Sisters at War by Milly Adams

Sisters at War is a wonderful, life-affirming story, every page filled with warmth and generosity for the characters.  It left me feeling uplifted and hopeful that the good in people will always shine through. It usually does, no matter what we may see or hear in the news.

It reminded me of all those lovely films I watched on a Sunday afternoon with my mum, dad and sisters –  an extended family, pulling together, making mistakes, righting wrongs and trying to be better people. I found it immensely moving and admired so very much the bravery of people in wartime – whether they were serving in the forces or doing their bit in Civvy Street. There are so many unsung heroes in any time of difficulty and the pages of Milly Adam’s latest book reveal the hardships and stoicism that challenged them.

Bryony and Hannah are sisters but they couldn’t be more different. Hannah is selfish and Bryony selfless.

Hannah is young and headstrong, no one will stop her from doing what she wants, and she wants to stay in Jersey. Bryony is happiest amongst her family and loved ones, and at Combe Lodge everyone is pitching in. The family home has filled with evacuees and Bryony has joined the ATA, helping to ferry planes across the country, whatever the risk.

When Jersey is occupied by the enemy, Bryony knows she needs to reach out to save her sister. But is she too late?

Hannah was infuriating, I could have wrung her neck at times. Bryony, sensible, brave and daring, a risk taker who sometimes makes the wrong decision. But you will love all of the characters because they are so finely drawn. I feel they are my neighbours, my friends – and I miss them.

Sisters at War is about the choices we make, how we can right the wrongs, learn from our mistakes and hopefully, try and redeem ourselves. Milly Adams shows us that it is never too late, and that forgiveness is a way forward. Her characters are not all goody, goodies – they are human; struggling to find love and hope, and make sense of a world turned upside down.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first Milly Adams novel and anyone who has read it will not be disappointed by this, her second. If you haven’t read Above us the Sky then lucky you; you’ve got it all to look forward to.

Edinburgh apartments named best hotel in the UK

A luxury serviced apartment complex in Edinburgh has been named the best hotel in the UK by the world’s largest online travel agency.

The Knight Residence apart-hotel near Edinburgh Castle is ranked at no. 9 and has the top spot in the UK in Expedia’s 2013 Insider Select list of 650 hotels around the world, drawn up after study of half a million independent guest reviews.

The list “recognises the very best hotels available in Expedia’s global marketplace,” the agency said. “These properties have been identified by customers as consistently delivering superior services, an exceptional guest experience and notable value.”
Only two other hotels in the UK – The Stafford in London and Longueville Manor in St Saviour in Jersey – are included in the leading 50. Others in the top 10 are located in Mexico, Costa Rica, Slovakia, France and India.
The Knight Residence, situated in Lauriston Street, has 28 one, two and three bedroom apartments and has consistently won awards for customer service. Last year it was voted Scotland’s best employer in the hospitality industry.
It is the seventh year in succession that it has featured in the Expedia Insider Select list.
“It’s a remarkable achievement to have been named the best hotel in the UK and a tribute to the consistently high standards we strive to achieve,” said Colin Stone, General Manager of The Knight Residence.
“One factor in our favour is that we offer more space and facilities than even top-of-the-range rooms in a conventional hotel. This is particularly attractive to business travellers and people with young families.”

He added: “Edinburgh itself remains one of the main tourist hotspots and business centres in Europe and we are lucky to have an enviable location right in the heart of the city.”

Seascape Beauty Review. Eco Friendly Beauty.

Seascape is a British brand. The ingredients come from local producers in Jersey in the Channel Islands. They smell amazing and are Eco-friendly. As Seascape say:

“All Seascape products are paraben, silicone, petroleum and SLS free and are suitable for vegetarians. They’re also free from artificial colours and synthetic fragrances”.

The carton is even produced by a carbon neutral company. It is completely guilt free beauty. I met Seascape at the Handpicked Media lounge at the Aldwych Hotel during London Fashion Week and I also got an amazing hand and arm massage from them.

There are six ranges, Uplift, Revive, Unwind, Soothe, Homme and Les Petits. I reviewed three of their products.

Peppermint Lip Balm
Has 100% natural peppermint essential oil. I love this lip balm. It is not too peppermint but soothes lips and stops them drying out. Works beautifully and leaves my lips looking luscious. Even in cold weather. You can see the ingredients below.

Refresh Hand & Nail Cream
This weather makes my hands dry out horribly. They get really dry and cracked. This hand and nail cream has lemongrass and Geranium. Like all of the products, it smells amazing and it saves my hands. A personal favourite.

Unwind Body Lotion.
This body lotion has Lavender to soothe and Ylang Ylang to ease tension. It is also enriched with Jersey Beeswax and Shea Butter. A little goes a long way and it is not too thick. You can get dressed quickly after using. I love how soft and moisturised it makes my skin.

I would definitely buy Seascape products. They are eco-friendly, well made and they really work.
