Sonia Rykiel – Uprooting 70's Glamour!

Paris Fashion Week paid homage to one of the most sought after and vivacious lines in fashion. Sonia Rykiel is known for her carefree charm and chic ‘no mess’ attitude, and as one of la Mode’s most experienced and knowledgeable designers, her approach to fashion is quirky, independent and extremely fun.

This S/S Season is treading the roots of 70’s fashion glamour in a big way. Illustrations of bold palates are everywhere we go. Rykiel‘s collection voiced the welcoming of sophisticated 70’s runway glory, by capturing the effects of geometric, colour-refined fashion.

Inspiring designs and vivid colour were all in the range at her Paris catwalk show. Sharp designs, playful – embedding a chic, youthful vibe.

A mix of jersey prints and skinnies. An application of heavy cotton-layered trench cuts, cute slimline dresses, stripe-inspired georgettes, silks and satins on show, along with an array of  beautifully designed tassels – in company of outrageously divine accessories.

Top Hats, eccentrically, oversized mid way strap bows, block-colour tees and open-toe wedges. This was creative 70’s characterisation taken to the max.

Rykiel took to the skies with her illustration of handbags, clutches, casual totes and stunning bucket bags – mid length to long straps,  soft fold flaps, hip length falls, in luxurious leather. Colours were bright and striking – a multi array of tan, yellow, blue and black, finishing with the dainty decor of two tone tassels – in theme with the exuberance of tassels in her top hats collection.

Beautiful and chic. Definitely a bookmark for this season’s 70’s-inspired fashion trends.

An Early Peak into A/W 2011 – Part One – It's all Colour…

Ok, so it’s January 2011, the sun is still a counterpart to our day to day routines,  however, one thing that never stops, is FASHION!

Let’s take a little peak into this A/W trends – starting with colour. We all know Burberry has shown us the gateway to mulling rouges, purples and reds. This year is going to be a runway for diverse colours, and let’s face it, no matter what the season, fashion is a playground when it comes to experimenting with colour.

Lets break this down into themes – as this year will be prompting us with a heavy mix and match of moods in colour.

Olive and Gold – The Avante Garde of rich colour beauty. An array of strong, striking bronzes, symbolising the brash fire of a woman! These colours will play happy to patterns in tweed and heavy layed cottons and knits.

Let’s shift to a flurry of Blues and Greys – think Urban meets metropolitan. Minimalist silvers and heavier metallic colours, symbolising culture and diversity. Think striking navys – baby blues, of course conceptualised with the universal pallete noir.

The richness of darker colours – Plums, Auburns, especially on heavily layered georgettes and chiffons. Deep violets on silk yarns – edgy and all about the Winter.

Now let’s get a little girly – Vibrant Pinks on scarves, knits in a pallette of lighter colours, light coloured trench coats, and woollen enthused mittens and gloves – very girl-next-door! Also, rich pinks in the Autumn will be applied to sheer layers and as an extra to ruffled blouses and details on skirts. So delicately Autumn.

Greens – A colour we all connotate with nature, green will be a big colour this Autumn – Mustard and Apple greens. Think rich and natural – energising colours.  A labyrinth of scarves and jumpers – keeping the faith of the 60’s look.

Spring & Summer 2011 – Part One – Fashion Looks – Wear It Like You Know It! {Fashion}

So here it is – the start of a fresh new year, with the fashion world upon us. For all you keen fashion lovers out there, prepare to be geared up for a wonderful selection of bright, uniformed, geometrics and an array of textures and bedazzling patterns. 2011 is indeed the year for dynamic fashion.

We see a variety of emerging and reinvented trends, year by year. This year makes a stand for some interesting themes.

Here’s a look into the Spring/Summer Key themes – Military meets Biker. Yes, the military style has been on the fashion scene for quite some time now, and even though this look is great; screaming versatility and can be worn on both a formal and casual basis, this year will highlight room for change.

Introducing the Biker/Motorcycle theme, I remember spying a biker jacket last year whilst strutting down the streets of Soho myself. This is a look that has been in the shadows of fashion since forever, and this year will be a crystal replacement to the military mode we are so used to. Quilted and zipped sleeves will also be a big look, with the added accessory of belts and shimmering bags to accompany. Alexander Wang and Balmain (a personal favourite) have a great range – for the more affordable take – be prepared to hoist River Island‘s asymmetric zip jacket – striking and edgy.

Punk Fashion – Again, this look has been in the mix of a la Rock meets Boy George, largely appealing through 2010. However and somewhat measured by the ‘crowd’ it is most suited to, probably because this look is one that is pretty hard to master, but continuously influential in the fashion world.

2011 will make an iconic stand in Punk Wear – more so in the way it will be experimented with, within other genres. Renowned brand Balmain are at the top of their league when it comes to this look – a real one to look out for – if you can configure the art of Punk to your wardrobe collection, you are doing pretty well! Think Chuck Taylor’s and Motorcycle boots! Treat yourself and take a trip down to Camden Lock and Soho, and be dazzled by the sheer range of punk enthused clothing – at a much more affordable price!

The 70’s Look – 70’s style is all about glamour, so it’s no wonder the striking geometrics and elegance of the bohemian look, are making such a comeback. Flowing dresses, silks and satins being prominent, creating a look of sophistication and feminine, earthy glamour. Faye Dunaway, Angelica Huston and Bianca Jagger are just a few examples of the range to this unique glamour.

The key to winning this style is confidence and boldness. Being experimental is a must. By day – sophisticated block patterns, deep colours. High waisted Wide Leg trousers, accompanied by cute, silk/satin blouses in lighter colours, rolled up sweaters and turtle necks – indeed a Farrah Fawcett look by day. For the evening – silks, satins and metallic patterns. Beautiful dresses with low neck cuts and sexy slits.

The 60’s Fashion Spot – 2011 makes a gateway for one of the most illustrated and sought after looks of all time. Be prepared for bright colours, fresh looking pastels, an array of florals and pinks. Check out Louis Vuitton and Jayson Brunsdon for inspiration. High waisted floral and checked skirts – pinstripe dresses in calming colours, high waisted belts in a multitude of reds, yellows and greens. Bold accessories which make for completion of this look will include heavy beads, 60’s cat-like glasses and sunglasses. Think Jacqueline Kennedy, Twiggy and Edie Sedgewick.

How to successfully shop the sales rail. {Fashion}

Here at Frost we love a bargain. So we asked fashion advisers at John Lewis how to successfully shop in the sales. We hope this guide stops any post-purchase blues.

John Lewis Fashion Advisers will be tailoring their appointments throughout the end of December and January to accommodate customers who want to find gems amongst the sales rails. The expert Fashion Advice team will be on hand to share their secrets to sale shopping, helping customers find stand-out pieces which fit, flatter and function. Fashion lovers will be advised on colour palettes, staple pieces and how to get the most for their money.

Head of Fashion Advice Amanda Slader says: “The key to savvy sales shopping is planning rather than impulse buying. Sales provide customers with the opportunity to build up a staple wardrobe of basic and classic pieces, as these are always the best bargains. It is important to remember to make sensible choices, for example, choosing a timeless little black dress is a much better sale choice than a piece from last season’s trend. Size does matter when shopping the sales as customers shouldn’t have to compromise on a good fit for reduced price.”

Amanda’s ten hot tips for shopping the sales:

1. Take inventory. Before you leave the house and hit the sales, inspect your wardrobe and make sure you know what you have and what you are missing.

2. Be strategic. Make a list of what you are hoping to find in the sales and try not to get sidetracked.

3. Wear flat shoes and comfortable clothes. You are likely to be on your feet and in and out of fitting rooms all day so it’s important to be dressed accordingly.

4. Keep it classic. Aim to build a staple wardrobe. It’s important to remember that a little black dress is a future classic and a much better investment than last season’s statement trend. The sales are a great time to pick up other timeless classics such as a trench coat by Aquascutum, figure flattering day dresses by LK Bennett and a camel coat by Hobbs. Also be on the lookout for great basics such as a fitted pencil skirt and tailored jacket from Reiss, great fitting jeans or the perfect pumps.

5. Complement your existing wardrobe. Take into account the cut, colour, shape and style that suit you. Make thoughtful purchases that reflect your signature style; the sale is not an excuse to drastically change your look.

6. Try it on. If it is not a good fit then it is not a good buy. It is always worth asking if there are more sizes in the stockroom if yours isn’t available on the shop floor.

7. Be thorough. Try everything on before buying and have a look to make sure you are aware of any faults before you make your purchase. Unless you are willing to repair it yourself it is not a good investment!

8. Check the returns policy. If you don’t have time to try anything on it’s important to know if you can return or exchange the item.

9. Avoid the lunch hour. Lunchtime is shopping rush hour! To avoid stressful shopping it’s best to hit the sales before or after work and at the weekend.

10. Accessorise. The easiest way to update your wardrobe is by accessorising. Statement jewellery by Adele Marie and John Lewis Collection will make an outfit look on trend and bright bags by Ted Baker and Aspinal are good ways to breathe new life and colour into your wardrobe.

Lanvin and H&M present a High Street Haute Couture Show in NY {Fashion}

The 18th Nov, Sofia Coppola, Andie MacDowell, Emma Roberts, Leelee Sobieski, Anna Sui, Tory Burch and Alexander Wang, among other guests, came out to celebrate the collaboration of the Lanvin for H&M collection and to enjoy show stopping designs by famed Lanvin artistic director, Alber Elbaz, at The Pierre hotel. The haute couture creations, which were customized pieces from the Lanvin for H&M collection, made their way down the catwalk with the help of famed models Asia Chow, Pixie Geldof, Dree Hemingway, Olga and Anna Dello Russo. Guests arrived on the red carpet, which was the landmarked Pierre Hotel façade recreated with NYC styled graffiti, and then they entered the hotel which was swathed with flowers, trees and greenery. It was a runway show that guests will not soon forget.

The long awaited Lanvin for H&M collection will be sold in around 200 stores worldwide. It will be launched November 20 in US and Canada, and on November 23 in the rest of the world. “It’s such a fantastic experience to see how creatively Alber Elbaz uses his designs to form a couture experience for our exclusive fashion show in New York. Working with this incredibly gifted designer has been like an ongoing fashion moment, and we’re thrilled to offer his masterpieces to our customers.” Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M. Alber Elbaz, artistic director at Lanvin, has created the women’s collection with an extraordinary ambition for H&M, bringing the codes of the house to make every single piece identifiably the work of Lanvin. For women there are dresses of breathtaking cut and joyful colour, as well as pieces full of Parisian glamour and accessories with playful “joie de vivre”.

The menswear collection designed by Lucas Ossendrijver, menswear designer at Lanvin, encapsulates the label’s complete vision of how men should dress. It’s a whole new wardrobe of covetable updated classics, with tuxedos made for daywear and jogging pants adding a whole new sporting twist. Sofia Coppola said of the collection, “I think Alber

Elbaz is great, I love what he does at Lanvin, it’s so girly and playful and confident. It’s so cool he’s working with H&M, it

makes it so accessible to all kinds of young people to be able to afford it and wear it”. And Andie MacDowell said, “I think it’s genius. I’m a big fan of Lanvin. I can afford Lanvin and my daughter can afford H&M, and now my daughter’s going to have the opportunity to have a little bit more pizzazz.” Looks from the haute couture show along with five original signed sketches from Alber Elbaz went up for auction on www.lanvinforhm.com. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICEF, as part of H&M’s “All for Children” project. The online auction will end on November 26th at midnight CET.
