The sun is out, bank holidays are back, and we definitely have a spring in our step. So why not welcome the Spring season with the latest hair trend and go bold with layers.

This Spring, both hairstylists and the glitterati are loving layers and it’s perfect for this time of year as it removes some of the weight from your hair as the weather warms up. And for added plus, there’s a layered style to suit everyone. No matter your face shape, layers can help to create shape, give volume, movement and texture to any style.

Layers can create a dramatic change without the drama of a drastic haircut and if you want to recreate the layered looks of some of the most stunning celebs, then GET THE LOOK with Revlon’s NEW One-Step Volumiser Plus:

Short Layers – Kaia Gerber
This short layered look takes the weight out of the hair without losing the length and styling options. It’s also easy to maintain and allows you to add texture, bounce, volume and flow to suit your shape, suit your mood and to suit any occasion. You can look as effortlessly chic as Kaia Gerber whether you’re off to a wedding or just popping to the supermarket.

The Layered Lob – Olivia Munn
The lob is back! Previously popular as a sleek longer version of the bob, the look became a bit flat and went out of fashion. As you can see from Olivia Munn’s bouncy style, layering keeps the essence of the bob’s clear outline but throws in a whole new dimension. This gives you a new range of movement and versatility so you can style it out in so many different ways. It’s the perfect style if you love to change your look at the drop of a hat.

Face-Shaping Layers – Elizabeth Olson
If you’re looking for a softer look that shapes the face but maintains that long and flexible style you’ve come to know and love then add some layers at the front. Wispy and light facing-shaping layers are an excellent way to add shape and style to longer hair. Elizabeth Olsen shows you why this ‘90s throwback style is making a comeback!

INTRODUCING THE NEW REVLON ONE-STEP VOLUMISER PLUS

Working adults in their thirties are on track to be the wealthiest generation

Working adults in their thirties are on track to be the wealthiest generation – after research found they earn the highest salary, save more and have the most disposable income.

A study into how much money the average person ‘has’ in each decade of their life revealed those aged 30 to 39 earn an average of £32,561 a year, and typically save £309 a month.

They also have the most disposable income – an average of £382 a month – and have less debt than 50-somethings – £7,196 compared to £8,315.

The study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Equity Release Supermarket, also found that those in their thirties have an average of £10,326 stored away in savings.

Mark Gregory, founder and CEO of Equity Release Supermarket, said: “Our study revealed that while those in their thirties are impressively thrifty in their approach to money and savings, adults aged 40-49 who have had more time to save are slogging along with just £11,039.

“We know first-hand that many parents and grandparents would like to support their younger family members in their later life, whether that be with university fees, property, or other financial support.

“However, the research highlights that this may not be possible for several people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, which is where equity release could come into play as one potential solution.”

The study also found that regardless of how much is in the bank, the ability to be ‘good’ with money seems to improve with age.

Of those aged 60 and over, eight in 10 believe they are good at handling their money compared to 69 per cent of those in their twenties and 73 per cent of people in their thirties.

But 59 per cent of 20-somethings reckon they are good at saving, compared to 61 per cent of adults aged 60+.

The most common reasons people aged 60 and over believe they have good money habits simply comes from knowing how much is in their account (68 per cent) and knowing exactly where they spend their money (72 per cent).

It also emerged that when it comes to breaking down exactly what each age group splashes their cash on,  those in their twenties are most likely to spend their money on clothes, streaming services, takeaways and going out for dinner or drinks.

But adults aged 50 and over are more likely to be forking out for their energy bills, paying for petrol, the weekly food shop and insurance.

Despite having a healthy attitude towards finances, 53 per cent of those aged 60 and over still worry about money.

More than four in 10 put it down to the fact that they don’t want to get into debt, and a fifth agreed it’s because it’s one of the most stressful things in life.

Although a quarter worry about their income and outgoings because they enjoy living a comfortable lifestyle, and don’t want that to change.

But three in four adults aged 60+ believe they will always have some worries about money, no matter how much or little they actually have.

And 77 per cent admitted they find themselves fretting over how much they have pocketed for their retirement, according to the OnePoll findings.

Half of people aged 60 and above have money for the future put away in their pension and cash savings, while a fifth are relying on investments to keep them going in later life, and 14 per cent are considering downsizing.

Mark Gregory, from Equity Release Supermarket, added: “You spend your entire life building up savings – whether that’s in your pension, cash savings or investments like property – just so you can relax and enjoy your later life retirement years.

“But that doesn’t stop people worrying about money throughout this entire cycle.

“There are plenty of ways to give yourself that added bit of reassurance and equity release is just one option.

“Many people don’t understand the features and benefits of equity release as a possible solution to support retirement, enabling them to subsequently fulfil their financial wishes.

“When we’ve worked so hard to put money away, it’s always good to know there are other options available.

“While it’s not the only option to raise capital for an enhanced retirement, equity release could be beneficial and should always be considered with the right financial advice.”

New Research Shows The Benefits of Vitamin D Supplementation And Heart Health

As our summer lurches from cloud to cloud, this latest information from HSIs (The Health Supplements Information Service, an independent body) is interesting:

Taking a vitamin D supplement may improve heart function in people with chronic heart failure according to a paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and presented at the American College of Cardiology in Chicago on April 4.

Commenting on the trial, Dr Emma Derbyshire a public health nutritionist for the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS) noted: “This was a randomised double blind controlled trial in 223 people with chronic heart failure due to secondary left ventricular systolic dysfunction of the heart and also vitamin D deficiency.

“Trial participants were either allocated to one year of high dose vitamin D3 supplementation 4000 IU (100 micrograms daily) or a placebo. Measures made included the change in left ventricular function and the ability to do a test walk.

“Vitamin D supplementation restored normal levels of vitamin D in these people and left ventricular heart function was also better in the vitamin D supplemented group than placebo. There were no changes on the walking test with vitamin D.

“These findings are very encouraging as chronic heart failure is increasing and treatments can be expensive. Many people in the UK have very low levels of vitamin D. In fact average vitamin D intakes in the UK are between 2.3 and 5.1 micrograms daily which is not enough to protect against deficiency.
“A previous modelling exercise found that more than 8 micrograms would be needed daily to ensure a normal vitamin D status in most peopleIn addition, while the best source of vitamin D is sunlight, the Northerly latitude of the UK means that we lack the right form of sunlight for more than half of the year”.
The Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS) (www.hsis.org.uk; Tel: 020 7052 8955) is an independent information body, set up to provide balanced information on vitamins and minerals. It is supported by a restricted educational grant from the Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB).

Meningitis By Dr Patricia Thompson

A new vaccine, for Meningococcus B, will soon be available for babies. What, another vaccine? Do we really need it?

I would say – absolutely yes.

Meningococcus causes meningitis, and blood infection (septicaemia) – sometimes leading to limb amputation or brain damage. Approximately 1:10 people affected die.

As a paediatrician, I’ve seen healthy children become seriously ill within hours. Most recover, but, inexplicably, some don’t, and I’ve had to tell shocked parents that their child may not make it through the night.

Meningitis is an infection of the meninges – the thin protective layer covering the brain and spinal cord. It can affect any age, but predominantly under fives, and, particularly, under ones. Teenagers/young adults are also susceptible.

In the UK, it’s usually caused by a virus –and recover is generally complete. However bacterial meningitis is far more dangerous – and the Meningococcus bacteria, of which there are several strains, is the main culprit. It normally lives harmlessly in the nose and throat, but sometimes invades the blood, causing the illness.

The UK vaccination programme already protects against some meningitis types – the bacteria – Haemophilus, Pneumococcus, Meningococcus strain C, and the viruses – Measles and Mumps.

A new vaccine against Meningococcus A, C, W and Y will soon be offered to young adults, plus the new B vaccine for infants.

Meningococcal vaccines are between 85 -100% effective initially – much less so in young children. They are usually safe but can cause pain/redness, vomiting, headaches, drowsiness or irritability. Occasionally, allergic reactions, or, rarely, neurological problems may occur. Protection wanes over time, so teenagers are given boosters. However, vaccination reduces the number of people carrying the bacteria, thus reducing infection risk for the whole community.

If you think someone may have meningitis, look out for:

Headache, stiff neck, photophobia (dislike of bright light), vomiting, drowsiness or confusion and fever. The typical rash (called petechial) is red but doesn’t fade when pressed. It isn’t always present, but if you see it, you must seek medical help urgently.

symptonsof Meningitis By Dr Patricia Thompson

Sometimes, particularly youngsters, are so ill, that the classic signs aren’t obvious. The child may have a temperature, but, equally, may seem cold. They make look blue, cry incessantly (often high-pitched), refuse feeds, have convulsions or become unconscious. In young babies, their fontanelle (‘soft spot’) may bulge and feel tense.

It is important to treat rapidly. Antibiotics will kill the bacteria, but, if severe, intensive care may be necessary.

To give some perspective – approximately 3000 people will get bacterial meningitis/septicaemia in the UK this year. The incidence has decreased due to vaccination.

Knowing the signs could save a life. Always have a low index of suspicion – an unnecessary visit to A&E is far better than delayed treatment. I myself rushed my young son there, late one night. Embarrassingly, he made a miraculous recovery a soon as the doctor (my colleague) examined him – I did eventually live it down at work.

New Labour Leader Will Be Chosen in September, Reports Confirm

Labour, politics, leader, election, 2015Following one of the most controversial and tense General Elections of the 21st century, leader of the Conservative Party David Cameron finds himself at Number 10 once again after securing a total of 331 seats across the nation.

For Cameron, it was the “sweetest victory” but Friday 8th May had a far more sombre outcome for a whole host of MPs. After losing 49 seats, leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg made the heart-breaking decision to resign from the party after five years as Deputy Prime Minister.

Leader of the divisive UK Independence Party Nigel Farage lost his seat in his local constituency Thanet South, causing him to tell press he would be “taking summer off” – only for his resignation to later be revoked by the party.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon’s campaign served to highlight the flaws in the first past the post system, having gained 56 out of 59 seats but fewer votes than UKIP’s 3 million. Commentators remarked upon how 4.29 million voters are represented by 59 seats in Scotland, whereas 3 million UKIP votes were gained by just two MPs.

However, with all the drama that unfolded on election result day, without a doubt one of the biggest stories has to be the resignation of Labour leader Ed Miliband, who told followers in an emotional speech that he would “never give up” fighting for the nation. Having fought tirelessly as the main opposition to David Cameron, it came as a huge surprise and caused a social media uproar when Labour achieved just 232 seats.

Now, one week into the Conservatives’ new term, social media is already awash with speculation as to who will take over from Ed Miliband’s five-year leadership. Previously, political experts at Bookies.com had their eyes upon Chuka Umunna, Andy Burnham and Yvette Cooper to step up to the plate.

Now, sources have confirmed that the new Labour leader will be announced on September 12th, and it seems that Umunna is keen to press on with his campaign. The 36-year-old is a Member of Parliament for Streatham and has also held the position of Shadow Business Secretary since 2011. At nine years Miliband’s junior, with a little more than a decade’s experience in politics, Umunna will doubtless draw some cynicism compared to a man who has been a member of the Labour Party since the age of 17.

However, he has assured voters that he can turn Labour around, but warns that it will be a “five-year plan.” Speaking from Swindon for his Facebook page, Umunna said: “Some have in recent days now suggested it is a 10-year project to get the party back into power. I don’t think we should have any truck with that. I think Labour can do it in five years.

“I want to lead that effort as part of a really big Labour team getting Labour back into office, and building a fairer and more equal society. That is why we joined the Labour party in the first place.”
