To open the celebrations, last night London’s O2 Arena played host to a very exciting event to celebrate the release of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games this coming Monday. Fans were treated to an exclusive screening of the 15 certificate version of the movie, previously not screened in the UK, hosted by friends of Panem and top UK entertainment site Digital Spy. To let fans get even closer to the action and really fill the shoes of Katniss Everdeen the screening was hosted at Cineworld at the O2’s D-Box theatre so attendees could feel every heart-wrenching moment of the games!

As well as the chance for fans to see the 15 certificate of the hit film, 12 lucky competition winners, our very own Tributes, also had the amazing opportunity to ascend the O2 to take part in a live reaping on top of the Arena itself. Our winning tribute Ryan Crane from Leytonstone, London, received a pair of tickets to the World Premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire for his bravery and courage in scaling the famous London structure! Our plucky winner said: “The event was brilliant, it was really windy when we got to the top and really dramatic. I’m so excited to be going to the world premier, it was so unexpected. I dorkily hugged the guy when I won, it was quite embarrassing!”

Glasvegas + Es Muss Sein – Relentless Garage, London | Music Review

Es Muss Sein

Tonight’s show was opened by Es Muss Sein, a 16 year old singer-songwriter from Kent. EMS was personally invited to open the show by Rab from Glasvegas who found her via her facebook page. Her debut EP has been earning her rave reviews, including here at Frost, and so we took the opportunity to catch her at her biggest live performance to date.

At four songs short it was a quick set. “Wave Goodbye”, “Sail”, “Seeping” and “Those Eyes” give off little more than the EP did. Hauntingly soulful, achingly beautiful. Nerves showed at the start but she grew in confidence with every  strum of her guitar. She told me afterwards that she”doubted she was good enough” and that she was “very scared”. On this performance the only thing you doubt is that she’ll be bottom of the bill for much longer.

Glasvegas

It’s been a few years since I last saw Glasvegas, atop a mountain near Bern, and it’s fair to say a lot’s happened. In those two years the band have released a new album, Europric Heartbreak, lost their original drummer, Caroline McKay, gained a new drummer, Jonna Löfgren (more on her later), but the most striking change in them is they’re no longer fresh faced new kids on the block. They’ve less teeth and more tattoos yet still, after battling the drugs, perils and heartbreak of fame appear to wear the “happy to be here” look.

Frontman James Allen, as usual dressed all in black, looks exactly like Joe Strummer but despite his attire and the fact that he has the look of a man who may bite your neck at any moment, his autobiographical lyrics about his absent father, his social worker and the struggles of growing up in working class Britain gave him an air of vulnerability that had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand.

They began with songs from Mercury Award nominated debut album Glasvegas. Opening song “Flowers & Football Tops”, or in Scottish “Flowers & Fitba Tops”, was written about the reaction to the racially motivated murder in Glasgow of Kriss Donald, a Celtic fan – the same team the band support. It works equally as well as a eulogy for their arch rivals Rangers Football Club, a club staring into the abyss. “Geraldine” comes next, followed by “It’s my own cheating heart . . . ” and the band are on a roll. Hit after hit with the audience. Anthem after working class anthem. It’s a brilliant talent of Allen’s, much like that of Alex Turner and Jarvis Cocker, to turn the mundane aspects of life into anthemic greatness.

Sounds from “Euphoric Heartbreak” didn’t quite stir the same excitement as songs from their previous record but it was an interesting sound and certainly a bit of a departure. Less straightforward rock n roll and a bit more experimental.

It must be said though that new drummer, Jonna Löfgren, is the star of the show. She’s taken over from James Allen as the band’s sunglasses-wearer and oozes rock ‘n’ roll swagger. No sitting down for her though. She stands. All the way through. What you get is pure energy. Imagine Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk dosed to the max on cocaine and pro plus and you’re only halfway there.

Glasvegas tonight in London felt like they were beginning something again. The audience saw a band testing themselves and their boundaries but also a band looking at the mountain off success that they scaled with their first album and thinking “I’ll climb that”. And so they just might!

In that two years the band have recorded a new album, lost their original drummer – Caroline McKay, gained a new one – Jonna Löfgren, bassistPaul Donoghue has lost some teeth, guitarist Rab Allen got some tattoos and singer James Allen nearly lost his mind.

Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch To Make Directorial Debut.

Belle and Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch and Producer Barry Mendel Seek Fan Support and Funding for Glasgow Musical Film GOD HELP THE GIRL at www.kickstarter.com

Belle and Sebastian’s leader Stuart Murdoch alongside two-time Oscar nominated producer Barry Mendel have launched a global rallying call to fans and investors to support their upcoming film God Help The Girl via the world’s largest, digital funding platform for creative projects http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/godhelpthegirl/god-help-the-girl-musical-film

God Help The Girl marks Murdoch’s feature film debut as both writer and director and Mendel’s first UK project following an impressive run of international box office hits including Bridesmaids, Munich, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Serenity, Whip It and Rushmore.

Offering a range of prizes starting at just $5 with more expensive items including a guided tour of the film’s locations and dinner date with Murdoch, on screen credit and even Murdoch’s Personal Gold Record for Belle & Sebastian’s debut album, Tigermilk. The team hope to achieve their goal of $100,000 USD by March 2012.

“This is a really, really good idea. We’re cutting out the middle men. It’s punk,” comments writer/director Stuart Murdoch.

“Financing models like Kickstarter are the future. I want people to realize that without them, we can’t make this movie. Their contribution is the difference between this movie existing out there in the world and this movie just being a great script and wonderful music that never got made,” adds producer Barry Mendel.

Some of the songs Murdoch wrote for the film were recorded and released on a God Help The Girl album and EP Stills in 2009.

UK producers Phil Robertson and Chris Curling of Zephyr Films and Carole Sheridan of Singer Films are working alongside Mendel on the project.

Lorraine Chase returns to ‘Luton Airport’ to celebrate easyJet’s 65 millionth Luton passenger

EasyJet, the UK’s largest airline, today celebrated reaching the milestone of flying its 65 millionth passenger from London Luton Airport and announced that it is launching a new route to Corfu, the airline’s 34th route from the airport.

Lorraine Chase who checked in easyJet’s first ever passenger in 1995, also through Luton, was on hand to toast the milestone occasion and route launch with passengers and crew.

All involved celebrated in style with easyJet’s award-winning Louis Mondeville Côtes de Gasgogne – recently voted the best airline white wine* – and special easyJet cake.

As part of today’s celebration easyJet previewed its new TV commercial, which will be airing from October.

Lorraine has been synonymous with Luton since the Campari advert – which kick-started her career – spawned her catchphrase “Luton Airport!” as a reply to the question “Were you truly wafted here from paradise?” The ad then inspired the 1979 hit record “Luton Airport” by Cats U.K.

Today marks Lorraine’s second star appearance for easyJet as she officially launched the airline’s first-ever route in 1995 from Luton to Glasgow and checked-in easyJet’s first-ever passengers.

Paul Simmons, easyJet’s UK Director, said: “We couldn’t think of anyone more appropriate to celebrate our milestone achievement and new Corfu route launch with than Lorraine, we’re really pleased she was able to join us again at London Luton Airport. “

easyJet will begin flying to Corfu next year meaning the airline now offers passengers a choice of 34 destinations. The new route will operate twice a week from 31 March 2012. Prices start from £37.99 and are now on sale.
