A remarkable hands on charity: Forces Support by Margaret Graham

A remarkable hands on charity- Forces Support A

Margaret Graham was a Royal Naval service wife, back in the days of the Gulf War, and during that time was disturbed to learn of a girl on her service ‘patch’ whose husband was killed in the conflict. This young widow and mother of young children had to relinquish her service quarter in short order, and move into other accommodation when she was least emotionally and physically in a position to do so.

The council house she was offered was in shabby condition and the garden a jungle. It was the last thing this widow, and her children needed to face. If only Forces Support had been in existence then.

Frost Magazine decided to find out more about this inspiring charity and the work it does.

Forces Support is the only UK charity that provides a unique type of practical support to families bereaved throughout the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

The charity was established in 2010 by Bill McCance. Bill had searched relentlessly for a charity to provide practical assistance for the wife of a serviceman killed in Afghanistan and was amazed that this type of support wasn’t available anywhere. Strongly believing that practical maintenance work around the home and garden was vital and should be readily available Bill’s only option was to set up Forces Support.

Since then the charity has already carried out over 300 support projects for bereaved military families including for nearly 70 of the 453 families who lost a loved one in Afghanistan. Forces Support carries out projects for partners, children and the parents of the bereaved.

Initially the jobs were relatively small, decorating a room, putting up shelves or tidying the garden, jobs that the lost hero might have done themselves.  As word spread the projects have grown in size as the needs of the families became more apparent.

pic 2 Before & After1 (2)

Much of the charity’s work these days is carrying out garden improvements. A number of the families lose all interest in their garden and they become overgrown, neglected and a reminder to them of how they aren’t coping with their loss.

Forces Support team go in and makeover the garden for them, relaying patios, replacing broken fencing, laying turf and creating flower borders. The transformation can be quite spectacular. For many of the families Forces Support create a remembrance area with an arbour so that the families have a quiet special place in which they can sit and remember the person they have lost.

“We are so proud of the work we do for these families who have lost not just a member of their family but a hero too. The feedback we receive is so heart-warming and encourages us to keep going and growing. Many of the families report that the work we do goes way beyond just the practical nature of the work … but how it has significant benefits in helping them cope with their loss and aid their healing”, says CEO Bill McCance.

A study carried out by eminent specialists in bereavement study recognised the significance of Forces Support role in this field and identified their work as fulfilling a need and created a new form of bereavement care called Restorative Coping Bereavement Care.

Already the charity has carried out work for the families of Lee Rigby, the young fusilier who was brutally murdered in broad daylight in London in 2013, for the parents of LCpl James Ashworth VCone of only 14 to receive the Victoria Cross since WW2 and for the family of Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2011. His dog Theo died on the same day following a seizure.

Rob Fellows, Head of Major Gifts, commented “Readers can follow the progress of the projects on our active Forces Support Charity Facebook page, where we have 112,000 followers. Already we have aided many bereaved military families but there is still much for us to do and we always have a waiting list of families to help. We welcome donations, large or small, from anyone who’d like to support us helping more bereaved military families.”

KT (singer) and Evan (drummer) have a deep, personal connection with both charities.  “Our son, Hayden, spent the first 4 weeks of his life at Kosair before he passed away 3 months later.  The nurses there took excellent care of our boy and they were just amazing all around.  I’m so happy we can finally give something back,” – KT.

Advice For Female Entrepreneurs By Neeta Patel

neeta patel entrepreneur We have a great article from Neeta Patel, CEO of New Entrepreneurs Foundation.

Neeta is an experienced executive with over 20 years of strategy and operational leadership
experience in launching new ventures, business turnarounds and change and has a sharp focus on growth and revenues. She has a successful track record of turning ideas and concepts into tangible businesses. Her experience spans financial services, media & publishing, education, arts and the creative industries. She has also led two of her own start-ups.

Prior to joining the New Entrepreneurs Foundation, Neeta worked in Private Equity matching
technology entrepreneurs with investors. Neeta has held senior positions at Thomson Financial (Reuters), Legal & General PLC, Financial Times Group and at the British Council. She is an early internet pioneer having launched the first personal finance web site in Europe for L&G in 1996.

Neeta holds an MA in Chemistry from Oxford University, an MBA (Marketing) from Cass Business School, and a Sloan Fellowship in Strategy and Leadership from London Business School, where she was the winner of the PWC prize in 2009 for a consultancy assignment in China.

Here is her advice:

An entrepreneur needs to have certain key skills and personality traits in order to be successful.I have had many discussions and debates about this, and yet gender has never come up as a particular element. I am reluctant to single out women entrepreneurs in some ways because by doing so, the inference is that they need special help and advice. They don’t. However, there are a number of factors which hold women back when contemplating setting up as an entrepreneur, and I feel its important to encourage them to overcome these and discover how good life as a female entrepreneur can really be. Following a really inspiring female entrepreneur’s event we organised at the New Entrepreneurs Foundation recently, I wanted to share some of the wisdom from leading female entrepreneurs which may help anybody wavering over whether to take the plunge.

Women-led businesses add £70 billion to the UK economy. The latest stats from the Department
of Business, Innovation and skills show that the number of women starting their own business has increased. It still stands at only 19%, but is heading in the right direction. More encouraging is the fact that a quarter of new businesses which are two to three years old have been started by women.

So why do women need extra advice, if they are doing so well anyway? The reason is that not
enough of them are taking the plunge.

Lack of self belief seems to be one of the main reasons. Many women tell me they don’t think they will be taken seriously, that they don’t think they will be viewed as credible when they pitch for investment and that the business world is too tough to make an impact.

Having had years of pitching to some of the scariest venture capitalists around during the early stages of my career, I know what I am talking about when I say that success is nothing to do with gender but with how well you prepare and how well you know your numbers and your business and the market in which it operates.

Remember that women often have far better emotional intelligence than men, and this is very
useful as an entrepreneur in a whole host of ways including negotiating, picking your team and reading people and situations effectively.

Eleanor Mills is Associate Editor of the Sunday Times and one of Britain’s most high profile
commentators. She was fantastically inspiring to potential entrepreneurs at our event recently. She was adamant that women must support each other in business. There is, she says, a specific place in hell for women who don’t.

Geeta Sidhu-Robb, who trained as a lawyer, benefitted from the phenomenally successful Anglo
Scandinavian investments run by her ex-husband in the 90s but when their marriage ended, became penniless. She had three small children to look after on her own, but, armed with those qualities which mark out an entrepreneur she set up a new business called Nosh Detox, which she ran from her kitchen, delivering personalised organic food packages. She is once again very successful and urges other women to become self-sufficient. The only thing that gets in the way of your success is yourself, she maintains.

Adele Barlow, another panellist was so encouraged by the number of young, aspiring female
entrepreneurs who attended the evening that she wrote an excellent blog offering some great tips for wannabe female entrepreneurs, cautioning women to choose their female friends wisely, why you should ignore the nagging from your mother about your love life, and how to choose a good hero, or heroine.

Other advice that was well-received during the event included going for crowd funding rather than traditional methods of fund raising, and exhortations not to be squeamish about being supremely confident when pitching for money. It’s not showing off!

Finally, I would say think really positively about being a female entrepreneur. You have far more flexibility and freedom to run your business and balance your quality of life than you would have in regular employment and if you relish a challenge there are few things more exciting in life than making your own business succeed.

The Future of Meat

TOAST Presents:
The Future of Meat
5th April
Hawksmoor Guildhall

The team behind TOAST are back and this time they’re delving into the meatiest of subjects.
From what you read in the papers, carnivores of the future will dine on horsemeat burgers, grasshopper canapés, and mince grown in petri dishes. But sensational headlines aside, what is the future of meat?

thefutureofmeatTOAST have partnered with Hawksmoor and The Ginger Pig to bring together three experts on the topic: Hawksmoor executive chef Richard Turner, The Ginger Pig owner Tim Wilson, and Philip Lymbery, CEO of charity Compassion in World Farming and author of Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat. The panel will share their perspectives on the UK’s current relationship with meat, what a healthy, sustainable supply chain could look like, and what we’ll really be eating 100 years from now.

In association with The Ginger Pig and taking place at city steak-institution Hawksmoor Guildhall on Saturday 5th April, the event will not only bring together some of the meatiest minds in the business, but a bevy of delicious brunch dishes and an expertly blended Bloody Mary or two.

Kicking off at 11.30am, guests will enjoy that most stirring of brunch cocktails before cracking on with a debate led by three men who know a thing or two about meat.

First up, The Ginger Pig owner Tim Wilson, one of the most respected meat producers in Britain. Having won countless accolades, including Best Food Producer in the Observer Food Awards, his opinion promises to be as conscientious as his award-winning produce.

No stranger to the subject himself is Richard Turner, Group Executive Chef of Hawksmoor, who has planned and overseen the kitchens of all five of Hawksmoor’s London outposts, co-authored the Hawksmoor at Home cookbook and worked with Meatopia events, Turner and George butchers and PittCue Co. Stepping out from behind the stoves for this special event, Richard is sure to bring his extensive expertise to the table.

Last but not least is Chief Executive Officer of Compassion in World Farming, Philip Lymbery, whose book Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat was published earlier this year to wide acclaim. Having campaigned ceaselessly for the fair farming of animals since the 90s, Philip’s passionate views promise to set the debate alight.

Once those minds have been given a vigorous workout, guests will enjoy a sharing-style brunch cooked by the team at Hawksmoor Guildhall (using produce from The Ginger Pig of course!). Turning the concept of the Full English on its head, the spread will attempt to show how meat can be used sparingly to create a sumptuous feast. Dynamic yet delicious dishes will include pig cheek scrapple with grits, short-rib bubble and squeak, homemade baked beans, fried eggs, black pudding, hash browns and piles of toast with plenty of butter.

On sale now at http://www.eatdrinktoast.com/events tickets cost £40 and will include a Bloody Mary on arrival, the ‘The Future of Meat’ debate and brunch.

Romance In Modern Age: 52% of Women Would Contribute To Engagement Ring

The New Engagement Etiquette in the Age of Equality

TV diamond expert, Vashi Dominguez, Founder and CEO of Vashi.com reports that in a recent survey, over 50 percent of women admit they would make a contribution to their engagement ring to ensure they got the ring of their dreams. 52 percent of women answered that ‘yes, I would probably consider [contributing to my engagement ring]’ or ‘yes, I would definitely consider it as it would mean I could have the style and size I want.’ A further 7 percent of women surveyed had already contributed to their engagement ring. The statistics also reveal that a quarter of women surveyed would partake in subtle hinting, such as comments to their partner when walking past jewellery stores, to ensure they received the engagement ring they wanted.

engagementring

The financial crisis of the late 2000s caused employment rates for men aged 25-44 in the UK to decrease by 3.2 percent. The employment rate of women in the same age range dropped by a lesser 0.7 percent. Consequentially, more couples now share the cost of living; large expense items such as a new car, holidays or an engagement ring are now more likely to be a shared expense. Couples’ finances in general are now so interlinked prior to engagement that an even higher percentage of women could be contributing to their ring subtlety through linked finances.

The survey results also strongly suggest that engagements in the UK are planned (more frequently than being spontaneous) due to men’s financial circumstances and budget constraints. However, a relatively large proportion of men did not plan romance around the planned engagement – this is according to 24 percent of women who revealed their partner did not plan anything specific for their engagement, with another 13 percent of women stating that their partner did not get down on one knee.

In light of the survey results, Vashi.com anticipates a growing number of sales will be a result of joint decisions made by a couple. Post-survey, Dominguez stated: “These results represent a welcome shift in the way couples approach engagement now. The team and I notice more women being involved in the process compared to previous generations. Traditionally, men were the breadwinners and often as a result, the decision makers. However, we’re beginning to experience a new engagement etiquette. Our male customers are relying on their partner’s input too, whether it be financially or at least from an aesthetic point of view. Not only this, now vashi.com is receiving an increasing proportion of business from female customers.”

Vashi Dominguez continued, “women know what they want and our survey shows they’re not afraid to contribute to ensure they get what they want!”

1000 women aged 20-50 were surveyed UK-wide.

The First Horseman by Clem Chambers | Book Review

Clem Chambers book touches on news-worthy and relevant subjects as ageing, the possibility of living forever and the financial markets. A riveting and thrilling read, I got through this book quite fast. The way the book has been written flows beautifully. The First Horseman is fresh and interesting.

This book touches on the subject of what people would do to live forever. This is the fourth book in the Jim Evans series but you can still know what is happening and not get lost.

Jim Evans is a brilliant character and so is his butler, Stafford. Together they make a great team. Professor Christopher Cardini is a good character too. He has a sick and twisted mind, but is obviously a genius. Like all good books, The First Horseman has wonderful observations. I found myself turning the corners of the page to go back to certain parts.

I thought The First Horseman was great and I will now be catching up on the rest of the series, and the rest of Clem Chambers books. Clem Chambers is the CEO of ADVFN, so goodness knows when he finds the time to write books, but I for one am glad that he does.

The First Horseman by Clem Chambers

Some would give everything just to live one more year. To live another
hundred, some would destroy everything.

Jim Evans, retired super-rich trader, only wants to do good. He wants to
fund research that will save lives.

Professor Christopher Cardini has developed medical technology he says
will change the world. Through cell therapy, he can even rejuvenate the
dying.

Yet there’s something Jim will find even all his money can’t buy:
protection from a brilliant, but twisted, mind.

The First Horseman is the fourth book in the acclaimed ‘Jim Evans’
thriller series, by Clem Chambers. It focuses on what might happen if we
had the ability to turn the human body clock back?

If we were able to repair telomeres, the tiny proteins found at the end
of every strand of human DNA – we could live much longer, perhaps even
become immortal, like Hydra.

Yet when such a medicine would result in many more billions of people
fighting to live amongst ruins of an ecologically exhausted planet, what
would be the point?

Professor Cardini sees no point. He plans to deal with seething humanity
in a way that will both shock and horrify. Will he succeed in releasing
his tiny, but deadly ‘First Horseman’ and wreak bloody havoc on the world?

Not if Jim Evans can help it.

Shoreline Entertainment Announces “The Zombinator”

Shoreline Entertainment has picked up world sales rights for Sergio Myers’ THE ZOMBINATOR starring Patrick Kilpatrick and Joseph Aviel.

A fashion blogger documentary turns into a zombie horror nightmare when college students come face-to-face with the undead.  Their only hope of survival is a former soldier turned zombie killer trying to protect them from a mercenary working for an evil corporation who developed the serum that causes zombie-ism.

Director/Producer/Writer Sergio Myers’ inspiration for the story came when he visited Youngstown, Ohio.  “The vacant buildings are perfect backdrops for a zombie film.  Youngstown, like other towns across America, was hit hard by the constant decrease in the economy and appears as though to be suffering from economic depression.  Some of the people I spoke with feel they have been forgotten and living a life like this make them feel like zombies. The stories from some of the people I met inspired me to put a spotlight on this city.  So I created a movie centered on them to give them something that they can be a part of.”

Shoreline’s CEO Morris Ruskin says, “THE ZOMBINATOR is a resourceful doc-style horror film that stands out from the rest.  We know buyers will respond to the acting, action, and atmosphere, which all exceed expectations.”

Shoreline Executive Vice President Sam Eigen and Director of Acquisitions Melody Djavadi negotiated the deal with Myers.
