Lost Peter Sellers Films Found In Skip & To Be Screened For First Time In 53 Years

Two lost Peter Sellers films found in London skip & to be screened in public for first time in 53 yearsMovie equivalent of Dead Sea Scrolls found dumped in skip

Two lost films from Peter Sellers’ early career have been found in a London skip and will be shown to the public for the very first time in 50 years at the Gala Opening of the 2014 Southend Film Festival.

Dearth of a Salesman and Insomnia is Good For You were both made in 1957 by the now defunct Park Lane Films and had been thought to be lost. They were discovered by Robert Farrow when the former film studio’s office building was being cleared

Mr Farrow, who lives in Thorpe Bay, Southend on Sea said: “As the building manager it was my job to oversee that each floor of the property was properly cleared prior to refurbishment back in 1996. I spotted 21 film cans in a skip outside the office block and thought they would be good for storing my Super 8 collection in. I took them home, put them in a cupboard and pretty much forgot about them. During a recent clear out I found them again and decided to see what the tins contained – it was then I realised they were two Sellers films including the negatives, titles, show prints, outtakes and the master print. It was amazing. I knew I had something, but it wasn’t until I called Paul Cotgrove from The White Bus, who organises the Southend Film Festival, that it dawned on me that I’d found something very special indeed.”

“I received Robert’s phone call out of the blue” said Paul, adding: “He said he thought he had some Peter Sellers films and asked if I’d like to show them as part of next year’s Film Festival. Of course, I was interested straight away – but when I did some research I was gobsmacked to see that the two films are widely regarded by film historians as being ’lost’ Peter Sellers movies. Robert’s find is the Dead Sea Scrolls of the Film World.”

Neither Dearth of a Salesman nor Insomnia Is Good For You have been seen in public for over 50 years. Both are short, running for approximately thirty minutes each. Sellers filmed them not long before his first, major starring film role in The Naked Truth – he had already achieved household fame as one of The Goon Show cast on BBC Radio, but was still attempting to make his mark on the big screen. In both movies, Sellers assumes a number of roles, including doing the voiceover in Insomnia is Good

For You – as Paul adds “He almost appears to treat them as show reels to demonstrate to film producers his considerable talents. “

Mr Cotgrove now intends to have the films digitally restored and present them on the opening night of the Southend Film Festival, on 1 May 2014.

The films were co-written by celebrated Canadian screenwriter, author and essayist Mordecai Richler and Dearth of a Salesman is believed to feature Judith Wyler, daughter of the Academy Award-winning film director, William Wyler. However very little is known about either film or how they were made. Paul says “We are busy researching and trying to speak to people who might have been involved in their creation – we’d love anyone who has any information to get in touch with us.”

Dimitris Verionis from The Peter Sellers Appreciation Society says “We are very happy that these films – long considered lost – will be shown again in public. Their screening celebrates the wonderful comic talents of Peter Sellers who was – during the time they were shot- a very popular British radio star (The Goon Show), and right before he reached international stardom. I cannot wait to see them in all their digitally restored glory.”

Drop the Dead Donkey actor Neil Pearson is also a rare books collector and owns the only known remaining Insomnia script. In a recent interview he said: “No biographer of Sellers that I’ve spoken to has managed to find the film. The British Film Institute doesn’t have it. It looks as if it is comprehensively lost. The script is not very good but there were clearly other people in it. He wakes up with his wife – who played her? How come we don’t know this? I’m putting out an APB about it right now.”

Paul hopes that the two films will provide answers to Pearson’s questions – and those of countless film buffs across the globe.

Bat Fans Afflicted By Affleck

Not since the decision to cast Michael Keaton as Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film, have so many fan boys gone batty over the decision to cast Ben Affleck as the new Batman. History is repeating itself but this time on a much grander scale. In 1989 the internet was nowhere near its commercial use and fans penned letters to Warner Bros. voicing their disdain about Keaton. Now the focus has fallen on Ben Affleck, who very recently was announced as the new face of Batman to be seen in 2015’s yet untitled Man of Steel sequel. Opinion is fiercely divided and to the extent that 84,000 people have signed a petition against Warner Bros. and their decision to cast Affleck as the new Dark Knight.

Ben_Affleck to play batman

Some might be inclined to think that Affleck is coming in second best, based on the fact that Warner initially wanted Bale to reprise the role so much so that they offered him $50 million dollars. After the Dark Knight Rises concluded Chris Nolan’s trilogy, Bale officially stated that he was through playing Batman and true to his word, despite being offered one of the fattest pay checks in the history of film, he refused to return. Many names were subsequently thrown out there – Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin to name a few. But the biggest surprise has come with Affleck and if life has taught the human race anything, it is that history repeats itself. Keaton was initially canned and yet successful. The odds are thus in Affleck’s favour.

The biggest problem from the side of the Bat fanatics is that they seem to be weighing up the success of the franchise against one actor and this is not fair. The recent Dark Knight trilogy was immensely successful for a number of reasons and not just because Bale was so amazing.  The Dark Knight films worked because the right people all congregated under one roof and pooled their resources. This ultimately is the key to the success of any Hollywood endeavour – the right people. The recent success of Man of Steel has proven this too and it’s safe to assume that if the same creative team is behind the new film with the right script, actors, director and production values, then the Bat fans have nothing to fear by Affleck’s casting.

The general lucrative nature of the Batman franchise is sure to generate box office gold. The Batman name lends credibility as a solid franchise so much so that The Dark Knight Rises was recently made into an online slot game, with potential plans to make it into a mobile slots game too. At the end of the day, fans have little to fear by Affleck’s donning of the mask of Batman – he has the two essential qualities required for the role – the grit to be Batman and the charm to be Bruce Wayne. Plus, his recent string of films have all garnered critical and commercial success.

George Lucas Retires.

George Lucas is set to retire and has named Kathleen Kennedy as his successor.

Lucas will work with the Academy-award nominated producer during the transition. Lucas will then become co-chairman of the board of Lucasfilm and will continue as CEO.

“I’ve spent my life building Lucasfilm and as I shift my focus into other directions I wanted to make sure it was in the hands of someone equipped to carry my vision into the future,” said Lucas,

“It was important that my successor not only be someone with great creative passion and proven leadership abilities, but also someone who loves movies,” Lucas added. “I care deeply about my employees — it is their creativity and hard work that has made this company what it is today. As the company grows and expands I wanted to be sure the employees of Lucasfilm have a strong captain for the ship. I also care deeply about our fans and it was important to have someone who would carry on the passion and care that I’ve given the films over the years. So for me Kathy was the obvious choice, she is a trusted friend and one of the most respected producers and executives in the industry.”

Lucas friend and collaborator Steven Spielberg said, “George’s prescience is once again proven by his choice of my long time producing partner, Kathy Kennedy, to co-chair Lucasfilm. Kathy has been a member of both of our families going into a fourth decade so it does not feel like she is going to another galaxy far far away. She will get just as much support from me with Lucasfilm as George has given both of us all these years.”

“George is a true visionary,” said Kennedy. “I’ve seen him build Lucasfilm from a small rebel unit in Northern California to an international fully integrated entertainment company. I’m excited to have the chance to work with such an extraordinary group of talented people. George and I have talked about the enormous opportunities that lie ahead for the company, and as George moves towards retirement I am honored that he trusts me with taking care of the beloved film franchises. I feel fortunate to have George working with me for the next year or two as I take on this role–it is nice to have Yoda by your side.”

Hottest Cheerleaders, Jason Segel and Hayley Atwell {Film News}

This month in Total Film’s ‘All American’ issue…

Captain America’s Hayley Atwell: “I had a bullet shell fired off my head” – Plus red, white and blue pictures, exclusive to Total Film!

When Total Film met Captain America’s leading lady Hayley Atwell to discuss playing English freedom fighter Peggy Carter, she admitted there were some shaky moments during filming.

“I had a bullet shell fired off my head when I stepped too close to [Red Skull sidekick] Richard Armitage’s gun, which was a bit dumb,” she grimaces.

Atwell also reveals how she was put through her paces with a gruelling training regime.

“Various types of detox, hard running, endless lunges… I threw up after the first day!”

The hard work certainly paid off though and Atwell proudly confesses that she performs all her own stunts in the film.

“In fact when [the stuntwoman] comes on I’m like, ‘I’m really sorry, but can you go away, otherwise it feels like a waste, all this training just to look good in a uniform!”.

Captain America: The First Avenger opens on 29 July.

Jason Segel: “I like talking to strangers” – Forgetting Sarah Marshall star talks about staying grounded in Hollywood

Speaking to Total Film on set of his latest self-penned movie Five-Year Engagement, Jason Segel confesses that he likes talking to strangers at random LA bars.

“I’m definitely a watcher, yeah. I do like to observe people when they’re drinking because that’s when they’re at their most honest.”

Segel explains that he thinks it’s important as a writer to experience normal life, brushing off suggestion that he’s a bit of a heartthrob; the ‘thinking woman’s crumpet’.

“I guess some people like the goofy guy! I don’t think of myself like that,” he says bashfully. “I’ve tried hard not to let my life change, if that makes sense. I just bop around, doing the same stuff I usually do. I go to the pub a lot and am still friends with friends from high school. More than anything, it’s really important as a writer, because if you stop experiencing normal life you really feel it in the scripts”.
