Living with less: Do you Dare?

The decision to downsize never comes easy, but luckily, almost always it turns out to be the greatest thing. The mere thought of moving is horrifying enough, not to mention the planning, organization, and decision making along the way. Scary as it sounds, it is a venture that many people undertake for a reason and, as you can guess already, it is worth it. Same as for any big change in life, it is a process that is complicated and even exhausting, but on the other hand, a change of lifestyle in ‘’less’’ direction will turn out to be liberating and rewarding in so many ways.

Before the move

Moving starts weeks ahead, even months in some cases. Organizing a project big as this takes the time to make a detailed plan, especially when downsizing. Go through the rooms and slowly begin to say good bye by choosing the stuff that will not end up in your new home. If you are moving with your family, make sure you have an agreement on downsizing goals so that you could avoid misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Now is the time to picture the style of new home and to move forward by eliminating the stuff which will not fit in.

Determine your needs

Know your needs and decide on the spot what goes and what stays. For example, if you are moving from a house with three bedrooms to a condo with one, the math is simple. Assuming you know the measurements of a new home, make sure that your belongings will fit the place, especially big pieces of furniture. Make an inventory of essentials that you will require in your new place and get rid of the all the rest. Cruel thing to do, but if downsizing already, why not doing it right. Downsize on everything you own, including furniture, clothes, accessories or home appliances.

Monetize your efforts

One of the obvious benefits of ‘’less’’ is the lower cost of living in general. Since it is one of the most important motifs of downsizing, take a step further and earn some money by organizing a yard sale and cash in all the unwanted items. Being reasonable and consistent with this exhausting process deserves a reward, so treat yourself with some extra pocket money that you can wisely invest in your new home. Donate some stuff to charity and remember that your junk will bring a smile to someone’s face.

Assess new storage area

People often overlook or overestimate new storage area ending up with more stuff than planned in a less place than previously thought. By knowing measurements of storage places in the new home, you will know how many things to dispose of and avoid cluttering the space. However, it is possible that there won’t be enough room for all of your possessions. For that matter, consider renting a storage where you’ll store your belongings away, but still in the reach, if needed. Before you rent a storage check on their standards and safety issues, but rest assure that the most of the best affordable storage solutions provide good storing conditions as well as video surveillance.

Move

Make sure to move the furniture first and put it in its designated place. That way you will deal with the heaviest pieces in the very beginning and still have the energy for the rest of the stuff while at the same time you’ll get a better indication where the smaller items will go. Moving the furniture first will give you an immediate a sense of home plus, it will be easier to organize the rest of incoming stuff. Label the boxes while packing so that you can put them in their respective rooms when moving. Organize things as you unpack which won’t be much of the trouble if you bring only essentials.

Spruce up your new place

The new home is a chance for a completely new style and interior design. Now is the time to make your home functional and sophisticated by going minimal. Repurpose old furniture or have a new one that will be a better match. Make sure to get pieces with hidden storage, such as coffee tables, couches, etc. A clever use of space is a must so go vertical when storing things and install some nice shelves.

Make room bigger

Use tricks to make the room more spacious than it is. Uncover the floor and place smaller rugs. Uncover windows too and allow as many natural lights as possible. Place the mirrors on the walls and use lighter colors of fabrics. Choose stripes or some geometrical patterns since they elongate the space. A proper lighting will give a room completely new look in the evening hours. Avoid excessive accessory and beautify the room with minimal and tasteful decoration.

Conclusion

While still in the process of downsizing, no matter how scary it seemed at first, you will soon realize the advantages and the truth that lies behind the ‘’less is more’’. Changes are inevitable so why not changing for the better. Downsizing brings a relief regarding the expenses and provides a new opportunity to start over again somewhere else. Not to mention the joy of cleaning and simplicity of maintaining order in much smaller space. Whatever the reasons for downsizing are, be an optimist, embrace the change and take this chance to improve the quality of life.

The Business of Books: A Sense of Place – Jane Cable on how fact and fiction can easily blur

Writers are inspired by many different things but for me it always starts with a place. A little over two years ago I found myself in the middle of the steam punk festival in Lincoln. People in amazing costumes were everywhere, breathing life into the city’s cobbled climbs and quirky coffee shops. It felt as though I had walked into the beginning of a novel and very quickly I realised that I had. It was just down to me to write it.

Last week I went back. The latest round of editing is almost complete – it won’t be the last, but I’m finally satisfied that the manuscript is almost in good enough shape to be found a home. I have a couple of agents in my sights and a shortlist of three publishers who take direct submissions and whose criteria it fits. This time I’m going to be very careful.

The story has two main locations, the city of Lincoln itself and the picturesque village of Winteringham on the banks of the Humber. I construct the settings for my stories very carefully; I know where the characters’ houses, flats – and barges – are; the places they work; the bars and restaurants they frequent and where my heroine Rachel goes running. In my own mind I create details so rich I inhabit the settings myself – so it comes as something of a shock when they are not quite as I remembered.

Much of the Lincoln part of the story takes place along the Fossdyke Navigation which joins the heart of the city to the River Trent. I think I surprised my husband by saying, “That’s Rachel’s flat” – and surprised myself by having forgotten it has a balcony overlooking the canal. But the story doesn’t need a balcony so I won’t be adding one. The apartment in my mind is so very real it would feel uncomfortable anyway.

I don’t think this is especially strange or odd – no more than is normal for writers anyway. The best of fiction is so much about the richness of the characters, to create them I think you need to actually walk in their footsteps, inhabit their world. For me, once I’ve grounded them in a physical setting, everything else falls into place. I am completely in awe of authors who can imagine and populate whole new worlds.

But I’m having to accept that my memory is far from perfect. I needed a male character who was a without doubt a local man so I picked an unusual surname from Winteringham’s war memorial. On a return visit to the museum in Lincoln I thought it such a co-incidence a Daubney was quoted on one of the display panels. When we arrived in Winteringham, the name wasn’t on the memorial at all. I read it three or four times with growing disbelief. Was another of my characters, the enigmatic Nick, up to his tricks again?

It seems so… either that or subliminal recall is far stronger than we think. I needed to name one of the properties close to the village centre. Not anything too twee, but something comfortingly rural, so I decided on Bramble Cottage. This visit I noticed that the alleyway running up the side of the houses is called Bramble Lane. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Pepe, The Sound Stacker Puppy From Hape – How Cute by Dr Kathleen Thompson

When I was asked to review this sweet wooden stacker toy, by Hape, I knew I needed help. So I called in the resident toy expert, Henry.

At fifteen months old, Henry has approximately fourteen months experience of testing toys to destruction, so I was confident in his assessment.

With true professionalism, he started with Pepe’s Overall Appearance. His smile and the way he dashed over to Pepe and pulled off his head awarded the toy a good score on the Appeal Scale.

Next – Functionality Test. Henry removed each of the brightly coloured rings of Pepe’s body from the central stick. He then tested whether the rings could be replaced – both in the correct order and in random order – they could. Henry then discovered that you could remove all the rings, turn the central stick upside down and push the stick into the rings as they lay on the floor. This gave him surprising pleasure. Thus Pepe passed the Versatility and Capacity for Non-standard Usage tests with flying colours.

Next, rings once more in place, I demonstrated to Henry that if Pepe’s head were pushed down, he made a cute barking noise. At this point Henry collapsed into laughter – yes Pepe passed the Amusing Surprise Feature test too.

Finally – the Destruction Test. With typical conscientiousness, Henry took each part of Pepe in turn and threw it with all his force on the floor, which made a pleasing noise, but there was no damage to Pepe, or the floor.

So, all in all, this is a very appealing toy. It encourages colour identification and balance skills, while developing play skills. Most important – Henry really liked it.

The Pepe Sound Stacker from Hape is just one of a whole new range of fun-loving characters in the exciting world of PEPE & Friends. Other toys in the range include an Activity Cube, a Musical Push Along, a Friendship Tower and Puzzle Blocks. Using a range of natural materials and only water-based paints, and avoiding harsh glues and plastics, Hape are the largest producers of wooden toys.

A Marvellous Marathon Effort

An amazing team of 22 supporters completed an epic ‘Marathon Effort’ to raise funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF).

Joe Barnett, JTYAF Trustee, organised the walk which started at Sandbanks and finished 26 miles along the coast path, in Lymington.  Although they headed off in glorious sunshine they battled wind and torrential rain at times, many picking up injuries too. They all accomplished what they had set out to do, showing great courage, determination and plenty of cheerfulness in adversity reflecting the true spirit of the charity.

Pete Thornton, Charity Chairman, commented, “We can’t thank Joe and his team enough for taking part in this fantastic event. Thanks, must also go to all the friends and family who have supported them so generously. They are aiming to raise an incredible £2000 which will make a huge difference to the opportunities that we can make available to local young people in the year ahead.”

If you would like to support Joe and his team in their ‘Marathon Effort’ it’s not too late.  Visit their online fundraising page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/marathoneffortforJT

Kebabs

You may have already consigned the BBQ to the back of the shed for the year, let’s face it summer has been a bit of a wash out, and hung up your apron but you can still achieve some excellent results under the grill. In a restaurant one of your goals is consistency, you want a dish your customers can enjoy again and again and recommend to all their friends. This is one of the reasons we follow recipes. As someone interested in food, and you are reading this article, you will probably look at a recipe then like me tweak a little ingredient here, adjust an amount there. I am going to make a wish and hope you change the following recipe(s) totally, utterly and completely. Just think of them as the loosest of culinary guidelines. There is an almost infinite opportunity to mix and match textures and flavours and experiment to your heart’s content.

Kebabs

There are a couple of rules, first please if you are using wooden skewers soak them in water overnight as they have a tendency to burn, especially over a barbecue or char-grill. The second is not so easy and requires a little experience. Cut up your ingredients so they will cook at the same time. What do I mean by this? A large wedge of onion will not cook as quick as a king prawn so separate out the layers. Courgettes, mushrooms and bell pepper all add colour and flavour but need to be quite large pieces if mixed with small pieces of chicken or steak as the denser texture of the meat takes longer to cook. If you want to make a seafood kebab try wrapping scallops in bacon to protect them from the searing heat of the grill and add flavour. Finally, not a rule but a top tip, a good marinade will add a ton of flavour but be careful, sugary marinades can burn and are better brushed on the food in the latter stages of cooking.

Chicken and Vegetable Kebabs                                                      makes 8 kebabs

2 large Chicken Breasts cut in two-centimetre chunks

1 large Courgette, washed and cut into slices

1 large Red Bell pepper, cut in chunks

1 large Red Onion, peeled, quartered, and parted in layers

16 large Button Mushrooms, wiped

Quality Olive Oil

Sea Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper

8 skewers

Thread the meat and vegetables on the skewers. Place on a baking tray, drizzle with oil and season generously. Cook on barbecue or under a medium to high grill turning regularly for around ten minutes until cooked. There that is it the easiest recipe I will probably ever post.

Now let your taste buds run wild, here are a few suggestions;

King Prawn and Rump Steak ( Surf’n’turf )

Monkfish, Prawns and Scallops wrapped in Bacon

Chicken Tikka

Lamb with Garlic and Thyme

Mediterranean Vegetables

Cajun Tuna

Sweet and Sour Pork with Bell Pepper and Pineapple

Marinades

Marinating your meat and fish for a couple of hours will add multiple layers of flavour and you can brush the kebabs with the marinade during cooking. Remember that if you use a sweetened marinade to lift the kebabs a little higher on the barbecue or turn the grill down a fraction as they will easily burn over a high heat.

Quick Southern Barbecue – 4 tablespoons Tomato Ketchup, 4 tablespoons Vegetable Oil, 1 tablespoons Sherry Vinegar, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce, 1 tablespoon Dark Brown Sugar, 2 Cloves Garlic, peeled and pureed, 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika, ½ teaspoon Hot Pepper sauce, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Greek Style – 4 tablespoons quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil, freshly squeezed juice of two Lemons, 2 tablespoons Honey, ½ teaspoon freshly chopped Oregano, ½ teaspoon freshly chopped Rosemary, ½ teaspoon freshly chopped Thyme, ¼ teaspoon Sea Salt, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Asian – 4 tablespoons Vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons toasted Sesame Oil, 2 tablespoons Rice Wine Vinegar, 2 tablespoons Light Soy Sauce, 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and pureed, 1 large piece of preserved Ginger, finely grated, ¼ teaspoon Chinese 5 Spice, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Sweet ‘n’ Sour – 4 tablespoons Tomato Ketchup, 4 tablespoons Pineapple Juice, 2 tablespoon Honey, 1 tablespoon Sherry Vinegar, 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and pureed, ¼ teaspoon Sea Salt, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Fiery – 8 tablespoons quality Olive Oil, 1 small hot Chilli, finely chopped, 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and pureed, 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika, ½ teaspoon hot Pepper Sauce, ½ teaspoon Sea Salt, ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
