Nelson Mandela Dies Aged 95: His Greatest Quotes

Nelson Mandela, quote, quotes, death

Nelson Mandela was an eloquent, humble man who led South Africa from apartheid to democracy. An inspirational figure who fought for democracy, human rights and peace, here Frost pays tribute to him with his greatest quotes. Rest In Peace Mandela.

“One day I will be the first black president of South Africa.” In 1952

“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.”

“I can’t help it if the ladies take note of me; I am not going to protest.”

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”

“Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.”

“Only free men can negotiate; prisoners cannot enter into contracts.”

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.” On oppression in South Africa.

“I cannot and will not give any undertaking at a time when I, and you, the people, are not free. Your freedom and mine cannot be separated.”

“Those who conduct themselves with morality, integrity and consistency need not fear the forces of inhumanity and cruelty.”

“In South Africa, to be poor and black was normal, to be poor and white was a tragedy.”

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. I felt fear myself more times than I can remember, but I hid it behind a mask of boldness. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”

“I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.”

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

“I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself.”

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires.”
– 21 September 1953. Presidential address to ANC conference.

“I have never regarded any man as my superior, either in my life outside or inside prison.”

“If I had my time over I would do the same again. So would any man who dares call himself a man.”

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

“The struggle is my life. I will continue fighting for freedom until the end of my days.”

“Man’s goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.”

“Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end.” In a letter to his wife, Winnie Mandela.

“It would be very egotistical of me to say how I would like to be remembered. I’d leave that entirely to South Africans. I would just like a simple stone on which is written ‘Mandela’.”

“Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.”

“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”

“Between the anvil of united mass action and the hammer of the armed struggle we shall crush apartheid and white minority racist rule.”

“It always seems impossible until its done.”

“There will be life after Mandela. On my last day I want to know that those who remain behind will say: ‘The man who lies here has done his duty for his country and his people.'”

Atomic Floyd AirJax In Ear Acoustics Review

Atomic-Floyd-Airjax-reviewAirJax are made especially for iPhone, iPad and iPod. They can also be used on non-Apple products Skype and Blackberry. They offer amazing audio quality and style. Unbelievable style, they are the Naomi Campbell of in-ear acoustics. Just beautiful.

Just to up the style quote they come with a black leather case which is red suede inside and opens when you apply pressure. They are ‘hand-crafted in metal’, this metal includes acoustic steel, an ultra thin metal, titanium and 24k gold. They are high quality as you would expect, well made and just sigh-worthy.

They come with a microphone and have a button for answering calls. The earphones have removable metal hooks which turns them into fitness earphones, very handy and you do not even notice them as they are so comfortable. The earhooks also come with black sleeves, a flight adapter and mini jack.

Now to the audio: it is just perfect. Everything works in harmony and every genre of music sounds magnificent. The rich, creamy bass is first class. These gorgeous and pretty much perfect earphones, their only negative for some people is that they are not compatible on a PC or ordinary MP3 player, are a must if you have the extra cash for beautiful, high-quality earphones with impeccable sound. Amazing.

Good Reasons For Bad Things By Angus Kennedy

Good reasons for bad things Angus KennedyThis is Angus Kennedy’s second book. His first, The Kitchen Baby, is reviewed here. His second book is different from his first as it is a book of 222 maxims that came to Angus in the early morning, or as he says, channeled through him, don’t let that put you off if you don’t believe in it. I love maxims myself, the right maxim at the right moment can propel you through the day or help with a tough situation.

I also love the line; ‘I survive like many of us do, within a self-manufactured life of complete chaos.’ A brilliant line that is relevant to all. Now, on to the maxims; there is 222 maxims that came to Angus at 2:22am every night for two weeks. The maxims are great and you will, of course, have a favourite. Here are a few:

The real winner is the one that doesn’t create losers

Judge other people and the sentence will invariably fall upon yourself

Strength is needed to fight; true strength is needed to stop

I thought this was a great book, I believe Angus when he said the maxims were channeled through him but I don’t believe in channeling myself. Which may sound like a contradiction but I also have faith without religion so there you go.

Angus is also doing a special chocolate and book deal with this book which is out on January 2014. Definitely get your hands on one of those!

Mini Eco: A Craft Book By Kate Lilley Review

Crafting has become huge in recent years, accumulating in a billion pound industry. The recession has only added to the craft industry, people want to be creative and want nice things without paying over the odds. Which is one of the reasons, other than her tremendous talent, that Kate Lilley’s craft blog www.minieco.co.uk has over 250,000 followers and is now a cult phenomenon in the craft industry.

Mini Eco craft book

MiniEco: A Craft Book has a selection of 31 craft projects. Kate’s crafting style is Japanese-influenced – lots of paper crafts and a clean, minimal aesthetic. The book has amazing photography and production effects. I love the cleanness of her designs; minimalism at it’s most beautiful.

miniecocraftbook

The 31 how-to projects are very clearly laid-out. This book makes crafting easy, even when the project looks hard. Craft projects include Hama bead candle holder, furoshiki cloths, and macrame samplers, as well as Kate’s infamous paper crafts – paper gems, crackers, banners and an incredible origami lampshade.

I love this craft book for a number of reasons; the craft projects are beautiful and original, the step-by-step guide makes it all very easy, and there is hours of fun to be had. Mini Eco would make a great Christmas present for the crafter in your life.

Taittinger Champagne | Weddings

At Frost we have been reviewing Taittinger champagne for you. I know, it is a hard job. We reviewed three different bottles.

taittinger, champagne,

Taittinger Nocturne Sec NV, RRP £47, John Lewis, Harrods, winedirect.com

The Taittinger Nocturne Sec NV is a pale yellow champagne with delicate bubbles. It has overtones of yellow peaches and dried apricot. A wonderful, classy champagne which is rich and smooth. The wine is aged for at least four years and is the perfect champagne for desserts and wedding toasts. I could drink this everyday.

Tattinger Brut Réserve NV, RRP £38.99,

A delicious and light champagne. The Taittinger Brut Reserve NV is renowned for it’s golden yellow colour. The nose is light and delicate with hints of fruits and brioche. The wine has depth as it is aged for 3-4 years. Perfect with white meat, fish, shellfish and canapes. Also perfect as an aperitif.

Taittinger Prélude Grands Crus NV, RRP £49, Majestic, Oxford Wine Company, Fortnum & Mason

A brilliant, pale yellow with silvery highlights which is reflective of the high proportions of chardonnay. Subtle and fresh with floral scents and hints of elderflower and spicy cinnamon overtones. The flavour is dominated by intense fresh citrus fruit. This wine comes from the top Grand Cru sites and is made from the first pressing. It is aged for 4-5 years, sometimes more. A real treat, wonderful.

Perfect if you want to really treat your guests. Goes with grilled & roasted white meat. fish/shellfish and as an award-winning aperitif.

Taittinger’s is one of the champagne brands that everyone trusts, and what is better for your wedding than not having to worry about what people are drinking? They will enjoy one of these bottle, we certainly did.

I can’t tell you which one was our favourite as we all chose different champagne and each one has it’s perfect situation, but Frost Loves Taittinger.

Diciannove Restaurant Review

The life of a restaurant reviewer has its ups and downs. Some restaurants are merely okay and then some restaurants just blow you away, which is what Diciannove did. A new Italian restaurant in the city. Situated in Crown Plaza and with a great ambiance, this restaurant has wonderful little decor highlights, with some nods to Fleet Street (it is just up the road) in the artwork and a great bar. The banquet we sit at was comfortable and the table was huge. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. There is also another section of the restaurant situated to the left which is closed off for privacy.

The new restaurant concept has been around for about four months. Great pains have been taken to ensure that everything is authentically Italian. All the ingredients are from Italy even the water is imported and it all shows. Even all the staff were Italian except for our enthusiastic waiter Kevin who was excellent throughout our meal.

Scallops

photo 3 (7)

These scallops were amazing, the butternut squash sauce with pancetta crumbs sprinkled on top was divine. This is one of the best starters I have ever had. Just perfect.

Fillet of Beef with soft polenta and seasonal mushrooms.

This was a perfect piece of filleted beef with a generous helping of polenta and seasonal mushrooms. Great sauce too.
While I feel I made an error ordering more polenta on the side, I did it without thinking, the polenta chips were also amazing.

photo 4 (6)

Very filling too. When I made my order the waiter smiled and said, “Good choice”. How right he was. The food was amazing and tasted both sophisticated and wholesome; a hard combination.

photo7

Burrata Crustini – Grilled aubergine, tomato, chilli and basil

The Burrata was beautifully presented and had a lovely milky texture. The portion was generous for a starter but it could have done with more flavor.

Grilled Swordfish

The grilled swordfish was recommended to me by one of the waiters and I immediately saw why. It was the best swordfish I have ever had. The fish had an incredible meaty texture and yet was still soft and juicy. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The lemon sauce was a perfect accompaniment. The acidic lemon contrasted beautifully with the fish. The portion was generous and the chef allowed the swordfish to be the star of the show and it was.

photo 5 (3)Dessert

For dessert we were treated to three fantastic puddings. Zabaoni, chocolate mousse with chocolate salami and Tiramisu.

Zabaoni

The Zabaoni had the usual creamy soft and fluffy texture but the top had been burnt slightly to caramelise the sugar a great touch. The Zabaoni was a sugary delight but I loved the addition of the lemon curd and raspberries below the main Zaboni. The acidity of the lemon curd and raspberries was a perfect contrast to the sugar. In my experience a Zabaoni can often end up being too sweet. Not in this case, the balance was perfect this was a really great pud.

photo 2 (8)

Chocolate Mouse

This was a tasty, creamy and chocolatey mousse. It was generous but not too rich. Once again the the chef had added something extra. In this case the beautifully made chocolate salami which you can see sticking out of the top of the mousse. It was a great addition which added another texture.

Tiramisu

I love a good Tiramisu. This was a great one. It was creamy, light and airy. Often a Tiramisu can be too heavy after you’ve had a large meal but this one was just right. This Tiramisu was more creamy than most I have had in the past and it was much better for it.

Kevin, our waiter, asked us which of three puddings was our favourite and we had a really tough time deciding. All three were first class and we couldn’t split them. If you had to really push me I’d probably go for the Zabaoni, just.

photo 1 (9)

photo 1 (10)After our puddings we were lucky enough to try a Negroni with chocolate and orange bitters. This classic cocktail came with a twist: chocolate and orange bitters. Heaven in cocktail form. Chocloate and Orange is just such a wonderful combination.

We finished our meal with a glass of excellent Limoncello

Diciannove was everything you want from a restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. Most importantly the food was fantastic. A great restaurant we highly recommend. And don’t forget to order the Swordfish!
