Affordable And Amazing Wedding Cakes | The Wedding Diary

The craziness of the wedding industry really shows up in the price of wedding cakes. When my fiancé and I first started looking, we couldn’t find one for less than £350, and most of them weren’t even nice. If you take away the fact they have the word ‘wedding’ in front of them, would anyone actually pay thousands of pounds for a cake? I think not.

In saying that, there are a lot out there with the craftsmanship and design that makes the price worthwhile. If you want great design at a good price then I recommend going the supermarket route. My fiancé and I got our wedding cake from Waitrose.com. Marks And Spencers also do great, affordable wedding cakes.

Here are some beautiful wedding cakes from Waitrose.com

waitroseweddingcakeChocolate Wedding Cake – Gold – 3 Tier

chocolateweddingcakeIf chocolate is your thing and you don’t want a traditional cake.

And (drum roll) here is our wedding cake. It matches our wedding colours of pale pink, pale green and white. We love it and got it in a mixed filling of vanilla sponge and fruit cake.

wedding cakeWhen buying a wedding cake make sure you check how many people it serves. The website should tell you or ask your baker. Another thing to check is if decoration is included. Some cakes look amazing but the small print says that the decoration is not included. This is also an easier way to get a cheaper cake, if you decorate it yourself, it costs less. Although there is the added stress.

While researching wedding cakes I saw a lot of gorgeous wedding cake toppers on ebay and ribbon is very cheap to buy from a haberdashery. You could also make your own or get a relative to make one. Although I would not do this if you weren’t brilliant at baking. Waitrose.com also have some guides on decorating your wedding cake and the BBC also have a great blog on making your own wedding cake.

Good luck and let us know about your wedding cake choices.

Convicts Take Over Children’s Charities

Kentucky-based, heavy metal band Corprit Convict is partnering with Kosair Children’s Charity and the Ronald McDonald House in an effort raise money for the children’s hospital and family-housing facilities.

On May 9, 2014, the female-fronted-foursome will be headlining a show at Phoenix Hill Tavern starting at 9:00 pm.  All proceeds earned by the band for that show will go to support both charities.

CONVICTS TAKE OVER CHILDREN'S CHARITIES

On April 22, 2014, the band released their debut, Come Clean, with a portion of the album sales also going to support both charities.

KT (singer) and Evan (drummer) have a deep, personal connection with both charities.  “Our son, Hayden, spent the first 4 weeks of his life at Kosair before he passed away 3 months later.  The nurses there took excellent care of our boy and they were just amazing all around.  I’m so happy we can finally give something back,” – KT.

Kosair Childrens’ Hospital is Kentucky’s only full-service, free-standing pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children and is an advocate for the health and well-being of all children.

Ronald McDonald House Charities is a place families of seriously ill children call home during crisis and uncertainty.  Since opening their doors, they have helped more than 70,000 family members from all 50 states and several international locations.  Since opening their doors 30 years ago, they have given more than $1,000,000 in grants to organizations that support children.

The Duchess of Cambridge Causes Sales Of Yellow Dresses To Soar

duchessofcambridgeeBay, one of the world’s largest marketplaces, has seen a 95%* rise in sales of yellow dresses. This has been triggered by consistent trendsetter HRH The Duchess of Cambridge when spotted wearing citrus tones during The Royal Couple’s 19-day Australian and New Zealand tour.

Arriving in sunny Sydney, Australia wearing a striking, canary yellow pencil dress, Kate looked every inch the immaculate fashionista (despite being cheekily labelled a ‘banana’ by The Duke of Cambridge.) Four days later, Kate was pictured in a pastel number for Easter Sunday at Taronga Zoo with William and George, causing the total sales of yellow dresses on the UK site to almost double during this period.

Kate is not alone in her fondness for the summery hue. The yellow trend is on the up in the UK, with the likes of Susanna Reid pictured in a lemon yellow frock for Good Morning Britain as well as Hollywood sweetheart Emma Stone, who wore a fiery full-length yellow gown to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 premiere in London, last week.

In addition, sales of both floral (+94%)** and green dresses (+88%)*** spiked hugely overnight from the moment Kate was pictured wearing these styles during the tour.

eBay spokesperson, Laura Wilkinson-Rea comments, “The Duchess of Cambridge’s wardrobe undeniably affects what’s in when it comes to style-hunting on eBay, with sales consistently skyrocketing after she is photographed in the latest trend.

Girls, Let’s Talk About Our Vaginas

Right girls, we need to talk about something women don’t talk about enough. It’s the ‘V’ word, yup, our vaginas. Thing is, they are nothing to be ashamed of, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be talking about our vagina. (Keep saying it ‘vagina’)

In fact, Vagisil commissioned a survey of 1,000 women and discovered a shocking lack of knowledge amongst British women about intimate health, as well as a surprising reluctance to talk about their intimate area. As the expert in intimate health, they want to end the lack of knowledge, the whispers, the secrecy and the embarrassment. In fact, 42% of women are uncomfortable even mentioning the word vagina in daily conversation and just a quarter know what the plural for vagina is. Even worse; more than half (52%) would still be embarrassed to ask for advice from a pharmacist or other medical professional if they had an intimate health problem. Nearly a quarter (23%) of British women admit they have never even properly looked at their own vagina. Rather shocking statistics.

lets-do-something-about-it-550x330

It is important to know about your vagina. Too many of us don’t know anything about our own gynecological health, or are too shy to seek help if there is a problem. Vagisil have launched a Let’s Do Something campaign. Check out the video above and let’s get more acquainted with our vagina. It is beautiful and amazing after all.

Fruitvale Station Film Review | Sundance 2014

One of the most praised dramas at Sundance USA last year and early Oscar contender to boot, Fruitvale Station finally got it’s UK bow at this year’s festival. The true story drama has been hoovering up acclaim and awards over the last year and it is very easy to see why. Over the course of December 31st, 08 and January 1st, 09 we track Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a young father and resident of Hayward, California who begins his day determined to turn his life around. Following a spell of recent criminal convictions and prison spells, Oscar is resolved to get his house in order; get a new job, cut off bad habits and treat his family right including his adoring yet straight talking mother (Octavia Spencer). However, this search for redemption is to have a tragic end as a New Year’s Party in the city culminates in a cruel, needless tragedy that leaves the community -and America- in shock.

Fruitvale Station sundance 2014

Having an entire movie rest largely on a single performance is a risky business indeed. If your lead is underwhelming or just flat out doesn’t convince then you and your movie are dead in the water. Debut writer/director Ryan Coogler was surely aware of this going into production on Fruitvale Station. But he must also have been aware when he cast Michael B. Jordan that he really didn’t have to worry much. Still perhaps best known for playing the young, doomed drug dealer Wallace in the exceptional TV series The Wire, Jordan is an absolute flat out revelation here, a breakout role if ever there was one. Throughout Grant’s trials and tribulations over the course of the film, there is the feeling of raw anger and frustration at his surroundings and even many of those who surround him. Yet Jordan never feels like he’s showing off on a soap box like a lot of other ‘awards worthy’ performances have a habit of doing. Every beat, glance and observation feels real and lived in. The story of of fallen man going straight could easily fall into cliche yet the sheer humanity of the performance is more than enough to steer clear of any pitfalls. As mesmerizing as Jordan is it would be unfair to dismiss other cast members especially, Octavia Spencer on blinding form as Oscar’s rock steady mother. Her crumbling composure at the film’s climax is going to break hearts.

As a director, Coogler keeps a steady hand on incendiary material. Make no mistake, this is an angry film and rightly so. Rather than letting that anger disrupt the story and tone, he keeps everything on an even keel. There’s no fuss or confusion to the film’s beautiful and precise shooting. There’s even a touch of playfulness with Oscar’s text messages popping up on screen à la BBC’s Sherlock (don’t worry; it’s nowhere near as gimmicky or intrusive as it could be). We witness actual phone footage of the Fruitvale incident in the films opening act so there’s no surprise to the terrible outcome yet we feel all the gut-wrenching tension and heartbreak as Oscar goes about his daily grind and moves steadily towards his fate. It’s almost unbearably upsetting yet Coogler has managed to find the beauty and tenderness in the frank observations of an individual in his last moments. It’s a paean to life in America in all its wonder – and indeed its horror – and it deserves every bit of your attention.

Wedding Shoes | The Wedding Diary

So I have bought my wedding shoes. It was pretty hard not to put that in capital letters, that’s how excited I am. Well, to be more precise, I have two pairs of wedding shoes. One high and the other (ahem) less high. I completely love the flat shoe trend and wear them all the time, just not on my wedding day. Especially as my husband-to-be is 6.3′. It would be nice to meet his eye on our wedding day.

When I first thought about buying my wedding shoes I was going to buy something quite traditional, a silver, gold or white high-heeled sandal or shoe. In the end I went for colour. A very bright pair of high heels, but comfortable high heels. Yes, there is such a thing. They are peep-toed and after the wedding I will post lots of pictures of them. In the meantime I will post pictures of my evening shoes. They are wedges with a little heel so should be good for dancing the night away. They are a cruise shoe from Hotter and are so comfortable. Far too comfortable for something so stylish. They have built-in underfoot cushioning, soft leather inners and a flexible sole.

I have sourced some amazing wedding shoes in this article so take a look. And remember, you can wear any shoes to your wedding, you don’t need specific wedding shoes, in fact, you will probably save more money if you keep away from the ‘w’ word.
