Last Wednesday saw 400 international guests from the worlds of fashion, art, music and the City, including The PNN Group’s Nasib Piriyev, Natalia Vodianova, Lindsay Lohan, Benny Higgins and Jack Guinness gather together to celebrate the inaugural Chovgan Twilight Polo Gala Dinner. This exclusive event took place at the renowned Ham Polo Club, only eight miles from Hyde Park Corner and the last remaining polo club in Greater London, in aid of War Child and The Naked Heart Foundation.

The event saw well-known players such as Pancho Marin Moreno and Ruki Baillieu play a high-octane game of polo by twilight (which resulted in a 6-4.5 win to Baku Guardians), before guests were seated for a sumptuous three-course gala dinner which consisted of aged parmesan with truffle honey, artichoke hearts and chargrilled peppers, tagliata of beef with a rocket, watercress and parmesan salad and meringue gelato cake with chocolate sauce and raspberries. Guests and VIPs alike enjoyed entertainment from the incredible magician Dynamo (including model and DJ Jack Guinness who was seen eagerly participating in one of Dynamo’s acts), followed by a live performance from electronic pop duo, The Alpines.

MINT Polo in the Park 2013: Frost Learns How To Play Polo

I have always been intrigued by polo. Playing a sport is hard enough but playing it on a horse seems almost impossible. So can someone who has never done it before learn to play? Frost writer James and I went to the Chesterton Humberts MINT Polo in the Park Academy day to learn how to play polo. Neither of us had been on a horse for a while so we thought it would be interesting!

First of all we are taught the moves by excellent professional polo players Andrew Murray and Rosie Ross. I don’t do well at first but Andrew sets me straight by correcting how I am holding the mallet and telling me to look at the ball, not straight ahead. Otherwise you top the ball instead of hitting it straight on. Andrew is a brilliant teacher and I soon find myself gaining confidence and hitting the ball properly. We are also told the rules of Polo.

After we have gone through the shots it is time for a riding lesson. Some of us are more nervous than others. I can’t remember the last time I was on a horse and neither can James. I get on my horse, Talia, and she looks at me as if to say “I have no idea who you are but you certainly don’t seem to know what you are doing.’

Catherine BalavageIn the photo above I look pretty confident but actually when I first got on the horse I was slightly nervous. This all went away after I got into the swing of it. We have a riding lesson which taught us how to make the horse do what we want, how to hold the reins, go left and right and cantor. In polo you hold the reins with one hand so you can hold the mallet with the other one. This seems difficult at first but it isn’t.

The day is an incredible amount of fun and I manage to show some authority and get my horse to listen to me.

After the riding lesson we play some polo. It really is addictive and a huge amount of fun. I want to do it more now. It is fun and challenging. I have realised that the most fun things have an element of scariness attached to them and polo certainly fits that bill. I love it.

James thrives and even wins the Most Improved Player trophy. Afterwards we are issued certificates to say we graduated. It was a brilliant day. I am hooked now.

The Duke Of Cambridge And Prince Harry Head-To-Head at Sentebale Polo Cup Sponsored by Royal Salute

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry demonstrated polo at its finest today, with the Duke’s team coming out on top, in front of a star-studded crowd at The Sentebale Polo Cup sponsored by Royal Salute.

Neve Campbell, Dougray Scott, Claire Forlani, Ellie Goulding and Greg James, were hosted by the luxury Scotch whisky Royal Salute, as they overlooked a spectacular game of polo at Coworth Park just outside London. The exclusive invite-only event raised funds for Sentebale, a charity co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, who also attended the event.

Prince Harry said: “I’m delighted to be at the second Sentebale Polo Cup in the glorious setting of Coworth Park. While my team didn’t finish as champions, it’s encouraging to see the level of support here today for this great cause that gives hope and help to the children of Lesotho.”

Christian Porta, Chairman and CEO, Chivas Brothers says, “Royal Salute is honoured to be associated with polo and more importantly today, with Sentebale, a very special charity that is helping and changing the lives of many in Lesotho. It’s been such a privilege to watch this incredibly historic and skilful game in the beautiful surroundings of Coworth Park.”

The exclusive Royal Salute Dinner and After Party, attended by The Prince, the Duke of Argyll, models Karolina Kurkova and Tallulah Harlech, model and actor Douglas Booth, and actors Toby Kebbell and Sally Hawkins, further treated VIPs to a special viewing of Tribute to Honour, Royal Salute’s finest and rarest limited edition expression of only 21 bottles. Adorned with over 400 black and white diamonds, Tribute to Honour is a collaboration with Garrard, the royal jeweler and fellow supporter of Sentebale.

The Sentebale event, sponsored by Royal Salute included an auction to raise vital funds for the charity, set up five years ago by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, in support of the neediest and most vulnerable people of Lesotho.

The Sentebale Polo Cup sponsored by Royal Salute further highlights the whisky brand’s growing commitment to international polo, with sponsorships of some of the world’s most prestigious polo events currently spanning China, India, Dubai, Brazil and the UK.

Royal Salute World Polo Series continues on the 18th June 2011 at a charity event held at the Beaufort Polo Club in Tetbury, Gloucestershire and closely followed by The Foundation Polo Challenge, at Santa Barbara, California, to raise funds for the American Friends of the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry on 9th July 2011.

The Polo industry get behind SANDS & bereaved parents {Charity}

The polo industry get behind SANDS and bereaved parents to help raise money for Sydney

Female polo players take to the field as male players take to shaving their heads for a good cause

On the 31st July and 1st of August over 20 all women polo teams will be taking to the field to play for the prestigious Women’s Nationals Polo Tournament, held at Ascot Park Polo Club in Surrey. To make this year’s event even more special, professional polo players Oliver Hipwood, Gaston Devrient, Richard Blake-Thomas, Charlie Wooldridge and Josh Nimmo will be attending the event to support raising money for SANDS a national charity, established by bereaved parents in 1981 to support anyone affected by the death of a baby; to improve the quality of care and services and to promote research and changes in that could help to reduce the loss of babies’ lives.

The professional polo players have committed to raising £1000 pound each and to shave their heads in the name of a good cause, while the event will be used to raise awareness of SANDS and help fundraise on behalf of Sydney. Organised by Janet and Pete who are local to Ascot Park Polo Club and avid polo fans, they are encouraging the polo industry to get behind the cause by getting everyone to get their favourite player to lose his precious locks by donating at www.justgiving.com/sydney-abigail-augusta-mcivor. Janet Jokat commented:

‘After 4 years of IVF Pete and I fell pregnant in May last year. Our hopes and dreams were shattered when our little girl Sydney was born still born at week 38. Rather than feeling the elation of holding a newborn we were planning a funeral for our daughter. Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity have been supporting us ever since the most tragic day of our lives, and continue to be an enormous support as we deal with the loss of our beautiful daughter Sydney.’

There will also be a silent auction taking place over the weekend; once in a lifetime experiences include £500 worth of polo lessons from Glen Gilmore (Australian Polo Captain) and a champagne helicopter tour over London donated by E.B.G Helicopters. Girls must-haves will also be included with a beautiful Links of London silver charm bracelet and charms, a fashionable handbag from Hide and an equine fashion shoot and makeover from Centaur Photographic.

A fashionable way to show your support is to purchase Sydney’s Fund Bracelet. Hand Made and blessed by Monks in Thailand this multi coloured cord bracelet will keep you safe, whilst making you look good and showing that you care. To purchase one of these please go to www.sydneysfund.co.uk
