Easter by Gem Blaney | Poetry Corner

easterbunnyphotocredit-wikipediaEaster, by Gem Blaney: Gem is a talented young poet from the West Country. Frost asked her to write about Easter especially for us. Here it is:

A man rises;
not from slumber,
but from days of death
behind two stones.

His human body was no longer
still, on a bed of concrete
skin tinted blue,
lips with no breath to pass through.

See modern world
dressed up as a hare
hiding shells of chocolate
for children to find.

Voices squealing, bellies aching,
church bells ringing
forcing the past
back onto the present.

Unintentionally, but successfully
with each generation,
the fascination with egg shaped sweets
overcomes the past.

Bank holiday Monday,
adults sighing and bank accounts stretching
hot cross buns, chocolate and animal shaped snacks
because it’s easter easter easter.

A Christian holiday
for those who believe
in the dead man who rose
and shifted two stones

For children today it’s another
‘off school’ to celebrate.
It is not their fault,
they don’t understand it’s about a profound mystery.

Not a day as grandiose as Christmas
(a man’s birth)
this is a man dead and reborn–
Surely more earth moving than chocolate eggs

Don’t you think?

Beech’s Chocolate Creams Review

Some things are more fun to review than others. Chocolate is one of those things right at the top of the enjoyable list.

We got sent a box of Beech’s Fine Chocolates Creams, actually, we got sent SIX boxes, and it really made our day. We devoured them in less than five days. Although we are not sure we should admit that.

The Essential Guide To Keeping Chickens | Easter Ideas

keepingchickensI have always harboured the dream of keeping chickens. One that I doubt will ever be realised as I live in the concrete jungle of London. But I can dream, and watch DVDs like The Essential Guide To Keeping Chickens about how I will look after the chickens that I will (hopefully) have one day.

A lot of great stuff is covered and the DVD is pretty thorough. It covers everything and if you are thinking of keeping chickens this will definitely help you decide. If you already have some, this will cover all of the gaps in your knowledge.

The presenters Jules Hudson and Suzie Baldwin are both brilliant and I really enjoyed this DVD. I learned a lot and the advice is down-to-earth and easy to follow. I don’t think I could clip a chicken’s wing with scissors. This was an entertaining and informative lesson in keeping chickens. An essential for keeping chickens. Good stuff.

Covered in the DVD:

Why keep chickens?
Choosing your chickens
Hen houses and food
Handling chickens
The chicken medicine chest
Mating and murder most fowl!

This DVD from Stitchcombe Productions is perfect for Easter. If you would like a few extra eggs this Easter and can spare a corner of your garden, then why not buy the NEW DVD Keeping Chickens? The DVD is part of The Ideal Life Collection and it tells you everything you need to know – from a list of essential kit to expert tips to ensure that your hens are healthy and happy! Keeping chickens is easier than you think and also extremely rewarding. You could soon enjoy warm, freshly laid eggs every day and, next year, your very own Easter chicks.

Keeping Chickens – Suzie Baldwin has been keeping chickens ever since she was a child and has a real knack of demonstrating exactly how to handle and care for her ‘girls’. Prompted by questions from TV presenter, Jules Hudson, Suzie shows us how rewarding it is to find a clutch of freshly-laid eggs every day.

Whether you already have hens but could do with some extra tips or you’re a total novice, Keeping Chickens will prove invaluable. From practical ‘chicken check lists’ to a demonstration of how to clip a chicken’s wings with a pair of scissors in seconds.

Suzie Baldwin supplies eggs to rock stars and royalty and sells a wide variety of different breeds, hen houses and accessories from an idyllic farm in Hampshire.

Jules Hudson (Escape to the Country) has just started keeping chickens and has a genuine passion and enthusiasm to learn more all about his feathered friends.

The Ideal Life Collection DVDs RRP £14.99

Films to watch this Easter weekend

With the Easter break coming up, you might be looking for something fun to do over the long bank holiday weekend. A trip to the cinema is a great idea if the weather isn’t so good, and there is plenty to see at the moment.

If you’re after a funny film, I Give It a Year is a fantastic and funny British romantic comedy which looks at the pitfalls of rushing into marriage too fast. It has lots of moments that couples all over the country will recognise and cringe at! From getting annoyed with your partner for constantly singing the wrong lyrics to songs, to wishing your other half would get off their backside and take the bin out without you having to pester them. It’s a real and funny look at the ups and downs of everyday relationships and well worth a watch.

Another top film to check out this Easter weekend is Oz the Great and Powerful, a visually stunning prequel to timeless classic The Wizard of Oz which is suitable for all ages and well worth watching in 3D. James Franco, of 127 Hours and the Spider Man franchise fame, stars alongside Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams in this fun and entertaining film that will keep the whole family entertained.

Franco plays magician Oz, master of sleight of hand and misdirection but not someone you’d want to go and see for a genuine psychic clairvoyant reading as the good witch Glinda knows all too well. To put it another way, Oz is about as adept at reading tarot or doing real magic as a monkey is at tying his shoelaces: he’s a bit of a fraud. However, the Land of Oz is expecting a saviour and they believe Oz is with them to fulfil the prophecy. Will he come through for the munchkins and their fellow Oz inhabitants? Watch the film and find out!

Worldwide Easter traditions

Worldwide Easter traditions

Brought to you by Frost Magazine and Vyke

Users of Vyke – the UK-based provider of low-cost international calls over the internet (VoIP) – have shared their Easter traditions on its blog and Frost magazine. From food to religion, bells to bunnies, paragliding to water fighting, each country’s custom shows why this holiday is truly an international one:

· Ukraine – a traditional dish of egg and yam is served each year

· UK – hot cross buns, filled with dried fruits and spices with a cross on top (symbolizing the crucifixion) have come to mean as much as the traditional chocolate Easter egg

· France – tradition states the ringing of the Easter Bells on Sunday morning is what makes chocolate eggs magically appear in children’s baskets

· Nigeria – it’s a traditional family pursuit to decorate the simple every day breakfast egg between parents and their children

· Poland – ‘lany poniedziałek’ or ‘śmigus-dyngus’ – Poland has the Easter Monday custom of water fights! This began innocently by sprinkling young ladies with a bit of perfumed water, and developed into regular water fights in the streets

· Ghana – Every family gathers for a feast known as ‘the picnic’. The holiday is also quickly becoming renowned for the Annual Ghana Paragliding Festival, the sixth of which is this year

· Ireland – all of the public houses shut (!) and the country observes a no meat eating policy on Holy Friday, enjoying fish in its place

· Austria – between Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday morning mass, there are no church bells ringing. According to religious lore, they all fly to Rome so altar boys use ‘Ratschen’ (wooden rattles)

· Philippines – Easter involves little girls dressed as angels and a procession that usually starts very early in the morning, before dawn

· Romania – Children take part in Government organised contests such as ‘The Easter bunny gives you a gift’

· Brazil – Locals construct straw renditions of Jesus’s betrayer – Judas, beat them up, and then set each ablaze

· Australia – No Easter bunny for our antipodean friends. In pest conscious Australia it’s the Easter bilby instead. The bilby is an endangered Australian animal with long soft ears

· Sweden – it’s the Easter hare and not the bunny that delivers Swiss chocolate delight

· U.S – although now widespread, its believed the egg-hunt originated in the US

Commenting on the response: Vyke Chief Executive, Tore Hellebo said:

“Our user base is right across the world, so we thought a nice way to bring everyone together, whilst celebrating differences, was through a universal holiday like Easter.

“We were right, as everyone celebrates it, but in much localised ways.”
