How to Explain American Football to a Foreigner?

For some reason, foreigners seem to have a hard time understanding American football. This might have something to do with the fact that they have another name for soccer — football — and they play an odd version of the sport called rugby. Whatever the reason for the confusion, here is a simple explanation of American Football for all to understand:

What’s the Purpose of it All?

How to Explain American Football to a Foreigner

How to Explain American Football to a Foreigner

Image Via Flickr by alschim

Foreigners often think of football as an unorganized, yet complicated mess of a game where there is more starting and stopping and player swapping than they care to understand. That’s because they’re relating it to other team sports, such as soccer. The best way to get a handle on American football is to take everything you know about sports and throw it out of the window. Imagine you’re from Mars and you’ve come to earth because you have Tampa Bay Buccaneers tickets but you don’t know a thing about the sport. A weird concept, but let’s roll with it.

The aim of the game is to get the ball into the opponent’s ‘end zone’. This can be done by running it in there or passing it to a player in the zone. There are 11 players on each team and the game is split into 15 minute quarters with a sudden death 15 minute period if the scores are tied at the end. Each team is allowed three time outs per half.

How the Heck Does the Points System Work?

A touchdown is awarded when a team crosses into the end zone with the ball or it’s thrown or collected by a player in that zone. It’s worth six points.

A field goal is scored when a player kicks the ball through the goal posts. This is usually attempted after the third down and is worth three points.

An extra point can be earned by kicking a field goal after a touchdown has been scored, similar to a conversion in rugby. Two points can be gained if the team can successfully take the ball into the end zone instead.

Safety is when a defensive team is able to tackle an offensive player in their own end zone. It’s worth two points.

What’s All This Business With Attack and Defense Teams?

Why have one set of players when you can have two or three? You may feel slightly confused when the game is halted and then an entirely different set of men run out on the field, but it’s completely normal. There is a separate set of players for offensive and defensive plays. There are only 11 players on the field at one time from each team, but a squad is made up of 45 players of all shapes and sizes that have special roles during the game. Attackers are there to get the ball downfield and score points, while the defense is there to stop the opposition from doing just that.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

The most important thing to know, other that what you’ve already learned, is that an attacking team has 4 attempts to move 10 yards further down the field. If they are unable to do so, the other team gets possession of the ball. This is the reason that most people get confused when watching. If the attackers are unable to progress 10 yards with the ball in their hand, they lose the play, which is why a kick is often resorted to after the third down.

Now that you understand the basic rules of American Football, there’s no excuse for sitting in the stands and making silly comments!

4.        Allow to set in the fridge for 6-8 hours.

6.       Allow to cool in the fridge for 10 mins.

7.       Serve when requires.

Alternatively serve as a frozen sweet.

 STRAWBERRY JEWEL

What are the ‘red sprinkles’ made of (this is probably covered in the video or a stupid question)? They are the type of sprinkles you would put on ice cream

Any comment on type of cream? It would be double cream

Is “50ml” ‘one’ serving as jt were? Yes

STRAWBERRY KISS

Is there a particular technique or skill to the ‘garnishing’? You could wet the rim with Tequila Rose then dip the glass into the sprinkles

I have put the step in as garnish before pouring – did you film this one?  Is this how you did it?

Is “50ml” ‘one’ serving as jt were? Yes

STRAWBERRY SPLIT

In what order should they be layered?  This is important to the steps – and again they would need to match the video? The order to match the image

Is “50ml” ‘one’ serving as jt were? Yes

TR YOGURT DESSERT

What is the garnish in the picture?  Will add this as a recommended 6th step for completeness… Lime zest

Why do our sugary cravings always strike at 4pm?

clip_image002It’s 4pm, you’ve got an inbox that’s bursting at the seams, a to-do list longer than your morning commute, but all you want to do is devour an entire packet of biscuits in an effort to stay awake.

Overwhelming food cravings are the culprit behind most broken diets. But why does this sweet treat urge always seem to hit us at around 4pm? And what can we do to curb these calorific cravings? We enlist the help of independent nutritional expert and dietician Naomi Beinart to help explain this 4pm food phenomenon and offer us some healthy snack solutions.

When we are tired, we tend to make poorer food choices, wanting a quick sweet fix to perk us up. This can occur most often in the afternoon when cortisol levels can take a natural dip (cortisol is a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands that fluctuates throughout the day) and when this dip occurs, we may feel more tired as cortisol normally gives us a feeling of energy.

Sweet Fix

Naomi explains ‘When you’re in your 20’s, it’s very easy to snack on sweet things without putting on weight, and still having enough energy to get through the day and go out all night. Fast forward to your 30’s and 40’s and sweet snacking can cause a host of problems from premature ageing, a decrease in energy levels, hormonal imbalances and mood problems.’’

Thankfully all of these health concerns can be helped by eating the right foods at the right time, ‘eating well will help balance out blood sugar, reduce sweet cravings, increase energy levels and help make skin look better,’ says Naomi.

Blood sugar rollercoaster

Fluctuating glucose levels can be harmful for our health. The rollercoaster of glycemic highs and lows is not good for our general health. If over time, you become insulin resistant, where more and more insulin is being produced by the pancreas, but the insulin receptors in your cells do not respond effectively to it, then this can increase your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Want to get off the ride?

Try taking a natural nutritional supplement that can help to balance out your blood sugar levels. Diabain has 2 such products that do just that. Diabain’s Inusol is a herbal remedy made from a scientific blend of 8 natural nutrients and minerals that can help to control blood sugar levels and is free from any harmful chemicals. Similarly Diabain’s Vittol is a multi-vitamin and mineral formula with a blend of 26 essential elements, ensuring you have the fundamental nutrirnets to help keep you healthy. Vittol has been scientifically formulated to help lower blood sugar levels & glycemic response in both type-2 diabetics and those diagnosed as having a pre-diabetic condition. Inusol and Vittol are £9.99 from www.diabain.com.

Naomi’s diet Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t be restricted by your circumstances. Travel, eating out and dieting can all restrict our food choices. Overcome these by always having a healthy snack with you, such as a banana, almonds or oatcakes with guacamole or hummus.

Supplements can be helpful in controlling sugar cravings and energy dips. Choose one with key blood sugar regulating properties such as Fenugreek extract, Cinnamon bark and Gymnema Sylvestre extract.

Avoid sushi, as the white rice can be bad news for your blood sugar levels, instead go for sashimi or grilled chicken and vegetables.

Eat every 3 hours. When you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises in response to the food. The higher and quicker it rises, the more

insulin has to be produced by your pancreas. The higher your blood sugar goes up, the lower it crashes down afterwards. This crash will also occur if you leave longer than three hours between eating. At the drop, your body will send you off for a quick fix, like a bar of chocolate or a cup of tea and biscuit, because it need to lift the blood sugar up again.

Withnail And I Gallery Review

withnail-and-i-stillThe free booze was flowing generously and the sounds of Jimi Hendrix were pounding as Withnail and I returned to their old stomping ground in Camden Town, basking in the glorious summer heat. June sees the start of an exhibition at the Proud Camden Kitchen of a remarkable set of candid, behind the scene stills taken during production of the cult British classic, taken by the renowned film set photographer Murray Close.

Murray Close is considered the go to man for film production photography in a career that has spanned over three decades. He got his big break at the age of nineteen, working for the great Stanley Kubrick (himself a photographer in his youth) on the set of horror adaptation The Shining. The publicity still  of Jack Nicholson’s face peering with menace through a freshly axed door has become synonymous with not just that film, but for Nicholson’s bad boy persona and has become an icon of horror cinema. Close has worked for some of the biggest names in the business such as Spielberg and Eastwood, and on some of their best known works. Tucked away in his extensive C.V. is the low-budget 1986 comic drama Withnail and I, written and directed by Bruce Robinson. It’s a semi-autobiographical tale of two out of work actors (Richard E.Grant and Paul McGann) in 1960’s London, who tired of waiting for the phone to ring and drowning themselves in a sea of liquor and lighter fluid, decide to go ‘on holiday by mistake’ to the remote rural setting of Penrith in Cumbria. Their situation improves little. It’s a terrifically British comedy and by that I mean that as hilarious as it gets, every scene is undercut with an overwhelming melancholy. It is every bit as achingly sad as it is funny. Over the years it has become the definition of the word ‘cult’ creating an entire legion of fans across the years, not least amongst countless students who attempt to match drink for drink what the characters consume in the film.

Close’s portraits of the film’s production are a joyful and revealing spectacle. They range from the cosy intimacy of the London based segments  (the warmth of Uncle Monty’s flat radiates from images) to the roaming, overwhelming countryside locale that seems to swallow cast and crew whole. The collection captures the comradery of the cast and crew, and also fits in with the almost anarchic tone of the films story. Grant seems to take centre stage in many of the portraits. The character of Withnail can’t help but infiltrate each shot he is in and that unique blend of charisma and chaos permeates from his pictures, as intoxicating as anything he consumes in the film. As he does in the film, McGann remains a calm centre in the midst of his colleagues tomfoolery. His handsome features would not look out of place in a fashion shoot and they create a nice contrast with the displays of comic caricature. Look out to for an appearance from Ringo Starr; fellow Beatle George Harrison was one of the driving forces behind the films production.

The title of Withnail and I: The Finale is given a deeper, bittersweet meaning by the sad passing earlier this year of Richard Griffiths. The established character actor had many hits to his name (Pie In The Sky and Harry Potter were standouts) but none more memorable than that of Uncle Monty; Withnail’s eccentric uncle, fellow would be thespian with a passion for cooking and lust for ‘I’. His gentle yet unmissable presence was another key factor to the films success and its staying power over the years. This gallery serves up a fitting tribute to not just a great character but, by all accounts, a genuinely lovable human being.

Withnail and I: The Finale is running from June 21st to September 1st at Proud Camden, Stables Market in Chalk Farm Road

Frankie and Benny’s 2 Courses For £10.95 Review

photo1

We went to Frankie and Benny’s in the Rotunda in Kingston last Wednesday after we saw the excellent new Star Trek film  review here. Frankie and Benny’s is a fun, affordable Italian American style restaurant. it has an excellent atmosphere. The decor is good and I like the old black and white photographs of Frankie and Benny up on the walls. We sit in a stylish booth with a comfy banquette on each side. The service staff were friendly and attentive.  We take advantage of the two course for £10.95 deal available all day on every day except Saturday.

To start with we have a blue cheese mushroom crostini. Button mushrooms tossed in a rich blue cream sauce and served over toasted ciabatta. Rich and creamy.

photo5

We also have the crab bruschetta. Tomato, red onion, crab, basil and pepper again over toasted ciabatta. You can’t go wrong with a good Bruschetta.

photo3

For our mains we have the Philly cheese steak sandwich. Steak sautéed with red pepper, red onion and sliced mushrooms. Piled high in a toasted ciabatta bun with philly cheese sauce. As you can see it was pretty decadent. Frankie and Benny’s always gives you excellent portion sizes.

We also try the veggie Gnocchi bake. Gnocchi tossed tomato sauce, red onion and green chilli, topped with mozzarella cheese. Very tasty and lots of chilli.

photo4

At two courses for £10.95 you can argue about the price. A great place to feed the whole family.
