Pepe, The Sound Stacker Puppy From Hape – How Cute by Dr Kathleen Thompson

When I was asked to review this sweet wooden stacker toy, by Hape, I knew I needed help. So I called in the resident toy expert, Henry.

At fifteen months old, Henry has approximately fourteen months experience of testing toys to destruction, so I was confident in his assessment.

With true professionalism, he started with Pepe’s Overall Appearance. His smile and the way he dashed over to Pepe and pulled off his head awarded the toy a good score on the Appeal Scale.

Next – Functionality Test. Henry removed each of the brightly coloured rings of Pepe’s body from the central stick. He then tested whether the rings could be replaced – both in the correct order and in random order – they could. Henry then discovered that you could remove all the rings, turn the central stick upside down and push the stick into the rings as they lay on the floor. This gave him surprising pleasure. Thus Pepe passed the Versatility and Capacity for Non-standard Usage tests with flying colours.

Next, rings once more in place, I demonstrated to Henry that if Pepe’s head were pushed down, he made a cute barking noise. At this point Henry collapsed into laughter – yes Pepe passed the Amusing Surprise Feature test too.

Finally – the Destruction Test. With typical conscientiousness, Henry took each part of Pepe in turn and threw it with all his force on the floor, which made a pleasing noise, but there was no damage to Pepe, or the floor.

So, all in all, this is a very appealing toy. It encourages colour identification and balance skills, while developing play skills. Most important – Henry really liked it.

The Pepe Sound Stacker from Hape is just one of a whole new range of fun-loving characters in the exciting world of PEPE & Friends. Other toys in the range include an Activity Cube, a Musical Push Along, a Friendship Tower and Puzzle Blocks. Using a range of natural materials and only water-based paints, and avoiding harsh glues and plastics, Hape are the largest producers of wooden toys.

A Marvellous Marathon Effort

An amazing team of 22 supporters completed an epic ‘Marathon Effort’ to raise funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF).

Joe Barnett, JTYAF Trustee, organised the walk which started at Sandbanks and finished 26 miles along the coast path, in Lymington.  Although they headed off in glorious sunshine they battled wind and torrential rain at times, many picking up injuries too. They all accomplished what they had set out to do, showing great courage, determination and plenty of cheerfulness in adversity reflecting the true spirit of the charity.

Pete Thornton, Charity Chairman, commented, “We can’t thank Joe and his team enough for taking part in this fantastic event. Thanks, must also go to all the friends and family who have supported them so generously. They are aiming to raise an incredible £2000 which will make a huge difference to the opportunities that we can make available to local young people in the year ahead.”

If you would like to support Joe and his team in their ‘Marathon Effort’ it’s not too late.  Visit their online fundraising page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/marathoneffortforJT

Kebabs

You may have already consigned the BBQ to the back of the shed for the year, let’s face it summer has been a bit of a wash out, and hung up your apron but you can still achieve some excellent results under the grill. In a restaurant one of your goals is consistency, you want a dish your customers can enjoy again and again and recommend to all their friends. This is one of the reasons we follow recipes. As someone interested in food, and you are reading this article, you will probably look at a recipe then like me tweak a little ingredient here, adjust an amount there. I am going to make a wish and hope you change the following recipe(s) totally, utterly and completely. Just think of them as the loosest of culinary guidelines. There is an almost infinite opportunity to mix and match textures and flavours and experiment to your heart’s content.

Kebabs

There are a couple of rules, first please if you are using wooden skewers soak them in water overnight as they have a tendency to burn, especially over a barbecue or char-grill. The second is not so easy and requires a little experience. Cut up your ingredients so they will cook at the same time. What do I mean by this? A large wedge of onion will not cook as quick as a king prawn so separate out the layers. Courgettes, mushrooms and bell pepper all add colour and flavour but need to be quite large pieces if mixed with small pieces of chicken or steak as the denser texture of the meat takes longer to cook. If you want to make a seafood kebab try wrapping scallops in bacon to protect them from the searing heat of the grill and add flavour. Finally, not a rule but a top tip, a good marinade will add a ton of flavour but be careful, sugary marinades can burn and are better brushed on the food in the latter stages of cooking.

Chicken and Vegetable Kebabs                                                      makes 8 kebabs

2 large Chicken Breasts cut in two-centimetre chunks

1 large Courgette, washed and cut into slices

1 large Red Bell pepper, cut in chunks

1 large Red Onion, peeled, quartered, and parted in layers

16 large Button Mushrooms, wiped

Quality Olive Oil

Sea Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper

8 skewers

Thread the meat and vegetables on the skewers. Place on a baking tray, drizzle with oil and season generously. Cook on barbecue or under a medium to high grill turning regularly for around ten minutes until cooked. There that is it the easiest recipe I will probably ever post.

Now let your taste buds run wild, here are a few suggestions;

King Prawn and Rump Steak ( Surf’n’turf )

Monkfish, Prawns and Scallops wrapped in Bacon

Chicken Tikka

Lamb with Garlic and Thyme

Mediterranean Vegetables

Cajun Tuna

Sweet and Sour Pork with Bell Pepper and Pineapple

Marinades

Marinating your meat and fish for a couple of hours will add multiple layers of flavour and you can brush the kebabs with the marinade during cooking. Remember that if you use a sweetened marinade to lift the kebabs a little higher on the barbecue or turn the grill down a fraction as they will easily burn over a high heat.

Quick Southern Barbecue – 4 tablespoons Tomato Ketchup, 4 tablespoons Vegetable Oil, 1 tablespoons Sherry Vinegar, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce, 1 tablespoon Dark Brown Sugar, 2 Cloves Garlic, peeled and pureed, 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika, ½ teaspoon Hot Pepper sauce, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Greek Style – 4 tablespoons quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil, freshly squeezed juice of two Lemons, 2 tablespoons Honey, ½ teaspoon freshly chopped Oregano, ½ teaspoon freshly chopped Rosemary, ½ teaspoon freshly chopped Thyme, ¼ teaspoon Sea Salt, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Asian – 4 tablespoons Vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons toasted Sesame Oil, 2 tablespoons Rice Wine Vinegar, 2 tablespoons Light Soy Sauce, 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and pureed, 1 large piece of preserved Ginger, finely grated, ¼ teaspoon Chinese 5 Spice, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Sweet ‘n’ Sour – 4 tablespoons Tomato Ketchup, 4 tablespoons Pineapple Juice, 2 tablespoon Honey, 1 tablespoon Sherry Vinegar, 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and pureed, ¼ teaspoon Sea Salt, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

Fiery – 8 tablespoons quality Olive Oil, 1 small hot Chilli, finely chopped, 2 cloves of Garlic, peeled and pureed, 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika, ½ teaspoon hot Pepper Sauce, ½ teaspoon Sea Salt, ½ teaspoon Black Pepper

Hampshire style blogger shaves her head to raise vital funds for boy’s Stem Cell treatment

A 21-year-old girl has shaved her head in a bid to raise the £30,000 a young boy desperately needs for Stem Cell Treatment.

Chloe Miles, from Aldershot, shaved her head to help her friend, four-year-old Enzo, from Odiham, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was just a few months old.

Chloe met Enzo when she began volunteering with Sebastian’s Action Trust, a charity that supports the families of seriously-ill children. Chloe’s younger brother Dylan had Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, and sadly passed away. Shortly after, Chloe began volunteering with the charity and was paired with Enzo and his family to help support them through helping with the shopping, daily household chores or simply playing with Enzo.

Chloe said: “The Trust couldn’t have picked a better match. I very quickly fell in love with Enzo’s cheeky personality and instantly clicked with Enzo’s mum, Caroline. I actually only visited once through the charity before we exchanged numbers and for the last two years I’ve been welcomed as a family friend instead of a volunteer.

“I feel so lucky to be able to watch Enzo and his little brother Luca grow and develop. I volunteered to help Enzo and his family but I think they’ve actually been the ones helping me. When Dylan passed away I had no one to be silly for, no one to entertain and interact with in the way that I’d known for my whole life with Dylan.”

Becoming friends with Enzo helped Chloe enormously through her grieving process, so when Caroline mentioned that they hoped to do Stem Cell treatment to help Enzo’s condition, she desperately wanted to find a way to help them raise the funds.

Chloe decided to shave her head and set up a JustGiving page in the hope that people would donate towards his treatment, and has shared it on social media using ‘#EnzosStemCellAppeal’.

She said: “When I was about seven or eight years old I heard about someone shaving their head for charity and I decided that if Dylan ever needed money raised I would shave my hair off for him. Unfortunately when Dylan got ill there was nothing I could do, there was no treatment and no amount of money could have helped him.

“I’ve seen first hand the effect that the first round of Stem Cell Treatment had on Enzo, his progress was incredible to watch. There is of course no guarantee that the second round will have the same effect but if it does it could improve Enzo’s quality of life drastically and hopefully lead to him living independently when he’s older.”

Chloe shaved her head at The William Cobbett, in Farnham, and held a fundraising day on 2 September.

Although she is still getting used to her short hair, she said she feels fantastic and the amount of support she’s received has been incredible.

So far almost 200 people have donated to Chloe’s JustGiving page and more than £4,400 has been raised out of her £30,000 target.

Enzo’s mother, Caroline, said: “Enzo is such an incredible boy. We do various types of physio with him every day, which he finds difficult and exhausting, but he has such strength and determination, he understands that the work that we do with him is beneficial to his development so he never puts up a fight. He works so hard to achieve what many would consider to be the simplest of tasks, but for Enzo, any achievement is a massive achievement. Life for him is tough, he has to constantly push on and work hard, but he is the happiest little boy, with a fantastic personality, sense of humour and inspirational drive for life.

Stem cell treatment could help Enzo in various ways. This will be his second round. After his first round of treatment we noticed significant changes in his ability. For example, he gained better head control so that he can sit in his chair or supported by me for longer periods of time and gained better fine motor skills, so he is now able to reach for a toy and grasp it in his hand. We hope that another round of treatment will help him to the same degree if not more so.

With the stem cell treatment we hope that in the future, at the very least, Enzo will gain the ability to live as independently as possible. We hope that he will gain even better head, arm and hand control and movement so that he can sit un supported/assisted, be able to lift himself, for example, from a chair to a bed and to gain the skills needed to operate a power wheel chair.”
