The Glamour Trio: Cult Classic Beauty Review. Elnett, Corn Silk & Max Factor

Every woman needs a bit of glamour in her life. These Amazon bestsellers may be retro and glam, but do they work as good as they look? Let’s find out.

First up is a classic, Cornsilk Satin Loose Powder . Powder is very underrated. There was a point where not many people wore it because it was considered old fashioned. It is making a comeback now solely because nothing else really gives a flawless finish the way powder does. This powder sets make up beautifully and makes it last all day. It is brilliant stuff and won’t leave you looking like a ghost. Recommended. There is a reason it is a classic. A natural looking powder that works on light and darker skin tones. It does give a matte look but not too much, it still looks natural.

Next is Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara in Black. Anyone remember those adverts which called Max Factor the ‘make up of make up artists’? The brand has always had a certain amount of glamour and movie star attachment. This mascara really works. You can use a little for stunning lashes or a lot for full-on false lash glamour. Is quite hard to get off but a small price to pay for beautiful lashes.

L’Oreal Elnett UV Filter Hairspray is another classic. I remember my mother using Elnett when I was growing up. I always use a hairspray with a UV filter as my hair goes really blonde in the sun if I don’t. The sun is also very damaging to the hair and ages it. We remember this about our face but not everyone remembers their hair. Elnett has stood the test of time because it really works and then it just brushes out. The one for coloured hair accentuates your colour’s radiance. They also have ones for extra hold and extra radiance. It is not too heavy on hair or sticky. Just brilliant hairspray.

What do you think? Are you a fan of any of the above?

Frost Mascara Special

We reviewed four inexpensive mascaras, because looking great doesn’t always have to be expensive.

mascara reviewGeorge Volume Lash Mascara

This was a little runny the first time we used it but afterwards was fine. The one we tried wasn’t waterproof and by the end of the day we had panda eyes. It only costs £3.50 and is good for the price. Available from ASDA

2True Pro WOW Mascara

This mascara is not just excellent for the price, but is just excellent full stop. The waterproof version was on Watchdog for being good. We tried the non-waterproof one. It gives supercharged volume and an amazing WOW effect. It doesn’t clump or flake. Good stuff.  Available from Superdrug for only £3.

Pur Big Look Extreme Mascara Waterproof

This mascara is very different. It is made with Argan Oil, a revolutionary ingredient, loaded with lash-loving omega fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidant. It says it has a clump-resistant wand but when we put it on the first time it was quite clumpy and awkward. It is waterproof but doesn’t seem smudge-proof when you first put it on. It is fine after a while though, so just don’t touch your eyes.

George Volume Lash

This is a brilliant mascara. It only costs about £2.50 and it is as good as very expensive mascara brands. It coats mascara from root to tip and gives great volume. It is clump free and very black. We’re a fan.

The Best Tights For Autumn

I am a huge fan of tights and stockings. They can instantly update a look. I have picked out some of my favourites from MyTights.com and reviewed them. I modeled them myself so you can see what they look like on a normal women. Here goes….

Pamela Mann Sheer Dotty Tights

Pretty tights with a dainty spotted design to suit every age and every style.

These are very timeless. Dotty tights have always been popular. I love this pair. They are really comfortable, elegant and luxurious.

Spanx High Waisted Tight End Tights

These high waisted opaque tights will shape your bottom and midriff for a slimline silhouette. All of my actor friends kept telling me about Spanx, so I decided to try them. I heard that Spanx were really uncomfortable, but to be honest, once I got them on I was fine. As long as you get them in the right size they are great. It’s a myth that they make you a lot thinner, but they really do smooth you out. These tights are perfect if you have any too tight clothes. The slip on afterward. I liked what they did to my silhouette.

These 40 denier Argyle Backseam Tights by Mary Portas and Charnos feature argyle diamonds on the back of the leg – a subtle way to get in on the trend for heritage patterns. I LOVE these tights. They have a subtle Argyle backseam. I got loads of complements when I wore them. They are really quirky and fun. Exactly what you would expect from Mary Portas. Comfy too. Check out the Indigo ones. Gorgeous. With their dainty opaque polka dots from toe to waist, these Sheer Spot Tights by Mary Portas and Charnos will get you in line with one of this season’s most wearable trends. More dots! This time in silver, and the black pair with dots that are less subtle. Beautiful, cool tights. They get my stamp of approval.

What tights will you be wearing this autumn?

Hot Tights For Summer.

I love tights and stockings. They are such a brilliant way to update your look. Frost has sourced some cool tights for this season and reviewed them for you.

Black Opaque tights.

You really cannot go wrong with Black Opaque tights. These Charnos 60d ones are comfortable (a rare thing in some tights) the waistband doesn’t hurt and they look great. Full marks.

Charnos Simple Bare Tights in Nude. These are 7D with the strength of 15 denier. The packaging says that they let legs breathe and they do. The tights feel very nice. They are good quality and they look good. They don’t snag easily and the waistband doesn’t hurt. A big thing for me. Some tights seem to cut you in half at the waist, and that’s not healthy.

The Ava Hold Up has been made to celebrate 75 years of Charnos. It has a Leaf Print Back-seam Hold-up. Which is Silver.

These are elegantly sexy. Really lovely hold ups that stay on and look good. The band is comfy to. The silver leaf print back-seam is a beautiful detail. They are elegant and fashionable. These really do stay up all day. No slipping or sliding.

Black Hold ups. Fan net design. Satin lace top.
These are far too comfy for something so beautiful. The band is good around the leg too. They stay up well.

Charnos Killer Figure opaque control tights. Tones bum, tum and thighs. Smooths your shape. Comfort waistband. Lifts the bottom.

These are slightly hard to get into but are very comfortable for control tights. The do smooth out your shape. It may be in my head but I did seem a little more toned the next day. They are good tights which look good on. I don’t feel like all of my internal organs are being squeezed together.

Stocking tights: Stripe mock hold up design tights.

These are huge at the moment; Tights that look like stockings. Lots of celebrities may have been seen wearing them but the look is still fresh. These mock stocking tights look great and are good quality. The are tamer than some of the ones I have seen, more elegant. They are both wearable and glamorous.

3 pair pack of socks. Eros pink mix. One size.

And let’s add some socks in. These Charnos cotton socks are comfortable and look good. They Eros pink mix is very sweet too. They are just very cute. The socks are good quality and don’t cut off your circulation.

What tights will you be wearing this year?

What are you doing for Black History Month?

As the UK enters Black History month, NHS Choices, the national website of the NHS is putting the spotlight on black health heroes at www.nhs.uk/blackhistorymonth. The siteprofiles members of the African and Caribbean community who are improving the health and lives of others. NHS Choices also sheds light on conditions that are more likely to affect the black population, www.nhs.uk/blackhealth.

Amongst the celebrated health heroes is Dr Tunji Lasoye, an A&E consultant and surgeon in an inner city hospital, who often encounters victims of knife crimes. Also featured is Rudolph Isaacs, a rare-type blood donor whose donations are especially vital to people who suffer with sickle cell anaemia, which affects the black community more than others. The work of the trailblazer Nola Ishmael OBE, is also acknowledged for her contributions to nursing.
According to recent statistics from the NHS Information Centre, the numbers of BME (black and minority ethnic) hospital doctors are on the rise. There has been an 73% increase of BME hospital doctors, from 22,775 in 2000 to 39,476 in 2010.[1]

Barry Mussenden OBE, Deputy Director for Equality and Partnerships at the Department of Health says; “Black and minority ethnic people have contributed greatly to the NHS for over 60 years since the Windrush era, this recognition by NHS Choices shows the appreciation to all those inspirational health heroes throughout the UK.”

To further help ethnic minority communities to get reliable health information, NHS Choices has now incorporated a translation function into the site. This enables visitors to read most pages in more than 50 languages.

Riots Update: Ealing Man Left Fighting For Life; Backlash Continues.

A 68 year old Ealing resident is still fighting for this life today. Police have expressed worry for the pain who is still on life support. He was attacked on Tuesday after confronting rioters who had set fire to a bin. He was trying to put the fire out. He was attacked and has ‘savage’ head injuries that left the police unable to tell his age, he has since been identified and the police are looking for his family.

On Wednesday morning three young Asian men were knocked down and killed while trying to defend their properties. Police in Birmingham have launched a murder inquiry. A man was arrested and had his car impounded following the incident near a mosque in the Dudley road area.

The father on one of the victims, Haroon Jahan, 21, called for peace and asked for their no be no more violence or retribution for his son’s death. He stated that this was not a ‘race’ issue.

A spokesman for the West Midlands force said: “The incident took place close to the Jet filling station on Dudley Road in Winson Green at approximately 1.15am. Three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and an incident support officer was sent to the scene.

“When crews arrived, they found around 80 people at the scene with resuscitation ongoing on three men. Crews used their advanced life support skills while police officers provided support.”

Violence in Birmingham on Tuesday was not as bad as Monday but it spread to West Bromwich and Wolverhampton. London was relatively calm after 16,000 police officers hit the street with rubber bullets.

Independent record labels and filmmakers have been left devastated after a fire destroyed a blaze in a Sony warehouse in Enfield. The Pias Group feared a ‘ruinous’ stock loss. The three-storey, 20,000 square-metre building in Enfield, owned by Sony DADC was burned to the ground.

The fire affected Domino and film production companies with DVD stock. Pias is the UK’s largest independent sales, marketing and distribution company.

Other labels that might be affected include 4AD, Warp and Beggars Banquet.

A on Pias’s website said: “There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for Pias in the UK and Ireland. Pias is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. Pias’s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected. More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners.”

The release of Arctic Monkeys’ new single, The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala, was affected, all stock going to retail outlets had been destroyed in the fire.

There has been a lot of debate about the riots from various sources, including Darcus Howe, a West Indian Writer and Broadcaster. His controversial interview has been seen by millions of people.

I disagree with him on three counts, 1) Not all of the rioters were black 2) Working class white people are just as disenfranchised as blacks. 3) There is never any excuse for this behaviour, no matter where you are from.

The student who was mugged while bleeding has spoke of his ordeal. Ashraf Rossli said: “They threatened to stab me, they told me they had knives,”. The student from Malaysia only arrived in England a month ago.

He went on to say:

‘Some of them were quite young, maybe still in primary school. They had their hoods on and demanded my bicycle.’

In the YouTube video he is apparently helped to his feet by a Good Samaritan but the thieves took his wallet, phone and Sony PSP games console.

The video was even mentioned by David Cameron today in his address to parliament.

‘When we see children as young as 13, looting and laughing, when we see the disgusting sight of an injured young man with people pretending to help him while they are robbing him, it is clear that there are things that are badly wrong in our society,’ said the Prime Minister.

The 20-year-old finance student had his jaw broken but said “Britain is great” and said he felt sorry for this attackers.

A petition calling on the Government to evict the looters from council houses and stop their benefits has had 83,000 signatures in 24 hours. It only needs 100,000 signatures to be debated in parliament.
