I’ve Got the Hots for Boomtown 2015

Fireworks and ting.

Fireworks and ting.

Summer isn’t covering itself in glory at the moment. In fact right now it feels like it has already been and gone like an unreliable lover, leaving nothing but a warm, sticky slug-trail of sweat and frizzy hair in its wake. Like an unreliable lover.

But snap out of it, because we’ve still got two months of it to go, hooray! And if you, like me, would like to squeeze one more festival into your sticky, puffy-faced existence then let me take this opportunity to recommend Boomtown Fair.

Boomtown is an unusual festival. For a start it’s probably the only one in the world that took the global financial crisis as its founding inspiration. Back in 2009, its organisers surveyed the unfolding doom of the Western economic order and thought, presumably, “good time to put on a new festival”. Taking those tedious real world events as a loose foundation, they conceived Boomtown, complete with its fictional backstory of a mining town fallen into Mad Max-style anarchy after the gold ran out.

There have been six chapters in the Boomtown story, with a new one written each year. The last Fair saw an election which culminated in the now ex-Mayor of Boomtown chasing his victorious opponent out of the city following some nifty time travel-related skullduggery courtesy of a 40-foot mechanical alien spider called Arcadia. Follow? Excellent. You can read the full story of all six previous festivals here.

Boomtown wasn’t the first festival to have a fictional narrative running through the proceedings of course (Shangri-La, Glastonbury’s after-hours mecca, got there just a few months before in June 09) but, boy, do they do it well. Each one of the eight ‘town districts’ has its own story and stages, and a dizzying array of characters, played by actors, obviously (I suppose), jolly things along.

If all this is in danger of sounding a bit twee, the festival itself certainly isn’t. 38,000 people attended last year. This year the capacity is 49,999. Those making the trip this August will unearth a rich seam (because it’s a mining town) of underground (ha!) talent and performers. Boomtown’s organisers prefer to book a lesser-known but judiciously-chosen roster of acts which cover the full gamut of what you might call the ‘non-commercial’ genres*. Hence you’ll find house and garage in Barrio Loco where DJ EZ is headlining, reggae and dancehall in Trenchtown with Stephen Marley (son of Bob), Ska and Punk in Chinatown and so on and so on. 500 artists are playing across 24 stages in all.

The arts, crafts, massages and whatnot of Whistler’s Green probably deserve a mention too, although with the humidity what it is as I write this the idea of being drizzled in oil and rubbed about by a stranger is just filling me with a clammy sense of foreboding.

Anyway, I urge you to get your beautiful selves to Boomtown. And maybe bring an ice box.

*if your tastes are more commercial then you’d probably be better off looking elsewhere. Maybe V-Fest. Yes, go to V-Fest…

BoomTown Fair takes place in Winchester on the 13-16th August. Tickets here.

Sip & Learn was set up by French duo, Marie-Anne and wine expert Sylvain in December 2014.

‘I love wine but tend to panic when asked to taste or choose it. I used to call my friend Sylvain or text pictures of wines to get his help all the time.  I’ve always wanted to learn about wine but going to classes sounds too scary and pompous. So together with Sylvain, we started thinking about how we could help people like me discover and understand how wine works without getting bored or feeling shy at a wine tasting class.  The result: Sip & Learn. We hope you enjoy it.’

Re-Gen is a range of specialised skin care products that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. Re-Gen products range are formulated using Vitamins A and E, as well as calendula, lavender and rosemary oil. They also contain PCL liquid (PCL Liquid is a laboratory recreation of the preen gland oil of ducks) which treats skin by producing a thin hydrophobic film on the area of skin treated, preventing it from drying out.

I have been using Re-Gen Oil on my stretchmarks for a while now and they are definitely less noticeable. They have faded from the angry purple they were. They are still a little pink, I am confident that they will become more silvery and less noticeable with continued use. The oil also smells nice. Considering how good Re-Gen oil is, I am impressed at how affordable it is. The RRP is £5.99 for 75ml and £7.99 for 125ml. High quality and easy on the purse: what more could you want?

The designers are so talented, both are really lovely and the entire company where some of the nicest people we have met in a long time. They all ooze passion for style and grace. Each item we pondered on left a mark on my heart. We excitedly chatted about a fashion shoot and I for one have my little eye on one very stunning strapless numbers for an event coming up soon.

Hemyca’s range is for all ages and would look just fantastic on anyone in their late teens to a more mature lady. The cut of the pieces are so well thought out. It had my brain working overtime, back to my early fashion design technology and pattern cutting days! Precise, pretty and perfect are the only words to describe this incredible luxurious new line.

Hydropetide Product Review

I was asked to do a Hydropetide Product Review recently. I was lucky enough to be sent a few items to try out. And they have become my go to face care over the last 2 months. Now you all know I try all sorts of beauty products being in the professional industry. I won’t just do a review after 2-5 days either. I like to give the product a chance for my skin cells to catch up. You need around 28 days to really see a difference when using something new. This is the length of time it takes for the skin to renew itself from base layer to the dermis. Samples of things you get in Boots or drug stores really are only to check that your not allergic to the products. So don’t be disappointed if that new cream doesn’t preform as well as you think it should. Their are 2 main factors to this…One is the reason I have explained and the other is that the strength of over the counter skin care is usually like making a cupa with a tea bag that’s been used 10 times or so!!! So watered down its no wonder those wrinkles aren’t vanishing faster. Pro products are always a better investment.

First up is Solar Defense, it’s a broad spectrum sun protector. This basically means it has both UVA and UVB filters. UVA’s are the nasty rays that age the skin and UVB’s are the ones that will burn. In turn if you burn their are further UVC Rays that harm the skin in the form of cancer. So ladies and gents wear a broad spectrum factor cream every day of every year. Come rain or shine. I’m always told my skin is perfect…Well it’s a combination of a healthy diet, loads of water and incredible skin care.

Hydropetide Product Review

Solar Defence glides on and its consistency feels slightly grainy at first but then the micro beads burst delivering its benefits to the skin. It blends and self adjusts to the natural skin tones you already have. It is quite frankly amazing. It smoothes out the completion and flawlessly covers the skin all ready for your foundation. It also contains anti inflammatories and antioxidants. This will help you fight the horrid signs of ageing and be your new best friend I can assure you of that!

It’s a non-greasy oil free sunscreen packed with moister. Really rich in protein and it also helps to decrease the secretion of oil that can build up though it the day. You know that shiny lack lustre appearance you might get mid afternoon, when all you really want to do is reapply your foundation once again.

With is skin adjusting properties it perfectly camouflages mild hyperpigmentation and redness. It creates a perfect even, flawless, matte finish. Containing Aloe, niacin and hyaluronic acid it perfectly balances hydration. In turn it transforms fine lines and wrinkles. Now that’s what us women in our 40’s really need.

Eye Authority cream immediately brightens any dark circles you may have and it softens expression lines. It will decrease wrinkles and lastly it helps banish puffiness. Phew that’s a lot to expect isn’t it. But after using this for 6 weeks I can honestly say it works. Now my first impression of this was a little different…it irritated my eyes. Yes I’m honest with you all. This was in fact all my own fault. You need the smallest amount and one tube should actually last you 6 months. The rate I was putting it on it would have only lasted me all of 3-4 weeks!! Less is more in this case! It contains Hesperdin known for its warming and circulatory benefits. Hence the eye irritation after applying a large pea sized amount around each eye! I have noticed (after using a 1/8 of a pea size little drop to each eye) a lift to my eyes and my dark circles are a thing of the past.

It contains 13 different peptides and a small amount of HA (hyaluronic acid) that perfectly hydrate the eyes. Normally you have to avoid using HA around the delicate eye area as it will cause puffiness. HA holds 1000 times its body weight in water so it’s really hydrating and can plump out the skin. Perfect for the face but not around the eyes. Eye Authority has just the right amount that smoothes out pesky fine lines perfectly without causing eye make up to crease or feel heavy. Just don’t use too much! Both products are firmly in my bathroom cabinet and will be I feel for a long time! They have an extensive range of lifting products I’m keen to review now after finding this brand.

5 Film Sets That You Can Go Explore

If you love films and travel, you might want to combine the two on a pilgrimage to the sets of your favourite movies. Here are our top 5 film sets that you can go and explore.

6205881319_caa28675aa_o

  1. Jurassic Park – Kualoa Ranch, Oahu

Originally set to be filmed in Costa Rica, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 mega blockbuster Jurassic Park was relocated to the craggy, prehistoric landscape of Oahu, Hawaii. Standing in for the mythical Isla Nublar, Kualoa Ranch is arguably one of the stars of the film, as it sets the mood and tone for this ‘science gone too far’ escapade. Visitors to Kualoa today can take guided ATV tours of the vast acreage, also used as a filming location for Lost and Godzilla.

Harry_Potter_Leavesden_entrance

  1. Harry Potter – Warner Brother Studios, Leavesden

A perennial favourite of kids of all ages, the 8 Harry Potter films were all shot in and around London and Oxford. A specialised team of designers, visual effects experts and artists built the elaborate sets—and you can visit them to this day! Take a wand waving class, get up close to prosthetics and costumes actually used during filming, and of course – visit the unbelievable shop at the end. If you want to catch a glimpse of filming locations around the city, head to the Millennium Footbridge, King’s Cross Station (home to the iconic Platform 9 ¾) and Leadenhall Market.

Görlitz-Karstadt-Jugendstil

  1. The Grand Budapest Hotel- Görlitzer Warenhaus Department Store, Görlitz, Germany

Fans of Wes Anderson’s quirky alternate universe often cite The Grand Budapest Hotel as their favourite of his films. Nominated for 9 Oscars in 2014, this visually arresting movie was shot primarily in a department store, not a hotel. While the hotel’s façade was a model (a technique that Anderson often employs), the interior shots were all filmed in this handsome art nouveau department store, built in 1913 and located 60 miles from Dresden. Open daily, you can treat yourself to a bit of retail therapy while you walk through the halls of cinematic history.

Ghostbusters_Firehouse

  1. Ghostbusters, Tribeca Firehouse, New York City

This 1984 classic is beloved by generations of fans who grew up watching the films, television series, cartoons and playing with Slimer action figures – and that is why so many fans flock to the Tribeca Firehouse at 14 North Moore Street in New York City. Now valued at over $16 million due to its newly trendy location, the newest reboot of the film due next year may not be able to afford to hire the space!

1901krvxtyrm0jpg

  1. Friday the 13th, NoBeBoSco campground, Blairstown, New Jersey

If you love scary slasher flicks and you want to pay homage to Jason at the fictional Camp Crystal Lake, you will have to get the permission of an organisation so wholesome that it is the antithesis of Friday the 13th: The Boy Scouts of America! ‘Camp Crystal Lake’ is actually set on the NoBeBoSco campground in New Jersey, and during the off season they will occasionally grant permission to film buffs who want to wander through the original cabins.

These filming locations are iconic, interesting and affordable (or even free) to visit. Do you have any others you would like to see added to this list? Leave your suggestions in the comment section below!

He was living in London UK for 15 years before returning to Australia in June 2014 accompanied by his wife Linda. Their son Jonathon, 28 years old, returned to Australia in 2012. During his working life Ross was employed in various roles in the Telecommunications industry in Australia and later in the UK. His interests include writing poetry, lyrics for songs and family history. He is also interested in researching to help find a cure for PD.

We published his feature on his work, and life a few days ago, with a promise of his poetry, and song-writing. Here it is. Enjoy.

Ross Mabey's poem and song

Poetry, A Song Of Life.

Poetry is a very personal thing,

That can lift your heart and make it sing.

Its rhythms can have a beat, like a song,

That makes you move your feet.

Or, it can be an intellectual panacea,

For those who seek life’s perfections,

Expressed in words of structured verse.

Which soothe the ripples, of this Universe.

Or, it can be a song of life,

That speaks of truth, love, joy, toil and strife.

Whatever, captures your imagination,

It can be the emotion, that adds to the tapestry of life.

Whatever appeals to your Universe,

Is hidden in words, rhymes and verse.

Their potency is felt by those,

Who feel the need to write, in anything but prose.

Through majestic forests and valleys I now roam.

Learning To Listen To Your Body

Recently I came down with a bout of stress related illness and I beat myself up over having time off. I felt like I was letting everyone down. Now we all get sick and we can’t help it. When it happens we all need to listen to our bodies and just go with it. It’s harder said than done learning to listen to your body and not push yourself so hard. I’m the worst for this as I will try to everything. Work full time, commute an hour to and from work, do photography at the weekends and evenings then edit those pictures and schedule articles on my days off. When I tell people what my week is like the response is always “How the heck do you do it all” In truth I have no idea. So it would make sense that my body sent me a persuasive little message. Sarah just stop….Slow down your not ever going to be a super hero. Stepping outside ones self and looking in as though you were a good friend is something we all need to do now and then.

Learning to Listen To Your Body-1

Reevaluating your life is a good thing. If you need some time off to recharge your energy then so be it.

My top 10 Tips For Listening To Your Body

1. Take a deep breath and take care of No1. Sometimes this is as important as looking after others.
2. Don’t stress out over the fact you can’t manage to do everything. These are what I have had to preach to myself over the last week!
3. Make a nice cup of tea, take a bath, get into clean pjs and get back in bed.
4. Turn off your phone when you get in from work or at 6pm
5. Don’t let others make you feel bad that you need to take care for yourself.
6. Learn to say NO.
8. Know your limits and don’t push yourself too hard.
9. Relax as stress builds up and can cause serious health problems.
10. Finally grab a good book and let your body really relax with out social media and drift off to sleep!

I believe it’s important for us to help others in life. If your feeling stressed out or poorly then learning to listen to your body can help with a lifetime of difficulties.
