BBC conjures up series four of Merlin {TV}

Smash hit, family favourite, Merlin has been recommissioned for a fourth series of magical adventure for BBC One.

The fantasy drama; starring Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James, Anthony Head, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby and Richard Wilson; continues to enchant audiences on Saturday nights. The current series on air is pulling in an average of over six million viewers and a total of 24.3 per cent share of the audience.

Ben Stephenson, Controller Drama Commissioning, says: “Merlin continues to perform outstandingly well against X Factor and offers audiences an alternative treat on Saturday nights. I’m pleased to confirm that the magical world of Camelot will be returning next year for a fourth series of this fresh and modern retelling of a classic British legend.”

Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, executive producers for Shine TV, said: “We are both delighted with the continuing success of Merlin, and relish the chance to take the series to the next level with the long-awaited arrival of the Knights of the Round Table.”

Series three has seen a host of high-profile guest-stars including: Emilia Fox, Tom Ellis, Miriam Margoyles, Warwick Davies and Pauline Collins. Series three will continue on Saturday evenings on BBC One until the nail biting finale on the 4 December.

The new 10 part series will begin filming in March.

Merlin has also enjoyed phenomenal international success, selling to 180 countries internationally, with series two providing a smash hit success for the Syfy channel in the US, which has already bought the third series currently in production.

A New Moon for Eastenders {TV}

Eastenders have revealed that hot on the heels of the return of Alfie Moon this autumn, Walford is soon to welcome Alfie’s cousin, Michael Moon, played by Steve John Shepherd, well known for his portrayal of Jo in This Life.

Michael Moon is a regular lothario, a cheeky chap with a silver tongue, who loves a lot of female attention – much like his older cousin, Alfie. However, Michael has a slightly more manipulative streak and a competitive nature, which means he doesn’t think twice about screwing people over – even those he loves.

Michael loves to live life dangerously, taking risks, and can be as ruthless as he is charming.

Steve John Shepherd has previously been seen in This Life, Layer Cake, Waking The Dead and, more recently, the BBC Three sitcom Lunch Monkeys.

Regarding his arrival in Albert Square, Steve commented: “I can vividly remember watching the first ever episode of EastEnders and I’m very excited to be joining such a fantastic and iconic programme. Michael Moon will be an exciting character to play – on the surface he a loveable, cheeky chappy but, underneath, he has hidden depths which will be exciting to explore.”

Bryan Kirkwood, executive producer of EastEnders, explains: “I’ve been a fan of Steve John Shepherd’s work for years. He’s a fantastic signing for EastEnders, an exciting addition to the Moon family, and is set to cause a big splash in Albert Square from the moment he arrives.”

Stefans TV Picks; 31st May

Monday 31st – BBC 2, 21:00
I’m not a big fan of period dramas, I would rather read Pride and Prejudice, Cranford annoyed me and I keep expecting Mark Heap to do a pratfall or start juggling in Lark Rise to Candleford. However, I’m expecting more than just stuffy women in bonnets and bile rising oh so polite kids in todays ‘The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister’. Anne Lister lived from 1791 to 1840, was a Yorkshire Landowner, rural gentlewoman and diarist, she also courted huge amounts of controversy due to being a lesbian and living with her lover. Based on Lister’s coded diary, this is one costume drama that promises to be more compelling than most others.

Tuesday 1st – ITV 1, 22:35
I tried, I really tried, I wanted to find a TV show better than my selection, but I really couldn’t, so…Shaun of The Dead it is. This brilliant zom-rom-com by the guys who bought us Spaced and Hot Fuzz shows what most of us would probably do in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Immensely funny and full of brilliant references and homage’s to the zombie genre (Shaun works at Foree Electronics, Ken Foree starred in Dawn of the Dead and I think his mother was purposely named Barbara just so they could utter line ‘We’re coming to get you Barbara’ a play on the line ‘They’re coming to get you Barbara’ from Night of the Living Dead) if I had a pick of the week, this would be it.

Wednesday 2nd – BBC 2, 21:00
Myths and Legends intrigue me, not the magical and mystical aspect of them, but how and why they started. One of the most well known myths is that of Atlantis. Tonight we shall join historian Bettany Hughes in Atlantis: A Timewatch Special, as she uses geology, archaeology and historic events to examine the natural disaster that inspired the legend of this island.

Thursday 3rd – Sky Movies Premier, 17:00
Stop motion animation films have come a long way sing King Kong terrorised New York back in 1933 and through Peter and The Wolf, Wallace and Gromit and Jack Skellington we come to Coraline. Based on the book by Neil Gaimen, Coraline is the story of a young girl bored with her life who, after finding a hidden door in her new house, makes nightly excursions into a fantastical parallel world that mimics her own life but changes things so all is perfect for her. A brilliant slightly nightmarish movie that everyone can watch and everyone will enjoy.

Friday 4th – Sky Movies Premier, 20:00
Johnny Depp is known for his wacky outlandish roles, in Public Enemies we get to see him be sensible for a change. Starring Depp as notorious gangster John Dillinger and Christian Bale as hard-nosed FBI agent Melvin Purvis charged with tracking him down and capturing him, Public Enemies brings all the action you’d expect from a gangster movie, but also shows the relationships between Dillinger and his crew, his moll and most importantly the game (in his eyes) between him and Purvis. A nice change for anyone like me who is sick of Depp prancing about in make up.

Saturday 5th – BBC 2, 22:00
The series I’m in a Rock and Roll Band has been a good look at all the elements of a rock band (I’ll jus ignore that they lumped us bassist’s in with saxophonists and backing dancers as ‘the other one’ in a band *grumblegrumble*!) and will be ending with a studio discussion presented by old punk Jonathon Ross, rock fan Lauren Laverne, Police drummer Stewart Copeland and DJ Mark Radcliff discuss theirs and the nations favourite rock’n’rollers and debate all things rock live in front of a studio audience. After a nation wide poll they also be revealing the countries dream band! I’m hopin for Thom Yorke on vocals, Slash on guitar (just for his sweeeet solos), Travis Barker on drums, Flea on bass, the Gogol Bordello girls for backing vocals/hi-jinks and Billy Corgan as song writer!

Sunday 6th – BBC1, 20:00
I like telly. And I like to see things I like get awards for being good, which is why the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA without the F) will be on in my house today. Honouring all thing’s telly and giving out those shiny one eyed faces the only bad thing is it’s being presented by the BBC’s flavour of the month Graham Norton, he should stick to annoying reality gameshows and shouting innuendo’s on his chatshow! Other than that sit back and watch the pretty people get pretty awards.

Next Week's TV Choices

Seven days of mental cooks, singing and dancing high schoolers and thousands of runners awaits as I take a look at what is worth tuning in for next week.

Monday 19th – One of my favourite shows…of course this is mainly due to the competitions they have every week, The Gadget Show (ch5 20.00) will be keeping us all up to date in the world of tech and presenter Jon Bentley will be seeing what all the fuss is about with the new Apple iPad.

Tuesday 20th – you know that old Homerism ‘a hundred channels and theres nothing on’ never a truer word was spoken about Tuesday’s TV, unless your able to fill your day with music channels (Scuzz, my personal favourite) tune into Channel 4 at 21:00 for Heston’s Titanic Feast, a cookery show that doesn’t try to teach us anything or tell what we should be eating. This week, nutjob Blumenthal will be serving up Antarctic Roll, Camel Burger and a flambéed Iceberg.

Wednesday 21st – Three words…Planes, Trains and Automobiles, if you haven’t seen this I pity you, 20:00 on SkyMovies Comedy this film follows two men trying to get home for Thanksgiving an stars the greatly missed John Candy and Steve Martin when he was still funny.

Thursday 22nd – Now when writing this I planned on giving all you lovely readers one programme per day that you should see, Thursday threw up a conundrum, ‘You Have Been Watching’, channel 4 22:00, presented by the outstandingly cynical Charlie Brooker with a panel including Robert Webb, Jason Manford and Sharon Horgan review the highs and lows of the tellybox whereas over on channel Dave at 22.20 we find episode 6 of the excellent Psychoville….but I suppose theres always Dave ja vu!

Friday 23rd – 20:00…channel 4…GLEE….that’s all you need to know about Friday.

Saturday 24th – To all those who are fans of the Doctor (which I include myself one of) the answer as to whether Matt Smith is as good or better than David Tennant as Doctor Who is still unanswered, although at 18:20 on BBC1 we may find out as the Doctor once again meets the too-scary-for-a-kids-show Weeping Angels, and if your not as much of a geek as me then head over to SkyMovies Showcase at 20:00 for Jack Nicolson’s brilliant performance (and the sinister Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched) in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.

Sunday 25th – Ahh The London Marathon, an epic event pushing people to the limits of fitness, reaching their goals and achieving their dreams, London will be awash with runners, cameras, spectators and discarded water bottles and thanks to BBC1 from 10:00 onwards we can have the best seats in the house, presented by the delightful Sue Barker it gives another chance to play Marathon bingo, man dressed as Nun (tick), three people running as a boat (tick) a Rhino(…)
