Augustus Harris: A Covent Garden Bacaro Launches

Augustus HarrisThis winter Augustus Harris arrives in Covent Garden. Inspired by the bàcari of Venice, it will serve cicheti and other bar snacks alongside wine and cocktails in the evening, and sell wine and Italian produce during the day. Named after Sir Augustus Harris, the 19th Century manager of the Drury Lane Theatre, the small and intimate bàcaro looks set to be an exciting addition to Covent Garden’s ever-increasing food scene.

Set over two floors and with 35 covers, a curved copper bar will display the cicheti available that day, and wooden shelves will be laden with olive oil, wine, pasta, biscotti and other Italian dry goods, all available to take home. Guests can sit at the bar or by the large windows overlooking Catherine Street and watch the world pass by or head downstairs where the walls are clad with walnut and large bronze mirrors.

Augustus Harris will offer a concise all-Italian wine list and a range of classic cocktails including; Americanos, Negronis, Bellinis and, of course, the Spritz. Guests can enjoy a selection of crostini such as; Capocollo with Artichoke, Porcetta with Taleggio and Herbs and Mackerel with Pickled Red Onion. Simple bar snacks will also be available, including: Fennel, Radish and Orange Salad, Anchovy and Butter Soldiers and Stracciatella Cheese.

Sir Augustus Harris, whose statue stands directly opposite, was considered the father of modern Pantomime and much loved for his lavish productions. His penchant for good food and drink led to him being known as one of the great bon vivants of the time.

Founder Charles McDermott sums its up: “I’’ve always been drawn to Venice and especially the bàcari – they don’t take themselves too seriously and have a great simple and honest attitude to food and wine. I wanted to create a place where you could enjoy beautiful ingredients over a drink and be drawn into the bàcaro experience.”

Charlotte Colbert: Writer, Housewife, Madness | A Day at Home {Ones To Watch}

For our Ones To Watch, Charlotte Colbert, is perfect; A fresh young artist who recently married and is also a screenwriter: her work is not just visually beautiful, it is also original, leaving you thinking about the her work for days after. Frost Loves.

A DAY AT HOME

New series by Charlotte COLBERT

Show: 29th November – 12th December 2013

39 Dover St, London W1S 4NN, UK

Charlotte Colbert (nee Boulay-Goldsmith

A DAY AT HOME, the new photographic series by Charlotte Colbert, playfully explores the relationship between the imagined and the real within the context of the home. She loosely parallels the writer and the housewife as figures struggling to distinguish between the two. Their identities dissolving within the huis-clos of their setting and imaginings. The black and white images, shot on medium format film and shown within the context of their original negative, are like surreal fragments of a dream or nightmare. Using long and double exposures as well as props and distorting mirrors, her camera becomes a portal into the mind of a fictional character.

“When I see the pictures I feel the woman is probably sitting in her clean and comfortable living room. The decay around her is existing solely in her head” Mila Askarova. Director Gazelli Art House

charlottecolbert image004

With playful nods to Bourgeois’ “femme-maison”, the visuals of ruins and fairy tales, Colbert questions the daily insanity of being human, more specifically within the context of the home. Shot on location, in a derelict house in Bethnal Green, the ruins become a character in themselves, the murky mindscape from which one cannot escape.

“Some photographers take pictures and others make them. Charlotte is most definitely in the second category, her pictures a gateway into… her search for meaning and her very special way of seeing” Dorothy Bohm, photographer and co-founder Photographers’ Gallery in London

Drawing from her screenwriting, Colbert’s photographic work is strongly anchored within the language of film and story-telling. Her pictures originally conceived as a series, a sequence developed in script format before being shot. A Day At Home builds on the story-telling language of her work. A very personal exploration of the relationship between the writer and the home, the real and the imagined, identity and the self. A study of madness, the fragility of our sense of existence, reality and belonging. The writer and housewife coming together in their sense of isolation, solitude and confinement within a space which both closes in on them but also opens up into an epic landscape of surreal imaginings. Here, the use of medium format film allows for the character to be overwhelmed, defined and even disappear in her surroundings. Only a couple of images are shot in 35mm, the ones exploring the relationship and the mystery of self-perception, the woman’s body rendered grotesque as the viewer is placed between the character and her reflection.

“A truly original visual storyteller her images are hauntingly evocative” Laura Bailey, Vogue

Charlotte Colbert’s work will also feature in the British Heart Foundation’s Tunnel of Love auction in November 2013. Her work Lips Study will be sold for the charity alongside other lots including prints by Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake as well as Cartier jewellery and clothes by fashion house Mulberry.

“Sometimes it feels like the thread linking us to the world is so frail that at any time it could break leaving us at the mercy of all our repressed confusion loss and fear” Charlotte Colbert

Charlotte Colbert (nee Boulay-Goldsmith) is a photographer and screenwriter based in London.

She has developed a distinctive narrative to her work, which can be followed from her large-scale triptychs, to her film-noir series and her more recent medium format stills.

In her first solo show, Stornoway, shown at the Wilmotte and Tristan Hoare Gallery in the old Lichfield Studios, she explored the concept of narrative within the still image, building around the sequencing of images in order to express a space and a time. She used traditional 35mm black and white film and showed the pictures within the negative, questioning the way one looks at photography and contextualising it as a record of events and patterns in the greater sequence of meaning. By turning the image around and leaving the negative apparent, she aims to allow the viewer to re-acquire the moment at which the photograph was taken and make the memory their own.

She then developed a series: D.R.I.F.T., an acronym for Do Reflections Imagine For Themselves? shown at Proud Gallery and at Gazelli Art House in which she created a loose film noir sequence within the gallery space, giving the viewer clues to construct and imagine a narrative of their own.

The Book of Mormon Review | Theatre

The Book of Mormon is much hyped. Every paper and magazine is full of glowing reviews and the word of mouth is strong. But does it live up to the hype? Well, yes and then some. This controversial musical from the makers of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, who is a co-composer/co-lyricist of Avenue Q, is actually one of, if not the, best thing I have ever seen in my life. While it could just comes across as mean and bullying, it is an incredibly smart musical religious satire. It will make you think, it will make you laugh and it will make you happy.

The Book of Mormon tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. Naïve and optimistic, the two missionaries try to share the Book of Mormon, one of their scriptures, but have trouble connecting with the locals, who are more worried about war, famine, poverty, and AIDS than about religion.

book of m2

The Book of Mormon was in development for seven years and has now gone on to great critical acclaim, winning nine Tony Awards,

I laughed all the way through and I cannot wait to see it again. It had funny line after funny line and not one weak scene during the whole musical. The production values were extremely high. Everything was done without compromise. The sets and costumes were fantastic. The script was ingenious, the acting, choreography, music and singing was incredible. What more can I say? This musical will go down as an all time great, it probably already has, you won’t want to miss it. A must see.

MR FOGG’S: Jack the Ripper at Mr Fogg’s
Harping back to the times of London’s first and most infamous serial killer, this Halloween will see Mr Fogg’s Victorian home become the harrowing site of one of Jack The Ripper’s terrifying tours.

From Thursday 31st October to Sunday 3rd November guests to Mr Fogg’s, temporarily not so humble abode, will be witness to a weekend full of immersive theatre and spine chilling skits and sketches. From abandoned and severed limbs discovered in trunks, to overly inquisitive surgeons at the bar and impoverished vagabonds skirting around the entrance, Phileas Fogg will indeed have his work cut out for him (literally) on this eerie adventure.

The weekend’s events will then culminate in a seated, theatrical spectacle on the Sunday evening, when 80 of Phileas’s nearest and dearest will be invited to watch the mystery of The Ripper unfold and Fogg himself will head up a Mayfair man hunt, in an attempt to apprehend Jack on his last jaunt, and save Bruton Lane from further fear of the night.

With groundbreaking discoveries and plot thickening theatrics it comes as no surprise that these terrifying tales will then of course also be reported directly from Mr Fogg’s by their daily, hand delivered paper, ‘The London News’.

The dress code naturally will be Victorian, and in this case best to stick to it as you wouldn’t want to stick out from the crowed and attract any unwanted attention…

Texas Joe Pop Up Restaurant At Brewdog Shoreditch Review

We traveled to Shoreditch for a taste of the US: The Texas Joe food is proper American food from the heart of Texas. Well, almost. Quite a lot of it is spicy, there is a lot of meat, and it all tastes and looks authentic.

photo 3 (4)

I had the sampler; beef brisket- cooked perfectly and very tender, smoked chicken-very tasty and well-smoked, Brewdog Shoreditch had to remove two doors to get the smoking machine in, hot link sausages- proper meaty sausages, taste great and slightly spicy, beef rib-the rib was huge and very well done. The sampler also comes with beans, chilli and sauce.

On the side we had chilli cheese fries and jalapenos stuffed with brisket and cheese and then wrapped in bacon. Rather stupidly, I underestimated how hot the jalapenos would be. The chilli is also hot (I know, obviously). My colleague had the hot link sausages, he pointed left to right to the food (chilli cheese fries, hot link sausages and stuffed jalapenos) hot, hot and hotter he said.

If you love meat and you love spice you will love the Texas Joe pop up restaurant. There are things that are not spicy though. Like the smoked chicken. The food is good and authentic. It is hearty, filling and very American. Very different.

On the side we had beer from Brewdog. I don’t like beer but I had a raspberry fruit beer which was actually nice. My colleague loved the beer he had, which can be seen below. Brewdogs ‘punk’ beer is anti the big brand generic lagers. Brewdog refuses to compromise on ingredients for its beer to save on costs just to boost profits. It shows in the taste as well. The beer is excellent and noticeably better.

photo 4 (4)Dragon’s Den star Joe Walters has today announced the launch of his pop-up Texan BBQ at BrewDog Shoreditch. The maverick cowboy will be cooking up a storm in the East London venue, following his standout pitch for his beef jerky company on the BBC 2 entrepreneurial show in August. Texas Joe’s BBQ will serve a full range of smokin’ Southern delights including slow-cooked brisket, beef ribs, chili-dogs and fresh cornbread.

The first Texas Joe’s BBQ will be hosted at BrewDog Shoreditch, and the company plans to open a series of standalone restaurants in the coming months.

The opening of his first pop-up BBQ joint completes a rollercoaster period for the cowboy, which saw him officially launch his jerky company and secure a nationwide deal with Sainsbury’s to stock his product.

photo 1 (6)Millions of viewers watched Joe pitch his beef jerky company in a rhinestone suit and Stetson this summer on the Den– a pitch that included a performance of the song ‘Put that jerky in your mouth’ by Sunday Best’s recording artists Kitty, Daisy and Lewis.

Joe secured a £50,000 investment from Peter Jones of immediate edge, although the Texan is now operating without the assistance of the ‘Dragon’.
However, BrewDog co-founder James Watt saw the potential in the Texas Joe’s brand and invested.

Watt was recently named Scottish Entrepreneur of the Year and BrewDog beers have previously been used in Texas Joe’s jerky recipes.

Texas Joe’s founder Joe Walters commented:

“Since appearing on the show, the response to our Texan jerky has been so phenomenal that we knew we had to expand our offering and bring a little South hospitality to London. With our first pop-up BBQ joint we’re giving people a taste of authentic Texan BBQ and we know they are going to love it.”

Chor Bizarre Celebrates Indian Cinema With Launch of The Basement

Chor Bizarre - Bollywood BasementChor Bizarre is a favourite restaurant of ours here at Frost. In fact it was one of the first restaurants we ever reviewed.

Inspired by the thieves market in India, Chor Bizarre, one of London’s iconic fine-dining restaurants serving authentic Indian cuisine is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a new Head Chef and a new menu. The restaurant has been refurbished and has now launched its new private dining area, the Bollywood Basement. To toast the centenary of the Indian Film Industry, Chor Bizarre has created this specially-designed decadent entertainment space. The room can accommodate up to 30 guests and can be booked for private parties and day-long conferences.

The Bollywood Basement is a ‘Bollywood-themed Party Room’ which oozes glamour in its Indian-cinema inspired decor. With jewel-like chandeliers and gold walls with opulent gilded frames and etched mirrors, this is the perfect Party Room to compliment Chor Bizarre’s eclectic menu. The Bollywood Basement is a passage into the world of Bollywood with walls dedicated to the greatest film icons. The much-loved faces of Hindi film heroes and heroines, villains, vamps and legendary romantic couples surround you. Along with the owner’s personal collection – most of the photographs of Indian Cinema icons are by legendary lensman, the late Gautam Rajadhyaksha.

The restaurant presents itself as an ideal location for fine-dining corporate events, full-day conferences, birthdays and other gatherings that require an extra glam quotient in a ‘Bollywood-bling’ surrounding. In addition to the Bollywood Basement, other spaces within Chor Bizarre can also be hired for exclusive and bespoke private dining, luncheon meetings, dinner parties and weekend events.

The iconic restaurant has teamed up with the award-winning Rhubarb Food Design to bring the very best cuisine, service and style to any special occasion. Chor Bizarre has partnered with Rhubarb for caterings at the V&A, Old Billingsgate and over 60 of Rhubarb’s other venues. The gorgeous furnishings are a collector’s delight, sourced from the various bazaars of India and tastefully arranged to please the eye. Vintage furniture, antiques, innovative touches such as a canopied old-world four poster bed for seating, combined with old-world memorabilia and heritage fabrics, create an arresting landscape for an unforgettable meal.
