GENTLEMAN’S TAP
Signposting the return of the quintessential gentleman’s style of dance. Hollywood movies starring Fred Astaire inspired men all over the world to dress sharp and move smooth, but in recent years tap dance became more synonomous with workmens boots, dirty jeans and bin lids (think STOMP!). In 2012 Tap is back and it has had a suave new makeover. So You Think You Can Dance winner MATT FLINT re-invents the style for contemporary gents through charismatic moves, fine tailoring and a dapper sense of style not only in dress but in dance techniques and movements.

GOTHIC HIP HOP
Inspired and influenced by epic gothic movies like the Underworld series (the latest instalment Underworld: Awakening is out in January 2012), gothic hip hop takes cutting edge Hip Hop and streetdance moves and gives them a dark and dramatic twist, creating a unique and ground breaking style for 2012. Beware what lurks in the darkness…

BELLY-BOLLY DANCE
You think you know what Bellydance is all about? Think again. 2012 sees the style evolving and embracing the glamour, giltz and the soundtrack of Bollywood movies. The moves are fast paced and feature Bollywood’s trademark expressive hands and undulating hips. Whilst the Indian twist gives the style a fresh edge, all the classic Bellydance benefits are up for grabs; a flatter tummy, toned arms and a chance to express your sensual side.

Featuring amazing one-off performances, inspiring dance classes, life changing auditions, fascinating interviews from dancing and performing idols, MOVE IT is perfect for beginners, professionals and students, or just simply for an inspiring day out – it is the only show for all things dance!

Londoners Life 22 By Phil Ryan

Londoner’s Life 22 – By Phil Ryan
Good grief you go away for a week (a quick jaunt to sunny Tenerife) and they flood Oxford Street, paint lots of new double lines around Westminster courtesy of the greed and misery commissars that run the place and ratchet up the Mayoral campaign nonsense with a he said no he said between Boris and Ken voraciously covered by the TV news and papers leaving all the other candidates to waste their time on futile media campaigns that no one pays a blind bit of attention to. But that said leaving London for a week let me take stock of the general state of our new found recessionary status. Most London Councils are now slashing meals on wheels for the elderly whilst at the same time raking in more cash from those living (trapped) in council accommodation by shoving up the rents by 8% and shoving up parking costs by 10% in some places. I could be missing something but is it me or is London slowly returning to the time of Dickens? It is his centenary celebratory year after all. It seems to be a new strategy of lets attack the poor who are clearly the cause all this economic misery after all. It’s the feckless poor who ran the banking system into the ground as any fule kno. What next work houses? My own Council the completely terrible Camden are happy to announce grand schemes to commission art works and big glass media hubs for the new windswept areas around the ghastly acreage of Kings Cross. And then they close most of the libraries! A bit of a cultural faux pas surely? Hm. But enough of such grim tidings I hear you say what about something positive in all the gloom and doom in London. Well there’s the Olympic bandwagon trundling on with boom times predicted for the hotels and restaurants, so that’s something eh? But what about right now?
Tricky to be honest. It’s a bit gloomy generally in our fair capital. I wandered around the fabulous Spitalfields Market on Sunday to see stallholders staring at each other. Xmas spending fatigue one told me whilst another chap pointed out the now constant sales running on every high street. So shopping in some areas is nose diving especially the cuter arty markets – however Westfield in Shepherds Bush resembles a mad scramble to buy everything that’s not nailed down. It’s like a scene out of Planet of the Apes most weekends now. Only most apes are better dressed and seem to have more manners. So I think with Brent Cross set to expand we have arrived at the true dawn of the year of the shopping centre. The poor old London high street really is at the last gasp saloon. Even the efforts of the wonderful Wedge Card people trying to save our local shops with their brilliant supportive of local traders discount scheme is fighting an uphill struggle and quite rightly deserves our support. Conversely the parasites at Groupon appear to be draining the life out of many a small London trader – their mealy mouthed PR angle being we’re sending lots of new customers their way. And in a way they are right except the amount they take on the deals they offer makes it impossible for some of the small traders to enjoy their new customers before they’ve been driven out of business. Hm. I’m sorry to report I appear to have hit a bleak streak. It must be the weather.
Three new businesses lasted 3 months in my own area recently before biting the dust. Doh! There I go again. But positive London stuff I hear you cry – where’s the positive? Well the many museums are gearing up for lots of late night events which are fantastic and generally free – er there’s the latest dining craze to hit the capital and yes it is the flood of Sushi restaurants opening everywhere. Not my cup of tea but Londoners seemingly can’t get enough of that raw fish. I’ve always loved the food fads that ripple across London. Of course of late another fad is the shisha cafes springing up everywhere. You see trendy young things enveloped in a blue fug of sweet smelling tobacco whilst guzzling a latte and pomegranate juice! It’s like being in the middle eat without the bombs and oppression. And finally the wave after wave of tiny apartments on sale fill the Evening Standard most Wednesdays now. They’re all called The Point – The Hub – The Quarter – The tiny overpriced box where you can hear downstairs evacuating their bowels (okay I made that one up) But London’s property struggle is now forcing more and more poor sods into these ghastly blocks with a view over a petrol station or a railway bridge. The pictures make them look great. Just go and stand next to one to get the true picture. Hemmed in with a council estate that’s twinned with Kabul, they are attempts at gentrification that really miss the point. Oops I went all negative again! But I suppose they are homes after a fashion and many seem okay in price although most are in charming places like Kidbrooke (deemed too unsafe for gangs to live in) or Catford (deemed too unsafe for Mammals to live in) But do people still buy these rubbishy little boxes. Yes they do. And do they seem to mind? No. It’s a London thing.

Mixed Up Productions presents As You Like It

Firstly, let me say that I did like it! Time passed quickly while I was watching this production, which is always a good sign.

The physical energy of this production was evident from the outset, with the sparring between the two brothers practically spilling over into the audience. However it was in Scene II, with the arrival on stage of Rosalind (Clare Langford) and Celia (Gabrielle Curtis), that the emotional and intellectual content became equally apparent, drawing this reviewer fully into the narrative. From this point onwards, with one or two exceptions, the pace continued unabated, and, before we knew it, we had reached the interval. The second half was, if anything, more engaging than the first, with one scene blending seamlessly into another, so that on reaching the final wedding scene and closing epilogue, one was left still wishing for more.

Rosalind and Celia were each imbued with a spirit of liveliness and playfulness by the respective actors, both of whom spoke Shakespeare’s words as naturally as modern-day English. Also excellent in that respect were Yvonne Riley and Owen Nolan: the former bringing a chilling sense of menace to the character of Duke Senior, and the latter playing the bucolic Corin in a very laid-back and credible manner. Owen was also responsible for much of the music, along with Catriona Mackenzie and her haunting flute, using Irish folk ballads to bring the atmosphere of the forest to life.

Will Wheeler and Ryan Wichert gave convincing performances as Orlando and Oliver respectively, and Kate Bancroft (Phebe) and Jeffrey Ho (Silvius) were hilarious in their scenes together, although Silvius was quite camp for a man so passionately in love with a woman! Overall, the company acquitted themselves admirably, capably directed by Marianna Vogt.

There are obvious staging difficulties that arise with a cast of 16 in a venue as small as the White Bear. I had a restricted view for a significant amount of the time, and did not get the full effect of the final scene. It would be nice to see the production on a larger stage, which would also give the director the chance to develop her Tent City theme, to which it was difficult to do justice in such a confined space.

I am told that tickets are selling very well, but there are still a few left, so if you fancy an evening’s romp through the Forest of Arden in the company of some talented performers, then make sure and get yourself down to Kennington one evening this week.

Seal and Heidi Klum Might Still Get Back Together.

A heartbroken Seal has appeared on TV and hinted that he hopes to work things out with his wife of seven years, Heidi Klum.

The singer has been promoting his new album Soul 2.

Seal was asked if a reconciliation was possible and replied: “You can never say never.

“I don’t know at this point if I would like to get back together. If it were that easy, we would still be together, that is the reality?

“Whether we get back together or not, it may happen, I can’t speak for her.”

The 48-year-old also said that the couple have been having arguments.

“I can’t speak for my wife and I’m not going to sit here and BS you and say we haven’t had problems. Of course we have had problems, otherwise why have we split up?”

“This is not a charade. We have problems, we have issues, but to our credit we have always been able to talk about them, to confront them. To assume that any couple goes without arguing is just nonsense.”

Seal is also still wearing his wedding ring. People magazine has claimed that the couple have been working on their problems for six months but have been putting on a ‘perfect couple’ front.

Vanessa Paradis: Split Rumours 'False'.

After much speculation Vanessa Paradis has said that the rumours that she has split from Johnny Depp are “false”.

The singer and actress featured on the French TV show Le Grand Journal to promote her new film Cafe de Flore. She had previously been vague about rumours that her 14-year relationship with Depp had hit the rocks.

Presenter Marc Denisot asked Paradise to put at end to speculation if the rumours were not true and Vanessa replied: “Well, yes, it’s false! Of course it is false,”

She went on to say,

“When people say that we are buying houses in France, we break up in the winter, we get married in the summer? This is my 12th pregnancy! All of this doesn’t matter. But when it can hurt my children, especially because all this is only business,”

Paradis was also upset that the rumours could hurt her family, The couple have two children together, Lily Rose, 12, and Jack, nine.

Covert Affairs Season Two Review

Really. Mondays, 9pm

Covert Affairs is the show that fills in the Alias shapped holes in  spy fans lives. A well written CIA drama with an attractive young women at the helm.
Piper Perabo is an incredibly talented actress, making Annie Walker both vulnerable and capable. I’m a fan of this American spy drama. It’s American entertainment at it’s best. Walker reminds me of the Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire quote; “Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in heels”. Walker is a women in a man’s world kicking ass and taking names. A great thing to see.

Golden Globe nominee Piper Perabo returns for another brand new and exclusive series of the hit US spy show.

Annie Walker (Perabo) is a smart, stunning and very recent CIA field operative in one of the organisation’s most secretive branches, the Domestic Protection Agency. Dressing up in weird and wonderful disguises to infiltrate the bad guys? Check. Running and shooting in six-inch heels? No problem. No matter how hotshot she becomes, not being able to sort out her own love life? Sigh.

There was high drama at the end of the last series – Annie’s ex Ben, the man who disappeared after a holiday romance in Sri Lanka, walked into CIA headquarters and gave himself up, confessing that he was a rogue agent. Sent with Annie back to Sri Lanka to prove he’s one of the good guys and crack an arms dealing ring, we last saw the reunited love birds on a helicopter zooming out of the country, Ben laying in Annie’s arms.

Series two starts much as series one did. Just as Annie thinks that there might be a future for her and Ben, he buggers off again. Men! But there’s no time to think – Annie is assigned to protect an Estonian tennis player who is considered a CIA asset.

Starring Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham, The O.C.’s Peter Gallagher, Lost’s Sendhil Ramamurthy and 24’s Kari Matchett.

Suits Review

Suits

Dave. Tuesdays, 9pm

I wanted to see this legal drama since seeing the adverts for it on the tube. The trailer made me more interested. Although Suits was hyped, I am glad to say it didn’t disappoint. It is a smart, classy and witty legal drama. It is well acted and the writing is top notch. A great way to spend an evening.

Harvey and Mike are representing Wyatt, a client who has invented a satellite phone that can fit into a pocket. Whilst Harvey gets the glory of sitting in on the high-stakes investor meeting, he orders Mike to take the less glamorous role of filing the patent update.

Not impressed with this, Mike decides to take a short cut and asks fellow colleague Gregory to file the patent in exchange for proofing Gregory’s active brief. The brief turns out to be thousands of pages long and after pulling an all-nighter, Mike still doesn’t complete it. As a result of this, Gregory refuses to file the patent update and another party beats them to filing for the patent first.

Upon hearing news of this, Harvey is fuming at Mike for jeopardising the multi-million investment. However, all is not as it seems, as it turns out Mike isn’t the only one who has hindered things. Harvey receives harsh penalties from the courtroom for turning up late and having his mobile phone switched on. After confronting Judge Pearl about his rationality, Pearl reveals to Harvey that he doesn’t like him professionally or personally considering he slept with his wife.

Now Harvey and Mike must do ultimate damage control if they even want a chance of winning this case. This includes visiting Pearl’s wife, who might not be as honest as she looks.
