Fempowered monthly period subscription box: £10 including a £3 donation to WaterAid.

This Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28th May, international charity WaterAid is asking the British public to help transform the lives of women and girls around the world by subscribing to Fempowered, WaterAid’s monthly period subscription box.

The box costs £10 a month and, with 100% of profits (£3/box) going to WaterAid projects, it provides a unique way for people to get eco-friendly, organic and plastic-free sanitary products delivered to their homes each month, while helping women and girls around the world to manage their periods safely and with dignity.

As a special offer, Fempowered is also offering new subscribers 30% off their first three boxes, using the code IMNEWHERE.

On any given day, 288 million people are menstruating. Yet one in four have no access to a decent toilet, and therefore nowhere safe and private to manage their period. Globally, 37% of schools do not have decent sanitation, meaning nearly 700 million pupils attend a school without a working toilet that locks. As a result, many girls skip school when on their period putting their future goals in jeopardy.

In many places, talking about menstruation is also shrouded in shame and silence. Often, girls don’t know about periods before they start, and many live in fear of rejection from their communities just because they’re bleeding.

Through purchasing WaterAid’s Fempowered bespoke period box, subscribers can support the international charity’s vital work to end this silence and discrimination around periods and help ensure all menstruating women and girls have access to the knowledge, facilities and materials to enable them to manage their periods and feel empowered to lives their lives to the full.

Therese Mahon, Regional South Asia Manager at WaterAid said:

Globally, one in four women and girls are denied access to a decent toilet and a private space to manage their periods hygienically and with dignity. Menstrual health requires access to female friendly toilets with water and soap available at all times. Without access to these facilities at home, school, work and in public places during their menstruation, girls are at risk of missing school, whilst women can miss out on the chance to earn a decent income.

“Periods are nothing to be embarrassed about yet there still exists a culture of silence and shame, which means the needs of women and girls are often overlooked, impacting their health and opportunities.

“Through Fempowered’s monthly period box, people can help us tackle stigma and discrimination and ensure those who menstruate can manage their periods with dignity.”

CanO Water Opens Educational Hub to Encourage Londoners to Think about Swapping Single Use Plastic Bottles

CanO Water Opens Educational Hub to Encourage Londoners to Think about Swapping Single Use Plastic Bottles 1 CanO Water Opens Educational Hub to Encourage Londoners to Think about Swapping Single Use Plastic BottlesCanO Water, the alternative to single use plastic bottles, is launching a new campaign to encourage Londoners to be more environmentally friendly. The #canthebottle education hub, in Old Street station, will raise awareness of the damaging effects of using plastic. The campaign encourages Londoners to visit the hub, and drop off their plastic bottles, receiving in return, a more sustainable can of water.

 The Stats

In the UK, we consume 18 billion plastic bottles a year and only a quarter of these are recycled.

38 million plastic bottles end up in landfill every day and drinking one bottle of water a day has the same impact on our environment as driving a car for a kilometre.

Plastic water bottles also contribute to several health issues due to BPA which is the industrial chemical that is used to make plastic. The ripple effect of BPA on our health effect your sleep, mood and has even been proven to promote risk of breast cancer cell growth.

A report published by the NHS reveals that it also increases risk of lower sperm count or creates an erectile dysfunction. By making smarter choices with such a simple swap, CanO Water is encouraging people to become part of a much bigger movement and come down to #canthebottle

The temporary space features powerful imagery, showing the current state of our beaches and oceans, contrasting with projected imagery from 2050, highlighting the devastating consequences of continuing to use plastic bottles. There will be educational talks hosted by a range of experts, as well as drop in opportunities to speak to the founders about their mission.

The educational hub runs until the 20th. Come down to take part in the #canthebottle campaign and learn how you can make a difference.

CanO Water launched in 2015 hoping to inspire other millennials to work together in hope to ban ‘eco-unfriendly’ products.  Determined to offer everyone an alternative to single – use plastic bottles, CanO Water created  a simplistic and stylish aluminium can. Aluminium has the highest recycling rate of any drink on the market, recycle your can and it could be back on the shelf in as little as 6 weeks. Cans provide a long shelf life by protecting products inside from light, oxygen and other factors that can affect taste, and product safety. The ‘can’ also has a smart releasable lid making it the perfect on – the – go product.

CanO Water has recently caught the eye of several high profile environmentalists such as David Gandy, Ellie Goulding and Dougie Pointer by offering a simple alternative that can really make a difference. Most notably, the brand was flown by Vanity Fair to feature at their prestigious Vanity Fair’s 2017 Oscar party. The state of California has banned plastic bottles, and the guest list for the event included well known sustainability personalities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep.

Ecover Launch Bottle Made From Ocean Plastic

We love environmentally friendly products here at Frost and this bottle of washing up liquid, made from Ocean Plastic, certainly fits the bill. There is a huge island of plastic in the middle of the pacific ocean and something must be done about that, and the waste in the ocean in general. ecoverEcological cleaning pioneer Ecover has launched its first ever bottle made from waste plastic fished out of the ocean. The Ecover Ocean Bottle, which holds Ecover’s washing-up liquid, is made entirely from recycled plastic, with 10 per cent of that plastic coming from the sea. The washing-up liquid itself has been developed with a special ‘sea lavender and eucalyptus’ fragrance – bringing the scent of the sea to homes across the UK without compromising on performance.

The company’s ultimate aim is to create the conditions for a systematic clean-up of the huge amount of waste plastic in the sea. Not only does the reduction of waste plastic in the ocean make for healthier, happier fish and sea mammals, it also has a direct impact on us humans as it would ultimately reduce the levels of microplastics in food, drink and other products, meaning we would eat more fish, and less plastic.

The new limited edition Ocean Bottle will be available from Tesco for £2, while stocks last.

• Fish in the middle depths of the Northern Pacific Ocean are ingesting as much as 24,000

tonnes of plastic each year3

• Reducing the amount of waste plastic in the sea would reduce the levels of microplastics in

food and drink

• Ecover wants to stop any more plastic from getting in to the sea, as well as creating the

conditions for a systematic clean-up of the waste that’s already there

Ecover will be using one tonne of ocean plastic, which it aims to increase to three tonnes next year.

“The scale of the ocean plastic problem is enormous – around 46,000 pieces of plastic are swirling around every square mile of ocean, and every year at least a million sea birds and 100,000 sharks, turtles, dolphins and whales die from eating plastic. There is no choice – we simply have to aim to clean up ocean plastic for good,” said Philip Malmberg, CEO of Ecover.

“Our ocean plastic bottle is just one small step on the way to solving the problem, but you’ve got to start somewhere – what we need now is to create a wider network of fishermen, recycling facilities and manufacturers to really make this happen. We also have to exploit existing supply chains and make it as easy as possible for manufacturers to use ocean plastic. At the moment the will is there but it’s just too much effort for many manufacturers to make it work.”

Plastic Bags To Cost 5p From 2015: Why It’s a Good Thing.

It has taken a long time but there will finally be a charge for plastic bags. Plastic bags are to cost 5p in England in a bid to discourage their use. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will unveil the plan at the Liberal Democrat party conference this weekend. Scotland will charge from October 2014 and charges for single use plastic bags are already in use in Wales and Northern Ireland.

environment, effect of plastic bags on environment, plastic bags to cost money, plasric bags, wildlife,

The charges will apply to supermarkets and larger stores and the proceeds will go to charity. Watch the video below to learn why Frost thinks this is such a good thing. Plastic bags have a bad effect on the environment and can kill or hurt animals.

Here are our top 5 reasons why it is a good thing:

1: Stray bags choke and strangle wildlife around the world
2: Production of plastic bags requires millions of gallons of petroleum.
3: Less plastic bag use would significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
4: In 2006, the United Nations found that each square mile of the ocean has 46,000 pieces of plastic in it. We don’t want to add to this.
5: There would be less plastic bags littered around, leaving the world a much more beautiful place. Over one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year and 3-5% of these are recycled

Cheap and Easy Ways To Be Greener

Doing your bit for the environment needn’t be boring and expensive. Here are Frost’s top tips.

1) Always turn lights off when you leave the room.
2) Don’t leave appliances on standby and don’t leave things plugged in when not in use. A TV on standby uses 40% of the energy it does when it’s switched on.
3) Only boil as much water as you need.
4) Have a bag for life. Always refuse plastic bags when shopping. They are not just bad for the environment, they also kill animals and wreck ocean life.
5) Turn the thermostat down. You can cut your heating bills by up to 10% by turning the thermostat down by 1C.
6) Fix leaking taps and don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth.
7) Replace old light bulbs with new, energy-efficient ones. This will save you around £37 a year on your bill. The old ones are being phased out anyway.
8) Buy less stuff. Really, consuming less is the best thing you can do for the environment. I always get depressed when I walk past somewhere like Primark and see all their cheap clothes that will last for a few months and then go to a landfill site. Make a stand.
9) Invest in draught excluders, get your heating checked by a professional and fit a central heating thermostat so you can only heat rooms that you are in. Any expense will quickly be recouped.
10) Use eco-friendly paints when decorating. There is a range of natural paint free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are known to cause allergies. They are non-toxic, made from renewable sources and avoid issues with damp.
11) Subscribe to The Ecologist. It’s cheap, you get a free gift and it will have lots of articles and advice on how to live a green life.

Frost Loves…Bobble Bottle

Here it Frost we love simple ways to be environmentally friendly and save money, which is why we love the Bobble Bottle. It filters water as you drink it. I first saw it on a film set (a place not so big on saving the environment, one film I did, the cast and crew went through 2,000 bottle of water EVERY SINGLE DAY) and instantly wanted one. I asked the actor where she got it and she said John Lewis, a quick trip to John Lewis confirmed that they don’t sell them anymore. So that left ol’ faithful Amazon.

They come in a number of different sizes and colours. The Bobble Bottle – Replacement Filters (Magenta)
last for three months and cost about £6.99 to replace. It saves you money on bottled water and you use less evil plastic. Each filter equates to at least 300 water bottles, A win win situations. I bought one for myself and for quite a few other people too.

The Bobble Bottle definitely gets the Frost stamp of approval.
