Shiraz Rosé Jacob’s Creek Wine Review

wine, wine review, roséI have to point out that I am partial to a Rosé. In fact, it is one of my favourite types of wine. That does not mean that all Rosé is equal however. This Shiraz Rosé from Jacob’s Creek is the official wine of Wimbledon. It is fresh, fruity and well balanced. It goes well with strawberries and cream of course, otherwise it would have no place at Wimbledon. This is a crisp wine with characters of fresh berry fruit. It has a finish of tempered spice and quince. This is a perfect summer rosé you can’t go wrong with. It is dark in colour which usually means the rosé is very sweet but this is not the case here. Great taste and well balanced.

Flash Fiction: A Cuckoo in the Nest by Author Jane Carling

Flash Fiction- A cuckoo in the Nest by author Jane Carling.

Sitting at the back of the Crematorium, the handcuffs that bound her to two prison guards chaffed Josie’s wrists. She watched her husband’s coffin being carried to its final resting place to ‘I did it my Way’. Only one wreath adorned the casket, red roses, like his blood.

Rachel Hunt, dressed in a black, sat alone in the front pew, where Josie should have been.

How had it happened? They tell me I killed him, but I can’t remember.

It was last May, when spring hailed the first call of the cuckoo, that Rachel had returned from the Costa del Crime in the guise of a deadly blonde, now calling herself Samantha. That’s when the friend requests on Facebook began, and it took a while for Josie to realize from the profile that Samantha was actually Rachel, or rats’ tails as she was known in school.

Out of curiosity Josie clicked the accept button, a click she would live to regret.

“Why the new name?”  Josie replied.  A few minutes later messenger popped up.  “I’m a widow and want a new way of life in the countryside, a whole new beginning.  Don’t you ever want to reinvent yourself?”

Josie pondered,  “Why would I? I must go, Roger’s favourite risotto is ready, will talk soon.  Stay in touch.”

As the service continued Josie clenched her fists. The handcuffs rattled. I should have known better, she thought, and so should Roger. He was a successful businessman, for goodness sake, so how could he have been taken in by this woman? Had he always wanted a blonde in his life, was that it?

She winced as she remembered the simpering. “Oh Roger you are so clever, oh Roger, you are so witty. Oh Roger…”

Then the texts.  “Good night my love, good morning darling, and laters babe…”  Laters babe?  Oh perlease. The lights reflected off her handcuffs. She should have checked his mobile sooner. Josie bit her lip. She recalled Roger’s denials and accusations when she’d confronted him. He’d argued that it was all in Rachel’s head, totally one-sided and that he loved her, Josie. Oh Roger what a big dick you were.

There was a draught as the door opened and the detective in charge sat down behind her.  Now what?  Can’t I just have today?  He whispered to one of the guards and as the vicar signaled for the curtains to begin be closed. Her cuffs were released and Stairway to Heaven began playing. Confused, Josie rubbed her wrists. ‘You’re free,’ whispered the guard. She placed her head in her hands as the curtains began to close and wept.

Rachel was hurrying out before the curtains closed. Too late though. She was arrested and bundled into a police car.  The detective waited until Josie had composed herself, then explained that formerly undiscovered CCTV footage had captured a blonde at scene of the crime, wielding the knife. It was Rachel Pratt, hustler, renowned con-woman and now a murderer.  Josie was free to go.

Later, sitting in her garden watching kites soar into the deep red sky as the sun set over the Chiltern Hills, images of that fateful day finally returned.  Roger had stepped in front of the blade that was not meant for him. Her husband had saved her life.

The distant call of a cuckoo broke the silence.

Celebrate Afternoon Tea Week Italian-style

The impressive afternoon tea stand at Cucina Casellina, Me London Hotel, The StrandAfternoon Tea Week is coming – it’s on 10-16 August – and it’s a very good idea to prioritise this wonderful English tradition. But it’s an even better idea to add an Italian slant to that tradition, which is exactly what the gorgeous rustic Italian restaurant Cucina Asallina, in London, has done.

English sandwiches? Pah!

Forget those sandwich fingers with the crusts cut off and with a slithers of cucumber inside. The savouries in this exquisite afternoon leave English sandwiches in the shadows. Just look at the bottom layer on that fine tea stand pictured above. We’re talking homemade focaccia courgette, sun-dried tomato and pesto; and homemade crunchy ciabatta with smoked salmon; and Stracchino cheese; and behind those lurks another ciabatta with bresaola, rocket and Parmesan. The bread is made on the premises. And the fillings are, wait for it… filling! All too often afternoon tea is altogether too sticky affair in which you move onto the sweet stuff because, quite frankly, the savouries are not good enough. And this is not the case here. This afternoon tea is a meal.

Unforgettable amaretto

When you do finally move on to the sweet delicacies, you will be faced with classic scones, clotted cream and jam and home-baked amaretto biscuits which make the packet versions seem like digestives. These amaretti are not so full of almond flavouring and are beautifully soft and light, with a very gentle crunch.

On the top layer of the stand you will find a variety of exceptional sweet treats, but my favourite was the one with the Italian touch – the blackberry tiramisu. It’s mild and fruity and tastes a bit like an elegant mini trifle.

Tea brewing perfection

There’s an impressive choice of teas. I tried Chai (smoky and refreshing) and followed up with Palace Blend (which was very like English Breakfast). And here Cucina Asallina has a nice touch. They brew the tea to the right strength and serve it in the pot, having taken the tea out. The result: no stewing! You will very much appreciate that on your second cup.

Find it hard to eat all of the sweet stuff and don’t want it to go to waste? The gorgeous Italian staff offer a takeaway box. Perfect.

Turn afternoon tea into lunch

Italian Afternoon Tea at Cucina Asallina is served at daily between 1-5pm. Price £29 per  or £35 with a glass of proseccio. My recommendation: go at 1pm: this is a delightful lunch. Rise of the Enemy by Rob Sinclair Book Review

Rise of the Enemy by Rob Sinclair Book Review

Everyone had a breaking point. Carl Logan might just have found his.

A routine mission to Russia, goes wrong. Carl Logan’s cover is blown, and he’s transported to hell, one he thought he’d never see again.

This is a novel of action, suspense, doubt, and ultimately… No, I won’t tell you. Read it and see.

Written in two time zones, Sinclair manages to draw his character into, and out of, so many ups and downs that in the end, we don’t know who he can trust either. Carl, however, powers on, hanging on to the inner strength which his mentor helped him to develop, but is his mentor who he thought he was? So many page turning questions. Just as a thriller should be.

Rob Sinclair, a forensic accountant for a global accounting firm, was challenged by his wife to write a ‘can’t put down thriller’. He did, Dance with the Enemy, and it proved to be a hit. Here is the next in the Enemy Series.

Top 10 Tips On How To Look Amazing In Pictures

Here is my definitive advice to all of you wanting to get amazing images every time no matter what. It’s all about angles and lighting. Here I will share with you a my top tips.

This will help you when you need a go to quick fire list to remind you. I have been a photographer for many years and grew up in a house with a darkroom and studio. My father was a photographer and artist. My mother was a model, so you can see where I get the passion for fashion, style and photography from.

Along with my main job as session nail technician, its all about creating amazing images. My desire to write for you guys comes from a need to help others. Be it beauty advice, great recipes or fashion and style inspiration. Its also a little photography outlet for myself and my husband. All the articles I write need pictures and what better way to get creative than set up little shoots for each and every one!

How To Look Good In Pictures

Top tips on how to look amazing in pictures.

  1. 1. Wear clothing that you feel amazing in. If you know your going out and having tons of pictures taken throughout the day or night its important to feel good from various angles. If you hate your upper arms then wear a dress that hides the tops of the arms. You will instantly feel more confident. Or failing that dash out and purchase MAC Face & Body. Most makeup artists I work with use this for runway shows, magazine shoots and editorials. I own a fair few bottles in different shades and its my best buddy if my arms are looking a little blotchy or pasty. Our secret ok!
  2. Invest in the best underwear. Tight and ill-fitting garments just look terrible, especially if shot from behind. Purchase t-shirt bras and seam free pants. Nude is always best in my book. Yes I do own rather a lot of Bridget style pants and I’m not ashamed to admit it.
  3. Don’t use a flash. Natural lighting is always best. I totally hate flash photography when done the wrong way. It can make makeup and clothing look terrible, whats worse.. when food is involved. Don’t do it…Whenever I ever see that dreaded flash go off snapping a beautiful plate of food I die inside just a little every time!! Turn it off and see how it looks. Yes I know there are times when your in a dark restaurant…Then that is telling you its not appropriate. If you really need to snap your food, then go out mid afternoon!
  4. Cloudy days are actually perfect for portrait photography as the sky has a natural light diffuser.
  5. Always turn to your side as this will create a softer prettier look for us girlies. If you need to lift an arm and place it on a hip do so.
  6. Use sunglasses, bags or a hat if you don’t know what to do with your hands.
  7. Practice posing in the mirror. It sounds narcissistic but it will help you the more that you do it.
  8. Always wear heels as this will create confidence.
  9. If you are having your picture taken from the front tuck your arms into your sides as this will create a longer leaner frame.
  10. Lastly Smile. Even if your not looking at the camera. You might look a little crazy but when the images come through you will look radiant and stunning.

Lentil Curry

This is a very easy, simple and staple dish in our house and we create this on this days when its drizzly outside. When the wet weather sets in its time to get those spices out and rustle up a big pot of hot and delicious happiness. Whats great about this recipe is that its a vegan meal that can be adapted for sides, or of a whopper of a main meat eaters meal. All you need to do is add a little extra sustenance towards the end of the cooking time. The best bit though I have saved till last….And thats that this dish is ultra kind on those hips as I didn’t you any oil or fats when cooking.Lentil Curry Lentil Curry Lentil Curry-3 Lentil Curry-4

To create this meal for 4 people you will need the following list of ingredients.

  • 1 pint od water
  • Pinch of salt and pepper
  • 2 tsp of  ground Garlic or 2 bulbs of the fresh kind
  • 1/2 a bag of Rice
  • 2 Naan breads

Lentil Curry Method

Now here is the best bit….Its a one pot wonder that takes minutes to prepare and is wildly amazing.

  1. Chop up the onions and carrots.
  2. Then drop them into the pan. No need for oil as this is an ultra healthy dish.
  3. Add all the other ingredients and bring to the boil.
  4. Let it all simmer for about 1 hour and keep checking to make sure that it doesn’t stick to the bottom.
  5. Then boil the rice and serve with the Naan bread. Simple and so easy.
  6. Add cooked meat to the mixture 10 minutes before serving if your a carnivorous type!
