A Bonfire Night Treat – Roasted Red Pepper Soup

Early Autumn is one of my favourite culinary times of the year, root vegetables are becoming abundant, it is the season for game, hearty stews and fiery curries and it is when soups really come into their own. As the expected cold spell descends from the Artic just in time for Bonfire Night I thought I would pass one of our family favourite recipes. There is nothing as comforting after walking on the beach or kicking up some leaves up in the park with the children as a nice bowl of soup.

red-pepper-soup

We love creamy chowder, spicy sweet potato with cumin and chilli but in my house the girls love roasted red pepper best. This is a really easy, comforting recipe that freezes exceeding well so could be made in advance, it is a fantastic thick tasty potage full of sweet, smoky flavours and great served in a mug as you stand to watch the fireworks. Passed through a sieve it can be dressed up as a lovely lunchtime treat or simple supper dish. So for the perfect fifth of November feast make sure you have some crisp-skinned jacket potatoes freshly baked in the oven, a plate full of toffee apples for the children and a big, big pan of this delicious soup.

Roasted Red Pepper Soup            serves 4 to 6

2 large deep Red Peppers, halved & de-seeded.

1 large Onion, peeled and sliced

3 cloves of Garlic, peeled.

2 sticks of Celery, washed and thinly sliced

1 large Carrot, peeled and thinly sliced

2 x 400 gr tins of chopped Tomatoes

1/2 litre of Vegetable Stock

100 ml quality Olive Oil

50 gr Tomato Purée

1 heaped teaspoon dried Basil

1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika

Juice of one fresh Lemon

A generous pinch of dried Chilli flakes

Sea Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper

Pre-heat your oven to 200 C /  360 F / Gas Mark 4. Place the pepper halves and garlic cloves on to a baking tray and drizzle with a little of the olive oil. Bake at the top of your oven for thirty minutes until the vegetables are roasted and nicely caramelised. In the meantime, heat the remaining oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan, over a medium heat, and sauté the chopped up onion, carrot and celery for about ten minutes until soft.

In a second pan heat up the vegetable stock and add the tomato purée and the chilli flakes. Whisk and then add to the onions, celery and carrots. Peel any very dark, burnt spots from the peppers and add them, the garlic and remaining ingredients to the stock and vegetables. Bring the soup to a low boil, turn down the heat and simmer for twenty to twenty-five minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to completely cool then using a hand blender or food processor blitz the until the soup is smooth. You can pass the soup through a sieve if you want a more refined dinner party finish. To serve, reheat and season with salt, pepper and lemon to taste.

The first round-up of feel good stories for Christmas – for all ages.     Reviewed by Milly Adams

A Friend for Life – True stories from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

pic-1-a-friend-for-life

Opening with a foreword by Paul O’Grady, this heart-warming and uplifting collection of real life stories demonstrate the extraordinary lengths Battersea volunteers go to in order to give animals a second chance, as well as celebrating the power of animals to transform people’s lives.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home is the oldest and most-loved animal home in the country, caring for thousands of lost, abandoned or unwanted cats and dogs every year. But while they play a vital role in saving animals, quite often these animals go on to save their new owners in surprising ways.

Royalties from the sale of this book go towards supporting the work of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home (registered charity no.206394)

What’s not to like about this, especially if you’re an animal lover. A book very much full of love, hope, and sheer delight.

A Friend for Life: £6.99.

A Christmas Angel at the Ragdoll Orphanage by Suzanne Lambert

pic-2-suzanne

When the author, Suzanne, was left, two weeks old, at the door of an orphanage in Newcastle, it was Nancy the nanny who fought for the right to adopt Suzanne. Now, 60 years later, Suzanne is sharing the untold story of all the many orphans that her mother Nancy saved throughout the 1940s and 50s.
A Christmas Angel at the Ragdoll Orphanage tells the story of a remarkable woman, who worked tirelessly to give society’s most vulnerable children a chance of home and happiness. Full of touching, unforgettable stories, this is a wondrously festive book all about the real meaning of motherhood.

Another winner: an inspiring book, full of hope. As one with roots near Newcastle I loved this but even as a someone from down south I would have done, anyway.

A Pug Like Percy by Fiona Harrison

pic-3-pug

Be still my beating heart. This is a fantastic book for the Christmas stocking, but for what age? Children would enjoy it, and the print is such that it is easily read, but why deprive adults? What a peach of a pug.

Percy is homeless, abandoned by his owner at an animal rescue centre on a cold winter’s night. So when he finds a loving new home with Gail and her family, his deepest wish is that this time, it’s forever. Will it be, with the family under strain as the young daughter Jenny endures frequent trips to hospital?

Ah, wait and see.

Pro Plus 36 VARIDESK – standing desk

pic-a-standing-desk-pro-plus-36_main-10a88d7d8eef66cbc9309ff1100d93b41At last, some workplace relief…

As an author with Arrow, writing two books a year under a couple of names, plus running a small charity which helps wounded ex-service personnel, plus the role of contributing editor, feature writer and literary reviewer for Frost Magazine, plus teaching creating writing, plus…

Well, you get the idea.

Yep, so there I sit in my kitchen/dining room, which doubles as my study because I need to be in the heart of the house with the dogs scattered about. I sit there, typing, and thinking, and typing, with my bum getting bigger, and my back getting worse, hour after hour, producing the latest Margaret Graham, or Milly Adams, or whatever writing is needed that day. At the end of it, I swallow pills to cope with the backache.

Then I read that Churchill – as well as writing in bed, in the bath, at his desk – also wrote at a standing desk. I then thought of all the traditional clerks who stood at them too. Would this help me?

So I have ‘road tested’ the Pro Plus 36 VARIDESK

pic-1-desk

It’s the most amazing tool for anyone who types and writes a great deal. It can be used at the height you need – just squeeze the handles at the side and it will spring up effortlessly. I move it a little up and down from time to time, to ease the elbow and shoulder position.  If you find you would like to sit for a bit, just squeeze again, and lower it. You can see that the book (Milly Adams – Sisters at War) I had stood on the top level stayed upright as I lowered it.

pic-2-desk

The difference it makes is extraordinary because you are changing your position throughout the day, and taking the pressure off your spine as you sit. My back is vastly improved and I will save on chiropractic fees. But let me tell you a bit more.

The footprint is 4.5” H 36” W x 29.75” D (11.43 CM X 91.44 CM x 75.57 CM)

It is ideal for those with dual-monitor setups or larger workspace needs, but I find it great for my laptop, reference books, and coffee cup, not to mention my phone. However, ‘him indoors’ is showing too much interest in its two-tiered design with separate keyboard/mouse deck which gives you plenty of room for basics and accessories with the added convenience of never having to move any components when raising or lowering your VARIDESK.

Like all VARIDESK stand up desk models, the Pro Plus 36 features VARIDESK’s patented spring-assisted lift mechanism that allows you to raise and lower it almost effortlessly in just seconds, (that’s true, trust me) making it a true sit stand desk. It can hold up to 15.8kg (35 lbs.) with ease and stays sturdy and stable even at its fully extended height. There are other desks available too.

  • Free delivery
  • 4cm (36″) wide for larger, dual-monitor setups
  • Two-tier design: upper display surface, lower keyboard/mouse deck
  • Holds up to 15.8kg (35 lbs.)
  • Sits on top of existing desk.

Seriously, this is a great buy at RRP £335.

Best Endeavours, Best of Spirits: Jane Cable’s on what happens once that digital publishing deal is in the bag

BEST OF SPIRITS

For a writer of ghost stories Hallowe’en offers apparently boundless opportunities to promote your work. I benefitted greatly from this when my first novel, The Cheesemaker’s House, hit the bookshops one September and my friend and PR Lisa Holden was able to secure some wonderful reviews in seasonal features.

2016 is The Cheesemaker’s House’s fourth witching season so once again I decided to make the best of it by running promotions on Twitter and on Facebook to give away iBooks. While I won’t ‘sell’ my books for a big fat zero on Amazon (or anywhere else, for that matter) I’m happy to give iBooks – and paperbacks – as competition prizes because it opens the doors to new readers and requires a certain amount of engagement from them. And as you may have gathered, I just love engaging with people who love books.
Jane Cable, publishing, writing
This year my local writers’ group, Chindi Authors, has been supporting #LovetoRead (more of which in a few weeks) and as part of our efforts those of us with sufficient courage have been videoed reading from our books. My offering – the first chapter of The Cheesemaker’s House – can be accessed via my website here http://janecable.com/the-book/4577579495 . Do me a favour if you do visit the link… listen, but don’t look. But at least I can take comfort in the knowledge that next time I’ll dress more carefully.

Much as I love writing ghost stories I fell into it by accident. The Cheesemaker’s House didn’t start out that way, and The Seahorse Summer began life with a very different ghost. But I have a genuine fascination with the fictional possibilities presented by the ripping of the veil between this world and the next and with every new character from beyond the grave I want to stretch the boundaries a little bit more.

This year the Hallowe’en fear factor increased when Reading Writers asked me to judge their autumn competition which was for a short format ghost story. One poem and eight prose pieces later I realised that writers across all genres had been prepared to give it a go. Fantasy, thriller and humour were all represented and the winner used characters from his military work in progress to brilliant effect.

It was also a new experience sitting in front of a room full of writers and giving them feedback on their work. Most were extremely gracious (although I did detect a pursed lip or two), but technical errors aside at the end of the day a winning story is a matter of personal choice. It made me realise just how lucky I was that The Cheesemaker’s House found people who loved it… and just happened to be judging competitions.

The Fiesta Continues

Argentine Pop-Up Barullo delivered and conquered the appetites of many an anticipating guest this week. Hosted by Wines of Argentina and catered by Mauro Colagreco, we danced, drank and dined our way through the South American splendour in the heart of Hoxton. Barullo delivered to us Argentina with an extra serving of wine. My aim was to make my way though the extensive wine list but found myself somewhere after my 4th glass of Torrontes before I found that to be ‘wishful drinking’. Mauro Colagreco, owner of renowned Two Michelin Star French restaurant Mirazur, served up a sumptuous four-course meal perfectly suited to the supper-club style dining area making it an evening full of the delights of Argentina.

image002-2
The end of Barullo does not mean the fiesta has ended though as our equally esteemed Argentine friends at Gaucho have come up with another night to remember with another appearance from Mauro himself. On the 11th November. Gaucho welcomes “The 10 Hands”. Featuring 5 of the most influential and creative chefs of Argentina; Mauro Colagreco, Fernando Trocca, Narda Lepez, Guido Tassi and German Martitegui, are to showcase their gastronomic expertise just for you. Centered around the infamous Asado (Argentine Barbecue), Gaucho Piccadilly’s terrace will be transformed into a night of Argentine bbq indulgence featuring five-courses of pure Argentinian fayre served with pairings from their sumptuous wine list.

Tickets are priced at £100 and will be available from the Gaucho Website;

Sisters at War: author Milly Adams talks about her inspirational cousin and leaves you with the ingredients for a novel.

sisters at war book review Milly adams

Why did I choose to write about the Air Transport Auxiliary in Sisters at War?

The ATA was a civilian organisation that flew all manner of airplanes from the wartime factories to the bases for the boys in blue to fly – in defence of our country in the 2nd World War.

One of the women who flew those planes was my cousin, Maureen. To join the ATA, women pilots needed a minimum of 500 hours solo flying – twice that of a man. Sigh… I wanted to write about her, and all the other girls like her.

pic-1-picture_post_In early 1942 Maureen and her sister travelled from their home in Argentina on a neutral Argentine-registered ship and while her sister joined the BBC, Maureen joined the ATA, one of a total of 164 female pilots to do so. She probably flew 38 types of aircraft, including Spitfires, Mustangs and bombers. Once the canopy of her Spitfire cockpit blew off after take off and on another occasion she had to put down in a field after the engine of her airplane failed in the air.

My cousin became a cover girl for Picture Post when photographed pushing her hair out of her face after she left the cockpit of her aircraft. She was a shy person, and that wouldn’t have necessarily pleased her.

At the end of the war, she qualified as a flying instructor at RAF Luton, before returning to Argentina. There she instructed pilots and flew for the Argentine Air Force and also worked as a commercial pilot. Finally, married with two children, she moved toNorfolk to breed Arab horses..

Maureen survived the war though several of her friends did not. My father, a fighter pilot, admired Maureen enormously, and all the ATA pilots, who flew unarmed, in appalling conditions, and without complaint. I wanted to wrap a character around her, her courage and ethics. Hence Bryony in Sisters at War.

I rather fear her irritating sister, Hannah, was me as an adolescent but we’ll keep that quiet.

The other character I absolutely loved, was the evacuee Cissie. I have a need to put an inspirational child into my books. Is it because I have four children and have to keep on nurturing youngsters, and perhaps make fewer mistakes? Who knows – my mum always said that the one certain thing is that you always feel you could have done better. The child is invariably there, a central character, one around which things happen, and who grows, and challenges, develops,  and enhances the lives of grown-ups. Then there’s the bloke, or blokes…

Who knows how the trawlers were utilised in the war? Not many of you, I bet. I didn’t until a friend, Tracy Baines, told me about her grandfather. Well, the trawlers became armed, and took on convoy protection, minesweeping and heaven knows what. They were the bravest of the brave and were ignored after the war. They didn’t, and don’t, deserve that. They deserve recognition. My book isn’t enough, not nearly, but it’s something, and what a great bunch of men they were, and are.

So, my books have history, setting, a girl, a bloke, some romance, a child who heals, an irritation, and from that anyone can weave a story. Try it and see.
