37⁰ Thermoband Maguari Review | New Children’s Safety Product

thermobandreview

The  37°Thermoband is a new handy gadget that takes the guessing out of milk temperature. Whether you bottle feed or express your breast milk. This is a clever flexible silicon band which will let you know when your baby’s bottle is the perfect temperature for feeding. It changes colour when the safe temperature is reached. very handy indeed.

It fits most glass and plastic bottles and the band can be personalised using a ball point pen. You could put your child’s name and any health or allergy information.  Information can be removed during cleaning, or made permanent by simply placing the band in boiling water for five minutes. Smart technology indeed. We were impressed. A time-saving gadget that makes a parents life a little bit easier.

Carole & Nadim Saad Authors of Kids Don’t Come with a Manual Interview

Carole & Nadim Saad Authors of Kids Don’t Come with a Manual Interview, parenting, kids, book, tips, advice, Tell us about your own parenting experience.

As a couple with conflicting parenting styles, we were torn between the gentler ‘laissez-faire’ approach and the more disciplinarian ‘tiger parent’ philosophy. What we really wanted was a way of parenting that could fit with our two different personalities, and allow us to parent in harmony, and raise our children to become happy and fulfilled adults.

So casting the parenting fads to one side, we turned to the latest research in child psychology and neuroscience and devoured hundreds of the world’s leading parenting books to find practical, tried and tested evidence. And we were delighted to discover that there really are clear, straightforward methods for achieving what we call a ‘balanced’ approach to parenting.

How is your book different from other parenting books?

Our book is different in that it gives the perspective of two different parenting styles, which removes the guilt associated with having to fit into an ‘idealised parenting mould’. It also equips parents with specific step-by-step tools that are based on the latest scientific and psychological research in childhood development. These tools are designed to support you through the immediate challenges of everyday parenting, whilst also meeting your long-term goal to raise children to become happy, self-reliant and responsible adults.
Interview With Carole & Nadim Saad Authors of Kids Don’t Come with a Manual parentingexpert

What are the biggest parenting challenges?

It’s difficult to answer this as it largely depends on your child’s temperament/personality and our own personality, as well as our individual style of parenting. We all encounter challenges so the key thing is to learn how to prevent such issues from happening in the first place, which is one of the key objectives of our book. Learning how to anticipate challenges before they happen allows us time to think, so that we can respond rather than react to our children’s misbehaviour. So we’d say that one of the biggest challenges that parents face is learning to be more strategic in their approach to parenting.

Is there ever a right way to raise children?

We are under no illusions about the reality of family life and have no wish to make it ‘perfect’. The fact is that there is no magic wand to make a family life perfect! However, with a bit more awareness of our children’s needs, combined with some simple practical trouble-shooting tools, we can go a long way to making a real difference to our children’s, our family’s and our own lives.

What are the dangers of over-praising our children?

Research suggests that overpraising our children and particularly using evaluative praise with statements such as “You’re smart” or “You’re good” can create a fear of failure, because children become afraid to do anything that could expose their ‘flaws’ and call into question their ‘talent’. This type of praise results in children becoming less likely to try new things or taking risks for fear of not getting it ‘right’ and so they end up missing out on essential opportunities to develop their confidence and sense of self.

How do you stop other relatives becoming too involved?

We think that other relatives will always get involved and we need to accept this as they think that they are doing this to help us. However, if we are more confident in our parenting and we demonstrate that we can manage our kids without overreacting, etc. then other relatives tend to find it impressive, then start making compliments and ultimately become much less involved.

Top parenting tips.

1. Focus on planning and prevention – instead of always being reactive.
2. Give empathy as often as possible – and do not discount feelings.
3. Model any behaviour you want to instil in your children – starting with respect and joy.
4. Use encouragement and descriptive praise – instead of general or evaluative praise.
5. Focus on what you can control – and don’t undermine your authority with empty threats.
6. Allow your children to have some control over their lives – offer them limited choices and ask them questions.
7. Allow mistakes to happen – they are opportunities for learning.
8. Coach your children to own and solve their problems – and they will become self-responsible.
9. If you have to deliver consequences, do it with respect and empathy – and delay them when needed.
10. When you say or do something you regret, ‘Rewind and Replay’ and ‘Repair’ – to keep a strong connection with you children.

What is the biggest mistake people make when raising children?

This is another challenging question as it’s difficult to identify one key mistake! However, one that is really common and can really affect children as they grow up is for their parents to frequently discount their feelings. This is something that parents do, often without even realising it. We tend to either reassure our children or try to ‘toughen them up’ – whichever approach we use, the message they hear is that they’re not supposed to feel the way they are feeling.

They grow unable to trust their feelings and cannot manage their emotions well, and this is an essential life skill. It’s far better to use empathy as a way of establishing and nurturing a bond with your child than try to ‘make light’ of their feelings, as this simply undermines their innate need to be listened to and have their feelings acknowledged.

Can parenting be made easier?

Our book ‘Kids don’t Come With a Manual – The Essential Guide to a Happy Family Life’ is designed to help empower parents to deal with most situations effectively. So that misbehaviour and the challenges that your children throw your way become opportunities for learning and growing rather than being stressors or negative experiences. Our main goal is to empower parents to deal with everyday parenting challenges without confrontation or anger, and raise their children to become the happy and confident individuals that they deserve to be.

Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar Review

Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar is one of London’s gems. Not only is it the perfect place to have one of their amazing cocktails, it also has a stunning location. Right near the London Eye, the view while you eat is something to behold. Which brings us to the food.

When you sit down you will be treated to one of Gillray’s famous Yorkshire Puddings. They are huge, delicious and come with perfect horseradish sauce. They also have cheese in them. My mouth is watering just writing this.

Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar scallops Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar mocktail Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar soup Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar wine

To start I have the Pan fried scallops with brussel tops, crispy ham and cauliflower purée. My colleague has the soup of the day: Cauliflower and truffle. The scallops are perfectly cooked, the crispy ham is just that and the purée gives a very different touch. I am unsure at first but it works. My colleagues soup is also delicious. I have a great mocktail, proving that Gillray’s can still deliver without alcohol and my colleague has a glass of wine that she really enjoys.

Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar burger chips Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar lemon sole Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar cauliflower cheese Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar sauce Gillray's Steakhouse and Bar view London Eye

For our mains I have the Gillray’s Steak Burger. It comes with chips and a wonderful marmalade. The tomato sauce and brown sauce is made especially for Gillray’s, it tasted great and comes in very cute jars. My colleague has the South Coast Lemon Sole with Parsley Butter. On the side she has the Cauliflower Cheese. All is superb.

For dessert my colleague has the Gillray’s classic Traditional Sherry Trifle: layered sponge fingers and red fruit soaked in sherry, covered with custard and topped with whipped cream. It is different, fun, mouth wateringly tasty and you even get the recipe to take away with you. I have the Chef’s Ice Cream. You get three scoops and I choose mint chocolate chip, valrbona dark chocolate and raspberry ripple. The ice cream is yummy. Just as I expected.

We finish with an English Breakfast tea for me and an Espresso for my colleague. They go down perfectly after our superb meal. I will definitely be returning to Gillray’s again. I think I will try their afternoon tea next.

Elstow | Music Profile

elstowIn July 2012 Jared Shaw and Chel Browne sent a couple of low-fi demos to Peats Ridge Festival on a whim. Having played only one live show together, their obsession with music was very much a private affair up until then, and neither expected the illustrious Sydney music festival to respond at all. But respond they did, and just a few months later the duo stood together on stage in the eastern-psychedelic-themed ‘Chai Tent’ and warmed an unsuspecting audience with hazy sixties-inspired songs about love, loss and death, blending delicate vocal harmonies with somber misty tones.

Borrowing the name of the building they lived in, and guided by a deep appreciation for the folk and psychedelic pop of the sixties and seventies, the duo quickly expanded to five members as they explored their wider musical tastes. Drawing on the psychedelic sounds of bands like Jefferson Airplane, Jimmie Spheeris, and early Pink Floyd, coupled with an infatuation with nineties alt-psych idols Brian Jonestown Massacre and Mazzy Star, Elstow started work on their debut EP in 2013. Released the following year, AS  THE SUN FALLS was five tracks of dreamy psychedelic landscapes fused with a moody folk sensibility. Both personal and surreal, bloggers described it as “music to lose yourself to,” and “a psychedelic romance.”

Harnessing an atmospheric and increasingly dynamic live set, the band spent 2014 playing all over their hometown of Sydney, winning over unsuspecting hearts one mind-bending show at a time. Their sound, which has been described as ‘neo-psychedelic-dream-folk,’ has been evolving slowly and surely, refusing to remain static.

In the late months of 2014, Elstow went back into the studio to record their new single, ‘Evil Dreams.’ Despite the sinister sounding name, and promises of a “very weird” video to accompany it, the new song is described by Shaw as “a little more upbeat than the EP,” and combines Elstow’s dreamlike psychedelic overtones with a breezy sunshine-laden chorus. ‘Evil Dreams’ swings between verses of doubtful self-reflection and a chorus of daydream surrender. Carefully woven vocal harmonies float amidst an abundance of tremolo guitars, delay, and crisp tambourines; ‘Evil Dreams’ is as ambitious as it is timeless.

Restaurant Review: Southern Eleven, Spinningfields – Manchester

I’ve visited Southern Eleven before for drinks but never to eat. I’m not sure why but it is never somewhere that automatically springs to mind when thinking of where to go and eat. So when they asked me to visit and review for Frost I was quite excited to see what they were really like.

Located next to Pure Gym in the upmarket Spinningfields area you are promised Southern style charm with locally sourced slow cooked meats in a more relaxed setting than other restaurants in the Spinningfields area, I mean look at the amazing bear who greets you on your way in!

DSCN2070

The atmosphere is relaxed with low lighting and café style tables perfect for dining with family or in a big group. There is very little mobile reception in here and the wifi access is very hit and miss. When trying to keep up to date with social media and work commitments this can be frustrating.

DSCN2017 DSCN2059

Onto the food and we went for the taco tray to share as our starter. The popcorn chicken with blue cheese was my favourite, the chicken with a lovely heat from the spice and the blue cheese giving it a creaminess. The pulled pork with red cabbage was also tasty as I am a huge fan of pickled cabbage! The short rib with sour cream was a little dry and would have benefited from more sour cream. At £8.95 I thought they were quite expensive for the size of the portion but a nice way to get our tastebuds going before our main course.

DSCN2025

Onto the mains and I chose the pulled pork mac n cheese whilst my friend decided to try one of the meat plates with ribs, pulled pork and brisket which came with fries, slaw and sauces. As a huge fan I also ordered some corn bread to share, it was too tempting not to.

DSCN2038 DSCN2034

The mac n cheese was the star of the show. A lovely lightly toasted crust with soft macaroni bound in a light cheese sauce with chunks of soft pulled pork. So many versions of this are thick and gloopy but this one has lots of sauce, perfect for dunking the corn bread. The corn bread was a little dry but had a lovely texture and soaked up the cheese sauce beautifully. The meat plate was a bit disappointing as a whole. The ribs were perfectly slow cooked with the meat falling off the bone and the brisket soft. Unfortunately because they had been piled together the flavours had merged so it was difficult to identify the individual flavours. The slaw was light and fresh whilst the fries were a bit dry. The meat would have benefited from being served separately rather than all together.

DSCN2063

Onto dessert and the churros were pretty good. Slightly underdone so still a bit too soggy in the centre yet with a lovely crust on the outer to make up for it. The chocolate dipping sauce was rich and not overly sweet helping to balance the dish out. There was a lot of them too which is always a bonus. The pecan pie sundae would have benefited from more of the dark rum caramel but then I am a sucker for rum so this will always be the case. The pecans were lovely giving the ice cream a nice crunch. This was a nice dish and something I haven’t seen anywhere else in Manchester.

Unfortunately for me Southern Eleven is missing something. The majority of the dishes are being done elsewhere for less. That could be because of the location in the affluent Spinningfields area and I think if Southern Eleven can stick to its roots and find a niche they’ll be a leader in the area.

Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar Review

Few building in London are as iconic as Somerset House. Staggering in its beauty, it really is the perfect setting to eat, drink and be merry. We headed to the Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar. It has only been open since November in the New Wing.

The Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar is as beautiful and classy as the rest of the building. It is the perfect setting for dining and catching up with friends.

Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar cola Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar wine

We take our seats and decide on the pre-theatre dining menu. This consists of a sharing board of Mushroom on toast, Beefeater salmon with pink radish, Egg and ham on toast and Fudge. It costs £25.50 per couple and comes with a glass of Prosecco per person. It is available Mon-Fri 5pm-7pm and Saturday all day.

Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar salmon Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar mushroom toast Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar review] Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar fudge

The beefeater salmon with pink radish is glorious, just very superior salmon. It goes well with the radishes, the egg and ham on toast is delicious and the parma ham is perfectly seasoned. The mushroom on toast is also good and has cheese on top. The bread itself is good and everything works well together. The fudge is also yummy. It is in a bag for the pre-theatre crowd, making it handy to take away with you.

I had some curiosity cola and my colleague had a glass of prosecco. We loved the food, the ingredients were very high quality and everything was perfectly seasoned. Everything worked well together and this was definitely a first-class meal. Our only complaint is that there was not enough of it and we were still hungry after the meal.

The Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar also have an a la carte menu. The service is good, the food is superb and the setting is wonderful. I can highly recommend it.
