People talk about success a lot and it got me thinking: all of the things that have made me a better person, that have made me grow and become more successful, I learned from failure. I know what you’re thinking; what am I talking about? What can you possibly learn from failure? Well the truth is: everything.

Here are some of the things I now have because of failing: a successful online magazine, which I started after years of failing to work as a freelancer for the big magazines and newspapers, a fiance, who I will marry soon after failed dates and a failed relationship, a successful acting career after many failed auditions and rejection, a life in London after moving down once before and having to return home after running out of money the first time, finishing a book after five years of procrastination and false starts. I could go on, but what is clear, is that everything I have in my life I didn’t get the first time, or the second: I got it because of what I learned from failure and some good ol’ perseverance.

Here is what I learned from failure and how I applied it to my life.

Perseverance

I have had times when I failed so badly that I have spent entire days working from my bed. I have moped, I have even cried. But I always won in the end, or found something better, because I refused to give up. After leaving drama school I would commute between my parents home near Glasgow and London. It was exhausting and expensive so I decided to move. I went down to London on the night bus, I had no place to live, no job and I knew no one. I managed to find a studio flat in Highgate (£595 per month rent nine years ago) and get some ad hoc temp and promo work. However, I couldn’t find enough work to pay the rent and bills. My parents even had to come and take me back to Scotland as I had stuff in the flat and no money at all (thanks mum and dad!). I regrouped, found a job in Scotland that I could transfer to London and moved into a much cheaper house share. This time it stuck: I have never looked back and have made a life in London despite the fact that I knew no one in London and had no contacts either time.

Humility

When I was younger I wanted to be a writer or an actor. I have managed to be both now but when I first started trying to write I tried to get a job everywhere. I called up every newspaper near where my parents lived in Scotland, as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh. ‘Not only are we not hiring’, they said, ‘We’re letting people go.’ It was disheartening. I sent hundreds, probably even a thousand, CVs, letters, emails, calls….I failed miserably. I could not find a writing job in Scotland and although I could not see it at the time, it was a blessing. It also removed any resemblance of ego. Humility is a very important quality in life. You are not special, you are only one person amongst billions of others. A casting director also said this to a group of actors years later: ‘You are not special’. It’s true, and it helps to know it. The world does not owe you a living

Strength

A similar thing happened when I started acting. I left drama school and sent out hundreds of headshots and resumes to every casting director in the UK. I mostly got no reply, but after doing this a number of times, I started to get one or two. Getting an actor career off the ground is very expensive and I was faced with constant rejection. It took my years to even start getting good auditions and then even more years to start getting good parts. But I learned how strong I am, and that I just won’t give up. And that is all you need in life: strength and perseverance. This was especially true when I made my first feature length film as a writer/co-director/lead actor, but it is finished now and being edited.

What Works And What Doesn’t

With failure you learn what doesn’t, and what does work. You also learn about your strengths and weaknesses and can put all of that knowledge into action. I learned that cold calling people would only get me so far and learned to network. It made a huge difference.

Limits, And How To Pass Through Them.

The thing about limits is that you can push through them when you need to. I have done things I never thought I would be able to. Like performing on the West End, performing Shakespeare in the park, organising a launch party for this magazine pretty much all by myself and then managing to fix it when the venue pulled out at the last minute. The day before I had to email or call hundreds of people telling them about the change in venue and then was up late into the night making up hundreds of goodie bags. It was a tough and stressful time but the launch party was amazing, over three hundred people turned up and had a great time.

Of course, everyone has their limits but knowing when to give yourself a break and look after yourself is indispensable. Burning out helps no one. Then after recuperation comes the bounce back. You have to know when to give it a little bit more to achieve something amazing, and when to take some time out.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I would love to know your thoughts and what you have learned from failure. Please comment below or email frostmagazine@gmail.com

sundaytimesrichlist2014SIR PAUL McCARTNEY SHARES £710m FORTUNE WITH WIFE NANCY SHEVELL IN MUSIC MILLIONAIRES TOP 50

SIMON COWELL’S WEALTH IS UP BY £50m TO £300m

ADELE HEADS YOUNG MUSIC RICH LIST WITH £45m

ONE DIRECTION SHARE £70m FORTUNE

Sir Paul McCartney, now 71 and still touring, has added £30m to the wealth he shares with his third wife, Nancy, 53. With Shevell’s £150m stake in her family’s American trucking operation, the couple’s fortune stands at £710m.  The 2014 chart of the 50 wealthiest music millionaires in Britain and Ireland is published in The Sunday Times Rich List 2014 this Sunday, May 18.

Rising quickly up the list is Simon Cowell, worth £300m. His contracts for ITV’s X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent have helped to boost his fortune by £50m in a year. The success of the Ministry of Sound record label and brand has helped to add £70m to the wealth of Lord Palumbo, the Liberal Democrat peer, who is now worth £270m.

The combined wealth of Irish band U2 is down by £92m at £428m after the retirement of Paul McGuinness, their former manager, who now appears in the Music Millionaires Rich List in his own right with a £104m fortune. However, the individual wealth of the four band members, Paul Hewson (Bono), Adam Clayton, Dave Evans (the Edge) and Larry Mullen, has gone up £3m each, as last year they shared a joint fortune of £520m with McGuinness.

Mohammad and Kamaliya Zahoor, worth £300m, join the music wealth chart on the strength of Ukranian singer Kamaliya’s burgeoning pop career, funded by her entrepreneur husband Mohammad, who is a British-Pakistani citizen. Music mogul Roger Ames, who runs part of Live Nation, the concert search engine, returns to the list with a £120m fortune. David Bowie’s latest album The Next Day, which reached No 1 in the UK last year, helped to boost his fortune by £20m and for the first time we include the £15m fortune of his wife Iman Abdulmajid, to put the couple’s total wealth this year at £135m.

Take That singer Gary Barlow, who was worth just £30m in 2009, has added £5m to his wealth in the past year, bringing his personal fortune to £65m. We make no deduction to his wealth for the recent court ruling on tax avoidance until the matter is fully resolved.

Singer Adele, 26, heads the list of young musicians, aged 30 and under, with a £45m fortune, up 50% (£15m) on last year, with continued success from album sales.

She is £15m ahead of the highest new entry to the young musicians list, Calvin Harris. The Scottish hit-maker and superstar DJ has had no less than nine top 10 hits from his current album, 18 months – the most from a single album in chart history. Now able to charge a reported $200,000 for a night’s work as a DJ in Las Vegas or Miami, Harris formerly stacked shelves in Marks & Spencer.

The combined wealth of the five members of One Direction is £70m, making 1D the richest boy band in history from Britain and Ireland. Niall Horan, 20, Zayn Malik, 21, Liam Payne, 20, Harry Styles 20, and Louis Tomlinson, 22, are each worth £14m. In 2013, the combined fortune of the band was just £25m, with each member worth £5m.

The four members of Mumford and Sons, all new entries to the Young Musicians Rich List, share a £37m fortune. Marcus Mumford, 27, and his actress wife, Carey Mulligan, 28, are jointly worth £13m, while Ted Dwane, 29, Ben Lovett, 27, and Winston Marshall, 26, are each worth £8m.

Third in the list of the wealthiest young bands is Sheffield indie rock band Arctic Monkeys, with a combined fortune of £30m. Jamie Cook, 28, Matt Helders 28, and Nick O’Malley, 28, are each worth £7m, while Alex Turner, 28, who has other music interests, is worth £9m.

The four members of JLS, JB Gill, 27, Marvin Humes, 29, Aston Merrygold, 26, and Oritse Williams, 27, are each worth £7m, putting their combined wealth at £28m.

Sleepy Kitten Forced To Wake Up | Cat Video

Finally, a cat video that encapsulates how we feel when we have to get up in the morning.

It’s pretty cute but who thinks maybe the kitten should just be left to sleep? Even after a six-hour nap? Mundt might be the world’s sleepiest kitten but we love it.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 | Trailer Preview

At Frost we have been waiting impatiently for the new Hunger Games film. When Lionsgate released the trailer, along with some official preview pictures we were pretty excited. The first cast photo of Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin has also been released and she looks great.

An interview with director Francis Lawrence was also released, in which he discussed finishing Philip Seymour Hoffman’s scenes after his tragic death before filming had ended. Lawrence said: “We finished the majority of his work (before he died), I think he might have had 8 to 10 days left on our schedule. In most of the scenes, Philip didn’t have any dialogue. We are going to put him into those scenes, but we’re only using real footage. We’re not creating anything digital or a robotic version of him.”

Julianne Moore gushed about joining the cast in her interview (shown below)

“I’ve read all the books. I’ve read them all the way through, and I’m like, ‘I want to be in this movie!’ Clearly, that was the only part that I could play.”

Are you excited?

The Red Queens | Music Profile

The Red Queens don’t look like a regular wannabe pop band. They’re comfortably outside of the typical age bracket – frontman Darien Graham-Smith turns 40 next year – and their look can be described as “eclectic”, with influences ranging from punk to what one might call mature student chic.

theredqueens

“When we meet other bands, there is sometimes a bit of a coolness gap,” admits Graham-Smith. “They’re all nineteen, with fresh faces and achingly fashionable outfits. And then I wander in looking like I’ve got lost on my way to Waitrose.”

“But when you come to the game at a slightly older age you have a different perspective on that sort of thing. Some of the bands may look fantastic and unworldly on stage, but often the audience doesn’t really know how to relate to that. We come on as ourselves and I think we have a much easier rapport with the crowd.”

theredqueensmusic

“It’s a similar story with the music: when you’re young, you’ve got everything to prove, and as a result the material can sometimes be a bit wilfully extreme, a bit hard to swallow. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. But I think a lot of the best-loved songs – the really universal ones that hang around for decades – are your classic pop songs with four chords and a catchy chorus. And that’s more what the Red Queens are about.”

It’s a theory the band has developed over two and a half years on London’s pub circuit, during which time the Red Queens have grown from the original duo of Graham-Smith and bassist/vocalist Terrie McCann into to a five-piece line-up with guitarist Tom Derry, keyboard player Felix Kirsch and, most recently, drummer Bobby McPherson. In July, the group is heading into the studio to record their debut EP with veteran producer Paul Tipler (previous clients include Elastica, Placebo and The Wonder Stuff), and after that who knows what may beckon. Check out www.redqueens.co.uk for videos, downloads and live dates.

The Red Queens play The Islington, Tolpuddle Street N1 0XT on 29 May 2014. Admission £5.

Interview with Linda Barker

I had the real pleasure of interviewing the incredible and talented Linda Barker recently and she’s ones cool cookie. Fit as a fiddle and has real energy flooding from her. She told me a few of her secrets about how she says so young looking and vibrant. Here is our brilliant interview with the goddess herself!

1. If you could give your younger self any beauty advice what would it have been and why?
Relax it’s all going to be fine. Don’t beat yourself up about small insecurities. This is because looking and feeling good mostly comes from the inside and so being healthy and looking after yourself and not putting too much pressure on yourself is the best way to stay naturally beautiful.

2. I understand you love to work out but what form of exercise do you think is best for women to keep in great shape?
I love cycling and come rain or shine, summer or winter, I love to get on my bike. I cycle wherever I can – into town for a meeting, to the gym, or around the park with my family which is a good chance for us all to catch up with each other whilst getting some exercise. It’s sometimes hard to find the motivation to start up a new fitness regime. I prefer to think of exercise as something you need to incorporate easily into your life, as if it’s too difficult or too much of an effort you wont end up doing it!

3. Who do you regard as the most beautiful woman in history and why?
Liz Taylor, was stunning and very classically beautiful.

4. If you could have had a chat with anyone about their beauty, fashion and style who would it be. Anyone at all, it can be past or present. The type of person you would really want to pick their brains about all their little secrets?
Kate Moss, she is the epitome of style and cool and I always love the way she looks

5. With an enviable figure you could pull of anything but are you going to avoid any fashion trends this season or are you a vivacious give it a go girl!!??
No, I love fashion and love to be able to try out new trends. I am very excited to see Kate Moss’ new collection for Topshop as I love her style.

6. If you could have lived in a past era what would it be and why. It could be you love the fashion or the style of living and decor.
At the palace of Versallie in the court at the time of Marie Antoinette. The architecture and fashions were incredible.

linda barker

7. What do you think are the key healthy ingredients to glowing skin and vitality. I love juicing and think raw spinach is amazing for healthy skin but I want to know your secret ingredient!??
I take a daily health supplement drink called Revive Active, which I heard about through some friends of mine who had tried the product after suffering from a long period of illness and they were absolutely sold on the product. They said they felt healthier, younger and fitter than they had in years all from taking this health supplement once a day. They gave me a month’s supply to try and I was absolutely floored by the results. I started taking it in the winter when I usually have the odd sniffle or two, but I was completely healthy all winter while everyone else suffered around me. I’m 52 years old and I have really have noticed how my body has slowed down over the past couple of decades, but since taking Revive Active my energy levels have been through the roof and I almost feel as fit as I have ever been! It is all part of the healthy lifestyle that I lead – eating right and exercising daily, but I feel in the best shape I have ever been.

8. You are an avid runner and a massive inspiration, how do you keep motivated when you are so busy?!
At the beginning of my week, I make a pledge to myself about how I am going to fit exercise into my schedule, even during busy days, and this really helps me to stick to it. I love yoga and find that it is extremely relaxing and definitely helps me to relax when things are getting busy. I try and do yoga two to there times a week but if I can’t get find the time to get to a class, I will try and do some at home. In the summer, I’ll lace up my trainers and go for a run in my local park, or I’ll spend half an hour doing some sit up and squats in my living room! Anything goes really, just so long as I do something!

9. What is your biggest indulgence, from food to fashion and do you have one designers style that you always love.
Shopping! I love to go on a spree. Shopping for clothes, jewellery, healthy food and antiques – I love it all!

10. What is your signature dish, one that makes you feel wonderful every time you cook it. One that you know everyone loves.
I absolutely love Ottelenghi recipes – they use such fresh ingredients and it is very healthy. I also love anything made with quinoa, which is a very high protein grain and is really delicious

11. Where in the world is your favourite place to visit or the most amazing place you have been to that you would recommend everyone to visit at least once in their lifetime.
Bali was incredible, it was where I first went scuba diving and was very naturally beautiful.

12. Name one thing this year that you want to achieve. A goal that you personally want to aim for and accomplish.
I am hoping to do a coast to coast cycle with some friends, and I’m really enjoying planning it at the moment

13. Lastly, what do you do in your time off, to unwind and relax.
My schedule is busy and so I’m often not able to set aside time for a holiday. If I don’t go away, I still make sure that I set aside time to relax and chill out – maybe a weekend away by the sea, or meeting up with friends and family for a picnic or a barbeque. Summer goes by so quickly and so I’m definitely going to make the most of it!
Now ladies we all chat about looking fantastic and purchasing the latest wonder foundation to give you that youthful glow, but I truly believe its whats happening on the inside that is the important thing. With all the stress and strains of modern day living I think we all need a little TLC so after chatting to Linda (who looks incredible for 52 I have to say, she looks almost 20 years younger!) its apparent we need to take a leaf out of her book and look within ourselves, not just learning to keep it real and don’t sweat the small stuff but to really make an effort to do the best we can for our bodies, minds and most of all ladies give our complexions a helping hand.
