Total Recall Film Review

Remake? Reboot? Re-Imagining? Whatever the adjective, this Colin Farrell lead ‘re-doing’ of a Philip K. Dick short story (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, first published in 1966) has been done before in 1990 with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead and Paul Verhoeven lensing. That film acclaimed cult status. And for good reason.

 

In this Len Wiseman (Die Hard 4.0, Underworld) outing Colin Farrell plays the lead character Douglas Quaid who discovers he may or may not be something other than an ordinary, working class Joe in a late 21st century, post chemical-warfare world of multi-stacked urban levels, Minority-Report-esque (also a Dick adaptation) mag-cars and plush, ‘United Federation of Britain’ megalopolises. No expense spared on the visuals, that’s for sure.

 

However. Yes, there was bound to be a however, and for this reviewer it was a big one. The story of Total Recall, We Can Remember It For You….whatever version you are ingesting into your brain-box from whichever medium, benefits from the unknown. The trump card is that you never quite know what is real and what isn’t. At its core the story is about the nature of self. What makes us, us. Our memories? Well what if our memories can be cooked up in a lab, or on a computer with software (or, as the Matrix (1999) showed us, with hard wiring into the brain in a sticky amniotic sack filled with pink lube – more on The Matrix later). Would falsified memories make us still us, or would we be someone else? Unfortunately, if you have seen Paul Verhoeven’s film, you may well know most of these answers already. And that is a real shame. Every ounce of suspense, every scene that hinges on the is-he, isn’t-he dynamic, is redundant. We’ve been here before, and quite frankly the gritty charm of Verhoeven’s outing was far more seductive for this reviewer. Everything seems way too familiar…only, not. I heard tell during hype-time that this outing was ‘closer to the source material’. Not a remake, but another go at the short story. Where I heard that I cannot say and whether it was from ‘official’ sources I do not know. Fact is, it isn’t. It’s Arnie’s story all over again with some superficial and aesthetic changes to give the impression (to the impressionable) that this is something new and shiny. There’s no Mars. No mutants. And if I’m painfully honest, no heart. Even the bits that weren’t in the 1990 film were obvious in their outcome from the get-go.

 

What Arnie lacks in acting ability he makes up for in brawn, screen presence and raw charisma. Farrell might not have the brawn (though an action man he can still be) but he has the acting chops. Unfortunately he left them at home for this one. The phrase ‘a phoned-in performance’ doesn’t quite cut it. I think he emailed this one direct to Wiseman. Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale give it their all. This reviewer got the distinct impression that whilst they were doing their best in a BIG, big-screen performance, Farrell – who let’s be honest is an established, A-List actor at the top of his game – didn’t have much investment in the character and was probably paid a bottomless pit of cold, hard cash for the role.

 

The familiarity with this film didn’t stop at the story either. There were scenes which far too closely resembled Blade Runner, Minority Report (both possibly forgiven as the source material for both was also Philip K. Dick) Star Wars: Episode 2, Escape From New York, The Matrix….to name a few. Even the (few) scenes exploring the philosophy of self which came so effortlessly to Verhoeven’s 1990 film seemed lifted straight from Morpheus’ mouth from The Matrix.

It was a spectacle for sure, but that’s a given in this day and age. Worth a watch? Perhaps. It’s difficult not to draw parallels to the original film, I wish it were. I had hoped this would be a fresh take on the story which stood alone as a worthy interpretation of Dick’s 1966 short. The visuals certainly gave that impression, but that really is where the differences end. Similarities must be drawn, because quite frankly it seemed to be a rehash of the same story. Which begs the question, why make it at all?? (Oh yeah, vast box office takings……silly me).

Joe McElderry set for a home run for Teenage Cancer Trust

Joe McElderry will be taking part in the Great North Run for the third year running to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

 

Joe, who is the charity’s celebrity ambassador and North East Patron, completed last year’s 13.1 mile race in 1 hour and 40 minutes and smashed his fundraising target by raising over £10,000. All monies raised from sponsorship will go towards developing Teenage Cancer Trust services and facilities for young people diagnosed with cancer in the North East.

 

Joe, whose new album is out now, has been fitting in training around his packed schedule. He said, “Completing the Great North Run last year was such a great experience. The atmosphere was incredible and I was really happy with my time.”

 

Talking about Teenage Cancer Trust, he adds, “Teenage Cancer Trust is an absolutely amazing charity. Their units feel like home and really help to boost morale for the young people being treated there. Not only do they look great, but there is a real family atmosphere in the charity and I love that! Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the six young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day.  We build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them.  We want every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live.

 

Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer.  Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference to their whole experience.  There are currently 22 Teenage Cancer Trust units across the country, including two in Newcastle – both of which Joe helped to officially open.

 

Teenage Cancer Trust also educates young people and health professionals about cancer to ensure a swift diagnosis and referral to specialist support.  Cancer in young people is rare but we want young people to know the common signs and symptoms so they can seek medical advice if they are worried.

Londoner’s Life – Overheard 39 by Phil Ryan

I’ve had a frantic week replying to emails and finishing a writing project. But I still had three windows of opportunity to sort out another London overheard. Found myself in Hungerford in Oxford mid- week at a fancy gastro pub. And caught this brief gem from a couple sat watching a traditional looking house barge mooring by the side of a canal. Man to wife pleasantly “Look at that Miriam that’s the kind of life I could get used to” Miriam in a bored tone “I don’t think so you actually have to work quite hard to run one of those things. You are completely useless and workshy and you know it” Ouch! But here’s this week’s stolen moment from a bar at a gig in Central London:

Two Goth looking girls: Girl one “I couldn’t believe it really it’s not like I’m on Facebook that much” Girl two “So he cut you off just like that” Girl one “Yeah I know and I really liked him” Girl two “What made him turn so funny then?” Girl one “Well he saw me updating my status when we were doing it at his mum’s house” Girl two giggling “No” Girl one proudly “Well he was going at it like he does and I figured he was busy and they’ve got that wireless Infinity broadband you know the really fast one. So I replied to a couple of messages” Girl two “What while he was..” Girl one “Hm I mean it was good but sometimes I don’t feel that involved. He used to just shove away for ages and think it was good for me. But I didn’t mind that much. He was sweet really the little noises he’d make” Girl two “So what’d he say?” Girl one “Ah you know the usual it’s not you it’s me but I noticed that he changed his status that night. I mean how insensitive. I’m glad he’s gone cos I really I don’t need that kind of negative energy in my life to be honest” Girl two “So you’re with TZ now right” Girl one “Yeah he’s not that bright but he’s loyal and he’s got a car. Oh yeah and he’s got really nice legs and his bum is like really firm” They then started talking about the bands……..

I must just say at this point in case you think I just make this stuff up. I often record bits with my phone (especially in cafes) and I now carry a small pad and pen everywhere as well of course as my trusty Samsung. So although it might be not exactly the words they are very very very close. Trust me I don’t have this kind of imagination.

Peter Aspden & Bettany Hughes debate luxury & culture at the V&A Museum

What does it take to create something of note? 

That is what Frost went to find out.  Arts & culture commentator Peter Aspden and award-winning historian Bettany Hughes were a great match together. The bounced off each other perfectly. Peter noted iconic moments in history – Elvis Presley singing Hound-dog to an actual hound dog, Michael Jackson – and Bettany, just back from a trip to Albania funded by Lord Rothschild,  certainly knows her stuff. Things I found out from her during the debate: it took 18 years to build the pyramids and they were made not by slaves as is popularly thought, but by citizens of Egypt for the gods.

While Peter said we should not be beholden to the past, Bettany said: “we live with the past, it is in everything we think and do”.

It was a lively debate with lots of good questions being asked. Chivas Brothers hosted the event at the beautiful Victoria & Albert museum. Chivas Brothers certainly know about good things taking time. Their whiskey takes 20 odd years to make. I saw one bottle which was thirty years old. They started making whiskey in the 1800s. They are now in the top 3 whiskey makers in the world.

The debate also raised the point that one of the reasons a 21-year-old whiskey is such a luxury is that the moment you drink it 21-years is gone.

If whiskey does not have an age statement then it is three years old, as whiskey has to be at least three years old.

Netflix hosts evening of Bollywood style and Cinema


Netflix rolled out the red carpet for an evening of Bollywood Style and Movies in central London this week – celebrating the great range of Bollywood movies available on the service, and Frost Magazine went along to have some fun.  Indian actress Preeya Kalidas and rising UK film star Adam Deacon were amongst the guests to enjoy cocktails and watch preview clips from upcoming Bollywood movies.

We had delicious cocktails and I got a make up lesson from legendary make up artist Ruby Hammer. My favourite cocktail was the Ginger Dahling.

The night was hosted by Nihal who also entertained the crowd of Bollywood gliterratti, the fashion pack and media with a DJ set of Bollywood fusion music. Beauty and style press were also treated to a make up master class from Ruby Hammer – showcasing some of the most iconic looks from Bollywood’s history whilst food and drink drawing inspiration from Bollywood was served throughout the evening. Konnie Huq and Asian music producer Rishi Rich were also on hand to enjoy the style sessions and to sip Chai Collins and Ginger Dahling cocktails at the exposure Gallery, W1.

Alfa Romeo has launched a new campaign in aid of Heart Research UK, encouraging fashion conscious members of the public to ‘get smart for hearts’ by wearing one of six specially designed pocket squares to support the charity’s fight against heart disease.

 

The limited edition pocket squares, priced at £14.99 each, are handmade in Italy using 100% Italian silk and designed by some well-known faces from the worlds of sport, business and fashion.

 

Design contributions have come from Dragons Den star and entrepreneur Peter Jones CBE; Team GB long jumper Chris Tomlinson and actor Tom Ellis,  together with fashion label PPQ and 2012 Alfa Romeo Young Designer of the Year Janine Clark.

 

Marking a landmark anniversary for Alfa Romeo, a sixth pocket square design celebrates 50 years of the Giulia. Launched in 1962, the Alfa Giulia was renowned for its style, performance and innovation, selling over a million examples during its 15 year production run.

Salmon Temaki
1 serving
Preparation time: 5 min



1 fresh salmon fillet or 1 slice of smoked salmon
1 nori (seaweed) sheets, cut in half
1 tsp of Dijon mustard
1 tsp of low fat fromage frais


·     Cut the salmon in squares.
·     Mix the mustard with fromage frais (add more according to taste).
·     Mix the salmon with sauce and spread on 1 nori sheet, then roll it.


* Tip: you can add some cucumber sticks or other greens in each Temaki.

* Health Benefits: Salmon is full of Omega 3, and the seaweed is full of nutritional vitamins.


Sweet and Sour Rolls with Goji Berry Jam

1 serving
Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 10 min



For the jam:
Can be refrigerated for up to 4 days

5 tbsp of Goji berries • water (enough to cover the berries)
1 tbsp liquid sweetener (or more to taste)
1 tsp of agar-agar powder
1 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp strawberry flavouring

·     Pour Goji berries into a small nonstick saucepan and cover them with water.
·     Add the liquid sweetener and lemon juice then bring to the boil.
·     Finally, add the agar-agar, mix thoroughly then leave to simmer for 7 minutes, constantly stirring the                            mixture as to prevent it from burning and sticking to the pan (add a little water if necessary).
·     When cooked, the berries must be inflated and caramelised
·     Place jam in a glass jar (it will keep for several days in the fridge).

For the paste:
30 g corn flour
1 tbsp skimmed milk powder
100 g low fat fromage frais or Quark
1 egg
30 g of baking powder or dried yeast


·      Mix all the ingredients together
·      Spread on to on a non-stick foil and bake it until brown at 180° C.
·      When cold, spread some Goji berry jam on it, add some turkey slices and a few salad leaves. Roll it and                      then cut into small pieces.

* Health Benefits: Goji Berries are a great source of antioxidants

Thai Style Noodle Salad

1 serving
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes




½ pack of shirataki noodles
Chopped fresh coriander
1 chicken breast
1 tbsp of low fat cream
1 drop of coconut flavouring (optional)
2 pinches of curry powder
1 tsp of sesame seeds
1 tbsp of soya sauce
1 tsp of rice vinegar (mirin)
1 or 2 pieces of steamed broccoli, chopped


·     Cook the shirataki noodles in boiling water for five minutes and then rinse them with cold water.  Leave              aside for later.
·     Cut the chicken breast in small pieces and cook it with low fat cream, curry powder and coconut
flavouring.  Let it cool.
·     Prepare the sauce by mixing soya sauce, rice vinegar, coriander and sesame seeds.
·     Add the chicken pieces to the shirataki noodles, add the steamed broccoli and pour the sauce over.

* Shirataki Noodles are calorie free and low in carbohydrates!


Little Chocolate and Matcha Cream Cakes

6 serving (two little pieces of cake for your dessert)
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes



For the biscuit:

4 eggs
2 tsp of corn flour
2 tsp of baking powder
2 tbsp of sweetener
1tbsp of low fat sugar free cocoa powder


For the Matcha cream:

200ml of skimmed milk
1 tsp of corn flour
1 tsp of Matcha powder
1 egg
3 sheets of gelatine
2 tbsp of sweetener

·      Separate the egg yolks from the whites, and put the egg whites in a large mixing bowl. Beat them at              high speed until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, mix the egg yolks with the sweetener, corn flour                baking powder and cocoa powder. Gently whisk in the egg whites. Mix everything well using a metal               whisk. Pour the mixture into a medium-sized square cake baking tin and bake for 10 mins, at 180° C in a                 pre-heated oven.

·      When the biscuit is done, put it in the fridge to cool.
·      Place the gelatine sheets into a mixing bowl with cold water and leave for 5 mins.
·      In another mixing bowl, combine the egg, corn flour and sweetener.
·      In a small saucepan, warm up the milk and add the Matcha powder.
·      Next, take the gelatin leaves, squeeze out the excess water and add them to the warm milk. Mix well to               make sure the gelatine is dissolved completely.
·      Slowly pour the warm milk over your egg mixture, mixing constantly. Pour the mixture back into the       saucepan and let it cook on a medium heat. You must continue to mix the cream and make sure it cooks        on a medium temperature.
·      After 5-6 mins the cream should start to thicken. Pour it into a mixing bowl and leave it in the fridge to               cool. In 1-2 hours, when the cream has cooled, you can start assembling the cake.
·      Cut the biscuit lengthwise in the middle and spread out the cream in the middle. Leave the cake in the               fridge over night.
·     Cut some little squares of this cake for your fashion week bento box!
