Johnnie Walker Red Label Takes It To The Wax…

Key visual CompressedTASTY ‘TACHE FOR THOSE IN THE MO…

– Whisky experts unveil the first ever moustache wax that enhances the flavour of your drink –

On 7th July 2015, Johnnie Walker® Red Label – the world’s most iconic whisky released an innovative range of moustache waxes in three bold flavours.

Designed to specifically compliment the Johnnie and Ginger serve – a fiery blend of Johnnie Walker Red Label whisky, ginger ale and a wedge of lime – The Boldest Wax collection has been expertly mixed by hand using 100% natural beeswax.

Connoisseurs will be able to choose from three bold blends – Piperine Pepper, Citrus Essence or Ginger Root – which not only provide scents that linger beneath the nostrils, but equally intensifies the flavour of the serve with every sip.

Mixologist Rich Woods, Head of Cocktail and Spirit Development at Duck & Waffle and Sushi Samba, says:

The citrus wax delivers real energy, and the flavours work together to give the drink a boost that really lifts a Johnnie & Ginger. This stands in contrast to the Piperine Pepper, which subtly brings out the more sophisticated fruit and caramel aromas in the drink. Finally there’s the Ginger Root, which delivers an immediate kick – and is definitely one for those who prefer a more fiery experience.

The collaboration is in response to the growing ‘mo’ trend – no longer just adorned as a mischievous motif in November – with facial hair now gracing the faces of the boldest fashion-conscious men all year round.

Oscar Ocaña, JOHNNIE WALKER Brand Director said:

“The Boldest Wax is designed to specifically enhance the flavour of a Johnnie & Ginger, and give men the chance to maintain their style on the go. John Walker was a proud moustache wearer himself – and as someone who could appreciate a classic when combined with something bold and new – we’re sure he’d have sniffed out a moustache wax that enhances the flavour of a Johnnie & Ginger as a great idea.”

Head Barber Chris Ward, from Huckle the Barber adds:

“In the last few years the number of men who request that I leave their ‘tash when shaving them has grown massively. The Boldest Wax is a great accessory for them – they’ll love how it enhances the flavour of a Johnnie & Ginger in a really unique way – and also that they can keep control of their style on the go, so they can keep looking bold all night long.”

The pocket-size wax collection was six months in the making and is now available exclusively through East London grooming hotspot Huckle The Barber (hucklethebarber.com) priced at £7.99 each (or the set of three for £20) until stocks last.

John Walker, the man himself, has a history with ginger mixers.

Brewing equipment and several barrels were found in his distillery, showing the hallmarks of that pioneering spirit for which he’s famous.

But as a man always looking forward, he’d see no justice in leaving the legacy of Johnnie & Ginger there.

A ‘Johnnie & Ginger grooming experience’ (wet shave, or facial hair grooming, and one pot of The Boldest Wax) is £35, and is available in store at Huckle the Barbers until 2nd August 2015.

The GŎNG At Shangri-La Hotel At The Shard Hosts Johnnie Walker Blue Label City Edition Cocktails…

JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL, the leading luxury Blended Scotch Whisky, has launched two stunning City Edition bottles, celebrating the spirit of the UK’s most iconic cities: London and Edinburgh.

The intricately-designed limited editions and their striking presentation boxes take the viewer on a journey through the streets of London and Edinburgh, featuring the unique architecture and attractions that make up the cities’ distinctive city skylines.

Only 4,000 of these exquisitely-designed bottles have been created, with each individually hand-numbered to create a must-have gift for whisky enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Cities Collection, which is a series of whiskies from this popular Scotch brand that has engraved on it a cityscape from different regions of the world, is back after its Dubai bottling earlier this year with two new releases. This time around appearing on the bottles are two different cities from the United Kingdom.

The first offering, the Johnnie Walker Blue Label London Edition, features a design on it which includes iconic landmarks of the UK’s capital such as Big Ben, the Gherkin, Nelson’s Column and Tower Bridge. The other new release is the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Edinburgh Edition, and it is set with a design said to pay honor to the Scottish city of the same name. It sports ‘a sweeping, spiral flow from the peak of Edinburgh Castle, including national treasures such as the Scott Monument and the Duke of Wellington alongside the city’s cobbled streets and walls’.

Limited to just 4,000 bottles, the Johnnie Walker Blue Label London and Edinburgh City Editions, noted officials from spirits giant Diageo, are now available in the United Kingdom for around £200 ($315 USD).  Available from June, the City Edition bottles are the first to be released outside of travel retail where the new Cities Collection was introduced in February with a bottle depicting Dubai. The previous Skyline Collection in travel retail featured cities such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Auckland.

Costing not much more than the standard Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the new City Edition bottles come in bespoke gift boxes with more illustrations of their respective cities. Edinburgh’s depicts Scotland’s national symbol, the thistle, and attractions such as The Balmoral Hotel and Arthur’s Seat, while London’s packaging shows famous icons including St Paul’s Cathedral.

To celebrate the launch of these exclusive limited editions, Johnnie Walker Blue Label has partnered with GŎNG at Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London and Scotch at The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, two of the most iconic landmarks featured within the limited-edition designs, to create to exclusive cocktail serves.

To mark the launch of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label City Edition bottles, the ‘Eagle Eye’ and ‘Famously Edinburgh’ cocktails were created to celebrate the best of these extraordinary cities with the remarkable smoothness of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

‘Eagle Eye’, created by Christian Maspes at GŎNG at Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London explains “Known for their intently watchful, sharp and supreme sight across some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, the eyes of an eagle are estimated to be up to eight times stronger than that of a human’s. The idea of such skill and precision – the same qualities Johnnie Walker apply when creating their rarest blend of whiskies – together with GŎNG’s unrivalled views over London were the inspiration behind the ‘Eagle Eye’, a specially created cocktail to mark the launch of Johnnie Walker Blue Label’s limited City Edition bottle, celebrating London’s iconic skyline.”

Garnished with blue ‘Johnnie Walker Striding Man walking stick’ meringue

The ‘Eagle Eye’ is currently available, priced at £17.00, with an ‘on-the-rocks’ version also available upon request.

‘Famously Edinburgh’, created by Fraser Robson, Whisky Ambassador at Scotch, the Whisky Bar at The Balmoral Hotel commented “The inspiration behind the Famously Edinburgh cocktail came from my experience of the City and all that it is known and loved for. I thought about what was famous in the City and how that relates to local people, what they famously enjoy doing and where. Whisky and tea are ingrained in every great Scot. Johnnie Walker is the world’s most famous whisky and here, at the Balmoral, situated at Edinburgh’s most famous address, guests visit for the finest cup of tea in town. These three pillars gave me the basis of my creation. Starting with a double measure of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, I look at how I could incorporate the tea. Edinburgh locals tend to have a sweet tooth so I added a tea-infused sugar syrup as a nod to that Edinburgh tradition. I was careful to ensure that Johnnie Walker Blue Label was at the forefront of the cocktail and selected some whisky barrel-aged bitters and Fino sherry to heighten those flavours. The City and the people of Edinburgh are renowned for their elegant ways, so there was only one piece of glassware for the occasion – a Champagne coupe.”

50ml Johnnie Walker Blue Label

15ml Famous Edinburgh tea-infused sugar syrup

10ml Fino sherry

2 dashes whisky barrel-aged bitters

Orange zest to spray over the glass

The ‘Famously Edinburgh’ is available at Scotch, the whisky bar at The Balmoral Hotel priced at £42.50.

Baked Figs with Honey and Balsamic Reduction

For many people of my parents generation their experience of figs used to come baked in a small sweet pastry case the ubiquitous ‘ fig roll ‘. Now I am all for a fig roll, they are quite moreish with a hot cuppa, but today most people have access to the fresh fruit. The fresh fig is far from as humble as our little biscuit, throughout history the fig has been worshipped as a powerful aphrodisiac. In pictorial representation Adam and Eve are clothed in the fig’s leaves, it is said to haven been Cleopatra’s favourite fruit and heavens above I don’t even want to go into the symbolism that runs through the D.H Lawrence poem. They are a particularly high source of iron and potassium but I don’t know if that has any causal link with their supposed qualities.

So how does one tackle a fig ? Some people find the texture can be a little off-putting ( maybe they read D.H.Lawrence ), so I would stew them down to a sticky, sweet compote with a little orange zest and a Star Anise pod. The result is delicious stirred into thick Greek style yogurt, if you have a sweet tooth you can grill them, drizzled with honey, then spoon in some chilled Mascarpone and sprinkle with chopped nuts and chocolate shavings for the easiest of desserts . For the more savoury minded why not settle down to a plate of figs, Manchego cheese, fine Iberico ham and a chilled glass of Fino sherry or simply figs and Prosciutto.

Perhaps the most popular fig dish you will see on high street bistros and restaurant menus is the classic combination baked with Goats cheese. So here is my simple take with a little tomato and olive oil salsa style dressing and a Balsamic reduction. Use two figs as a rich, indulgent starter or three for a filling lunchtime snack. The Balsamic quantities are rather generous but it is easier to make in larger quantities, smaller amounts tend to burn, it is great to have around as a simple salad dressing, to accompany grilled lamb cutlets or just a splash or two on ripe strawberries. The size of the cup is not important just use the same measure each time.

Figs Baked with Goats Cheese and a Honey Balsamic ReductionBaked Figs with Honey and Balsamic Reduction serves 4 for lunch

8 Ripe Figs

3 Soft Crottin de Chavignol

2 Handfuls of mixed Salad Leaves, washed and thoroughly dried

( Rocket, Baby Spinach, Lamb’s Tongue, Curly Endive )

12 Mixed Baby Tomatoes, Cherry, Plum and Yellow

1 Very small Red Onion, peeled and very finely diced

2 tablespoons of the best quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil

½ teaspoon Caster Sugar

Sea Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper

For the Balsamic Reduction

1 Cup of good Balsamic Vinegar

1 Cup Honey

½ Cup Oloroso ( Nutty ) Sherry

To make the dressing place the ingredients into a small, heavy bottomed pan and gently heat. Stir until the honey dissolves then bring up to a gentle simmer. Reduce by half and leave aside to thoroughly cool. The result should be a dark, glossy syrup which you can store in the fridge in a sterilised, airtight container. Before use remove from the fridge and bring up to room temperature.

For the Baked Figs

Preheat your oven to 350 F / 180 C / Gas Mark 4. Carefully cut the figs into quarters, from the top almost to the base, and arrange on a non-stick baking tray. With your fingers break up the goat’s cheese and divide between the figs. Place in the oven and bake for ten to fifteen minutes until the cheese is melted and tinged brown.

While the figs are baking cut up the tomatoes and place in a small bowl. Add the finely diced onion then sprinkle with the caster sugar and season generously. Mix together thoroughly. When the figs are done add the olive oil to the tomatoes and mix once more. To serve place the salad leaves in the centre of the plate and circle with the simple tomato salsa. Carefully place one the baked figs and using a teaspoon flick over some Balsamic reduction. Enjoy.
