New network launches to support young people inspired by recent sporting success

sport for young peopleThe Performance Sports Network launched online this week to help aspiring and dedicated individuals aiming to become professional sportsmen and sportswomen. Anyone can make a difference by supporting young athletes and can go a step further by offering sponsorship, opportunities and special deals through the network.

Young people are encouraged to request whatever support they need for any sporting goal they are trying to achieve. That might be for equipment, training space, mentoring, coaching advice or sponsorship and they can easily post a video to show their talents. Once a request is made others can respond by making an offer directly to the individual.

“As soon as a request is created they can begin receiving support and proposals from peers, coaches, experts, organisations and sponsors,” explained network founder Chris Davis.

“As a football coach I see lots of kids who hope to make it as a professional. I know their chances are very small but I don’t believe this means they shouldn’t try. I believe that if anyone wants it enough they should have the best possible chance, regardless of their background. This network can provide everyone with access to experts, resources, opportunities and mentors to help and support them.

“We see how important Andy Murray’s backroom support is to him. Everyone from his coach Ivan Lendl to his mum and everyone in between has helped him succeed. We all need that sort of support – young children right through to college and university athletes,” Chris said.

“Very few of us may make it to Wimbledon or Wembley but there are lots of other opportunities in sport that dedicated training and learning open. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. There’s an inspiring saying I like that goes something like ‘Aim for the moon and even if you miss you’ll end among the stars.’ This is true for people wanting to get involved in professional sports. ”

As well as acting as a portal for any individuals to find help, the network has regular opportunities for training and experiences open to members. “This is a performance sports network but there is nothing exclusive about it. We want to provide everyone with equal access to quality sporting help and opportunities, regardless of background, educational level or location.”

Why did Chris start the network? “Like most kids when I was a young I wanted to be a sports star. I played most sports and at times when I was doing really well I thought it might be possible to make it as a professional,” he confessed. “But it’s hard when you are growing and moving up through the age groups. I was a good bowler and played cricket for the county, but one year I grew a few inches and suddenly my run up had to change and my bowling really dropped off. That type of set back can be enough to put an end to those dreams if the right support system is not in place.”

The performance sports network offers unique services and support tools for members “We are always looking for partnerships to offer the best possible opportunities to members. We are currently initiating a scheme to give people feedback on their own sporting videos. Video analysis can be really powerful and a great training aid, but not everyone has access to it. We invite people to share their videos and we can put them in touch with people who can give them constructive feedback and support. We hope to develop this into our own Sports App,” says Chris.

Sports coaches, personal trainers, suppliers or performance experts can offer their own expertise, products, services and expertise to help dedicated individuals. “Maintaining a career in sport often leads to coaching and related careers such as fitness or nutrition. We give people involved in sport many ways to promote themselves, their products, services, skills, courses and expertise. We want to encourage more people to give something back and share their own experiences with the next generation,” said Chris.

You Are Cordially Invited To Shoot Grouse

Is it one of the most sought-after invitations in the shooting calendar? The crème de la crème of shotgun shooting? Yes, it probably is – whether on the Glorious Twelfth itself or later in the season.

Is it the moorlands in August? The never-ending variety of shots to be made for a successful day? The challenge and the exhilaration of a left and right grouse? It is all of these and more.

Shooting grouse is different on many levels.

Altitude for one. You may well be around 1500 feet above sea level on a remote moor, a world away from the everyday concrete, tarmac and glass that surrounds so much of our lives. The red grouse, delightfully named Lagopus lagopus scoticus, unique to the British Isles, favours a habitat 1000 to 2000 feet up on moors that can be a challenge for a shooting party to reach en masse.

Driven grouse was believed to have been started in Yorkshire back in the early 19th century and records show that up on Blubberhouse Moor, between Skipton and Harrogate, a bag of 1070 was shot single-handed by Lord Walsingham on 30 August 1888. He later went on to file bankruptcy as his shooting expenditure and hospitality exceeded his income by an ever-increasing margin. In today’s economic climate, that bag would have cost the Lord around £80,000.

Good heather equals good grouse shooting. It’s a fact. From the Pennines to eastern Scotland and the uplands of eastern Ireland, the plant Calluna vulgaris forms the rich soil territories enjoyed by the cock birds to protect and raise their wild families. The territories can be small and increase the grouse population when the heather is good. Burning helps and there is original research that found that correct heather burning was 80% of moor management in providing regeneration of the heather and ‘grouse houses’. Nowadays, we also need to concentrate on vermin control, grit supply, appropriate drainage and good shooting.

Good grouse shooting starts with preparation. The 4×4 vehicles will get you most of the way to a butt, yet the chances are you will need to stride across the heather to your allotted stand without seeing where your foot falls and having to raise your knees high on each stride. Down the hill, it was warm and balmy. Up on the top, it’s breezy and fresh so ensure your clothing is layered and able to cope with a variety of conditions.

Keep the colour of your outfits toned to the terrain. Grouse have pretty good eyesight and you do not want to send them off away from your position.

On colour, let your eyes adjust to the light and the rich deep subtle tones of the moorland. An attraction of this type of shooting is the location and the marvellous scenery. And with that attraction begins the complications and challenges associated with shooting grouse. Range judging for one. Shooting pheasant and partridge from a well-devised peg location usually brings with it an easy identifiable marker point, be it a tree or a hedgerow.

Up on the moors, there is not that type of luxury. When you are at your butt and ensuring you have the time before shooting starts (the beaters could be a mile or two away) pace out 25 and 40 yards from your butt and establish some visual markers of your own at ground level like a distinguishable clump of heather or an outcrop, visible bedrock.

Getting your bearings is paramount, the beaters line, and the location of your fellow guns. Moorland butts can be positioned where you can be significantly below or very high above the adjacent butt.

Safety in a grouse butt cannot be emphasised strongly enough. A line of butts can curve and not be in a straight line. There is often the opportunity to shoot ‘going away’ after a turn through the line. This turn must be performed with the stock out of the shoulder and the muzzles facing skyward. Be cognisant of any pickers up behind the line and if you have a loader, practice your positioning before the drive sends up the birds. Load with the gun sideways down to avoid closing the gun inside the butt.

Many grouse shooters I have coached, although experienced, still use light weight bamboo hinged poles on either side of the butt to control their arc of fire. The small hinges allow the poles to be broken down and inserted into an old barrel sleeve and be carried in a gun slip without any inconvenience. They also ensure that the turn for a ‘going away’ behind is always correctly executed.

Your eyes are adjusted to the light, your spatial awareness and depth perception is fine tuned (you know if a bird’s trajectory is going over THAT rock, it’s 40 yards and in range seconds later.)

Fractions of a second later actually, as our tough indigenous red grouse can travel at up to 85 mph with a following wind and having survived disease, numerous predators and rather inclement weather conditions, they are wholly prepared to zip past you to avoid getting shot and rushed off to a kitchen either at your home or a fine restaurant.

Grouse can follow the contours of a moor at great speed in the style of a tactical fighter jet. They will be low and could surprise you. The covey can take different directions all at once. Some break off left, some straight, but you are ready, muzzles forward, eyes focussed (over your barrels). Now pick your bird, just one. The adrenalin surges, but you concentrate on that one grouse. You will employ a smooth yet rapid mount, one piece movement to ‘in front’, fire, only then look for another bird. Many misses are caused by looking at one bird, but shooting at another. Compartmentalise. Visually divide up the covey and your shots will bring better results.

Because of the open nature of the terrain, the wind effect is more than in a valley looking up for pheasants. You will need to swing fast on birds flying downwind and it is easier to achieve than on an upwind target.

There is propensity to slow your swing on a upwind bird that appears to be moving a lot slower in the air, but you still have to get in front. Shooting the slower bird requires more conscious effort than a faster instinctive shot to a supersonic crosser.

Do not spoil your day by mounting the gun too early and ruminating on misses. As before, pick out your bird, eye over your barrels, move, and weight forward, be square to your kill, mount, and shoot in front.

If the bird is on the end of the barrels too long, the chances are you will not get ahead of it as you will track the target without the impetus to swing through and create the desired forward allowance.

And if you miss one, get it right on the next bird. Don’t ponder where you went wrong, get reloaded and carry on. Shooting grouse is a combination of fluidity and speed and trust in your own ability, hence it is neither for the faint-hearted nor for the overly analytical shooters.

Like a golfer playing down the last fairways of a major tournament, trusting his swing is paramount to success, so must a grouse shooter let his subconscious do the work as no amount of conscious calculation can assimilate the changes in pace of flight and direction that a grouse can achieve.

That is what driven grouse is about. The excitement, the adrenalin rush and the sheer sense of achievement as the first left and right goes down in the heather.

Walking-up grouse is much less expensive, yet has its merits. Six or eight guns and dogs can walk a line through the heather flushing going away and quartering targets. For some shooters, when the grouse are scarce, it can be deemed uneventful and when grouse are abundant, the line stops too often for picking up. However, just a few guns and some good al-purpose dogs is a marvellous way to roam the moors on a clear summers’ day.

I mention ‘all-purpose dogs’ to differentiate the more artistic shooting of grouse ‘over dogs’. A good pair of pointers or setters will hunt at speed covering the heather and when one scents a bird, it will stop on point in the direction of the birds.

The second dog, not having the scent, will ‘back’ the first dog, pointing to its tail, to ensure the guns can see the line and take a up position. The forward dog moves slowly toward the quarry and as soon as the bird rises, it will drop flat in the heather as the shot is taken.

I have seen this in the field with two Hungarian Vizslas, a truly remarkable operation. Of course, this style of shooting occurs with partridge and other quarry and the significant difference with Walking-up is the variety of shots that can be taken, crossing, sometimes even an overhead as the guns can position themselves according to the information the pointing dog is providing.

Majestic sport indeed –  la crème de la crème of shooting for many of those who receive that gilt-edged invitation.

Lyn Burgess interview. How to be your best self.

I came across Lyn Burgess and her coaching a few years ago through Creative Edge Audio. I was very happy when she said yes to being interviewed for Frost. I find Lyn incredibly inspirational. I hope you do as well.

1) How did you get into personal and business coaching?

I worked for many years in operational roles in the financial services sector and was made redundant from an H R Director’s job. I had outplacement consulting and looked at my skills and my values and out of that came ‘coaching’. I think I always had a coaching philosophy though when I was managing teams of people, I always found I could get them to do what was needed without yielding a big stick – and they’d be quite happy to do it as well. Setting up my own coaching business in 2002 seemed like such an obvious progression, I’m not sure why I hadn’t done it before!

2) Best tip for confidence?

“Fake it till you make it!” It’s good to model someone else who is a confident person – give yourself a ‘confident outfit’ or a lucky pair of knickers. Start off by just ‘pretending’ to be confident for 30 mins each day and experience how it feels. Make sure you have some interaction with other people and see how differently they react to you. Also, create a visualisation of you being/feeling confident. Practice this every day. Also think back to a time when you felt confident so you remember that you can do it and notice what happens in your body. Start little and often and your mind will become the confident person you want to be

3) What do you love about your job?

Pretty much all of it. You won’t ever meet a coach that doesn’t enjoy what they do – they always want to do more, help more people. I love marketing my business, I love networking, I love finding new places to advertise, I love working out how to reach more people, how else I can coach them. I love other people’s success and knowing that because I helped them set some goals and asked them a bunch of questions it really made a difference to their lives and their career. I also love doing presentation and workshops to groups of people. You get some great energy back and participants always learn from other people.

4) Advice for actors?

Be tenacious, get clearly focused on exactly what you want ie. a part in a period drama at the Globe starting in October 2010 paying me £X, rather than “I want a job”. The latter kind of statement is useless, if that’s your idea of a goal then go work in Tesco – there, you have a job. Never give up and be proactive. Just because you have an agent, doesn’t mean you can sit at home and wait for the phone to ring. You can switch on the TV and see that being an actor is not necessarily about being talented. You need to be in the right place at the right time, knowing the right people and not having any hang-ups, or moaning about the industry and telling yourself how tough it is. Network your butt off. It’s much easier to make connections face to face, rather than sitting in a pile of CV’s. Make it easy for casting directors and agents – put yourself in a box to start off with. Once you get well known, then you can diversify, but if you look like a thug and sound like a thug, play thugs.

5) Who is your inspiration?

3 people. One: An old boss of time who saw potential in me and would always say “Lyn, I want you to go and do such and such a job now” and I’d think, ‘I’m not sure I can do that’ – then I went and found that I could do it. Every two years he gave me a different job role to do and it just made me realise that you can do things that you are unsure about. He believed in me and that enabled me to believe in myself. Two: Fiona Harrold – A UK life coach. When I first started my accreditation to become a coach I read her book “Be your own life coach” and I felt so inspired and knew I was on the right path. Three: Tony Robbins – a US life coach. He does the fire walk which I have done – which is actually really easy to do. Check him out on YouTube or read his books, he’s awesome.

6) What’s next?

I feel like this question should be at the end. One of the things that I’ve always wanted to do is to work more with people on a project and within a team of people ie. on a TV programme or on a film. So work with the writers, the producers, the directors and the actors and be part of the production team for whoever needs me. Help with issues of time management, working to budgets, stress management, team dynamics etc. I want people to say in years to come “God, we never make a film/tv programme without a life coach!” It always helps to have someone disassociated from the project to look at it in an impartial way to give those in it another perspective. I also have an idea for a book called “Life, Camera, Action” which uses well known Film quotes to illustrate coaching themes – but I need a writer to write it – then I can develop it into a workshop to take around cinemas in the UK.

7) Tell me about your workshops?

The workshops I run on a monthly basis and they cover 3 main themes. They were born out of doing some advertising when I first started out on Shooting People where I wanted to get into the minds of people in the industry and offered some free coaching in return for completion of a short questionnaire. I had about 90 responses and realised that was a lot of free coaching! So I set up the workshops so that I could coach a whole bunch of people at the same time, rather than one to one. The workshop topics are : Focus, we work around goal setting, looking at what holds you back and create an action plan. Self Belief – on this one we look at limiting beliefs from your past, blast them out of the way and look at confidence building. Networking: where to go, what to say, how to follow up etc etc.

8 ) What is your background?

Financial Services – and by that I mean processing mortgages and secured loans. I also worked in 2 Building Societies. I started as a secretary and then held Managerial roles for years. I have done acting and theatre directing, so I know what it’s like to stand on a stage – which I loved. I always found that I could relate to most people (even if I didn’t like them) so it was always a career that involved interacting with others. Financial services was great because it was fast moving and you had to constantly change and be flexible and I think life is like that too. Every few years you have to reinvent yourself because the landscape keeps changing. I love that, I love taking risks. Too many people try to be a perfectionist and there’s no such thing as perfection, you are striving for something you will never attain. Do something, get a result, tweak it and then do it again!

9) What does your average day consist of?

Variety! Coaching clients which can be via email or telephone. I don’t do much face to face work apart from the workshops. Marketing, twittering, advertising and promoting. Pulling together some ideas for joint workshops. Following up on contacts that I’ve met networking, or recently at Cannes. I never seem to have time to blog frequently enough. But I do promote an 8 Week Makeover Programme that is a very cost effective way of coaching. I also run the events committee for Women in Film and TV, so that usually forms part of my day, checking in with the event producers or organising an event of my own. I email the WFTV office several times a day.

10) What is the hardest part of the job?

Wanting to do everything right now and being impatient. Want to help more people, answer emails, twitter, write newsletters, do my accounts. The hardest part when you first start out is getting to know the difference between empathy and sympathy with a client. I’m good at it now and have developed quite a good sense of emotional detachment. Coaching is always forward focused so it’s my job to keep people ‘in action’ – the hardest part for me is understanding that people move at their own pace – not mine. I sometimes come away from a call thinking “was I any use there? That person is not doing enough” and then two hours later I’ll get a text or an email from the client saying “thanks so much for the sessions, they are always really useful!” So it’s all about perception, and as one of my Magic Quips said: “it might look like I’m doing nothing, but at a cellular level I’m really quite busy”
