Financial Advice Or Financial Guidance – What’s The Difference? Read On To Find Out

Many people don’t understand the difference between financial advice and financial guidance. However, knowing it is essential to maximising your pension fund.

As you approach retirement, you become eligible for free and impartial pension guidance. The government introduced this entitlement in 2015 under their Guidance Guarantee. Two organisations that provide pension guidance are the Citizens Advice Bureau or Pension Wise, the government’s pension advisory service.

The guidance you receive from these differs from professional advice from professional advisors in a few aspects. The following paragraphs give you the essential factors of each.

Pension Guidance

  • Pension guidance will present you with an overall market appraisal in terms of what is available. However, not all products will be available to you.
  • It provides general information rather than focusing specifically on your financial situation.
  • The guidance you receive comes with no recommendations or guarantees.
  • It is free in line with the Guidance Guarantee.

Professional Pension Advice

  • A professional advisor can advise you on the best options for your financial situation.
  • Professional advice is specific to the individual receiving the advice. It considers your age, investments, financial goals, etc. You will receive advice on the benefits of different products and get offered recommendations.
  • Professional advice is generally not free. You may have to pay before receiving any advice, or you might receive a limited amount of advice at no charge to get you to take on the advisor’s services.
  • If you receive poor advice that causes you to lose money, you can take your issue up with the Financial Ombudsman or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. If your financial advisor is FCA-regulated, you could receive compensation.
  • To help you find a suitable advisor, the FCA maintains a database of all its regulated advisers. You should check this database before entering into a contract with any financial advisor.
  • On average, people who get professional financial advice amass around £30,991 more wealth in their pension funds than those who don’t. This statistic is according to ILC UK data from 2019.

Guidance or Advice?

You will find pension guidance of particular use if you need an introduction to your pension options. However, if you want help with specific aspects of your situation, professional advice is more suitable.

Do You Need a Financial Advisor?

If one of the following situations applies to you, you must seek financial advice from a regulated financial advisor:

  • You are part of a final-salary or career-average pension scheme, also known as a defined-benefit scheme, with a value greater than £30,000, and you intend to transfer to a defined-contribution pension.
  • You have a defined-contribution pension with a value greater than £30,000 with guaranteed payment on retirement, and you intend to use your pension pot for something else.

Even if you have less than £30,000 in your pension pot and want to do either of the options above, you should get professional advice.

Should You Choose An Independent Or Restricted Advisor

Before you commit to using a financial advisor, you should know if they are restricted or independent. So, ensure you ask when you first contact them.

Remember, restricted advisors cannot offer you whole-of-market advice or products, whereas independent advisors can.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this brief article will help you understand the difference between financial guidance and financial advice so that you can make better decisions about your pension. When looking at options for your pension, get in touch with a regulated financial adviser such as Portafina or, view the info at Pension Wise.

Michael Rowan revels in Tea Stories: Japan, the ideal Coffee (or should that be Tea?) Table, Book by Asura Burg.

This is an elegant volume, that transports the reader on a journey through a lesser-known culture, in the company of people who are intrinsically bound up in every aspect of this fascinating process.

Prefectures of Japan are governmental bodies of Japan, larger than cities, towns, and villages. The stories are based in the prefectures of Kyoto and Shizuoka which are important areas in the creation of tea.

Sumptuous photographs lend an elegance to this book, each simple image demanding closer examination, rendering it perfect for the coffee table.

The author, Asura Burg, begins by telling of her growing interest in tea, first as a teenager in Lithuania later as a tea dealer in Israel and finally as a Tea Wholesaler in London, but it is the stories of the people connected to the tea trade in all its aspects, that draws you in to this story of Tea.

Here we meet Mr and Mrs Fujiwaras, fourth generation tea farmers, Hitoshi Morimoto the potter amongst a rich list of characters, each connected to a different feature of the tea industry.

There is growing interest in Japanese Tea and the culture associated with it. When we think of Japanese tea, we probably think of the Tea Ceremony and whilst this too is covered in Tea Stories: Japan, there is a wealth of interesting subjects including the cultivation of tea, Bizen ware (the ceramics associated with tea drinking).Tea Chemistry, Tea ware and of course the all-important steps for brewing various Japanese teas.

The chapter on tea recipes may surprise and delight, ranging as it does from lightly pickled summer vegetables Ochazuke, to cucumber finger sandwiches with tea- flavoured Miso Paste.

Tea Stories: Japan, is a contemporary take on other tea uses, including wagashi sweets and hojicha desserts, embellishing photo-led stories with taste and otherness.

This is a book about tea and so much more and will appeal to those with an interest in Japanese culture.

Tea Stories:Japan by Asura Burg, £33.00.

Tea Stories: Japan can be ordered online from the official website and My Cup of Tea.

Typically  entrepreneurial  Joffe Books keeps an eye on various anniversaries and marries authors’ books to these events, and this is one of the strengths of this award winning independent publisher – they are creative in alerting  readers to their books.  So what books? Who chooses which ones to publish?

Let’s meet another of the team  EMMA GRUNDY HAIGH   COMMISSIONING AND MANAGING EDITOR

WHAT I DO: As well as working in tandem with both editors and authors to create exceptional books, a key part of my role is discovering new (and new to us) talent — so reading submissions, seeking out exciting authors at events, through prizes or by building great relationships with agents. I am also constantly looking for new and interesting ways of securing our reputation as one of the industry’s innovators.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2021: Participating in increasing access into publishing, by leading workshops and webinars for both prospective authors and people looking to get into publishing. (I have a growing series of events coming up that I cannot wait to begin.)

FAVOURITE BOOKS: I can’t be expected to pick a favourite Joffe Books title, there are just too many. So it has to be The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It’s just exquisite. The short story I return to almost yearly is ‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson. Linking the two are twists that send your heart into your throat as everything you thought you knew gets turned on its head.

Fighting for your life – a paramedic’s story By Lysa Walder Reviewed by Natalie Jayne Peeke West Country Correspondent

A teenage boy lies on the pavement, bleeding from a stab wound; a distraught mum watches, in mute shock, as her daughter suffers a terrifying fatal asthma attack; a young girl is gang-raped and her stricken boyfriend takes an overdose; a disturbed young man flings himself in front of a speeding train at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Few people can imagine living in a world where such situations are part of everyday life. Yet for veteran paramedic Lysa Walder, these and thousands of other emergency call outs are part of a day’s work: scenes of tragedy, heroism loss and horror – but also stories of triumph and humour.

Lysa has been a paramedic for over twenty years, working for the London Ambulance service – the world’s biggest and busiest free service – for much of that time. Here, she reveals what it’s really like to work in a job that brings paramedic teams face-to-face with death – and destiny – every day.

I, like many others, am fascinated with the stories of a Doctor, A nurse, A midwife , a Paramedic. They work in a sector that is completely alien to those of us on the ‘outside’. They are there for us when we need them most, but have you ever stopped to wonder whether they treat us, forget us as they move onto the next person who needs their medical expertise. Well,  it seems, they don’t forget us quite so easily.

Lysa shared just some of her cases with brutal honesty in this marvelous book, which is extremely easy to read as each patient’s case is walked through in the span of 3-4 pages. So easy in fact, that as time for bed approaches,  it is very easy to tell yourself ‘just one more’.

Lysa is full of sympathy, compassion, understanding and her stories reflect this along with the sense of reward she must get from a job well done. There are some stories that are downright frustrating and others that made me cry. The NHS and its employees are often taken for granted and it does make you stop and think and appreciate them, now more than ever.

If you are a fan of books such as ‘Prison Doctor’ ‘Call the midwife’ ‘This is going to hurt’ or TV show such as ’24 hours in A&E’ then you will devour this book just like I did.

Thank you for everything you have done Lysa, I applaud you.

Fighting for your Life by Lisa Waldon is available in paperback and eBook.

From Booker-nominated debut novels to fiercely funny memoirs, and from heart-warming stories turned into much-loved TV series to feminist retellings of traditional fairy tales, Marian’s curated list aims to inspire, engage and entertain, as an antidote to the difficult times we’re living in.

Marian’s list includes: Stella Gibbons’s Cold Comfort Farm, a classic comedy novel named one of BBC ‘100 Novels That Shaped Our World’; The Surface Breaks by Louise O’Neill, a feminist reimagining of The Little Mermaid; My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite, the sensational debut novel nominated for the Booker Prize in 2019; Love, Nina by Nina Stibbe, a laugh-out-lout memoir adapted into a popular BBC series by Nick Hornby; Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld, a Pride and Prejudice catapulted into our modern world; Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce, the Sunday Times best-seller chosen as a Richard & Judy Book Club Pick; the WWII romance The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson, based on the author’s own experience as a refugee.

The list has been released by Bookshop.org – the alternative to Amazon for shoppers wanting to support independent bookshops when they shop online. Celebrated by critics, readers and booksellers, Marian is known for her untiring support of independent bookshops. She was one of the first authors to take part in “At Home with Four Indies”, the virtual series of events launched in lockdown by independent booksellers from Linghams (Heswall), Booka (Oswestery), Book-ish (Crickhowell) and Forum Books (Corbridge).

Marian Keyes, author of Grown Ups, said: “Life is very challenging at the moment and personally, I’m desperate for a holiday from reality and from my head. Reading has always been a huge pleasure for me but because so much fear is circulating, there are lots of subjects I’m currently not able for. I’ve put together a collection of titles that I’ve found engaging, uplifting, distracting and entertaining. I hope that some of them give you enjoyment and respite. I am thrilled to share this list on a platform that supports the vital work of independent bookshops.

One of the most successful novelists of all time, Keyes’ books have sold over 30 million copies in 33 languages, and her writing has received several accolades, including the British Book Awards, the Irish Book Awards and the inaugural Melissa Nathan Prize for Comedy Romance. In the last year, Marian has been chair of judges for the Comedy Women in Print prize, and the second series of her instant hit, Between Ourselves, will air on BBC Radio 4 on 18 February 2021.

Marian joins a growing number of authors to share a curated reading list on Bookshop.org, such as: Elena Ferrante, Malorie Blackman, Nikesh ShuklaEmma Gannon and more. Author reading lists on Bookshop.org have proven to have a tangible impact on sales figures for the books they feature, shining a light on many lesser known works beyond bestseller lists.

Help for home-schoolers! Useful tips that will see you through.

Was mathematics always this difficult? Why does science suddenly seem so difficult? And why is the way they do things nowadays so different? Just some of the questions most parents find themselves asking a few times each day whilst home-schooling. It’s safe to say that home-schooling isn’t for the faint-hearted and we certainly have more respect and admiration for teachers than we did before we became emergency educators.

Trying to get your children to complete any school work at home is difficult, and that’s before you manage to get your own head around ‘why Timmy has 3 apples and Sarah has 6’ …None of us signed up to this physically and mentally draining task, and if you have more than one child to educate at home as well as a full-time job to juggle, you may be wondering when this nightmare will end.

In the meantime, I’ve gathered some helpful tips for home-schoolers that will see everyone through …at least until the weekend! Read on to find out more.

Stock up on supplies

Having the right resources at home will not only make your life easier but also help to enhance your child’s learning and understanding. Start by stocking up on paper and printer inks, you’ll find the best Epson cartridges here, all at competitive prices. Being able to print work and activities that have been sent over by the kids’ teacher means they can work independently and away from a screen. You can also print fun activities for when they need some downtime.

Plenty of pens, notebooks and stationery are a must, along with other learning resources such as counters, flashcards, books and even mini whiteboard markers. Whatever you think will enhance your child’s learning should be something to consider.

Get outside!

Kids don’t just learn in the classroom. Spending time outdoors exposes them to all kinds of learning opportunities. From nature and habitats to the weather and the seasons. Forests and oceans to mammals and birds – get them caring for the world we live in. Taking some of your lessons outdoors – even for something as simple as a nature trail – can enhance their learning and make this period much more immersive. It also means you all get to enjoy some fresh air and time outdoors.

Organise in advance

Seeing what their teacher has set for the day in the morning, isn’t ideal. To help your children get the most out of their learning experience, planning ahead and keeping yourself organised is the best approach. That means having the right equipment set out and ready for the next day, the lessons and activities planned, packed lunches arranged, and the right mindset in place. Having all this sorted in advance will make your home-schooling schedule much easier to cope with.

Accept that every day won’t be idyllic

Regrettably, even if you plan your day down to the last detail, things will go awry. Sometimes our kids just aren’t motivated to learn, and in this confusing and difficult time, we shouldn’t expect too much from them. Dedicating a few hours each day to their curriculum and other time for activities they enjoy such as reading, arts or even music, is more than enough. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself.
