I spend a great deal of my spare time dawdling around art galleries. Every time I wish I knew more about the paintings. As I stand there, appreciating the works, I am aware that I am looking at complicated ideas and histories but not really seeing or understanding the concepts.

Laurence King Publishing has brought out a new series called This is…

I have read This is Goya, This is Monet and This is Kandinsky, by different authors. These books are well presented, with clear and understandable text, accompanied by the artists’ paintings, as well as especially commissioned illustrations.

Let’s take Goya by Wendy Bird with illustrations by Sarah Maycock. Did you know that Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was the first artist deliberately to pursue creating works of art for their own sake? I didn’t.

I was looking at one of his many paintings of haystacks in the National gallery, the other day, (He painted the same haystacks but followed the play of sunlight on them throughout the day). Go and have a look. He never rested, evolving his art way into his eighties. Learn more from Sara Pappworth with illustrations by Aude Van Ryn.

 

Kandinsky looks more like a clerk, or bank manager, than a painter.

He seems almost a cypher, but inside this misleading façade lived a sensitive artist who produced forceful genre defying work. I knew little about his work and am not sure I particularly like it, but this book by Annabel Howard with illustrations by Adam Simpson has created an interest. This in itself is a virtue.

Paddington Goes on Holiday by Paddington (aka David Worsdall)

When my grandpa, who lives in Downley, High Wycombe, told the family that he was going to go to Peru it was suggested that I might go to keep him company. He agreed, but wanted to have a close look to make sure I didn’t weigh too much.I had no idea why at the time.

Anyway, a few days later we finally set off and flew to Lima. Grandpa said I should stock up on marmalade when we get to the hotel because there wasn’t going to be any for a few days. I didn’t like the sound of that.

Then we went to a place called Cuzco where we met local people who were mountain guides and porters and Grandpa had a technical discussion about equipment, medicines and other things. Marmalade was never mentioned.Then off we went.

After two days we reached a very high pass where the air was very thin. I was strangely unaffected but it was a little tiring having to pose for photographs with lots of people who seemed to recognise me including local mountain guides and everybody who had heard about my recent film.

Was this the deepest darkest Peru I had been told about? The scenery was breath-taking.  ‘in more ways than one.’ Grandpa said.

After four days we finished the journey and I perked up when Grandpa said there would be marmalade when we got to Machu Picchu

A fantastic train and boat journey then followed which I enjoyed immensely. I met lots more people.

As you know when you are having fun, time passes very quickly and it was soon time to come back to England.

When we got back to the airport we had to go into London to get home so Grandpa took us round to Marylebone to get the train to High Wycombe. The lady behind the ticket counter said ’I am very sorry to tell you but Marylebone is closed for engineering works you will have to go round the corner to . . . Paddington.’

Grandpa and I just looked at each other and laughed.  I knew I was home.

The Best Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Baking Recipes / The Part Time Vegetarian

I come from a family of food lovers, not of fine dining, but good honest home cooking with the best of locally farmed or grown ingredients, the benefit of growing up in the countryside. One of our closest neighbours when I was little, was the married daughter and her family, of a local farmer who pioneered a farm shop, butchering his own meat and serving local produce over thirty years ago. As we children grew up and played together there were many outings, trips, walks, picnics and visits to the distant seaside. Now the lady in question was also a culinary pioneer and catered for these events with lots of pies, pasties and sweet pastries made with wholemeal flour long before the modern, organic, healthy eating movement began, and I have to say, they were really bad. My sister and I buried them in the sand on the beach and even the Seagulls refused the crusts and half eaten baking.

Now a good many years later as a chef I have to admit I still have an aversion to healthy cooking, compounded by a classical training using a cannon of French recipes, requiring copious amounts of cream, alcohol and butter. But times have changed. We are much more aware of diet, healthy eating and can make informed decisions about what we eat. We can make choices about low fat, low sodium, high fibre, organic, ethically sourced or gluten free dishes or menus. So two of my biggest challenges as a chef are to find inspired, tasty and healthy recipes, like vegetarian dishes a little different to a vegetable lasagne or three bean chilli, and to find reliable alternative methods to make gluten free pastry and biscuits that are slightly more palatable than my memories of buried jam tarts that will be around for hundreds of years.
It is then a real pleasure to have found the Nourish imprint and in particular two very excellent cookery books. The Best Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Baking Recipes by Grace Cheetham and The Part Time Vegetarian by Nicola Graimes. For someone who deals with recipes every day at work and in my own kitchen it is really encouraging to discover some real distinct and different dishes in The Part Time Vegetarian and I like the concept of adapted recipes including meat and fish if you so choose.
From the very moreish, crumbly Butternut squash scones with goats’ cheese served warm from the oven, to a particular favourite the Halloumi Hash, a really clever idea to use up any leftover roast potatoes and vegetables for a Monday lunch, the book is packed with well written, thoughtful recipes. Not only did I learn several new dishes and ingredients I have been inspired to go meat free at least one day a week. I have tried my hand at making Labneh, a simple, tangy Middle Eastern style cheese that was delicious with flatbread and Balsamic cherry tomatoes. I made Okonomiyaki for my lunch, this is another great way to use up a fridge full of leftovers and is a kind of really delicious, grilled Japanese pancake cum pizza. I found this book to be a total joy and a treasure trove of wonderful ideas some of which will no doubt find their way on to one or two restaurant menus.

In the Part-time Vegetarian there is a very adaptable recipe for an asparagus and Parmesan Panzanella, a classic Italian tomato salad that uses up yesterday’s stale bread. Nicola adds chicken for her non vegetarian version. I have done a similar dish on a menu using pan fried king prawns, but I was really impressed by the Best Gluten-free and Dairy-free Baking Recipes book with a recipe for Panzanella. You just don’t think to make a salad using up old bread for someone who is gluten intolerant. The author Grace Cheetham provides a failsafe collection of recipes for gluten breads, biscuits and cakes so you can enjoy the same dishes as anyone who is not intolerant.
I am in total admiration because I have to say these alternative recipes are every bit as delicious and palatable as the gluten originals. You will have to stock up on a few items such as chickpea flour, maize flour and brown rice flour but the results are well worth it from a moist Chilli Cornbread to an excellent Beef Wellington that would impress the most discerning dinner guest. Best of all there are some really astounding chocolate brownies and melt in the mouth Millionaires shortbread that went down amazingly well in the office. So if you are intolerant, on a restricted diet this is a detailed, practical and impressive cook book with recipes that really work and you can the adapt or use in lots more of your cooking.
If you know any chefs you will be aware that they are seldom wrong, well I would like to admit that there is a big place for some of these recipes in my work and I am very pleased to have found both of these books. If I am not going to swallow my own word’s I am at least going to do the next best thing make another batch of gluten free Millionaires shortbread and swallow the results of reading someone else’s.

Month 9 of my Reading Challenge By Frances Colville

My first two books this month both dealt with hugely important issues.  I Do Not Sleep by Judy Finnigan   focuses on grief and in particular coming to terms with the death of a child, while the main theme of Love You Better by Natalie K Martin is domestic violence.  Both were interesting reads, but neither wowed me.  The storyline in I Do Not Sleep struck me as unrealistic and contrived, and I didn’t feel any real empathy with the main character.  The book was somewhat redeemed by its ending, so it’s worth persevering.  Love You  Better felt like a missed opportunity and the ending was obvious throughout which detracted from my involvement with the progress of the story.

Next I turned to another of the books on my Agatha Christie pile – on my mind no doubt because of visiting Agatha Christie’s former holiday home, Greenway, in Devon last month.  This one The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was one I picked up at last year’s Cheltenham Literary Festival and  I was swiftly transported back to Agatha Christie world with all its preconceptions and prejudices.  You always get what you expect with an Agatha Christie – and there are times when nothing else will do.  This one didn’t disappoint.

All of which reminded me of a new Agatha Christie story.  Sophie Hannah (whose psychological thrillers I also enjoy) has with the approval of the Agatha Christie family written The Monogram Murders featuring Hercule Poirot, arguably Christie’s most famous character.  I wondered if anyone else could effectively recreate Poirot and his world – and my answer having read and enjoyed The Monogram Murders is a slightly confused yes and no.  Hercule Poirot is well recreated and the storyline is as intriguing and enjoyable as any other Poirot mystery.  And yet I would never mistake this for an original Agatha Christie.  Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be.  Perhaps Sophie Hannah intended all along for this to be an updated, twenty-first century version. To me it did indeed feel more like one of her own psychological thrillers with a cast of Agatha Christie characters rather than a mystery of the type Christie herself wrote.  The confusing thing is that I don’t mind that at all.  As I’ve said before I enjoy reading both books by Sophie Hannah and books by Agatha Christie.  So a fusion of the two was always going to work for me.

Rosanna Ley is the author of The Saffron Trail which is partly set in my local town of Bridport and the neighbouring town of Lyme Regis –  a fact which added to my enjoyment as I ticked off all the places I recognise and love.  The story also takes us to Cornwall, Morocco and the US and the descriptions of all these places is done very well.  It’s a good story too with believable and likeable characters.  This is the first  book by this author I have read, but I will certainly look out for another.

So it turns out (by chance rather than design) that all the books I’ve read this month have been books telling stories – and I’ve enjoyed them all to a greater or lesser extent.  They have provided relaxing and pleasant entertainment.  But entertainment isn’t the only reason I read; I also want to be educated, stimulated and challenged.  So now I find myself wanting a book which meets at least one, and preferably more of those criteria.  The only question is: what will it be?

Blimey, talk about tense …

In Twisted, Jack Miller’s been playing a dangerous game, and the stakes are about to be raised.

I read the first few lines and was hooked.

Poor old DI John Samuels is on the trail of a bank robber, but he has no idea of the people he’s dealing with. In particular, let me introduce you to Spook, who is one of the most balmy and evil characters I’ve come across. How on earth did B A Morton conjure her up, let alone all the others. You see, so few are conventionally good people, but they’re so interesting. I was totally engrossed, and found myself – understanding? Well no, not understanding why they were as they were, but close to that.

The pace, the story, the characters are all spot on. So, let’s get back to the book: the ruthless robber is Miller, for whom bank robbery is simply a means to an end. Wounded while making his escape Miller has half a million in used notes and a hostage that wasn’t part of the plan. As the police close in, Otto, the crime boss wants his cash, and someone wants Miller silenced  – forever.

Then there’s the weird misfit Spook. Unstable and fearless, she’ll go to any lengths to get what she wants. Then a judge’s daughter disappears and evidence points at Miller. It is then that Miller discovers just how crazy Spook really is. (Ah ha, but I knew it all along, so very there).  With every twist and turn, and even with the rapid pace, Morton keeps us with her.

Published by Caffeine Nights, Twisted surely lends itself to a series. I do hope so.

B A Morton lives in the North East of England, and writes across a number of genres, including crime, romance, horror and historical fiction. She lives in a cottage built on the remains of a medieval chapel.

She is a member of the Crime Writers’ Association. In 2011 her debut novel, Mrs Jones, a crime thriller set in New York, took second place in the international literary competition, The Yeovil Prize, and launched her extremely successful career.

Rory Nicole Ogden Acting InterviewsChild actress Rory Nicole Ogden has accomplished more since November 2012 than many artists twice her age. In winter 2012, she made the decision to fulfil her dream of becoming an actress and before she knew it, Rory was auditioning for (and getting) small roles in films. Then came a short film called “Just a Kid,” a delightful story about a young girl (Julie) who tries to cheer up her brother after his heart is broken. Rory landed the role, and that began a trend that continues to now.

 

What made you become an actress?

I fell in love with the idea of being in the movies and TV when I was young.  I thought the movie Transformers was so incredible I felt like I had to be in that life. I kept asking my Mother but she thought it was a phase.  I never stopped asking so my Mom talked to a friend that is an actress in LA.  The friend said to put me in classes and when I realized how much work it really was I would most likely change my mind.  The classes were two hours away and once a week for 12 weeks my Mom would drive me down there and sit in her car and wait for me.  I discovered that I loved it more than I thought, even with all the work it really takes.

 

 Did you train and, if so, where?

My classes taught me about Improv, Slating, Monologues and working with other actors.  I didn’t realize there was so much work that went into every aspect of acting but I loved it.  I still use the monologue I picked there because it really suits me.  One of the important things I learned there is if I screw something up like my Monologue to just go with it, if I don’t show people I messed up they wont know.  Its acting right lol!

Career Highlight

I just finished up a project for Cartoon Networks Adult Swim that will be airing in Nov or Dec.  It was such a unique experience.  They did a 3D scan of my body so they could make an exact replica of my body.  Than they made silicone molds of my face to reproduce my face for some neat things they did in the project that I can’t say yet!  What other 13 year old gets to do such cool things? Cross your fingers I get to go back and do more.

 

Lowest Point

A student film that I did very early in my career.  It was a bad production done in a house with a dog that could be smelled 20 feet away and cats and more dust and cobwebs than a Halloween house.  We would get there 10 minutes before our call time and the team would show up 45 minutes later.  It’s why I very rarely do student films.

 

 Hardest Thing About Being an Actress.

 

Finding time to practice and learn scripts while having a normal life as a teenager.  For adult actors its often their only job but as a student If I miss school for work I still have to make up everything I miss while doing my current work. My Mom’s condition to keep acting is to get good grades.  So I don’t have a choice there!  I also play Varsity Field Hockey as the Goalie so missing games hurts the team. I also love going out with friends and doing lots of social activities.  Twice I have been lucky enough to do roles with my best friend.  Most of the time you go on set and you don’t know anyone and that’s tough being a kid.

Do you make enough money from acting, if not, what else do you do?

I have saved some money up for College from acting but I also like to spend it :)  I plan on attending NYU or UCLA.  To study acting and film making.  My passion is gong around to Jacob Whitesides concerts and getting VIP tickets.  It’s a good thing my Mom likes Jacob!

 

Best and Worst audition.

 

Best

Just a Kid which was my first audition.  I had so much fun with the Director Michael Scotti Jr.  He was so fun to work with and Immediately felt the character was perfect for me.  A week later I was offered the role.  The Director later told my Mom the part was down to two people and when he was deciding he got a Thank you Note from my Mom and that sealed the deal!

Worst

I had two worst auditions.  Once was for someone I had worked for before who I loved but I went to the audition coming right off the plane from Florida with a case of sun poisoning.  I was having trouble talking and I didn’t know why I actually went to the hospital after and my tongue had swollen up with the sun poisoning.  Needless to say I didn’t get the part.

The other bad audition I had was the student film I did that was a nightmare.  I was put on the spot to tell an embarrassing story and I told a story of my mothers and I could see her turning red while I told it.  I don’t think she wanted it told.  I must have babbled for 15 minutes.  I never expected to get the part but I did.

 

Advice for other actors.

 

Make time for all your dreams don’t just make time for acting.  Play sports, go to dances and do all the things other teens do.  In fact I don’t tell my classmates I act but sometimes it comes out.  One time in Computer class we were learning how to use Google and the teacher had us Google the person next to us and my classmate freaked out and began telling everyone when he saw my website and IMDB.  Also if you really want to act start with training it’s the most important thing you can do.<

What is the most important thing for actors to do to improve their career?

I think you have to keep learning and doing different stuff.  Like I prefer comedy its a lot more fun but I have been doing other stuff so I can show that I can do anything.  I don’t want CD’s to look at me and pass on me because they only think I can do comedy.

Role Models

Selena Gomez- I have a lot of respect for her.  I always thought she was a good actress.  I grew up watching her on Wizards of Waverly Place.  It became my favorite show.  Selena is also a great singer another passion of mine.  Recently she disclosed she has Lupus and it makes me realise what a strong woman she is to be able to do all of the things she does even when she is sick.

Funniest Thing that happened on Set

While filming my first film just a kid I had to ride my bike down the street.  The DP, Director and Producer were in a van following me down the street filming me.  A person saw this and called the police thinking I was going to be abducted.  The police came rushing to the scene.  After questioning me and them they realised it was only a film.

The Rugby World Cup is well under way and if you weren’t lucky enough to nab yourself a ticket, hot-foot it down to Chicago Rib Shack and treat yourself to a sensational side of Ribs with your Rugby!

The Chicago Rib Shack was born from a delicious dream, the owner, the late Bob Payton had over 30 years ago. He wanted to bring the most authentic American BBQ restaurant to Europe and boy did he. Since then hundreds of restaurants across London have followed suit trying to replicate this All-American BBQ style but none with as much determination and passion as Chicago Rib Shack. The first Chicago Rib Shack opened in Knightsbridge to a glowing reception however after Bob Payton died the restaurant sadly closed. Just three years ago, Chicago Rib Shack re-opened and boasts a menu curated with as much love and soul as when Bob had his dream all those years ago.

We were privileged enough to try out their mouth-watering menu and cocktails whilst enjoying a game of footy on the TV. Naturally the Ribs were my top option all round, but as I was dining with a Veggie, opted for the Baby Back Ribs instead of the Ribshack Top 4 which also includes Beef Ribs… next time for sure. The Ribs were succulent, tender and melt in your mouth delicious with a side of Sweet Potato Fries and Mac n Cheese all three complimented each other just right. The portions were generous but the food was so delicious I could have easily had more out of pure appreciation for the treats they had to offer. We also ordered a portion of Mac and Cheese bites, I must confess I am a Mac and Cheese connoisseur so if this is on the menu, it’s getting ordered. The Mac and Cheese side order also comes with optional Jalapeños or Bacon but we chose to get it plain. My favourite thing about it was the sauce was just the perfect balance of creamy and light, not too stodgy like some, not overly salted like a lot of other restaurants, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The Mac and Cheese bites were like little Arancini balls filled with yummy Mac and Cheese, again the perfect consistency without the excessive salt and stodge, served with a delicious tomato jam. Alongside the Ribs, these complimented perfectly with yummy tender meat. For the Veggie option we opted for the Veggie Stack Burger which is a Grilled Courgette, Sweet Potato and Aubergine topped with Red Pesto, Goats Cheese and Rocket. This could only be described as the most delicious tasting Veggie option which we’ve ever had and trust us, we eat out a lot. As well as just Ribs, Chicago Rib Shack offer a range of Salads, Grilled Chicken and Fish Cakes just in case you don’t fancy any Ribs but to be honest, major food envy will consume you and once you’ve had a taste you will be making your way back here to try all of the other options on the menu.

The overall ambience of the place is laid back and in true American style, welcoming and friendly. We dined at the Clapham branch and being set under the arches, the interior was enough to create a relaxed atmosphere but still special enough for a date night or special evening out. The staff were every bit as wonderful as the food and went above and beyond our call of duty, even letting us order cocktails off menu even though the selection was more than ample!
