Top 10 things women want to do with a free day

puppy, sleeping puppy, puppies, cute animalsIt appears that during the average working week women clock in at least 20 per cent more hours than men.
A major study claims that because of housework and childcare, career women are working much longer hours than men.
A study by researchers at Cambridge University in England has found that women who work outside the
home still do the bulk of the domestic chores, including picking the kids up from school, helping with
homework, cleaning and cooking. So even though men tend to spend more hours at the office, often
because they are in management positions and earn higher salaries, it is the women who are actually on-
the-go for longer.
It’s certainly not 50-50 in terms of work on the job and at home then.

A recent survey undertaken by luxury tanning brand Vita Liberata attracted thousands of entries. Their question? Purely and simply, what would a woman do if they had 24 hours entirely to themselves, with no responsibilities, no financial issues, no worries at all.
Top 10 responses:
1. 78% were so knackered all they wanted was a day to rest
2. Shopping! No surprises there ..
3. 8% wanted to go for cocktails
4. The top 3 destinations to spend a day ‘out’ are New York,
London or Paris
5. Go to Nashville and visit the home of Elvis Presley
6. Watch Barcelona football team – at their home ground
7. 98% chose not to include their husband in their day off
8. Do makeup on a Hollywood film set
9. 5% wanted an active day – bungee jumping, skiing, white
water rafting, being the most popular
10. Drive the 5 fastest cars in the world
* Taken from Vita Liberata’s Liberation Day Survey
Most surprising result is that all most women* want is a Spa Day… time to themselves, to rest, relax and be pampered. Lack of imagination or just sheer exhaustion??

How to Achieve the Perfect Autumn Landscape Shot

It’s that time of the year again when the days start to shorten and the green leaves of summer begin to turn and fall – the perfect time to get that striking landscape snap. Whether you’re a novice or professional photographer, the experts from SmugMug have compiled their top 10 tips on how to achieve that perfect landscape shot.

How to take the perfect autumn landscape shot.

1.       Explore your surroundings – Part of the enjoyment of landscape photography is being out in nature. More often than not, guidebooks miss those special secret spots so make sure you spend time exploring and observing your surroundings to get the lay of the land. For example, how the sun moves at different times of the day, or the different points of view.  It will take time and patience to discover the perfect scene.

2.       Get in position – Once you’ve discovered your scene, find out where you should shoot from to get the best results. Working out where the sun will rise and set, and the sun’s position in relation to you and your landscape, will ensure you’re in the right place at the right time.

3.       Try another position – After you’ve got your shot, walk or drive closer to the subject and try again. Proximity will make the subject strike you in a different way.

4.       Think of your foreground – One element that can set apart your landscape shots is the foreground. By placing points of interest in the foreground, you allow those viewing the shot a way into the image as well as creating a sense of depth in your shot.

5.       The rule of thirds – If you’re new to landscape photography, try using the ‘rule of thirds’. Simply divide your frame into imaginary thirds on both the horizontal and vertical axis. Now simply place areas of interest at the points at which the lines intersect, or along one of the lines. This will give the composition of your shot more tension, energy and interest than simply centring the subject would.

6.       Scale – When your subject is of unspecified size. For example, a mountain, or a body of water. Add a sense of scale by including something of known size, such as a car, tree or animal. This will help the viewer understand what they’re looking at.

7.       Preparation is key – Rain can damage or ruin your camera, but it can also make for a great picture. Make sure you always carry a good umbrella, a box of plastic bags, a small tarp and a towel with you to to ensure your equipment stays safe.

8.       Layer up – Add multiple layers to your composition beyond the main subject, such as foreground and background elements to create interest, depth and texture.

9.       Golden hours – Always try to shoot before sunrise or after sunset—the times when the light is best. Use the harsher light of midday to scout out your location.

10.   Do your research – If you are staying in one place for several days, check out the long-range weather forecast and plan your shoots around the weather that is best for specific subjects.

Welcome back to Manchester’s most notorious estate for the last ever epic 14-part series, out now.

celebratory, defiant and unapologetic as ever. With the hilarious energy of the stalwarts thriving in

the double dip recession – always a law unto themselves, always with family at their core, living in

their robust micro climate.

The final series goes out with a bang when Jamie Maguire (Aaron McCusker) discovers he isn’t a

pure blood Maguire and introduces the estate to his Muslim half-brother Kassi (Jalaal Hartley – The

Borgias) and his Jewish cooking mad wife Esther (Isy Suttie – Peep Show) as they disembark on the

estate with their three feral children in tow.

The comings and goings on the Chatsworth Estate, and the exploits of feckless Frank Gallagher, his

errant brood of children, and the other colourful characters living on the estate have provided plenty

of entertainment over the past 10 years. Channel 4’s longest running series has been key to the

careers of many British screen stars including James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff and Maxine Peake,

not to mention the team of high profile writers and directors.

Series 11 is a suitably shameless ending for the final chapter of the multi-award winning

iconic drama series. Or why not relive the ten year masterpiece from the very beginning

with the 1-11 boxset? Out now.

MonaLisa Twins | Music Profile

MonaLisa Twins have made an amazing collaborative time-lapse music video

The band said, “We were thinking about a creative way to get lots of people involved in a connecting, artistic project, all in the spirit of the song title “When We’re Together”. We were curious about how many people would pause their activities out of their love for adventure to be part of a spontaneous happening. We installed a canvas on the walls of Stables Market in Camden, London’s world-famous art district. We ourselves started with a big red heart in the center. Pedestrians joined in and added their ideas and colors to the painting.
girls with guitars, MonaLisa Twins, music, music profile,
We were overwhelmed by the dedication of stangers, joining in to
create a collective, beautiful artpiece together. Businessmen, cyclists, musicians, children and elderly people alike were painting side by side, laughing and sharing their thoughts and even very personal stories. This day was just more evidence for us how much the arts are able to lift spirits and make people happy. It was only later that we realized that the project also fitted quite well with our (band) name MonaLisa. Artistic all the way ;)”
The painting from the video is up for auction here.

Check out their other recent video with a distinctly different, more sombre feel for “The Wide, Wide Land”, a song written as a musical farewell for their Grandmother, who suffered with Alzheimer’s for many years.

Band: MonaLisa Twins
Location: Austria, UK
CD: “When We’re Together”

Donovan, The Monkeys, Bob Dylan, Simon&Garfunkel, Pink Floyd
Members/Instruments:
Mona Wagner – Vocals, Guitars, Blues Harp
Lisa Wagner – Vocals, Guitars, Ukulele
The Beat is back! The MonaLisa Twins are one of the very few modern bands
who write original songs in the 60’s Beat music tradition, reviving the
genre with a modern, fresh twist without sounding pop-ish or trivial. On
their debut album “When We’re Together” they present the finest Rock ‘n’
Roll and Beat music, skillfully venturing out in Psychedelic, Folk and even
Latin genres, inspired by the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Simon &
Garfunkel. Their signature features are polyphonic harmonies and a wiry,
bright guitar sound. The even mix of fun and depth in their music and lyrics brings back the spirit of this time and therefore speaks to a wide range of international audiences.
While listening to and playing all different kinds of music genres in their
youth the girls stayed with the 60’s songwriting style, something they think is way too much neglected these days: “We aim to write songs which we ourselves would like to listen to and we always loved the spiritual,
humorous and true-to-life mindset of the 60’s. However we aren’t nostalgic
about it or trying to be “retro”. We simply believe that something great had been started in this era that is worthy of being continued.”
The core of the band are two 19 year old girls, actual twins named Mona and
Lisa. Originally from Austria, they toured extensively, performing in the USA, Australia and UK in their teens. They started out with cover songs on YouTube and released two CDs with covers in 2007 and 2008. At 16 they
decided to go for a professional music career and began to record their debut album “When We’re Together” which was released in 2012. Since then they’ve played many live shows in small to medium-sized venues and festivals in Continental Europe, playing to new audiences and raising interest for their own music. Besides being played on Austrian radio stations they are increasingly conquering the Anglo-American music markets with regular airplay and doing radio and TV interviews in the USA and UK as well. They also produced a decent number of high quality music videos which have garnered a total of nearly 2 million views and over 4,500 subscribers on YouTube so far.
Moving forward, for the rest of 2013 Mona and Lisa are dedicated to work on releasing more music videos and writing new songs.
