The Perfume Studio – Review by Talia Lee-Skudder

the_perfume_studio

If you’re looking for a unique and fun Christmas gift idea then the Perfume Studio masterclass should be at the top of your list.

The Perfume Studio invites you to spend a day learning about the art of perfumery and creating your own unique and bespoke scent. I attended their masterclass in Manchester last Saturday, and was enrolled on the Platinum Experience which meant I got to walk away with a 20ml bottle filled with my own signature scent.

Guests were welcomed with a glass of fizz, or orange juice for those who weren’t quite ready to start drinking at 11 am on a Saturday morning. Once everyone had settled at their tables, the perfume stylist, Freda Rogers, gave an insight into the world of perfumery. Freda provided a brief overview of the business that has been running for more than ten years, and that has brought with it the opportunity for many to blend their own fragrances and learn about the art of perfumery.

the-perfume_studio4

After a brief introduction in which we were told we would be following in the footsteps of countless celebrities who have gone through a similar experience in the creation of their own fragrances, we started the process of choosing our own scents. Individual scent cards were handed out whilst Freda described the key notes in each sample. She informed us that fragrances consist of top note scents, middle notes and base notes and the importance of each category.

Starting with the base note, this range of blends ensure the longevity of your scent and it is these notes that last on your clothes. The blends include musk, woody and balsamic to name a few. We were then introduced to samples of the middle note which set the tone of the whole fragrance and include a number of floral based scents. Finally, we sampled the top scent. This is the blend that makes your perfume instantly recognisable; although it does not have the same longevity of the base note it is this blend that is most memorable.

the-perfume_studio1

We each collected our favourite blends and decided what worked well together. It is important to remember however, that creating a fragrance is subjective – so resist the urge to be tempted by what others around you like and dislike. After much deliberation, I finally decided on what blend of scents I wanted and my bespoke fragrance included woody, musk, neroli, gentle floral and fruity. The perfume stylists create your fragrance while you wait or have your afternoon tea. The 20ml bottle of your perfume comes in a cream box emblazoned with the Perfume Studio logo, a lovely keepsake from a brilliant experience.

the-perfume-studio2

You can attend the Perfume Studio masterclasses nationwide as well as at the flagship events held in London and Manchester. These are group experiences. However, private consultations and events are also offered. You can find more details at The Perfume Studio

The Perfume Studio masterclass is the ideal Christmas gift. It’s a great experience for you and a friend or even to do on your own. Not only is it fun and a fab insight into the world of perfumery, but you also get to create your own bespoke perfume blend. A definite must for your Christmas lists.

A Staycation Beats The Winter Blues

With the economy on the rise, businesses are having a ball. While increased income puts many much closer to affording vacations in luxurious destinations, what this means for most professionals is more work and even less personal time. Taking a well-deserved vacation is shelved once again.

df69196e46993f749c8a740540cbf1de Image Source: pinterest.com

The term staycation was coined during the financial crisis of 2007-2010 in the U.S. and subsequently when the U.K. pound sterling dropped in 2009 and destination vacations became too expensive. Today, staycations are making a comeback because workaholics can’t find the time to take longer than a weekend away.

If a staycation is all you have time for, there are many modern conveniences that can bring luxury and decadence right to your front door. It does take a little planning, but relaxing right at home can truly satisfy as the season gets chillier.

To create the feel of a vacation, take a half-day on Friday and come in after lunch on Monday. No one is so indispensible that they cannot take 2 half days off. Plan your staycation like you would a vacation – all inclusive. One of the most important things NOT to do on a staycation is clean up after yourself. Make sure you are pampered as if you were not at home.

ape_header3 Image Source: apersonalelf.com

Whether it’s cleaning your flat in London or your ranch house outside New York, schedule someone to come each day you are home. Have them do all of your dishes, make your beds and change your towels daily. Pay extra for special touches like fresh flowers, setting your bathroom up as a spa or simply prepping coffee for the morning. Just a few consecutive days of not tending to dirty dishes or smoothing rumpled sheets is going to make a huge difference to your mood.

Make sure you collect all the local menus and delivery services in case you want “room service” or the weather runs foul and you choose to stay in. Have a local gourmet grocery deliver decadent snacks of fruit and cheese, wine and champagne. Use your best china and crystal, knowing someone else will clean up after you.

Make Friday night your big night out and then in. No matter where you live, have a luxury car pick you up and take you to an early dinner reservation at the trendiest restaurant in town. Reservations before 6PM are usually easy to get. You also get to come home before the evening chill really sets in.

clearwater-casino1Image Souce: casinofee.blogspot.com

Have a friend prep the house while you are gone to turn your living room into a nightclub and casino. Change out some lights, hang a disco ball and have your favorite dance mix ready to play. Put wine or champagne on ice and, when you arrive home, dance like no one is watching.

Hook your computer up to your large screen TV, get your friends over and get ready to bring the thrill of real-time action into your front room. Play live games with real dealers and cheer each other on as you toss the dice on the craps table or beat the house at Blackjack. You never know – Monte Carlo could actually be your next holiday!

For Saturday and Sunday, split the planning up and assign a day and a budget to each person. That way everyone gets a nice surprise. Many people never know the historic or unique attractions of their home city unless someone comes to visit. Check into local tours or events or better yet, download a local activities app to discover what’s going on in your neck of the woods.

ig7xhjguau7smdy77q2fSource: greatvaluevacations.com

Choose a weekend where there is a music festival or holiday gala going on. Get last minute tickets to a favorite sporting event or check out local fairs and farmer’s markets – all the things you never have time for. Jump on a train and take a day tour of the countryside or simply go to the movies.

Make sure you take that half-day Monday so Sunday evening can be a special evening at home. Hire a traveling spa to provide late afternoon massages and body treatments followed by a bath. Get a personal chef to create a gourmet dinner at home. Nothing is too extravagant – after all, you don’t work by halves, so why do relaxation as if you don’t really mean it?

For Monday, find a local restaurant that serves weekday brunch or breakfast and have your car take you to your lovely morning before returning to work. Make a plan to get each other a small and special gift to celebrate your staycation. And don’t forget to take pictures to record your treasured memories!

To give, or to keep? I’ve already decided what I’d do.

Just occasionally I am sent something that knocks off my socks. This is one of those times.pic-1-treasury

The Botanical Treasury is stunning, and would make a wonderful gift for someone who is interested in art, gardening, or just something on a different level to normal Christmas presents.

(or keep it for yourself and give them chocs. Yes, a much better idea.)

The Botanical Treasury celebrates 40 of the World’s most fascinating plants through rare prints and classic texts.

It contains 40 frameable prints, and though it costs £35 it is cheap at the price.

Within the hard cover are some of the great archival treasures of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The illustrations are breathtaking and the facsimile documents are fascinating.

Experts at Kew have chosen the collection, a collection including the passionflower, and the peony and even includes the Banksia, the Australian plant named after Sir Joseph Banks who travelled with James Cook on his first voyage of discovery.

This particularly moved me, because I have seen Banksia every time I have been in Australia researching a book and the illustration is superb.

Read the classic texts, such as Gerard’s herbal or The Histoirie of Plants 1597 and The Gardener’s Dictionary of 1731.

The Botanical Treasury: Price £35.00

Carlton Books have a great selection of other books, all of which cause me to salivate – but not on the books, of course.

pic-3-champagne

Try this: for both the connoisseur and the newcomer, The Treasures of Champagne by Tom Bruce-Gardyne, celebrates this remarkable liquid by exploring how champagne has become so deeply embedded in the world’s consciousness.

The celebration of bubbly proves, once and for all, that the world would be a poorer place without champagne, as indeed would Christmas.

The Treasures of Champagne Price £ 40.00

Then there is TANKS – 100 years of armoured warfare  by The Tank Museum and Robin Cross

pic-4-tanks

Price £26.00

And on, and on. Have a look at their website and treat yourself, or if you’re noble, someone else.

A Day in the Life of author Suzanne Lambert

pic-1-suzanneAs a happily retired woman I no longer need to leap out of bed shouting at the alarm clock, stumbling around in the dark wondering how on earth it can still feel like the middle of the night and wishing I could go back to bed. Oh those long ago days when each night my head hit the pillow and I slept all night. Now my brain likes to keep my best ideas until the moment I close my eyes. There they are, the people in my book dancing about in my mind’s eye acting out their story.   Why on earth I get my creative inspiration at the most inappropriate times is beyond me.

Many moons ago I studied the art of meditation and decided that a good doze of mindfulness was necessary for a good start to the day.   Today I decided to give this another try. This was going to be the new me, all calm, centred and brimming with creativity. The window cleaner was the first to disturb me by clattering his ladders against my bedroom window. As I lie with the blinds open so I can look at the sky at night, which I love, I leapt out of bed, tripped over the book lying on the floor and banged my knee on the bed before doing a rugby dive to grab the cord and pull the blinds down. Can’t be traumatising my window cleaner this early in the day poor man.

In the morning I like to sit and have a cuppa and chat with my husband over breakfast whilst he watches the news. I say chat, I talk, and he pretends to listen. Today, was going to be an excellent day I told him, regardless of my painful start.

pic-2-ragdoll

My favourite day is one spent with my family. They never fail to encourage me and their support, belief and love make my world a wonderful place to be. Still there is not a day goes by when I don’t wonder how I became a published writer and have to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming. I was loved beyond measure growing up and my mother was one of the kindest and most beautiful souls yet I was never told that dreams came true or to believe in myself. Be thankful for what we have she would say smiling and I always was.

Today, the second person to disturb my morning calm was the postman knocking at my door. I opened the parcel and there it was. My second book, hot off the press. It is so hard to describe the feeling of actually holding the first copy in your hands. I felt tearful as my husband came over and hugged me then rang the family to spread the news. We were all going to celebrate together tonight.

Well, my day started with meditation and ended with a good few glasses of wine. Sounds like a good day all round to me.

BEST ENDEAVOURS BEST IDEAS: Jane Cable on what happens once that digital publishing deal is in the bag

rembranbrancesundayIsn’t it funny how the most important emails just seem to slide into your inbox at the most inopportune times? Late on Monday afternoon my edit notes and first proof came back from Endeavour – just as I was wolfing down an early supper ready to go to Chindi Authors’ monthly meeting. I scanned the email – heart in mouth – only to find myself reeling from the last sentence.
But I had no time to consider the contents – the Chindi meeting was an important one, mainly devoted to planning the final details of our #LovetoRead fundraising evening for Dyslexia Action on Friday. Raffle prizes to co-ordinate, running order to finalise, budget for canapés to be agreed… All whirling around my head in an unusually disorganized fashion while I tried to digest the email bombshell.
To be honest, now I’m used to the idea, it doesn’t seem so bad. Endeavour want me to change the title of the book, that’s all. And to put things in context, the edit notes extended to only three points, the last one prefaced with the phrase ‘this probably isn’t important’. They’re useful and fair and acting on them will certainly improve the book.

Jane Cable, publishing, writing
The problem with changing the title was that I didn’t have a clue where to begin. You become wedded to the name of your book over the years of development and when agent Felicity loved it too I felt sure I’d be able to keep it. Changing my mindset is something akin to turning an oil tanker but I’m determined to do it and come up with something better.
First some guidance was required from Amy, Endeavour’s publishing director and her answer came back clear and strong: look in the Kindle charts for books of a similar genre – and a tip that short phrases from films or songs often do well. Now my knowledge of films is limited to say the least (having not been to the cinema since the third… or maybe fourth… Harry Potter movie came out) but at least I have a neighbour with a first class degree in the subject so his enormous brain was brought to bear on the challenge.
I quickly realised it’s impossible to instil all the nuances of a book into just a few words and that made me try to set out what it’s really about. It isn’t about seahorses (although they feature fairly strongly) and it isn’t about summer (although the action all takes place between April and August). It’s about being damaged, and healing, and moving on with your life. Or not – as the case may be. It looks back at the past – D-Day specifically – or perhaps the past looks forwards at us. No one title is ever going to cover it all.
So now there is a page in my notebook with an increasing number of titles on it. The most obvious ones have inevitably been taken but I have a few which might just do the trick. And I’m still canvassing opinion, so if you have any bright ideas then please, please let me know.

Jane Cable is the author of two independently published romantic suspense novels, The Cheesemaker’s House and The Faerie Tree, and a sporadic contributor to Frost. Jane will be reading from The Faerie Tree at Chindi Author’s #LovetoRead party in Chichester on 18th November. More details here: http://www.chindi-authors.co.uk/news/
The Seahorse Summer (or whatever it ends up being called) tells the tale of how two American soldiers born sixty years apart help forty-something Marie Johnson to rebuild her shattered confidence and find new love. Discover more at www.janecable.com.
