Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

There was an air of excitement at the Odean, Leicester Square in London as we waited to watch the new Captain America Film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

After the excellent trailers for Guardians of The Universe and Maleficent the film started and we all put on our 3D glasses. The film starts well, set after the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, is living quietly in Washington, D.C. and adjusting to a modern world. He is treated like a hero but remains modest and decent, despite being able to jump out of a plane without a parachute.

At the beginning of the film Captain America, along with the Black Widow, rescue some S.H.I.E.L.D colleagues from a hostage situation, but it is the start of something bigger. Captain America is forced to join forces with the Black Widow and new character, The Falcon, as a terrible conspiracy comes to light. Something Nick Fury (a brilliant character and as excellent as ever) has had suspicions about. To top it all off they have a hardcore assassin on their tail: the Winter Soldier. He has had thousands of kills and always finishes his mission. Will the Captain and his team break his winning streak?

This film is my favourite Marvel film. Quite a recommendation considering I love a good Hollywood blockbuster. The action scenes- and in particular a car chase that I don’t want to give anything away about- are just stunning and imaginative. This film really brings something new to the game, and ups the stakes while it’s at it. The script is amazing, the actions scenes are great. In fact, the film just fires on all cylinders.

The characters are equally brilliant and I love the decency and genuineness of Captain America. He is a superhero and a good person to boot.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a brilliant movie. I really enjoyed it and want to see it again. Can’t wait for the next installment either. I would give this film a full five stars. Great entertainment.

Celebrities Turn Out For Turbo Screening

Celebrities and their children headed down to the Vue West End in Leicester Square on Sunday 6th October 2013 to watch Turbo, the 3D computer-animated comedy sports film. They all seemed to enjoy the film.

The Amazing Spiderman Premiere

Last Night the beautiful Donna Air walk the red carpet at The Amazing Spiderman Premiere in Leicester Square, donned in the W Hamond, presented by CW Sellors & Henshall dress and jewel collaboration. At Frost magazine we loved her dress.

British brands W Hamond, presented by CW Sellors & Henshall last night unveiled Donna Air sheathed in a British made Whitby Jet & Diamond Spider Web dress at ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ premiere at London’s Leicester Square. The intricate Spider and cobweb design by Scott Henshall and created by W Hamond is crafted from Whitby Jet combined with diamonds spinning its magical web around a daring little black dress. Presenter of Fashion TV, Hofit Golan, was also seen in W Hamond Whitby Jet & Diamond jewellery.

CW Sellors are no strangers to the silver screen and were involved with the movie possession where Gwyneth Paltrow can be seen wearing their Whitby Jet jewellery.

Scott Henshall “King of the Red Carpet” originally stole the headlines at the first Spiderman world premiere in 2002 when Jodie Kidd strutted down the red carpet in a web of lace. Henshall then eclipsed that dress at the ‘Spider Man 2’ world premiere in 2004 when Samantha Mumba wore a £5million diamond encrusted dress, which to this day is still the ‘world’s most expensive dress’.

Love and Other Drugs {Film Preview}

While Leicester Square was mobbed by screaming Harry Potter fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars arriving for the film’s premiere, two Hollywood A-listers slipped un-noticed past the crowds of autograph seekers into the cinema next door. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway were there to screen their new film ‘Love and Other Drugs’ and I was lucky enough to be invited along to watch it.

The film, directed by Edward Zwick is based on the non-fiction book ‘Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman’ by Jamie Reidy. Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall, a womanizing Viagra salesman. Exuding confidence and charm he’s the object of desire of the women he encounters and the envy of every man including his richer, more successful, less aesthetically blessed younger brother. Despite the bravado, Jamie is deeply insecure, his need to prove himself to his parents deriving from unfulfilled potential due to having ADD. Gyllenhaal found the part difficult to research as the world of pharmaceutical sales is incredibly secretive. He says “I played a CIA agent in a movie and it was easier to research that than researching the world of pharmaceutical sales.”

Hathaway plays Maggie Murdock. At first Maggie, an artist, appears to be an alluring free spirit with an insatiable libido who won’t let anyone tie her down but her behaviour stems from a deep rooted fear of being rejected due to having an incurable degenerative disease. Hathaway’s clearly invested alot of energy into the part admitting that she found it difficult to leave behind. Insight-fully she remarks “When people are going through difficult times some people run towards others while there are some who push people in the other direction isolating themselves.”

Parkinson’s features heavily in this film and Ed Zwick commented: “We wanted to create a juxtaposition of the character of Jamie and his pill for everything and Maggie with an incurable disease”

Now this makes me feel old…the film’s classed as a period piece. Set in the 90’s, it opens in a second hand electronics store and there are plenty of gadgets to spot for those keen on nostalgia.

There are funny moments, but it’s not a rom-com in the typical sense of the word. They director worked with the cast improvising scenes to steer the film away from the rom-com stereotype. For the cheese like-rs, there’s still a few cheesy moments but if you hated all cheesy moments all the time then possibly you have a heart of stone. Rather than a rom-com, the film’s a delicate study into the nature of the psychology of love and the constant battle between wants and needs…based on a book about Viagra.

Opens in the USA 24th November 2010 and the UK 29th December 2010
