US Independence Day – Should investors buy into the American Dream?

·         US valuations are at their long term average

·         US economy accounts for 19% of World GDP

·         HL analysis shows only 3 out of 77 large cap US funds beat their benchmark

Adrian Lowcock, Senior Investment Manager of Hargreaves Lansdown, looks at the prospects for the US economy on the eve of Independence Day;

“The US economy is much further down the road to recovery than the UK and Europe.  The banking system has been fixed and the country does not have the problems that still exist in Europe. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel in the US and sustainable growth may be achievable.

“Many US companies benefit from strong management teams, are profitable businesses and operate in an environment of improving growth.  Many American companies have a consistent and long term track record of being able to grow profits. In the world of uncertainty a premium is being attached to those businesses that can continue to grow.

“Whilst overall the US stockmarket is not cheap, there are still areas which offer value and investors get access to companies with huge growth potential.  The US has a long history of encouraging entrepreneurs to develop and grow business.  The US has a large smaller companies sector which is full of businesses looking to grow into global leaders. Investors should make sure they have some investment in the US Market within their portfolio.”

US Economy

The US Economy accounts for 19% or nearly 1/5th of the world’s gross domestic product.  Economic outlook in the US is improving with GDP growth forecast by the IMF at 1.9% for 2013 and 3% in 2014.  The threat of a “fiscal cliff” was largely delayed; bank lending conditions have improved from low levels.

Household debt as proportion of disposable income has fallen back to 2004 levels. House prices started to rise in 2012 and investment in residential property has followed.

Unemployment is falling with major banks* predicting the unemployment rate will be around 7% by the end of 2013.

Rising house prices should help rebuild household finances, as will improving employment, providing support to personal consumption.  Low borrowing rates should be supportive of increased spending, while businesses encouraged by the improving financial conditions and healthy profits may well increase investment.

Shale gas could be transformative for the US economy.  According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration it will keep market gas prices low at around $4 per million Btu until 2019 with prices rising slowly thereafter. This could rejuvenate the industrial sector.

Risks to US Recovery

The biggest risk is the early withdrawal of the Quantitative Easing programme.  As the economic data, such as unemployment falling below 7%, improves it puts pressure for the Federal Reserve to roll back on further QE. The US has not addressed its budget deficit and the US lacks a plan to reduce the debt. As such there are risks of further political entanglements over raising the debt ceiling, both of which result in a higher sovereign risk premium.

Investing in the US

The US stock market has performed well in recent years recovering from the financial crisis having returned 103% since March 2009 compared to the FTSE 100 and the FTSE Europe Ex UK returning 80% and 62% respectively. The US stock market is around its long term average valuation with a P/E at 21.98 compared to its long term average of 23.8 times earnings. Even so there are areas of the US Market that remain attractive.

The challenge for investors is how to access the US market. Analysis by Hargreaves Lansdown shows that large cap active managers continue to struggle in the region with only 3 out of 77 funds in the IMA North American sector out-performing the S&P 500 over 3 years and 6 out 68 able to do so over a 5 five year period.

Investors looking for large cap exposure should consider US tracker funds, , such as HBSC American Index or I-Shares S&P 500, to give access to the world’s largest stock market whilst keeping fees low. For those wishing to access US smaller companies our preferred fund is Legg Mason US Smaller Companies.

4.        Allow to set in the fridge for 6-8 hours.

6.       Allow to cool in the fridge for 10 mins.

7.       Serve when requires.

Alternatively serve as a frozen sweet.

 STRAWBERRY JEWEL

What are the ‘red sprinkles’ made of (this is probably covered in the video or a stupid question)? They are the type of sprinkles you would put on ice cream

Any comment on type of cream? It would be double cream

Is “50ml” ‘one’ serving as jt were? Yes

STRAWBERRY KISS

Is there a particular technique or skill to the ‘garnishing’? You could wet the rim with Tequila Rose then dip the glass into the sprinkles

I have put the step in as garnish before pouring – did you film this one?  Is this how you did it?

Is “50ml” ‘one’ serving as jt were? Yes

STRAWBERRY SPLIT

In what order should they be layered?  This is important to the steps – and again they would need to match the video? The order to match the image

Is “50ml” ‘one’ serving as jt were? Yes

TR YOGURT DESSERT

What is the garnish in the picture?  Will add this as a recommended 6th step for completeness… Lime zest

Why do our sugary cravings always strike at 4pm?

clip_image002It’s 4pm, you’ve got an inbox that’s bursting at the seams, a to-do list longer than your morning commute, but all you want to do is devour an entire packet of biscuits in an effort to stay awake.

Overwhelming food cravings are the culprit behind most broken diets. But why does this sweet treat urge always seem to hit us at around 4pm? And what can we do to curb these calorific cravings? We enlist the help of independent nutritional expert and dietician Naomi Beinart to help explain this 4pm food phenomenon and offer us some healthy snack solutions.

When we are tired, we tend to make poorer food choices, wanting a quick sweet fix to perk us up. This can occur most often in the afternoon when cortisol levels can take a natural dip (cortisol is a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands that fluctuates throughout the day) and when this dip occurs, we may feel more tired as cortisol normally gives us a feeling of energy.

Sweet Fix

Naomi explains ‘When you’re in your 20’s, it’s very easy to snack on sweet things without putting on weight, and still having enough energy to get through the day and go out all night. Fast forward to your 30’s and 40’s and sweet snacking can cause a host of problems from premature ageing, a decrease in energy levels, hormonal imbalances and mood problems.’’

Thankfully all of these health concerns can be helped by eating the right foods at the right time, ‘eating well will help balance out blood sugar, reduce sweet cravings, increase energy levels and help make skin look better,’ says Naomi.

Blood sugar rollercoaster

Fluctuating glucose levels can be harmful for our health. The rollercoaster of glycemic highs and lows is not good for our general health. If over time, you become insulin resistant, where more and more insulin is being produced by the pancreas, but the insulin receptors in your cells do not respond effectively to it, then this can increase your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Want to get off the ride?

Try taking a natural nutritional supplement that can help to balance out your blood sugar levels. Diabain has 2 such products that do just that. Diabain’s Inusol is a herbal remedy made from a scientific blend of 8 natural nutrients and minerals that can help to control blood sugar levels and is free from any harmful chemicals. Similarly Diabain’s Vittol is a multi-vitamin and mineral formula with a blend of 26 essential elements, ensuring you have the fundamental nutrirnets to help keep you healthy. Vittol has been scientifically formulated to help lower blood sugar levels & glycemic response in both type-2 diabetics and those diagnosed as having a pre-diabetic condition. Inusol and Vittol are £9.99 from www.diabain.com.

Naomi’s diet Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t be restricted by your circumstances. Travel, eating out and dieting can all restrict our food choices. Overcome these by always having a healthy snack with you, such as a banana, almonds or oatcakes with guacamole or hummus.

Supplements can be helpful in controlling sugar cravings and energy dips. Choose one with key blood sugar regulating properties such as Fenugreek extract, Cinnamon bark and Gymnema Sylvestre extract.

Avoid sushi, as the white rice can be bad news for your blood sugar levels, instead go for sashimi or grilled chicken and vegetables.

Eat every 3 hours. When you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises in response to the food. The higher and quicker it rises, the more

insulin has to be produced by your pancreas. The higher your blood sugar goes up, the lower it crashes down afterwards. This crash will also occur if you leave longer than three hours between eating. At the drop, your body will send you off for a quick fix, like a bar of chocolate or a cup of tea and biscuit, because it need to lift the blood sugar up again.

Frankie and Benny’s 2 Courses For £10.95 Review

photo1

We went to Frankie and Benny’s in the Rotunda in Kingston last Wednesday after we saw the excellent new Star Trek film  review here. Frankie and Benny’s is a fun, affordable Italian American style restaurant. it has an excellent atmosphere. The decor is good and I like the old black and white photographs of Frankie and Benny up on the walls. We sit in a stylish booth with a comfy banquette on each side. The service staff were friendly and attentive.  We take advantage of the two course for £10.95 deal available all day on every day except Saturday.

To start with we have a blue cheese mushroom crostini. Button mushrooms tossed in a rich blue cream sauce and served over toasted ciabatta. Rich and creamy.

photo5

We also have the crab bruschetta. Tomato, red onion, crab, basil and pepper again over toasted ciabatta. You can’t go wrong with a good Bruschetta.

photo3

For our mains we have the Philly cheese steak sandwich. Steak sautéed with red pepper, red onion and sliced mushrooms. Piled high in a toasted ciabatta bun with philly cheese sauce. As you can see it was pretty decadent. Frankie and Benny’s always gives you excellent portion sizes.

We also try the veggie Gnocchi bake. Gnocchi tossed tomato sauce, red onion and green chilli, topped with mozzarella cheese. Very tasty and lots of chilli.

At two courses for £10.95 you can argue about the price. A great place to feed the whole family.
