Wish, raised funds for charity with his fragrance and holiday album, and recently distributed $100,000 to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

“There are some interesting trends from this year’s list,” says Aria Finger, COO of DoSomething.org. “It’s dominated by young celebrities and we also see so many couples. Last year the list had its first power couple, Ashton and Demi who have now broken up, and this year there are a total of four couples. Doing good is definitely fun in groups.”

For the first time ever, DoSomething.org’s panel of social media and mobile experts incorporated Facebook voting to help them determine the impact of celebrities reaching an audience with their cause. The criteria stipulated giving money wasn’t enough to count as creating impact; instead, a celebrity needed to take an action others could emulate, like writing articles, building houses, or founding an organization. Facebook fans voted Sophia Bush as the first ‘Fan Favorite.’

The 2011 ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list:

1. Lady Gaga
2. Justin Bieber
3. George Clooney
4. Will & Jada Pinkett Smith
5. Leonardo DiCaprio
6. Matt Damon
7. Ellen DeGeneres
8. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
9. Dwight Howard
10. Demi Lovato
11. Shakira
12. Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore
13. will.i.am
14. Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert
15. Nick Cannon
16. Lea Michele
17. Daniel Radcliffe
18. Miley Cyrus
19. Coldplay
20. Taylor Swift

“There are a handful of other celebrities who just missed the cut-off this year,” notes Finger. “We look forward to seeing what they will do in 2012.” Current speculations and predictions from DoSomething.org include:

* Will Jay-Z and Beyonce, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake each use their massive popularity and talent for social change next year?
* How will Zoey Dechanel use her new star power for good?
* We suspect Bieber’s good heart will rub-off on Selena Gomez and catapult her to the list next year.
* With Tim Tebow being the most talked about athlete of 2011, we’re excited to see how he uses his celebrity for good in the coming year.

To determine the rankings, DoSomething.org used its research team and an expert panel, who focused on three elements: popularity, influence, and impact. The first two were calculated using each celebrity’s number of Twitter followers and Facebook likes, as well as their IMDB Pro Scores, Billboard Social 50 ranking, and number of ChaCha inquiries.

The Karate Kid review by Junior Smart {Film}

The 1984 coming-of-age film comes of age with a modest makeover with solid characters and fluid performances that exceed your expectations. The Karate Kid, also known as The Kung Fu Dream in China, and Best Kid in Japan and South Korea, is a 2010 martial arts remake of the 1984 film of the same name.

Although Karate Kid has numerous differences to the original (for example the chief location is now china instead of Los Angeles and the lead protagonist is much younger and also an Afro-American). The significant core values and the spirit of the original plot remain. A bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor and through the discipline of martial arts learns the value of respect, honour, friendship and love.

The film was directed by Harald Zwart and produced by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and stars none other than his son Jaden Smith as the lead character Dre Parker. Jaden Smith looks good, moves like magic on the screen and strikes just the right amount of balance between inquisitiveness and annoyance. Moving from Detroit to china with his mother Dre finds himself out of his depth and struggling with issues of acceptance he falls foul of the school bully; an encounter that will change his life forever.

Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han, the apartment’s maintenance man with hidden skills in kung fu who takes a curious interest in Dre and then takes him under his wing. Chan is exceptional as usual; if memory serves me correctly I don’t think I have witnessed such a martial arts master who has appealed so much to as many generations as himself. I believe at one stage he even had a cartoon series, so just knowledge of his track record makes him immediately likeable and credible in his part. There is some on screen chemistry between Dre and Han that creates expected warm fuzzy feelings and it serves its purpose in driving the story forward. Whilst the movie goes a long way to developing the characters it is perhaps not as impressive or immersive as some other films of this genre yet it does meet its objective.

Filmed in china the film makers wisely decided to cash in on the rich history of the geographical location. There are some lovely shots of mountains, monks training and great walls of china and often lots of history is revealed to the audience as well as the relevant discipline there to be learned by Dre.

One of the core strengths of this film is the characterisation. Being a remake this film could easily fail short in viewer’s expectations by allowing itself to be compared too easily to what is now regarded as a masterpiece. However watching this film you get the feeling that what they tried to do was compliment the original film rather than replace it. As such it stands up as a feel good fight movie in its own right. The fight sequences are well choreographed and much grittier than the original. You can visualise Will Smith wanting to be there in person to support his son through the rough and tumble parts of the filmmaking process because there are some solid blows in the fight sequences that make you wince. And there is something that has to be said for a 12 year old that can make a Kung Fu combat sequence believable. You have to admire the child’s flexibility and courage and if anything you feel more on his side because you know what he is up against. There are also some nice nods to the original film for example in one scene Dre walks in on Mr. Han trying to catch a fly with chopsticks which after a few attempts Chan’s character ends up swatting it against a wall with a modern fly swatter.

In conclusion fantastic performances and a strong script bring this rendition of Karate Kid bang up to date. Lets face it this is the kind of films that you need in the summer season, it has good values and is great fun for all the family.
