inspiring women 1

This month saw the launch of the 23rd Inspiring Women Awards at the Midland Hotel, Manchester.

The awards celebrate women across the North West in the following categories:

– Business Award

– Community Award

– Entrepreneur Award

– Inspirational Leadership in Arts and Culture

– Inspiring Young Woman Award (18-25)

– Nurturing Female (Company) Talent Award

The launch was hosted by founder Jacqueline Hughes-Lundy who introduced the sponsors for this year (including New Charter Housing Trust, Lancashire Life, Cheshire Life, Deloitte, Selfridges and Manchester Metropolitan University) and thanked them for their support of the event.

Nominations open tomorrow and will stay open until 27th March 2015 when three finalists will be chosen and invited to the Awards Ceremony which will take place at the beautiful Midland Hotel on 15th May 2015 where the winners will be announced. The Awards celebrate the most inspirational women in the North West who go about their daily lives often not realising what a real impact they are making nor how inspirational they are.

Last year saw Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen present an award with Gregg Wallace attending the event in 2007. Keep an eye on the website for this years speakers, to nominate an inspirational woman you know and to book your tickets. It will be an event you don’t want to miss.

Omega & Alpha: The End And The Beginning

Ferraris and Easter Oratorios? Where else but Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset. Last Saturday (September 20th) I went to a performance of Omega & Alpha: the End and the Beginning. And yes, it was in the Motor Museum. Which meant we wandered around the famous Red Room, with all its Ferraris, while we anticipated hearing Martin Emslie’s Oratorio. Oratorio 1

Martin, who began his professional life as an engineer and is now, largely thanks to this amazing work, a Fellow of the London School of Music, wrote both the words and music. “Why?” I asked him.

Martin has been Director of Music of Castle Cary Choir since 2009 and he was very aware that most newly commissioned choral music was suited mainly to the needs of professional singers. He wanted to create a work that was good enough to be sung by a professional choir, but also accessible enough to be sung by amateur performers. This meant restricting the vocal range, and writing music that could be performed by a chamber orchestra, but also, at its simplest, with organ accompaniment alone. Only three soloists are required Tenor, Bass-baritone and Mezzo soprano. And because the choir rather than the soloists would be the main focus of the work, he wanted a narrative in which they, the onlookers and witnesses, could tell the bulk of the story rather than simply echo or reinforce the atmosphere around the soloists.Oratorio 2

The Easter story was his choice. In his research he found something that was not only profound but also posed as many questions as it answered. It was a mystery, with witnesses providing conflicting viewpoints and opinions. The more he read the Gospels, the  more he realised that the narrative tension demanded an answer to the question that came to be the Oratorio’s theme: Was this an end or a beginning? Its title tells us: it was an end, necessary to allow a new beginning. His words and music dramatize the agony and exultation of the journey towards this revelation.

The Oratorio was first performed in Wells Cathedral last year but since then Martin has extended and developed it considerably, and this was the premiere of the final version. Having also been at the Wells premiere I was interested to know what had been gained or lost by the work’s development.

The evening was crowded: a capacity audience filled the auditorium and we were spellbound. The Castle Cary Choir rose to the occasion, as did the orchestra. The acoustics were a little less friendly than those of the Cathedral but the impact of the work was undiminished. For me there are two stand-out sections from the first half: the tenor solo in which Jesus faces his ‘predicament’ and the chorus’s mocking witness to his climb to Golgotha ‘Climb, climb, carry the cross’. The first song hints to me of Lloyd Webber at his best and the tension between words and music of the second move me almost to tears. At the end of this half, after The Crucifixion, Martin simply walked away from the podium, leaving the audience in silence. It felt absolutely right, giving us time to take breath and regain our emotional balance before the applause exploded.Oratorio 3

If the first half ends in the terror of Jesus’s death, the second moves towards resolution and revelation, with Mary coming into her own as she defies the angels who ask ‘Why weepest thou?’ The ending is Pentecost with its ‘gift of tongues’. Martin gives us this with the singing of ‘Thanks be to God’ in seven different languages. Of the 7 part harmony involved, Martin said: ‘I enjoyed doing that.’

And we enjoyed listening to it. The Oratorio, in both short and long versions, is now attracting deserved worldwide attention: from Chile, USA, Korea, Finland, South Africa among others. I am grateful to have been one of those able to attend its earliest performances.

If you get a chance to see this Oratorio, or know a choral society looking for something new, I can’t recommend Omega & Alpha: the End and the Beginning highly enough.

“And how on earth are you going to follow that?” I asked Martin. He smiled and told me that Mrs Noah and the Flood is previewing in Taunton Brewhouse on the 15th and 16th of November before moving to London. For this one he’s focused on the music and Sasha Herriman has created the book and lyrics. He tells me the music was ‘fun to write’, and I look forward to seeing and hearing it on my next visit to the Brewhouse. Go to see it if you can.

Luster Pro Light Review: UK’s First Complete DIY Teeth Whitening System

Out of all of the things you can do to look younger, whitening your teeth is one of the most important. It takes years off you. Teeth whitening can be expensive though, and scary. I have heard stories in the past of people burning away their gums. Thankfully these are now a thing of the past. The UK’s First Complete DIY Teeth Whitening System, Luster Pro Light has been released. Let’s find out if it works.

luster Pro Light Review

It uses the same paint-on whitening gel and Dual-Action ‘blue light’ technology that is used by dentists. Luster Pro Light does work and it also did not upset my sensitive teeth. It is clinically proven to be safe and effective which I was glad to read before I used it. I am always very cautious before I use anything. It can be a little bit of a pain pretreating with whitening solution, brushing and then applying the dual-action whitening. The ready-to-use trays which you put in your mouth are not exactly comfortable but this is all small fry and a minimal amount of effort that you can do in the comfort of your own home.

The treatment really does work. You can even use the rapid schedule and get results in 30 minutes. I will definitely use this again for top ups. Already a best-seller and close to becoming the No. 1 teeth whitening system in America where it first went on sale, this is good stuff indeed.

And For Breakfast: Lizi’s Granola & Nature’s Path Gluten Free Porridge Review

It is the most important meal of the day and without it I get rather grumpy. So with that in mind I reviewed some breakfast options.

First up is Lizi’s Granola.

The press release calls it ‘the UK’s healthiest and most tasty breakfast cereal’. Lizi’s Granola is not new but has a new low sugar variant. It has less than 4% sugar. Impressive and definitely a plus with the amount of bad press sugar gets now. It is just not good for you. When I first tasted this granola I wasn’t sure if I liked it but as I finished I did. It is tasty and has just a touch of sweetness. It is nutty and oaty and also makes you feel healthy. It is high in fibre and all of the ingredients are natural. It is really good granola with less sweetness. You could also add more sweetness by adding fruit or yoghurt. Tasty and healthy.

Lizi’s Low Sugar Granola retails at £3.89 for 500g. Low Sugar available in Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

Nature’s Path Gluten Free Hot And Steamy Porridge Oats have the advantage of not having that other things people hate at the moment: gluten. The box has three flavours: original, spiced apple and maple. They are convenient, you can put them in the microwave after adding water, or just add some milk or water and cook for two minutes on the hob. They are high in fibre, suitable for vegans, kosher and made with natural, organic ingredients. But how do they taste? Amazing. High quality, even with water instead of milk and keeps you full until lunchtime. They are far too healthy to taste so good. Available from Waitrose, Ocado, eBay and Amazon.

Glo-Minerals 3-in-1 Color Stick Review

I am a huge fan of fast beauty. Convenience is key. Who has the time to spend hours on looking good? Not many of us. So I love products that multi-task. They also take up less room and are great for traveling.

This 3-in-1 Color Stick from Glo-Minerals is not unique, the multi-sticks have been around for a while but it certainly has a place on the market. This is a Limited Edition three-in-one stick for cheeks, lips and eyes. This soft, shimmering, pink-peach hue complements all skin tones and skin types. It is available in one shade: doll face and has vitamin E to soothe skin.

Glo-Minerals 3-in-1 Color Stick Review

Glo-Minerals 3-in-1 Color Stick

The colour is a beautiful, fresh colour that looks summery and suits all skin tones. It gives a healthy glow and looks beautiful on. When you use it on your eyes it is not as pink as you think it will be. A little also goes a long way. It does look pink on the lips. I love it. A great product that saves space and money. Good stuff.

Limited Edition 3 in 1 Colour Stick in Dollface. Available from www.glo-minerals.com £11.95.

WOW Face Mask Review

I was initially going to do a funny Instagram picture of myself wearing this mask a la Suki Waterhouse. Upon putting the mask on vanity prevailed however. The mask comes in two separate pieces, one for your lower face and one for the top. Once it is on you look like a burns victim. It is not a good look but who cares? You are making yourself beautiful. My husband certainly didn’t. He didn’t even crack a joke.

I found the mask a little hard to put on. You also have to be careful is doesn’t slide of your face. I lay on the sofa smoothing it down. It feels nice and soothing. I watch Parks And Recreation on Amazon Prime while reading a book I am reviewing. So I am not very good at switching off and relaxing but I will be lying here for 40 minutes. I actually like the gel feeling of the mask and am sure I can feel it working away.

After 40 minutes of looking plain weird I take the mask off. I then give the result the ultimate test: I ask my husband if he can notice a difference in my skin. He says he can. I look ‘fresh’. Brilliant. The mummy look is worth it.

I did only use this mask once so I can’t say if it makes a long-lasting difference to skin with long term use, but I was impressed with the results I saw. I would like to try it again but at £99 it is slightly out of my budget.

WOW face mask treatment review

Here is what the they say:

The NEW Aqua Gel Mask Treatment that fights the ageing process

WOW mask is a brand NEW Bio-peptide Aqua Gel mask that contains innovative natural ingredients to restore the skin’s tone, elasticity and hydration to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles. It releases the essence of nature’s most potent skin-loving plants at exactly the right speed for your skin to get the maximum benefit.

Institute Hyalual Switzerland, a scientific research centre dedicated to skin rejuvenation, created the mask as the simplest and most effective way to combine the moisturising effect of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), Argireline (famed for its skin firming properties) and RMCP-complex (a combination of ingredients that include fruit and leaf cell culture and flower extract). It’s the interaction between HA, Argireline and RMCP-complex which results in such a complete anti-ageing effect.

The mask also uses newly developed Transdermal Cosmetics Delivery technology which is activated by skin temperature to allow the ingredients to reach the deeper layers of skin. This means that WOW mask provides 200% more hydration than other collagen-based moisturising treatments.

There are five masks provided in each box and each mask can be used for 20-40 minutes. Simply wash and dry your face, take the mask out of its silver sleeve and remove the protective plastic sheets and put it on your face.

It’s not magic but WOW mask offers the best that nature and science can provide in terms of beautiful and youthful looking skin.

The Glamour Trio: Cult Classic Beauty Review. Elnett, Corn Silk & Max Factor

Every woman needs a bit of glamour in her life. These Amazon bestsellers may be retro and glam, but do they work as good as they look? Let’s find out.

First up is a classic, Cornsilk Satin Loose Powder . Powder is very underrated. There was a point where not many people wore it because it was considered old fashioned. It is making a comeback now solely because nothing else really gives a flawless finish the way powder does. This powder sets make up beautifully and makes it last all day. It is brilliant stuff and won’t leave you looking like a ghost. Recommended. There is a reason it is a classic. A natural looking powder that works on light and darker skin tones. It does give a matte look but not too much, it still looks natural.

Next is Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara in Black. Anyone remember those adverts which called Max Factor the ‘make up of make up artists’? The brand has always had a certain amount of glamour and movie star attachment. This mascara really works. You can use a little for stunning lashes or a lot for full-on false lash glamour. Is quite hard to get off but a small price to pay for beautiful lashes.

L’Oreal Elnett UV Filter Hairspray is another classic. I remember my mother using Elnett when I was growing up. I always use a hairspray with a UV filter as my hair goes really blonde in the sun if I don’t. The sun is also very damaging to the hair and ages it. We remember this about our face but not everyone remembers their hair. Elnett has stood the test of time because it really works and then it just brushes out. The one for coloured hair accentuates your colour’s radiance. They also have ones for extra hold and extra radiance. It is not too heavy on hair or sticky. Just brilliant hairspray.

What do you think? Are you a fan of any of the above?
