Stand Up… You’re Rockin’ This Boat! Brian May Attends Royal Caribbean’s Production of ‘We Will Rock You’ On-board Inaugural Anthem Of The Seas Cruise

Imagine this… stepping out of your suite on-board Royal Caribbean’s inaugural sailing of Anthem of the Seas two hours before curtain-up, closing the door and swinging around to be face-to-face with Brian May, snuggling lovingly into the

neck of his partner, Anita Dobson, as they walked along the corridor, only for her to turn and look me straight in the eye and say, in her Eastenders cock-er-ney accent…

“‘ello darlin’, you alright?”

At that point, I knew this performance was going to be special… the cast were playing, tonight, to the Master himself.  This company had to nail it.11140331_10152954323263031_2502614644469839633_n[1]

I sit in the front row, I always sit in the front row, perhaps too close but I need to feel the emotion and the effort put in by the cast.  Months of rehearsal, careful application of costume and make-up cannot be wasted on a seat further back in the auditorium… just a general synopsis is not my style, I have to feel a production… cast vs me – game on.

Transferring a production from the West End to a cruise ship is no mean feat, the word ‘logistics’ is holy.  Fact one – you’re in the middle of the ocean, if anything ‘kicks off’, evacuation is gradual and there’s nowhere to run.  Fact two – the dressing rooms for the cast and the storage for the sets have to be compact and very bijou.  Fact Three – your audience is multi-cultural upon each sailing – colloquial ad-libs and audience cognition of dialects and comedic one-liners differs, depending on your demographic.  I could punctuate with more ‘facts’, but you get the gist… it’s difficult and this performance had to prove it was possible to bring one of the most successful productions from the West End to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines..

I sat with Brian May’s eyes searing deep into my neck, haunting Mercury tones in my ears, the curtain went up…

We Will Rock You (often abbreviated as WWRY) is a musical based on the songs of Queen with a book by Ben Elton, a storyline set 300 years in the future. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and does the same. Musical instruments and composers are forbidden, and rock music is all but unknown.

Although the musical was at first panned by critics, it has become an audience favourite, becoming the longest-running musical at the Dominion Theatre, celebrating its tenth anniversary on 14 May 2012.  The London production closed on 31 May 2014 after a final performance in which Brian May and Roger Taylor both performed.

I have to open with the Royal Caribbean band, they had this sewn up, the cast were in capable hands and nurtured through every track.  Impeccable to the point of perfect interpretation of the true heartbeat of Queen, difficult to acclaim highly enough.

Amanda Coutts played Scaramouche, a sarcastic, hard-bitten cynical girl and Galileo’s love interest. A rebel, deeply introverted and complex, a goth teenager, an awkward loner, a misfit. She uses her self-deprecating wit to cover her sensitivity and vulnerability, brittle, hard and bitter, headstrong and stubborn, defensive. Amanda’s Romford-esque delivery enthralled the audience, perfect timing, cutting script, all made sense, making the character charmingly sweet with a vicious edge.

Killer Queen (Allyson Kaye Daniel), the villain, an iconic figure, ruler of the world with an amazing rock/soul voice. She’s camp, sexy, voluptuous, feisty, funny, powerful and power crazy, ruthless, the BOSS. Every man’s dream of an older woman with a strong bi-slant.  Allyson carried this character to the extreme, gorgeous and so 80’s-inspired… sexy!

VIS_3158

Khashoggi (Preston Hammond), Killer Queen’s second-in-command, the head of Globalsoft’s police and carries out Killer Queen’s dirty work. A smooth operator, ruthless and heartless, attractive, sophisticated, intelligent, sinister, cruel, cold but charming.  Preston’s interpretation of this character had me enthralled, secretly my favourite.  Enticing with a ‘Las Vegas’ kind of spin. I wanted to know more about this character and doors were left open… very enticing. VIS_3178

‘Pop’ doubles as the Rebel Leader of the Bohemian movement, a rather pompous figure who has made himself an expert on the legend of rock and is perhaps a bit too pleased about it!  An elderly librarian trying to figure out the exact date the music died. Bar man, ex-rebel, a hippie stand-up comic, a cross between George Carlin and Robin Williams. Pop is worldly with a natural curiosity and passion for life and music.

I met Kevin Kennedy back in January when he was appearing in Norwich Theatre Royal’s pantomime production of ‘Peter Pan’, playing the evil Captain Hook, and it was during our conversation that he enlightened me of the forthcoming production aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Anthem of the Seas, playing the part of Pop, following his highly successful run at the Dominion Theatre, London.

The words ‘Kevin Kennedy – Family Man’ run through the core of Kevin like a Blackpool stick of rock – his family values are never far away from his thoughts and the household of three giddy females rocks his world.  A Mancunian, married to Clare, became infamous as  the character ‘Curly Watts’ in ITV’s Coronation Street, falling in and out of skittish catastrophes, including the scatterbrain marriage to Raquel Watts (Sarah Lancashire).  Kevin appeared for 20 years in the UK’s longest-running television soap as the UK’s favourite supermarket-worker.  Kevin and Claire now live in Brighton with their two beautiful girls, and promoting their alcohol recovery charity Addiction Management UK Limited.  As I disembarked, the family were due to join Kevin for a few days, and to say he was excited… an understatement.  Life on the floating city makes you value your family and home, Kevin was certainly feeling the draw.

If the costumes didn’t give it away, then the music certainly did.  So slash up your pussy bows and consign your neat little A-line skirt right to the back of the wardrobe… the 80’s aggro chic, cod mod, naughty fashion and punk frock – aggro chic, was played out  with a vengeance.  The costume design of the production thrived on schizophrenic tension and the ‘up yours’ style was the perfect Hyde to ladylike chic’s Jekyll.  Inky black ‘goth’ lips, distressed suits and long silver chains, spiky hair and heavy black eyeliner… every street style from punk to goth to mod to rudeboy to biker was plundered with all the enthusiasm of Sid Vicious raiding the minibar at the Chelsea Hotel.

The supporting cast consolidated the production.  Every conceivable angle, from the audience’s point of view, was covered.  Enthusiasm, professionalism, vocal co-ordination and costume intricacy was accomplished to perfection.

Galileo (Alex DeLeo), a young man, a rebel and the central character.  Attractive and sexy, vulneraable, sensitive and doesn’t really fit in, restless, headstrong and stubborn.  Tense, living on his nerves, a dreamer.  Alex vividly portrayed a young man, a dreamer, on a mission to accomplish something with his life, trying to find the right way to fulfil his dreams.  This character required strength but with a thread of vulnerability which Alex completely radiated.

The production, produced by Alex Marchant, directed by Tony Edge with Tim Hammond as Musical Director, under the management of Nick Weir, Vice-President of Entertainment for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, achieved a challenging goal, to put a superior show on the high seas, achieved previously so successfully on the safe ground of blighty, without running adrift with logistical anomalies associated with cruise productions.

And what did Brian think?

He joined the cast on-stage at the end of the performance and was visibly moved … the new production of ‘We Will Rock You’ is in safe hands.

How To Read Music: This Video Shows You How

National_Anthem_of_the_Islamic_Republic_of_Iran(SHEET_MUSIC)Ever aspired to be a musician? Are you musician who wants to be able to read music? Well, look no further. Those awesome people at TED-Education have a brilliant video from Tim Hansen on How To Read Music, and it is a lot easier than you think.

Like an actor’s script, a sheet of music instructs a musician on what to play (the pitch) and when to play it (the rhythm). Sheet music may look complicated, but once you’ve gotten the hang of a few simple elements like notes, bars and clefs, you’re ready to rock. Tim Hansen hits the instrumental basics you need to read music.

Mylets | Music Profile

Mylets Music Profile
Artist: Mylets
Album: Arizona
Label: Sargent House
Release date: 20th April 2015

Under the moniker Mylets, Henry Kohen takes on the roles of several musicians at once. The wunderkind guitarist who, at 17, became the youngest artist signed to Sargent House has since established his reputation as an awe-inspiring and agile performer, playing across North America and Europe multiple times over the past couple of years.

Dancing across multiple guitar pedals that line the stage, Kohen also sings and lays down guitar loops while simultaneously tapping out beats on a drum machine. Nothing is pre-programmed. Every note played is as organic and fallible as its performer. Kohen’s physicality and presence is captivating on stage, but what’s even more impressive is that his songwriting talent is equally as vast and varied as his multitasking skills.

Arizona is the defining work of a masterful tunesmith. Despite their complexity, the songs are never disrupted by the intricacies running beneath their hyper-infectious pop structures. Kohen operates his equipment like the conductor of a small orchestra, summoning fully realized melodies from his devices. “I put in a lot of effort to make every single word and note of each song as deliberate and concise as I could,” Kohen explains, “rather than throw out an unintelligible overflow of information.”

Album opener “Trembling Hands” is a massive, hook-heavy anthem driven by layers of churning guitars and distortion that stirs somewhere between the throaty verses of Broken-era Nine Inch Nails to the hymnal anxiety of a Cloud Nothings record. The title track follows with a cascade of syncopated guitar arpeggios setting the stage for a reverse-reverb soaked vocal harmony that chimes like something off of U2’s Unforgettable Fire. And, that’s the beauty here: Mylets appeals to every listener, not just other musicians. Kohen understates his unparalleled and highly specific skills and instead forces the emotion informing his music to the forefront. This ability is what makes the songs on Arizona command repeat listens.

Mylets first came to Sargent House’s attention with a series of self-released solo EPs, much of which were remastered and compiled on the label’s 2013 release Retcon. Around that time, Kohen relocated from Columbus, Indiana to Los Angeles, residing at the artist-friendly Sargent House all the while working intensively on prepping Arizona material for the studio. In the interim, Mylets also toured extensively on different continents with And So I Watch You From Afar, TTNG and Emma Ruth Rundle. “Because of the range of time spent writing, it was very important for me to capture the concepts of creative and personal growth within the songs on the record,” Kohen says. “I recorded the album twice under very different circumstances in 2014 and on the second round of studio time, I left with a product that I felt was as true of a representation of what was initially in my head as I could have created.”

Arizona will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on 20th April 2015.

Fufanu Debut Single Circus Life | Music News

Fufanu Debut Single 'Circus Life' Music NewsFUFANU: ‘Circus Life’ [b/w] ‘Goodbye’
Debut Single, 6th April One Little Indian

Formerly operating as techno duo, Captain Fufanu, with the addition of live instrumentation – and the band name shortened to a more economical Fufanu (“the Captain was left behind at a rave in Cologne”) – the Icelandic group began working up a dark, metronomic take on 70s and 80s European music.

The rolling, hypnotic, seven minute ‘Circus Life’ – uploaded to YouTube in October – primed early adopters at Rolling Stone (‘Disclosure attending Bela Lugosi’s funeral’), Line of Best Fit (‘…like a mythical Ouroboros’) and JaJaJa (‘mesmerising’) – and is formally released as Fufanu’s debut single on the 6th April, backed with shuddering and drolly-titled live opener, ‘Goodbye’.

In the space of one week last November Fufanu became the most talked about new band of Iceland Airwaves, made their UK live debut at JaJaJa Festival and supported Damon Albarn at the Albert Hall – winning the approval of Brian Eno into the bargain.

They repeated the trick in January with crushing sets at Eurosonic and are back in the UK supporting *Bo Ningen in early April as below:

Wednesday 1st April London, Hoxton Bar & Kitchen*
Thursday 2nd April London, Sebright Arms

Fufanu is: Kaktus Einarsson (vocals)/ Gulli Halldór (guitar/programming).

Worry Dolls 4-Track EP ‘The Ride’ … Released Worldwide Today

‘Once upon a time there was a lively bunch who were worried…

…worried that music had become bland dull and middle-class.

So they put their worries in a jar, and from their limbs they grew guitars.

Johanna’s face was made of string and Emma’s tonsils start to sing.

They collected words and whistled tunes, drunk and smoked and act like loons.

They made a record in a glass, music for the working-class.

So play it loud and dance around, its WORRY DOLLS that you’ve just found!’

THE RIDE EP ART

Feisty, energetic, highly talented and driven to write music that compares with their heroes, the song writing trio of Emma Baldry, Martin Sloyan and Jon Kearley are the creative heartbeat of Worry Dolls.

Bio:
This is why they still call it the Golden State: The 49ers found it in the dirt, a century later the Dogtown kids discovered it in the shape of backyard pools, and now, some four decades further down the road, The Great Escape, a foot-stomping, genre-busting three-piece from Venice, have struck that California vein again –
with their own blend of raw energy song craft.

Inspired by everything the West Coast has come to stand for – the surf, the sun, the laid-back attitude, the proverbial Dream –, every single track, every chorus, every story they tell oozes that fun-loving, grit-digging vibe and feel. And you can just tell they had to go the extra mile to unearth what they were looking for: After all, two of them, Kristian Nord (drums, production) and Malte Hagemeister (guitars, production), are originally from Hamburg, Germany – these guys came a long way to live that Dream. Joined by powerhouse singer Amie Miriello, a Connecticut native and seasoned performer, they are about to release their debut album, a collection of songs that offers just what it says on the tin – A Great Escape.

Having first met while songwriting for other artists, the three L.A. transplants quickly realized they had a shared vision: Together, they wanted to create an update to that 60s, 70s sound when rock and pop music was still raw and unpolished. When it didn’t come attached with layers of irony or slick braggadocio. When it was nothing but a celebration of emotional storytelling, bold statements and heartfelt sentiments, poured into lavish melodies and harmonies. Hence the chorus, “this is a time to celebrate/What a beautiful escape,” as Amie sings over the pounding, surf’n’blues-heavy bliss that is “It’s Getting Better”.

Channeling the classic, timeless approach of their all-time favorites (e.g. Hendrix, Joplin, Cohen, Stones, the Beatles), but also nodding to their contemporaries (Adele, The Black Keys, The Heavy, Jack White), The Great Escape’s self-produced debut full-length has this no-holds-barred approach written all over it: “All I Think About” is all clapping, until the track breaks open into a huge chorus about longing, whereas horn-fuelled “Rebel” showcases intense dramatics and the amazingly powerful, raspy voice of Amie: “some people call me insane/they just ain’t on my level”. Elsewhere, the playful, sun-drenched “Secret Song” even flirts with gospel, soulfully majestic “I Want It All” is pure retro splendor, and even though “Let’s Go” sees them take off to higher and higher levels, they certainly know how to conjure minimalist, sweet and melancholy daydreams (“Don’t Wake Me Up”, “I Just Can’t Help Myself”) as well.

“Lots of first takes made it on the album, and most vocals were recorded right after writing the songs,” explains Malte, whose “demo guitars often stayed because they just had that right feeling.” Keeping things spontaneous and DIY, it’s “all about the performance, not about perfection,” Kristian adds. “When a take had the right kind of vibe to it, we just moved on and didn’t even second guess it.”

Album guests include old studio hands such as Stanley Behrens on blues harp (Jimmy Smith, Canned Heat, War, Willie Dixon), Kevin Dorsey on vocals (Michael Jackson’s vocal director, Ray Charles, Santana, Aretha Franklin), Zac Rae on B3, piano and keys (Lana Del Rey, Norah Jones, Santana), as well as a shape shifting horns section comprised of Katja Riekermann (Rod Stewart, Al Green) and Marco Palos (Los Lobos, Louis Prima Jr).

Trying to discover her true self, she has “traveled far and wide, but never understood,” Amie sings on “I Just Can’t Help Myself”, and yet it seems that after all this traveling and digging, they have finally struck the kind of “pay dirt” that really shines in their hearts and minds: “Don’t need a stake in the ground,” she sings elsewhere, “that’s not for me/Flow with the rhythm of the sound and the beat.” That’s more like it: A steady flow, no blinders, no rules. Music that feels more like an endless Hang Ten, pure, unfiltered playfulness on top of a wave, rather than some quick, steely-eyed Eureka moment.

With packed high-energy shows around L.A. already under their collective belt, The Great Escape have come to bring that gritty rawness they scooped out along the way.
