Susan Boyle- The Emperor's got Talent.

I was right about The Darkness. Sorry, but while you were all hailing them as the new ‘Queen’ I was shaking my head and thinking, ‘That lad’s a ‘top C’ and a bag of chips away from disaster.’
I still feel I’m right about button flies. I stand there by the exit of public toilets, fiddling with myself and thinking, ‘This is how they came up with ‘The Cube’!’

I was wrong about Uggs- fair enough. I was wrong about Mark Wright- seems like a decent lad, he can live. I’m happy to be corrected.

So can somebody, please, tell me why Susan Boyle is worth millions?

I saw her this morning on the day-before-yesterdays ’This morning’, which I’m sure qualifies me for my own Tardis, and all I could think was what I always think when I hear her sing: “It’s just a woman, singing!”

As I write, my wife is treading the boards in a West-End musical. Many of our friends are from the same industry. Trained, talented people. My wife can sing. She’s a very good singer- a professional, as it were. She’s not worth millions.

Susan Boyle can sing, of course she can. She’s got quite a nice voice, but take the echo off her microphone and she’s just a woman who can sing, and there are thousands of those.

Everyone, even now, goes back to that moment on BGT when she came out onto the stage looking, it has to be said, slightly bovine and did what has, in my opinion, made her fortune. She sang ‘better than expected’. In other words, she sings better then she looks like she can sing. If she’d looked like Celine Dion she’d have got a raised eyebrow from Simon and a, ‘yes, but would the Queen like it?’ from Piers.

She waddled out before the judges, all flock wall paper and facial hair, and started gyrating her hips and speaking in tongues. Everyone thought she was going to be guided gently back off by someone in a smock and marigolds muttering, “Honestly Susan, I turn my back for five minutes…” But instead she nodded to the magic hand on the sound system that, thankfully for her, could still play C90 cassette tapes, and let rip.

It was impressive. Anton- the taller half of the conjoined presentation unit ‘Anton Dec’, turned to the camera, “You didn’t expect that, Didga!” I shook my head- I hadn’t. But then, I didn’t expect Diversity to be as good as they were. I didn’t expect that guy who swallows snooker balls and goldfish to be able to regurgitate Amanda Holden’s ring after unlocking it with his over-worked duodenum, but he did, and he’s not worth millions either.

Nine days later she’s an internet sensation and tipped to win the whole thing. She’s mentioned on Oprah and has been credited with reinventing music altogether and fathering/mothering Jesus, so I thought I ought to Google her performances since that moment on BGT and see what all the fuss is about.

Well, apart from that two minutes and twenty seconds of audition, and a CD version of ‘cry me a River’ from TEN YEARS previously. There was nothing… that would be ‘nothing at all’, the kind of thing that you’re left with if you take something from something- that nothing.

That CD of ‘Cry Me A River’ by the way, was dug up after her appearance on BGT. ‘Hello’ claimed it “cemented her status” as a singing star and no less a journal than the New York Times saw it as proof that she wasn’t just a ‘one trick pony.’ But, surely, even a pony with two tricks is no ‘Mr. Ed’.

Years pass and I’m left fiddling with my flies while I queue outside the Ugg shop for a £200 pair of lazily-crafted slippers, expecting the moment of revelation to come. Waiting for that enlightenment where I suddenly hear what everyone else can hear, but I can’t. All I can hear is a woman singing. All I can see is a woman who can sing better than her appearance would have you expect.

Susan, like Cher and Madonna, is now known by only one name but, unlike them and more like Jedward, it’s not her actual name but an abbreviated amalgamation: ‘SUBO’. Thankfully her second name isn’t Bale or it would be ‘SUBA’ which is ‘A BUS’ backwards and her PR people will want her as far from associations with the back of a bus as possible.

The worry is that, as her image is cultivated and her appearance improves, that ‘juxtaposition’ [wikipedia’s word- not mine] is lessened. As her fame and income increase she will, inevitably, end up looking more like Beyoncé Knowles and less like Nick Knowles and somebody, somewhere will finally look at her and think, ‘Hang on, it’s just a woman, singing.’

From what I’ve seen of her, Susan Boyle is a lovely lady. She seems to have a good sense of humour, a degree of humility and a half decent singing voice. I have nothing against her at all and wish her all the best. I just don’t understand, now the surprise has worn off, what all the fuss is about.

Maybe I’m wrong- maybe, thankfully, she’s not ‘in the altogether’ after all and her voice really is millions of pounds better than all the other women who can sing but, like the emperor’s new outfit, I just can’t see it.

Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul Spend Night In Haunted Hotel

The ‘X Factor’ judges checked into The Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa in Dallas but they had no idea about its reputation and while fellow judge L.A. Reid checked out almost as soon as he arrived, Simon and Paula stuck it out a little longer.

A source told Us Weekly magazine: “L.A. didn’t even know the story of the ghosts; he just couldn’t be inside the hotel. He was first to check in and left before the others arrived, saying it had a ‘weird feeling about it.’ Everyone joked he was being a diva, but when they heard about the hotel really being haunted they just thought he was smart!”

While Paula – who reportedly experienced her bathroom’s taps being turned on and off on their own – was left scared by the experience, sources say Simon enjoyed the spooky goings on.

The source added: “All the other judges were freaked out and insisted on changing hotels or rooms, but Simon was quite happy with the ghosts. He was fascinated by them. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if he insists on staying in only haunted hotels in future!”

Cheryl Cole Told: 'Lose Two Stone' For X Factor.

In the ongoing saga of Cheryl Cole’s firing from the US X Factor, it emerged yesterday that she was told by an unnamed executive at Fox network to lose up to two stone before her debut. The 27-year-old singer quickly enlisted Gwyneth Paltrow’s personal trainer, Tracey Anderson, to get back into shape after a battle with malaria left her with a curvier figure, but found herself out of time, out of favour and heading back to the UK.

To soften the blow of her failed trip, a return to the UK’s show was offered to the troubled star as an olive branch. But it has now been announced that she will not return to the UK X Factor after she became ‘uncontactable’.

X Factor judge, Amanda Holden, said that Cheryl will regret it if she doesn’t return. She told Radio 2: ‘There is dark talk of Cheryl snubbing a return to British X Factor. Please do not do this. You will regret it for a long time.”

The 23rd annual Sunday Times Rich List – the definitive guide to wealth in Britain and Ireland – is published in a special 104-page supplement, which profiles the 1,000 richest people and families in the UK and the 250 richest across Ireland. The list is based on identifiable wealth (land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies), and excludes bank accounts (to which the paper has no access).

The Sunday Times Rich List 2011 is compiled by Philip Beresford, the leading authority on British wealth, and edited by Ian Coxon. Ireland’s richest 250 is compiled by Colm Murphy.

Save the Children Launch ‘No Child Born to Die’

David Beckham mentioned Save the Children’s No Child Born to Die on his Facebook page, reaching over seven million people. Piers Morgan and Stephen Fry, Alexandra Burke and Emma Freud twittered about it. Simon Cowell has backed the campaign, so has Helena Bonham Carter. The UK’s biggest names in show business, sport and journalism lined up to back Save the Children’s new campaign today – No Child Born to Die – which aims to save millions of children’s lives.

At the launch event for Save the Children’s No Child Born to Die campaign this morning:

* Alexandra Burke revealed she was “Born to Believe” and told how she was so moved by her trip to Haiti with Save the Children in 2010, that: “It was really heartbreaking…it opened my eyes up to many things..seeing what was going in Haiti and how it can be stopped…even if you put in £1 or £10 , it can make a difference. ”

* Edith Bowman – whose passionate belief in the cause was sparked by speaking to mums and children in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo , told Save the Children she was “Born to Talk…but about serious issues.” She said: “It just seems a ridiculous the number of children to be losing their lives in this day and age.”

* Amanda Mealing – who was “Born to Perform” told the launch event in central London about a newborn baby in Bangladesh who had died of septicaemia because its umbilical cord had been cut with “a sharpened bamboo stick”. She added: “I know that if I forego my one takeaway coffee a day, and (donate the money), it can make a real difference.”

* Natasha Kaplinsky who visited the Delhi slums with Save the Children earlier this month to see our life-saving work said she was “Born to Love, Learn and eat Fudge”.

Quotes from other celebrities backing Save the Children’s campaign:

* Piers Morgan announced he was ‘Born to Irritate’
* Actress Brenda Blethyn was ‘Born to Sing’ but reveals she’s never got round it.
* England footballer, Frank Lampard, is ‘Born to Play Ball’.
* Hugh Dennis is ‘Born to see Life from a Funny Angle’
* TV Presenter Dr Hilary is ‘Born to tell bad medical jokes’
* TV presenter Sarah Beeney was ‘Born to Laugh’
* Spooks star Hermione Norris confesses to being ‘Born to eat sweets’.

* Dr Abhay Bang, whose pioneering community-based methods reduced child mortality by an astonishing three quarters in 39 villages in India told the launch that empowering village women was one of the keys to success: “If you open a window of knowledge, the skills are in her hands, the knowledge is in her head, the equipment is on her shoulder, and the compassion is in her heart, she literally becomes a mobile health clinic.”

* Justin Forsyth, Chief Executive of Save the Children, said at the launch event in central London :“It is shocking in this day and age that 4000 children a day are dying of something as simple as diarrhoea or pneumonia: what a senseless waste of young lives.” He added: “We know what works, the tragedy is that just when we are beginning to make progress we risk slowing down. Our rallying cry is No Child Born to Die. We can end this massive loss of life. That is why we need every family, up and down the country to get involved…In five year’s time, we want to look back on 2011 as a turning point in the battle against child deaths.”

The X Factor: The aftermath.

The X Factor proved as tense as ever on Sunday, The two acts who received the fewest votes and had to sing for survival were Katie Waissel and Treyc Cohen.

All ten acts opened the show with a performance of So What by Pink.

Shayne Ward (winner of The X Factor 2005) took to the stage to perform his new single, Gotta Be Somebody and Kylie Minogue performed Better Than Today.

The two acts with the lowest public vote and singing for survival this week were Treyc Cohen and Katie Waissel. When asked how she felt, Katie said: “I’m nervous and it’s Treyc…we’re all in this together I’m going to sing from my heart.” Treyc added: “I’ve been here before but I’m here to sing and I’m just going to do the best that I can.”

Katie sang Please Don’t Give Up On Me whilst Treyc sang Unbreak My Heart (Toni Braxton).

Simon: ‘Here’s the dilemma – Treyc you are the better singer, Katie you are the more interesting performer. I’m going to base this on as a viewer who I’d like to see next week. The person Im going to send home is Treyc.’

Cheryl: ‘I just want to say to both of you, you’re both very talented women. Thank you for being so gracious and strong up there. But Im refusing point blank to send anyone home.’

Dannii: ‘Firstly if I could just say these girls are brilliant singers and I know Ive given a lot of comments but I hope they’ve been constructive and there’s no cause to boo anyone on this stage. You both sing better under pressure, The person Im sending home tonight is Katie.’

Louis: ‘I’ve got to know both girls really well and I love both of them..its so, so difficult. I don’t know whether to go with my head or my heart. My head says save Treyc my heart says, save Katie. It’s really, really difficult, Simon. I’m going to go with my heart, I’m sending home Treyc.’

Treyc said: ‘I’ve had the best time I’ve met some great people. I’ve made some good lifelong friends. I’m so, so grateful. I want to thank everyone from the researchers to the people in the canteen. Thank you.’

This meant Treyc Cohen became the seventh act to leave The X Factor.

On The Xtra Factor, ITV2, Katie commented: “Treyc should be here. I just really want to be here, in this competition. I really thought I was going home. Its not my time. I want to continue I want to show everyone that I am me.”

Dannii Minogue was wearing Dolce & Gabanna dress, Cheryl Cole wore a BodyAmr.

Performing next week on The X Factor – Westlife, JLS and Take That.

X Factor and BGT here at least until 2013 {TV}

ITV has signed a new, three-year deal with The X Factor & Britain’s Got Talent, keeping Simon Cowell in work for at least another 3 years.

As part of this renewed collaboration with Syco Entertainment and FremantleMedia, the broadcaster has also secured exclusive UK broadcast rights to the American version of The X Factor and America’s Got Talent for ITV2.

Simon Cowell said: “I am thrilled this deal has been concluded with ITV to enable our relationship to continue to develop. I am committed to making sure both shows get bigger and better every year. I have a lot to thank ITV for; they have been key in making The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent the UK’s biggest television shows.”

The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent are the UK’s most popular entertainment television programmes on any channel.  The two shows provided the most watched television moments of 2009 with peak audiences of 19.3 million for The X Factor final and 19.9 million for the Britain’s Got Talent Final.
This year’s seventh series of The X Factor has been the most popular ever with viewing figures across every stage reaching record levels. Almost 17 million watched the second Judges’ houses show, and yesterday’s second live results show peaked at an enormous 15.2 million; the highest ever at this stage of the competition.
Online, ITV.com/TheXFactor attracted over 95 million page views during the 2009 series with over 30 million video views across the run.
