Taking on the RoboReflex Challenge

On a cold day in May, at a hidden location in East London, I, Junior Smart, stepped up to the Roboflex challenge. A formidable task which involved entering into an arena armed with both machine gun and pistol and taking down ten targets as fast as possible and beating the time set by the latest iteration of the Robocop franchise.

In case you failed to see it whilst it was in the cinema, Robocop is a re-telling of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic in which father and skilled cop Alex Murphy (played here by Joel Kinnaman of Easy Money, TV’s The Killing) is critically injured in the line of duty and transformed by mega-company OmniCorp – headed by CEO Raymond Sellars (a role carried well by Michael Keaton – star of Batman and Need For Speed) into a part-man, part-robot police officer designed to rid Detroit of crime.

Fortunately for me I didn’t need to be critically injured in the line of duty to experience the delights of the warehouse challenge; a challenge where the newly ‘renovated’ Murphy has to ‘prove his worth’ to OmniCorp in a heart-racing shoot out against the clock. Nonetheless, even though I knew this event was for fun I have to admit my heart was pounding; it wasn’t just me who was taking part in the challenge, around me stood other reporters from different magazines and although we were all professionals and smiled nicely at each other, deep down we all knew that no one wanted to come last and go home to our editors with our tails between our legs. The stage was therefore set.

Robo_Reflexes_Experience_Day_008My first job was to be suited in the correct gear; an ominous police onesie followed by body armour and that was before the gun holster and machine gun were handed to me. Then followed a briefing on the safe and correct use of firearms delivered by Stirling Airsoft these guys knew how to put someone like me through their paces, I quickly learnt how to draw, how to move whilst firing a weapon and most challengingly, how to change weapons in the heat of a battle. I soon realised it is nothing like the movies; there is so much to think about and there is no way you can use the Americanised posturing you see in video games and movies as the recoil from the weapon at best destroys your aim and at worst can cause injury. Worse still, the body armour slows down your flexibility, the helmet destroys your field of vision. I have to be honest I had real sympathy for anyone who carries a weapon either to serve our country or protect our liberty.

Robo_Reflexes_Experience_Day_019Nonetheless the briefing had me sufficiently amped and ready. The target was set – three times through the course, first time machine gun, second time pistol and third time changing to weapon on instruction. I was off; the subdued lighting and smoke making it hard to see (well, that’s what I’m sticking to anyway). I managed to take down all targets in a respectable 33 seconds. The second time with the pistol I fared better; the smaller hand held weapon feeling more immediate and certain along with my familiarity with the landscape. I punched the air with my fist when he told me it was 15 seconds. The third time however was embarrassing. I had seen Robocop in the movie and witnessed the way he had changed weapons and he makes it look easy, however there is a good argument for why robots are needed in the film and one of them is because they make far less errors. I entered the arena, click, click my machine gun is on ‘safety’. O.k I think, I can make the time up, then after I take down a couple of targets the instructor from Stirling Airsoft shouts “change” meaning to change my weapon, then I not only struggle with getting the pistol out but to my horror realise it is on safety too. My time – 32 seconds only a second slower than when I had one gun. I would have buried my face in my hands – that is, if I wasn’t wearing a helmet.

When I got home I consoled myself by making sure I had pre-ordered a copy of ROBOCOP, which arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on 9th June 2014. I strongly recommend that you do the same or make sure you pick up a copy on the day of release; it is a fine retelling of a classic film and one which tries to builds upon the original’s legacy instead of merely repeating it and features some star turns by Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson. What’s more, the DVD has deleted scenes and a making of featurette. Check it out.

Robocop is available on digital platforms from 2 June 2014, and on DVD and Blu-ray from 9 June 2014, courtesy of Studio Canal.

The dress everyone is talking about: Rihanna at the CFDA awards

There is no hesitation in saying that superstar Rihanna puts the RI in riskay, with her choices in fashion. She knows how to turn heads and be the only name on people lips at any occasion, and the CFDA awards were no different. Little is left to the imagination when the singer attended the awards that celebrate fashion ironically wearing practically nothing! The daring Adam Selman sheer dress that took instagram by surprise is confidently wore by Riri showing off a whole lot of her femininity. The fitted Swarovski crystal covered floor length dress spread across social media as the world is faced with Riri’s nipples drawing all attention, however the singer modestly tries to cover herself up with her fur accessory and not forgetting the sparkling turban to draw attention to her face.

Vogue tweeted “Rihanna doesn’t follow fashion she affects it!!”, There is no argument in honouring her with Style Icon at the event as she leads the way in the fashion industry taking every risk and taboo on the journey! She dares to do the the undareable and it is undeniable that she does it greatly, stiring up a storm whilst doing so!

Her best accessory of the night is her confidence and she has really embraced it to the fullest!

3 Steps (and some) to successfully lose body fat

Hi everyone

I hope you are all doing well and have been enjoying the sun and rain. I see a lot of people are counting down the weeks until summer and are starting to “Workout” to get in shape for summer.

Thats great. I am really glad to see people focusing on addressing any health and fitness issues they have now summer is on its way. And when its all over we can revert back and binge until next year and do it all again, a mad dash of counting down the weeks. Stepping on the scales. Being horrified if we don’t just make it this year or realising we are getting a year older and the quick fixes just aren’t so quick anymore.

OOHHHHH wait wait wait, there is something else we could all do instead.
What is it I hear you scream, tell us now……well its this.

Are you ready?
Here we go……ITS…..

Behave all year round….BOOM shock horror people.

Now Im not saying go crazy fitness fanatic all the time snapping at your friends because they do not follow the new road you are traveling and munching on exactly the same new food you are. Working out everyday for a year. Only eat low calorie (AAAAGGGGGHHHHH) labelled food (you should never eat this crap anyway) and step on the scales every night.

No I am not saying that but what I am saying is so very simple you will kick yourself….or someone else, yes do that, kick someone else.

No what I am saying is with 3 (and some) very simple changes we can make a lot of difference to someone who may be finding it very difficult to do anything at all.

It really is simple and I dare you to try it…..double dare you and see what happens.

OH and again this post and tips are inspired by Strength Coach Dan John danjohn.net

So what do I mean when I say (and some)

Well the 3 steps are not so simple, I mean they are and they are not.
You cant just do the 3 steps and expect great results from them to happen immediately.

The level of commitment differs for everyone, time is ongoing and results may take longer than you wish….but for a true positive lifestyle change I’m sorry but it doesn’t happen just over night.
NO NO NO it does not and anyone who tells you, Lose…..in…. weeks, is in the words of CT Fletcher is a MOTHER F**KING LIAR. FACT.
Thanks CT.

You may not have liked hearing that but its true. So for next years plan of 6 weeks to beach body….please plan a bit further ahead.

Also another huge point of the (And Some) is accountability. This really is the hardest part. Harder than any workout you will do, any foods you will give up and harder than setting the clock earlier by 30 mins to move.

Its the reason so many people are unable to follow on to their goals and instead they quit.

Set backs may happen. Things will seem like they are not going anywhere and people will try to pull you away from the new simple rules you have set but you have to stick with the choice you made.
Otherwise you have no right to complain.

Again as Dan said…..The Goal is to keep the Goal the Goal.
Do not detour. Do not change or add some crazy stuff that has no meaning. Do not follow no crazy which craft (Herbalife ect).
Stick to your guns baby and show me the gun show.

You are accountable for your own results, not me or him or them but you you YOU DAMMIT.

After accountably comes honesty.
Be honest with yourself. Did you do things to the best of your ability? Did you follow the dam instructions? Did you have a sneaky piece of pie or skip that workout?
Be honest with yourself….be honest with me. Please

And another thing is…..keep it simple.
Gimmicks, gadgets, pills and super drinks do not work.
In the age of gladiatorial combatants, to 1970’s bodybuilders to modern day soldiers.
Its all followed the simple rules. Train right eat right move right.

No this or that from the late night shopping channel.
No less this or that and fancy name on food labels.
No upside down intensity training program.

Its as simple as me and thats saying something.

So here we go

Step 1 is simple….Drink 2 Glasses of Water a day.
Thats it. I say again drink 2 glasses of water a day.

You wont believe how many do not or cannot even do this yet will do some other crazy stuff.
Just drink two glasses of water a day….for how long? well here comes the accountability, honestly and time scale.
For as long as you needed or are able to keep the goal the goal.
Yes its simple. see if you can do it before midday, you don’t have too but its something to plan for.
Dam if you need to set an alarm on your phone to go off once or twice saying….DRINK WATER.

Honestly guys if you cannot do this then dam…good luck to you.

Oh and I don’t mean only two glasses…hell drink more but for a hell of a lot of people its enough to just do 2 so that is the first simple goal.

Step 2 is….move more, move better, hell get your ass on the floor.

People our bodies are amazing things and where designed to do amazing things and our minds are amazing things but our minds have made our bodies lazy.
They have fond ways for us to short-cut ourselves.
Remotes, escalators, little scooters with engines on them….dam them all.

Use your body as much as you can. Walk up that small flight of stairs or go up 2 flights in the office before catching the elevator.
Get rid of the remote and get up and turn the TV off/on (off) and sit on the floor more.
Learn to use your amazing body as it should be used, get up and get down. Reach and stretch for things. Roll over and rock back.
The more you can use your body the better you become at moving it the more efficient you will be able to burn fat….boom simple next step.

Step 3 is…….Lets agree
That we should avoid…..or at least cut down (massively) on
Sugar
Cardboard Carbs-made in a factory
Frankenstein fats-made in a factory
Eat your colourful Veggies-and a big mix of green, red, yellow
DRINK TWO GLASSES OF WATER.

Think of it like this….EAT LIKE AN ADULT
If you find this hard then try the Alpo-Dog Food Diet.

Basically invite a load of friends around and explain to them your goal. Tell them if you do not fulfil the goal, you quit, cheat or whatever then you will eat the can of dog food.

And every time you feel like quitting, open the can and have a sniff…..BOOM back on track.

People its that simple to start on the road to fat loss.
You just need to start it and stick to it. Remember you are accountable…..not me.

Green Beret Gives Gwyneth Paltrow Some Stern Words After She Compares Mean Tweets To War

Gwyneth PaltrowGwyneth Paltrow got a lot of criticism for saying that reading mean tweets about herself was like ‘war’, but the best response comes from Green Beret and Purple Heart recipient Bryan Sikes on Clash Daily. Read on and tell us what you think.

This is what Paltrow said: “You come across (online comments) about yourself and about your friends, and it’s a very dehumanizing thing, It’s almost like how, in war, you go through this bloody, dehumanizing thing … My hope is, as we get out of it, we’ll reach the next level of conscience.”

To Miss Paltrow,

I’d first like to start out by saying how terrible I feel for you and all your friends that on a daily basis have to endure mean words written by people you don’t know. I can only imagine the difficulty of waking up in a 12,000 square foot Hollywood home and having your assistant retrieve your iPhone, only to see that the battery is low and someone on twitter (the social media concept that you and all of your friends contribute to on an hourly basis to feed your ego and narcissistic ways), has written a mean word or 2 about you. You’ve hit the nail on the head, war is exactly like that. You should receive a medal for the burden you have carried on your shoulders due to these meanies on social media.

You said, “Its almost like, how in war, you go through this bloody dehumanizing thing and then something is defined out of it.” I could see how you, and others like you in “the biz”, could be so insecure and mentally weak that you could pair the difficulty of your life on twitter to my brothers who have had their limbs ripped off and seen their friends shot, blown up, burned and disfigured, or wake up every morning in pain – while just starting the day is a challenge. How about our wives? The ones that sign on to be there for us through thick and thin, that help us to shake the hardships of war upon our return? And do all this while being mothers to our kids, keeping bills in order because we are always gone, and keeping our lives glued together. They do all this, by the way, without a team of accountants, nanny’s, personal assistants, and life coaches. Yeah, reading a mean tweet is just like all that.

You know what is really “dehumanizing”, Miss Paltrow? The fact that you’d even consider that your life as an “A-list” celebrity reading internet comments could even compare to war and what is endured on the battlefield. You and the other “A-listers” that think like you are laughable. You all have actually convinced yourselves that you in some way face difficulty on a regular basis. Let me be the first to burst your bubble: a long line at Starbucks, your driver being 3 minutes late, a scuff mark on your $1200 shoes and a mean tweet do not constitute difficulty in the eyes of a soldier.

Understand me when I say this: war does not define me. It is a chapter in my life that helped shaped me. Being a husband and father is what defines me. Remember, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never…be close to what war is.

Cindy McCain, wife of decorated war veteran, Senator John McCain also tweeted:

Charlize Theron Admits To Lying On Her CV

Actors are known for being a little bit economical when it comes to the truth on their CV. We can all ride horses and snowboard, oh, and speak French. It turns out that not even famous actors are immune. Even Charlize Theron has admitted she has told the odd lie on her CV.

charlize theron oscars 2013

Charlize says she didn’t lie about being able to ride a horse (and I am proud to say I can too). Which is just as well as she had to ride in new comedy western A Million Ways To Die In The West.

You can hear Theron’s interview with the BBC’s Genevieve Hassan here.

Lily Allen Shares Her Love of Spanx

We all need a little bit of help sometimes and Lily Allen is no exception. Lily Allen shared her love for Spanx with the world by posting a video on Instagram of her dancing in her dressing room in a pair of Spanx. Later that evening she stunned the crowd in Brussels in a metallic cut out dress, proving that Spanx is the not-so-secret wardrobe essential for women.

Beer Butt Chicken

This has to be the best and the only way to cook incredible delicious melt in the mouth chicken. Smothered in whatever your heart desires, be it BBQ with a fiery kick or a more delicate rosemary and lemon tang. Beer Butt chicken is a novel way of cooking a bird, but once you have done it you will wonder how you will ever cook chicken any other way in the future. Shoving the beer can up the chickens bottom is somewhat hilarious and a little unglamorous but who cares when it tastes like a Roman feast at the end!

Beer Butt Chicken Beer Butt Chicken P1140874

Beer Butt Chicken

All you need to do is grab a ton of ingredients and marinate the bird about 12 hours before cooking. We chose to use 4 large scoops of brown sugar, a good glug of soya sauce, an ample helping of BBQ sauce, a few chillies chopped up for a real kick and about a tablespoon of smoked paprika. Mix it all up and smother it all over the chicken. Make sure you cut the elastic holing the legs together. Place it in the fridge until you are ready to cook. Then when you are ready just pop it onto a can of dark beer or ale. Empty out about a 1/3 of the can or drink it before hand so their is space for it to let off steam! It takes a bit of patience and its a 2 person job if you get the giggles! Make sure its sturdy and but that beast in the oven and cook as usual.

P1140846Rustle up some balsamic potato wedges and a green salad and you are in for a delicious feast.
The juices of the bird make a perfect rich gravy by just adding some flour to thicken over the hob, in the try the bird was cooked in, then thin out the mixture by adding a pint of water and simmer until you are happy with the thickness.

A truly fantastic memorable meal thats so simple to create, tons of fun and will leave your guests laughing for weeks on end! P1140907

Bounce Ping Pong And Cocktail Club | Restaurant Review

It is hard to create something unique and different in London, but it is fair to say that Bounce – Europe’s largest social ping pong and cocktail club based in Holborn, achieves this. In fact, it has everything you could need: cocktails, good food and ping pong.

The venue was designed by lauded interior designer Russell Sage and is visually stunning. It boasts an impressive 95 cover restaurant and cocktail bar and 17 bespoke designed ping-pong tables available for play – one being the Olympic final table. All of this can be enjoyed surrounded by London’s most impressive UV installation rolled out throughout the entire club.

Here is how we got on.

Paloma, Marcin, James and I arrive and head to the restaurant area. The menu has a great selection and it takes us a while to decide what we want. We order our starters and a cocktail each.

Paloma has the H Forman’s Scottish smoked salmon, roasted beetroots & horseradish cream which she says is earthy and smoked. The horseradish was a perfect accompaniment, didn’t have too much of a sting. Marcin has the Bruschetta 3 ways (Parma ham & pesto, Datterini tomatoes, peas, broad beans & pecorino): he says it is fresh and the pea complimented the mint well. James had the Gamberoni – baked king prawns, smoked garlic, chilli, Sicilian lemon butter, rocket & parsley: he says the prawns were huge and juicy and the sauce was amazing. For my starter I had Buffalo Mozzarella, Pixel tomatoes, Sorrento olives, toasted pine nuts, wild rocket & lemon infused olive oil. It was amazing. The ingredients are high quality and the combination really works well together.

For mains Marcin had the Baked salmon, heritage beets, broad beans and horseradish cream which he said was excellent: tender on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. Paloma had the Spiced Newlyn Bay crab macaroni cheese. She said it was slightly a let down and overshadowed by chilli. James had a Spicy pork & fennel, plum tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, basil & fresh chilli pizza which was excellent. James thought it was perfectly spicy. I had the Pan fried Label Anglaise free range chicken breast with smoked pancetta, roast squash, Italian beans in a rich tomato ragu: this dish was amazing. The best one I think. It was comfort food but even better. The sauce was amazing and the chicken was perfectly done.

For my dessert I had the Rum & raisin panna cotta with winter berry compote. It was amazing, with real raisins in. A very unique and tasty dessert. Paloma had the Warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, which she said was possibly the best she had ever had. James had the Spiced plum & amaretto tart with Devonshire clotted cream which he says was superb. Marcin had an expresso which he said was good and we also had some really good English Breakfast tea. The service was also amazing. Everyone is really friendly.

We made a fair dent in the cocktail menu. We had The Tipping Point, which tasted fruity and dangerous. It was far too drinkable for something which had every alcohol under the sun in it including absinthe. Bounce only allow two per person, the clue is in the name but Marcin handled it well, a Hatton Garden Spritz which was delicious and summery, a Wiff Waff which was also amazing and different, The Pink One which was yummy, a Ladies Delight No 2, which, indeed, was a delight, a Ping Pong Show which was brilliant, a Daddy Mac, which says it is not for girls but we’ll show them, it was very tasty and strong. Lastly we had a Gin Lane Spritz which was superb. Phew! All of the cocktails were fruity and easy to drink.

Paloma and Marcin play ping pong.

Paloma and Marcin play ping pong.

After all of that alcohol came the ping pong. I was terrible which I won’t blame on the alcohol but just on my general ineptness. I did get a little better towards the end. Annoyingly the boys did very well. Although Paloma held the girl’s side up. The ping pong is lots of fun and comes in thirty-minute slots. Bounce is the home of Ping Pong and you definitely get an amazing vibe from the place. Paloma text me the day before I wrote this review saying Bounce was on Made in Chelsea, so it has reached the peak of trendiness and is showing no signs of letting up. The day before we were going to go, my fiance and I were at his best man and girlfriend’s house and they were also going to Bounce. It is thee place to be seen at the moment.

Bounce has amazing food, brilliant cocktails and excellent ping pong. I cannot praise it enough, we really had a wonderful time. A hen party even come to our ping pong table after we had finished, so Bounce is perfect for many different occasions. We will be going back, numerous times.
