The Menopause Is A Mystery For One In Five Women… Kira Survey Reveals Dangerous Knowledge Gap

1

Two out of five women who have gone through the menopause admit they were not prepared for the hormonal upheaval that comes with the change of life, and only one in four women aged 40 to 60 is confident she knows enough about the way hormones affect her daily life.

Although this milestone is a health challenge every woman will face, for many women menopause remains shrouded in mystery according to new research from Kira the women’s supplement specialists, has revealed. The research which surveyed 1,000 women found that one in five (21%) respondents said they did not understand the change of life. Perhaps not surprisingly, uncertainty is more common among women aged 20 to 40, with a third (32%) admitting they are not confident they understand the menopause.2

But shockingly, almost one in ten (9%) of women in the age range where they are likely to be experiencing some symptoms, or may already have stopped menstruating, admit they are not sure what the menopause is.

Of those who had already gone through menopause, almost half (47%) felt they were not properly informed. One in four (25%) admitted they were not prepared and almost one in five (18%) did not seek advice on the health implications and symptom control.

The implications of these insights are alarming as the hormonal changes associated with menopause can have a huge impact on health and emotional wellbeing.

On average, women in the UK reach menopause — which is defined as a year without a period— at the age of 51.  As levels of the hormone oestrogen fall, it triggers a range of symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, heart palpitations, headaches, disturbed sleep, headaches, mood swings, depression, loss of libido, vaginal dryness and urinary tract infections. Resources like Wisp women’s health offer support and treatment options tailored to managing these symptoms and improving overall well-being.

Dr Catherine HoodBut there are also unseen changes. Dr Catherine Hood a women’s health specialist and an advisor to Kira says: “The incidence of coronary heart disease — which is Britain’s biggest killer — rises dramatically after menopause.  This is because oestrogen raises beneficial HDL cholesterol, lowers unhealthy LDL cholesterol, and improves heart and vascular function, so as oestrogen falls after menopause women lose all those heart-healthy benefits.

“Bone density also falls, which increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. One in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone. Worse still, of the 70,000 osteoporotic hip fractures each year, about 30% of patients will die within a year due to causes related to the fracture.

Dr Catherine Hood adds: “The lack of awareness surrounding menopause which this research has uncovered is very worrying. Ignorance is not bliss, it is being blind to the health challenges which come with the menopause. It also means women are blind to the positive steps they can take to bolster their health and relieve troublesome symptoms.”

“You don’t always have to resort to Hormone Replacement Therapy, and some women should not as there are times it can actually increase the risk of heart disease.

“If you prefer a more natural approach, there are supplements and herbal remedies which have been shown to support health and wellbeing and counter common problems such as hot flushes, night sweats and sleep disruption.”

Kira, one of the most trusted names in women’s’ supplements, has developed a range of products which support health and wellbeing during this time of change.

Kira’s traditional herbal products are fully accredited and carry the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) logo — which ensures they are made to the same exacting standards expected of pharmaceutical medicines. THR accreditation guarantees you receive the same dose every time and the remedy is free from any harmful additives.

Dr Catherine Hood in summary notes: “A healthy diet and plenty of exercise can also make menopause more manageable, but busy lifestyles mean a little extra help from a supplement or herbal remedy is often beneficial.

“Many of my patients say they find herbal remedies helpful, however the quality of these products can vary dramatically, so I would strongly advise against buying any herbal product that does not carry the THR logo.”

Menopause marvels from Kira…

Kira Menopause relief (this product falls under the traditional herbal registration).

Every Kira Menopause relief tablet contains a consistent, standardised 6.5mg extract of Black cohosh (cimicifuga racemosa l), which is the equivalent of up to 55mg of dried root. A member of the buttercup family, black cohosh is also known as squawroot because Native Americans used the dried roots and underground stems, known as rhizomes, to relieve hot flushes, night sweats and other symptoms of menopause.

A 12-week double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 304 women with menopausal symptoms found black cohosh relieved symptoms more effectively than placebo.  A smaller study, also double-blinded with a placebo control, found that black cohosh was as effective as HRT at controlling hot flushes and other menopause symptoms.

You should not take Kira Menopause relief if you are:

  • suffering from liver or kidney disease (e.g. hepatitis, jaundice or cirrhosis) or if you have suffered such problems in the past.
  • suffering or have previously suffered from an oestrogen-dependent tumour
  • are of child-bearing age and not using contraception
  • are lactose-intolerant

Kira Body Balance 40+ is available from Boots RRP £15.39

Kira Restful sleep (this product falls under the traditional herbal registration).

As many as three out of five post-menopausal women report problems with insomnia while symptoms such as hot flushes can undermine sleep quality.  The root of Valeriana officinalis L has traditionally been used for the temporary relief of sleep disturbances due to symptoms of mild anxiety. Meta-analysis, a super study which combined the findings of 18 randomized controlled trials, found these “suggest valerian would be effective for a subjective improvement of insomnia”.

Each Kira Restful sleep tablet contains 300mg of the dried extract of valerian root (valeriana officinalis L.) — the equivalent of up to 1,800mg of the herb.

Do not take this remedy if:

First Bentley Bentayga Rolls Off The Production Line

First Bentley Bentayga rolls off the production line (1)

The very first production Bentley Bentayga, the catalyst for one of the biggest investment programmes in the company’s history, left the assembly line at Bentley’s iconic headquarters in Crewe, UK, on Friday 27th November.

Four years on from the initial concept stage, during which time over 1,500 UK jobs have been created, the car – part of an £840 million investment programme – will now enter full production, with deliveries to customers starting in January 2016.

01-2016-bentley-bentayga-frankfurt-1

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, said: “Bentley Bentayga will be the benchmark against which all other SUVs are measured, defining a new segment – the luxury SUV.

“This car is a celebration of UK manufacturing at its very best, not only reinforcing our commitment to industry in this country, job creation and significant investment, but to our home in Crewe. This is an important moment in our history, where we reflect and celebrate, but also look ahead to delivering this extraordinary car to our customers.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues from all parts of the business for their dedication and professionalism in delivering the Bentley Bentayga. It would not have been possible to deliver this car without the support and belief from the UK Government, our parent company and other business partners. We can all take pride in this achievement.”

The first production Bentayga, finished in paint colour – Anthracite – was handcrafted across 130 hours. During the assembly process, the car passed through a new bodystore, a new paint shop and a new assembly line, all part of this substantial investment.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron, commented: “I am delighted that the first Bentley Bentayga has rolled off the production line in Crewe. It marks the culmination of a period of exceptional hard work by Bentley and its dedicated workforce as they brought this remarkable new vehicle to market.

“The Bentayga represents an ambitious £800 million investment into the Crewe factory backed by £9.5 million from the Regional Growth Fund. It has created hundreds of valuable skilled jobs for the area and secured the future of production onsite.

“Well done to all at Bentley. This is a moment of great pride for everyone who lives and works in Crewe.”

Michael Straughan, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing, addressed the company’s 4,000-strong workforce as the car was driven from the final production stage. He said: “This is a proud moment for the entire company. It’s been four years in the making and is a celebration of a sector-defining British handcrafted car.

Time To Talk Turkey – Get Ready for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, the traditional start of the American Holiday season, is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. The Thanksgiving Dinner meal is supposed to reflect one famously held in 1621, between the indigenous Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrim Fathers who settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Roast turkey is usually the centre piece served with an abundance of sides, numerous stuffing’, buttery creamed potatoes with pan gravy, caramelised sweet potatoes, green bean casserole made with Campbell’s condensed mushroom soup, squashes, sweetcorn, cranberries and Autumn root vegetables all followed by slices of pumpkin and apple and pecan pies.

Traditional Roast TurkeyMost of these ingredients, native to the Americas, would have been new to the European settlers. The exception would be the Turkey which the Spaniards had brought back from Central America in the early seventeenth century. It was not until the late Victorian era that Turkey became the symbol of a traditional Christmas dinner, an alternative to the more common goose. So whether you are thinking of celebrating with our American cousins or you need a to roast the perfect Christmas dinner centrepiece here is my perfect Turkey recipe.

Roast Turkey with Bacon, Apricot and Cranberry Stuffing                       Serves 8

4-4.5 kg Gold standard Turkey

6 Rashers Smoked Streaky Bacon

150 gr Butter

3 medium Onions, peeled

2 large Carrots, peeled

1 large Lemon halved

A small bunch of Thyme

3 Large Pieces of Rosemary

2 Bay Leaves

Sea salt & freshly ground Black Pepper

For the Stuffing

400 gr Quality minced Pork

8 Rashers Smoked Streaky Bacon

1 large White Onion peeled and very finely diced

2 sticks Celery, washed and finely diced

2 large cloves of Garlic, peeled and crushed

100 gr dried Apricots

50 gr dried Cranberries

1 large free-range egg

2 teaspoons fresh Thyme leaves

1 large handful of fresh bread crumbs

Zest of 1 Lemon

1 good pinch Grated Nutmeg

Sea salt & freshly ground Black Pepper

Olive Oil for frying

For the Turkey Gravy

2 heaped tablespoons Plain Flour

1-litre quality Chicken Stock

A good Splash of Port

Sea Salt & freshly ground Black Pepper

For the Stuffing ( Can be made in Advance )

Heat a generous splash of olive oil large frying pan and cook the bacon strips until crisp. Remove and drain on kitchen paper and cut into thin slices when cool. Add the onion, garlic and celery and onion to the saucepan and sauté for about ten minutes until soft and golden brown. Take the pan off the heat, add the breadcrumbs and stir together, transfer to a large bowl and allow to thoroughly cool. When cool add the pork mince, thyme, fried fruits, lemon zest, nutmeg, egg and lots of salt and pepper, and mix everything together well.

For the Turkey

Take the turkey out of the fridge a couple of hours before roasting to get up to room temperature. When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 450 F / 230 C / Gas mark 8. Give your turkey a good wipe, inside and out, with kitchen paper, and season the cavity really well. Next place the turkey on a board, with the neck end towards you. Find the edge of the skin that’s covering the turkey’s breasts and carefully peel it back. Gently ease your fingers and then your hand under the skin, teasing it away from the meat. You should be able to pull all the skin away from the meat, keeping it attached at the sides. Carefully spoon your prepared stuffing between the skin and the breast, tucking the flap of skin underneath to stop anything seeping out. Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time allow twenty minutes per every five hundred grammes.

Place the lemon halves, one onion, half the thyme and one piece of rosemary inside the turkey cavity. Dab the butter all over the turkey, especially over the breasts, season generously and then cover with the streaky bacon. Place the turkey on a large roasting tray, and add the chopped carrots, onions, and remaining herbs, cover with tinfoil and place in the preheated oven. Cook for twenty minutes then turn the heat down to 350 F/ 180 C / Gas Mark 4 and roast for the allotted time, or until the juices run clear from the thigh when pierced with it a small, sharp knife. Remove the tinfoil for the last forty minutes to allow the turkey to brown. Carefully lift the turkey out of the tray and rest on a tray, somewhere warm, loosely covered in foil and a couple of folded tea towels, for about an hour.

For the Gravy

Very carefully skim the surface fat from the roasting tray and add port. Place on a medium heat and sift in the flour. Stir really well and slowly pour in the stock, when the gravy starts to thicken, reduce the heat and simmer for five minutes stirring regularly. Strain it into a pan ready to reheat. Carve your turkey at the table, serve with all the trimmings, the gravy and enjoy.

Even strolling beneath the over-sized illuminated baubles of Oxford Street, on a mild November evening it still felt far too soon to embrace Christmas. Fast-forward three hours and I was positively exuding seasonal cheer – this is a show that would transform even Scrooge from selfish to elfish.

Based on the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell, the plot is fairy tale daft. A baby crawls into Santa’s sack one Christmas Eve and is raised by Elves in the North Pole. Being a fairy tale nobody mentions the fact that Buddy can place the star on top of the Christmas tree without the aid of a cherry picker, but eventually Santa ‘fesses up: Buddy is actually human and has a father in New York. As it turns out, a father who isn’t too keen on welcoming an oversized elf to the family.

At the risk of spoiling the story for those who haven’t seen the movie, suffice to say that chaos, comedy, romance and high drama follow, each element taking the narrative towards Happily Ever After as smoothly as champion skier heading down a nursery slope.

Ben Forster as Buddy is a joy. Bouncing around like a particularly nimble and enthusiastic Labrador, he has a terrific rapport with the audience and manages to be both charming and sweetly innocent. He also sings like a dream (Forster was the winner of the TV search for Jesus Christ Superstar), and makes an exceptionally good fist of songs that, while entertaining in the moment, aren’t especially memorable.

Kimberley Walsh as Jovie, the object of Buddy’s affections, is also in fabulous voice, while Joe McGann as Buddy’s dad Walter convinces as the tetchy publisher of children’s books who has been putting work ahead of family for too long.

Offering up plenty of warm and fuzzy feelings from the off, excellent teamwork sees a supporting cast singing, dancing and acting their Christmas socks off, while the design team’s clever set (‘wow’ factors come thick and fast) deserves a curtain call of its own.

Directed and choreographed by Morgan Young, if panto isn’t your cup of eggnog then there are plenty of seasonal sensations to be had here, without all the ‘behind you’ capers. And if you don’t leave the theatre wanting to spread tidings of comfort and joy, frankly you’re a lost cause.
