Tiki Lovers Pineapple Rum – Infused with Pineapple Extract – a new Rum experience

This is a fantastic rum, perfect for Christmas.

Our Tiki Lover’s Pineapple Rum from The Bitter Truth is a rum blend infused with an all-natural, pineapple extract from South America which is allowed to rest for several weeks.  This gives the flavours of sugar cane time to mingle elegantly with fruity layers of juicy pineapple, while maintaining the full and complex aromas of the rum blend. Made using a careful blend of aged and unaged Jamaican pot-still rum, 3-year-old Barbados rum, aged in former Bourbon Whiskey barrels and some young column-still rums from Trinidad and Guyana.

This new rum is bold, vibrant and taste-rich with both the rum and pineapple characteristics being given space to shine.

The Serve: Brilliant in all tropical drinks and tiki cocktails.

Brut Zéro from Bouvet Ladubay

We were very impressed with this wine and we are very fussy indeed. It is a delicious and fun bubbly. It’s a limited edition sparkling dry wine from Bouvet Ladubay and the first time it has been available in the UK. It’s currently available at Lay & Wheeler.

As the name suggests, this cuvée has no dosage, and so has not a drop of residual sugar. As a result, the wine expresses abundant freshness and minerality, supported by bright citrus and green fruit.

The iconic Dark ‘n Stormy is Bermuda’s national drink and a trademarked cocktail, which mandates the use of Goslings Black Seal Rum. The name is said to have originated when an old salt observed that the rum floating on top of the ginger beer was the “colour of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under.”

A true taste of Bermuda – the Dark ‘n Stormy ready-to-drink can is made using Goslings Black Seal Rum and Goslings Stormy Ginger Beer with no mixing and no ice required.

Whisky – blended for Christmas

Johnny walker Blue and Famous Grouse mellow gold

Johnny Walker Blue Label and Famous Grouse Mellow Gold – two great drinks for Christmas

When my children were small they used to have a Greek childminder. When we went to pick up our kids, her entire family – aunts, uncles, in-laws from Cyprus – would often be present. They treated me and my wife as if we were part of the extended family and often we’d end up staying for dinner.

On festive occasions – Christmas, Easter, birthdays – I would usually bring a bottle of whisky. And the one that the Greek men most enjoyed was Johnny Walker – particularly the more expensive black label. They didn’t want fancy single malts, with all those peaty smells. They wanted a very smooth, high quality blended whisky.

I mention this because they would have loved Johnny Walker’s new Blue Label. It’s not cheap and it’s not something for the more serious lover of single malts, but it’s probably the smoothest and best blended whisky on the market. With lovely tastes of pepper and honey and a slight smokiness, it’s something to savour. Please don’t pollute it with ginger ale or ice. Just sip it gently, enjoying the roundness on your tongue. Perhaps wash it down with a glass of cold water, just to cleanse the palate. It’s a superb drink and worth taking time to appreciate. Incidentally it’s only available at a few selected dealers, and it costs £135 a bottle, but for that price you do get your name engraved on the bottle.

Around Christmas many of the distillers are producing slightly more distinctive types of whisky. Famous Grouse is offering something called Mellow Gold (£20 per 75cl at Tesco). It’s similar to the normal Famous Grouse – another fine blended whisky – but this one has been left in sherry and bourbon casks. As a result, it has a fuller oaky flavour and the sweetness of raisins and a touch of dried fruit. It’s a good one for Christmas, not because it’s better or worse than the regular whisky, but because Christmas is remarkable time of year and should be marked with something which is just a bit out of the ordinary.

Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky Review

Glen Moray prides itself on providing a range of excellent quality single malt whiskies at an excellent price. Yes, they come from Speyside and yes, they are the 6th biggest selling single malt whisky brand in the UK but they do not charge high prices because they understand the position that Glen Moray has strived to achieve and they are proud to offer value. NEW GLEN MORAY SHERRY CASK FINISH IS AN EXCELLENT QUALITY SINGLE MALT WHISKY AT AN EXCELLENT PRICE Frost always gets excited when a bottle comes through the door. Not that we are lushes or anything. We just like a wee dram. We got send The Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish which came with these words from the PR:
“The Glen Moray prides itself on providing a range of excellent quality single malt whiskies at an excellent
price. Yes, they come from Speyside and yes, they are the 6th biggest selling single malt whisky brand
in the UK but they do not charge high prices because they understand the position that Glen Moray
has strived to achieve and they are proud to offer value.
NEW GLEN MORAY SHERRY CASK FINISH IS AN EXCELLENT QUALITY SINGLE MALT WHISKY AT
AN EXCELLENT PRICE
The Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish offers a new twist on the traditional Glen Moray taste-profile
by adding layers of rich and spicy sweetness to the spirit’s typically light and floral flavours of
butterscotch and lemongrass. Sherry Cask Finish is a celebration of the age old tradition of maturing
whisky in the finest Oloroso sherry casks.”
But what did we think? We loved it.This whisky is from Elgin, the capital of Speyside, Scotland’s most famous whisky region. Burnished gold in colour, with toffee candy, dried fruits and cinna on the nose, this whisky has a gloriously long finish and just the right amount of sweetness. Eat with shortbread or fruit cake. We reckon it would also go well with red meat. A very fine whisky indeed.
Available from Sainsbury’s and sainsburys.co.uk price £22.00.

The Best of The London Whisky Weekender

9148716821_75e66bc557_o

With hundreds of delicious Whiskies to choose from, we were spoilt for choice at this years London Whisky Weekender. It seems almost criminal to pick a favourite as most of the exhibitors deserved a special mention and also being a novice to Whisky compared to most of my fellow attendees, I would feel slightly foolish. But if I had to pick there were some absolutely stand out drams. Obviously we didn’t make our way through the entirety of the selection…we would clearly need another hour or so, but this year I made sure that I tried out some of the less known and small batch distilleries, trying some drams that I wouldn’t normally favour such as the Peatier kinds.

With that said, our favourites this year;

Murray McBride; The Vatting Peatside

Youth is favoured here at only 6 years old, Peatside has been resting in a bourbon barrel with a combination of port pipes and a sweet sherry cask. The overpowering flavour of bacon will bowl you over in a most pleasant way. We had to go back for more.

Scapa

Scapa, originating from The Orkney mainland, is a fresh and balanced Single Malt. Aged 16, the sweet Heather Honey and flavours of autumn will leave you feeling content.

The Quiet Man 8 year old Single Malt

An Irish Whisky to add to the mix, this very new craft distillery have created something which would rival the legends. Sweet Vanilla, Honey and Spicy Oak all contribute to the smooth finish.

Michters American Whisky

A real small batch Whiskey here, Michters unblended American Whiskey is blended in Bourbon soaked barrels. The result, butterscotch, caramel and ripened fruit. Delicious.

If this has inspired you to get your dram on, then make sure you don’t miss out next year.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Serves Gentleman’s Wager Cocktail at Mayfair’s Galvin At Windows

Screen-Shot-2015-11-02-at-16.21.32JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL has created a beautiful bespoke cocktail

‘THE GENTLEMAN’S WAGER’

now being served at iconic GALVIN AT WINDOWS, Mayfair

JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL, the leading luxury Blended Scotch whisky, has created a bespoke cocktail with whisky at its heart, to celebrate the launch of the short film

 ‘THE GENTLEMAN’S WAGER II’

The short film, starring Oscar-nominated actors Jude Law and Giancarlo Giannini, tells the story of two men who enter a wager over a priceless vintage Delahaye 135S car.

As we follow Jude’s efforts to win the wager, we see that it is only through the gratitude he shows people along his journey that he is able to succeed.

Boris Ivan, Bar Manager at Michelin star London restaurant Galvin at Windows, at London Hilton on Park Lane, created the cocktail with the beautiful setting of the film – Italy, France and Monaco – in mind. Ensuring the warming flavours paid homage to the stunning European landscape and cultures.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label forms the base of the drink, which is blended with Antica Formula, a particular type of vermouth from Southern Italy, and is of geographical and cultural importance to the area. The ingredient represents the location where Jude and Giancarlo start the race, and its warm and rich flavours embody the luxury and elegance of the Italian way of life.

By contrast, the nutty and sweet Creme de Chataigne represents Monaco, the principality in France where the race fishes, and evokes the flavours of wood given to whisky while aging. A touch of chocolate bitters completes the cocktail to give a round, rich finish.

Gentleman's Wager cocktail at Galvin at Windows 1[1][2]

Commenting on the launch, Boris Ivan states: “The Gentleman’s Wager cocktail is the very embodiment of The Gentleman’s Wager II and was inspired by the beautiful setting in which the short film took place. I wanted the cocktail to be warm and full of flavour, without overpowering the senses, so I drew cues from the rich and memorable tastes, sights and smells of Italy, France and Monaco, which all feature in Jude Law’s the journey to win the wager.”

The Gentleman’s Wager cocktail (£14) is available now from Galvin at Windows.
