Keep Off The Cold With A Cardigan

Just about every famous modern day UK woman has been photographed wearing a cardigan. They are quintessential components of every female life.

We throw them on and off all day and all year long. We shrug one on to go out and fetch the milk from the doorstep in the morning. We reach for the cardie on the back of our chair when we are working, if the room suddenly feels a little cold. We grab one on the way out to watch the kids enjoying their football practice. We decide to pop one on top of the picnic basket “just in case.” We wear the lovely cashmere ones to formal occasions and hang onto the shabby, baggy ones to do the hoovering and housework.
cardigan
Lots of us drape one over our shoulders in bed while we’re reading a book or watching a favourite show on our laptop. They are the nearest thing in clothing terms to a girl’s best
friend – and we would all be lost without them.

In years gone by, the cardigan had a bad reputation. It was associated with a downtrodden and world weary look. It represented an attitude of “couldn’t care less” about what you wore and how you presented yourself to the world. But with modern manufacturing processes, the wealth of superb materials to work with, and all the top designers, including David Emmanuel, weaving their magic over the garments, cardigans are no longer the poor cousins of the wardrobe.

Just as well really because cardigans are lifesavers. It is hard to imagine surviving in
the British Isles without a good selection of them. They slip on and off so easily, unlike
jumpers, and this is what really makes them stand out from the crowd. The majority of women would much prefer the choice of a cardigan over a jumper for the pure and simple reason that it is uninhibiting. If you are too hot, you take it off; if you are too cold, you put it back on. It’s as simple as that. Jumpers are a great deal more hassle, as they involve all that pulling on and off over the head, and there is no guarantee that this process won’t mess up your hair, leave you feeling flushed and maybe even a bit ridiculous, in the effort required to wriggle out of it.

Why put yourself through such an ordeal when a cardigan will save you from all that stress? There has never been a better time to buy from the extraordinary range of styles, colours and shapes that are now widely available. It is certainly not a case of one size fits all. Cardigans can be long or short, sculptured or straight, patterned or plain, hugging or loose, chunky or tight. You need never worry about looking frumpy if you choose wisely and opt for a well-made garment that fits you nicely and keeps you cosy into the bargain.

For some cardigan inspiration, and some retail therapy at the same time, why not take a look at the Bonmarche range of knitwear? This is a company which knows what women want and that, in a word, is a cardie. It can be comfy, it can be casual, it can be smart, it can be sophisticated, but we all know we need them.

From Virginia Woolf to the Royal family, every woman worth her salt has posed in a cardigan, secure in the knowledge that she is an icon of British womanhood. And if
it’s good enough for the Queen and top celebrities, it surely is good enough for the
rest of us? Wear your cardie with pride. We are the women of Britain and we love our
cardigans.

Independent film Third Contact Tours after making cinema history at BFI IMAX

Third Contact is the debut feature film from Director Simon Horrocks and his company, BodyDouble Films. After a successful premiere at the renowned BFI IMAX, the independent film will make its way around the UK, Europe, America and Canada over the next four months. Screenings are being funded by Indiegogo and Tugg using a unique ‘cinema on demand’ approach.

Third-Contact-film

The story follows Dr David Wright, a depressed psychotherapist, who embarks on an obsessive investigation after a second patient takes their life in mysterious circumstances.

Shot using only a handheld camcorder, a microphone and a light, the overall budget for the film came to an astonishingly low £4000. The film has been praised for its exceptional camera work in addition to its seamless use of colours, themes and sounds throughout. The actors have been credited on numerous occasions for their performances whilst the script has been commended on its intelligence.

The writer and director, Simon Horrocks, who also took care of filming, casting, production and editing, had raised the money to put the film together by working in a cinema. Later down the line, Horrocks would be making cinema history for having a film short costing virtually nothing, screening in a theatre alongside films made for £200 million.

This milestone moment in Horrocks career came together by a Kickstarter campaign, which funded the premiere held at the BFI IMAX in London. The likes of MacUser Magazine and Raindance Film Festival got behind the project and made donations towards the campaign.

Once the premiere had taken place the film received rave reviews from the likes of Faust, Critics Associated, Frankenpost, Movie Sleuth and The London Film Review. Third Contact also made it to the prestigious HoF International Film Festival in Germany.

Third Contact will be screening in various locations in the UK, Europe, Canada and America over the forthcoming few months.

We will have an interview with the director, Simon, soon.

The Life And Times of Nelson Mandela

“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

The people at Ad-Rank were greatly saddened by the passing of Nelson Mandela. His struggle is a true inspiration to us all, having spent 27 years in prison, Mandela emerged from prison as a leader of men who would inevitably take down the apartheid regime and become the first black president of South Africa.

Mandela’s story is a fascinating one that everyone can learn from. Despite terrible treatment, Mandela never treated racism with racism. His dedication to equality, democracy and education will no doubt cement him as one of, if not the most important figures in modern history.

His struggle has undoubtedly made the world a better place, and for this we are forever indebted. Being such an important historic character, we thought it would be a great opportunity to create an infographic to highlight his amazing life story.

Should You Go To Brazil? A Pondering On The Brazilian Wax.

Pubic_hair_style_Full_WaxThere is a scene in Sex & The City where Carrie and her friends go to Los Angeles, Carrie goes to a new beautician for a wax who ‘takes everything’. Later, when the girls are discussing their shock about being ‘totally bald down there’, Samantha tells Charlotte that her husband Trey, who has been having some problems in the bedroom, might finally be able to consummate their marriage as ‘he probably hasn’t been to Brazil before’. After this episode, the Brazilian wax became hugely popular. But what is it, where did it come from and should women really be getting them? Let’s find out.

With a Brazilian wax all of the pubic hair is removed, front and back, by waxing. Ouch. Some people like to leave a thin strip of pubic hair, referred to as a ‘landing strip’.

The Brazilian wax, apparently, was first named by the J. Sisters salon in Manhattan in 1987.

According to Wikipedia, some people claim that the concept of the Brazilian came from a letter documenting in 1500 AD, which read: “…suas vergonhas tão altas e tão çarradinhas e tão limpas das cabeleiras que de as nós muito bem olharmos não tínhamos nenhuma vergonha” (English translation: “their private parts were so exposed, so healthy and so hairless, that looking upon them we felt no shame”).

Brazilian waxing is the most controversial form of waxing, Brazilian waxing is unpopular amongst some women (and men), especially feminists who claim the only people who like it are men who want their women to look underage. Which may be why it is hugely popular with porn stars.

Model and Socialite Lisa B said that when she got a Brazilian at a salon in LA that “It was so painful I collapsed. I only fainted, but I was nearly carted off to hospital and I have vowed never to try it again.”

Other negatives are that it is a painful experience and if it is not done properly it can cause infection, prolonged bleeding or swelling of the area. It helps to take ibuprofen an hour before you have your Brazilian wax (this is what Madonna does).

The positives are that many women say it improves their sex life. If you get it done frequently then the hair will become weaker and the regrowth will become less as time goes on.

A Brazilian wax usually last between three to six weeks, but this depends on your hair regrowth rate. Some irritation may occur too, try some aloe vera on the irritated area. If you have ingrown hair (which will look like little bumps. They happen when the hair is not pulled out correctly. The hair curls back in on itself or grows sideways into the skin) you can buy beauty products that specialise in the improvement of ingrown hair. If you are confident you can even tackle the problem with some tweezers, just be careful.

The new rise in Brazilian waxing may be because of The Only Way Is Essex and the popularity of vajazzling, which was pioneered by Amy Childs.

Interestingly, New Jersey has banned the Brazilian wax for health reasons. This happened after two women in New Jersey were hospitalised after having the procedure.

If you want to have a Brazilian do so. Just make sure you go to a salon which is hygienic and knows what they are doing, take a painkiller before and make sure you are not prone to infection.

Fashion Classics: Converse

There are some things in life that are so classic, so iconic, that no matter how many people wear them, and no matter how much time passes, they will always remain a classic. Converse is one such thing. In fact Converse recently launched a new video with the tagline “Shoes are boring. Wear sneakers”. How right they are. Trainers with a suit looks awful but you can wear Converse with anything and still look smart. Think Lily Allen in her prom dresses and The Strokes in their suits.

I bought my first pair of Converse when I was a teenager and I am still wearing them years later.
classicconverse

Converse started in 1908, Marquis Mills Converse decided to start a rubber sneaker company. In 1913 Converse said, “Our company was organized in 1908 fully believing that there was an earnest demand from the retail sneaker dealer for a rubber sneaker company that would be independent enough not to follow every other company in every thing they do.”

That is the thing about Converse. They have stood the test of time. With great design and good quality they have entered the popular conscious. Even though they are popular they are still a great fashion buy. They bridge the gap between cool and popular. Frost loves.

Do you own a pair of Converse?

31IEYvjSZiL._SY300_This multitasking cream is big in Japan and has been around for 50 years. Yu-Be is one of the most trusted skincare brands in Japan. The cream is a bit like the Japanese Eight Hour Cream, it can be used on lips, face, hands, calluses, cuticles, dry skin, nappy rash and cracked heels. It is especially good on very dry skin. The crazy weather has been really drying my skin out and this amazing cream sorts it out.

This concentrated glycerin-based formula is enriched with vitamin E, B2, and camphor to soothe even the driest and irritated of skin types. A little goes a long way which makes it economical as well as brilliant. It also reduces scarring and fine lines.

It is a thick, yellow cream but it absorbs well and quickly. It smells medicinal to begin with but it does not linger. I love this Yu-Be moisturising cream. It gets the Frost magazine stamp of approval. It really works.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream | Beauty Review

elizabethardeneighthourcreamElizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is constantly on the major magazines best of beauty lists. It is the little tub of cream that has a million uses and is a favourite of celebrities. My family and friends also love it. Here is my review.

Elizabeth Arden says their Eight Hour Cream soothes minor skin irritation and is also for the symptoms of chapping, peeling and flaking due to minor burns, sunburn, windburn, scrapes, abrasions and cracked lips. Phew. That is quite a list. Created in 1930, it is Elizabeth Arden’s bestseller, with a tube of the stuff selling somewhere in the world every 30 seconds.

I use the cream on my lips and it is a great lip balm. I also use it on my hands which are really drying out because of the weather and it really sorts them out. It is great on dry skin, you can really feel it healing the skin. I end up using it on my feet too. It makes them really smooth. I also put it along my cheekbones to highlight them when I am going out. It is good on rashes and burns. In fact it solves pretty much any skin based problem.

I quite like the smell but it is not to everyone’s taste. I know Elizabeth Arden recently brought out a version that is scent free. I think Eight Hour Cream is a great all-purpose balm. An essential for every make up bag. I am addicted now.
