Girls, Let’s Talk About Our Vaginas

Right girls, we need to talk about something women don’t talk about enough. It’s the ‘V’ word, yup, our vaginas. Thing is, they are nothing to be ashamed of, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be talking about our vagina. (Keep saying it ‘vagina’)

In fact, Vagisil commissioned a survey of 1,000 women and discovered a shocking lack of knowledge amongst British women about intimate health, as well as a surprising reluctance to talk about their intimate area. As the expert in intimate health, they want to end the lack of knowledge, the whispers, the secrecy and the embarrassment. In fact, 42% of women are uncomfortable even mentioning the word vagina in daily conversation and just a quarter know what the plural for vagina is. Even worse; more than half (52%) would still be embarrassed to ask for advice from a pharmacist or other medical professional if they had an intimate health problem. Nearly a quarter (23%) of British women admit they have never even properly looked at their own vagina. Rather shocking statistics.

It is important to know about your vagina. Too many of us don’t know anything about our own gynecological health, or are too shy to seek help if there is a problem. Vagisil have launched a Let’s Do Something campaign. Check out the video above and let’s get more acquainted with our vagina. It is beautiful and amazing after all.

Fruitvale Station Film Review | Sundance 2014

One of the most praised dramas at Sundance USA last year and early Oscar contender to boot, Fruitvale Station finally got it’s UK bow at this year’s festival. The true story drama has been hoovering up acclaim and awards over the last year and it is very easy to see why. Over the course of December 31st, 08 and January 1st, 09 we track Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a young father and resident of Hayward, California who begins his day determined to turn his life around. Following a spell of recent criminal convictions and prison spells, Oscar is resolved to get his house in order; get a new job, cut off bad habits and treat his family right including his adoring yet straight talking mother (Octavia Spencer). However, this search for redemption is to have a tragic end as a New Year’s Party in the city culminates in a cruel, needless tragedy that leaves the community -and America- in shock.

Fruitvale Station sundance 2014

Having an entire movie rest largely on a single performance is a risky business indeed. If your lead is underwhelming or just flat out doesn’t convince then you and your movie are dead in the water. Debut writer/director Ryan Coogler was surely aware of this going into production on Fruitvale Station. But he must also have been aware when he cast Michael B. Jordan that he really didn’t have to worry much. Still perhaps best known for playing the young, doomed drug dealer Wallace in the exceptional TV series The Wire, Jordan is an absolute flat out revelation here, a breakout role if ever there was one. Throughout Grant’s trials and tribulations over the course of the film, there is the feeling of raw anger and frustration at his surroundings and even many of those who surround him. Yet Jordan never feels like he’s showing off on a soap box like a lot of other ‘awards worthy’ performances have a habit of doing. Every beat, glance and observation feels real and lived in. The story of of fallen man going straight could easily fall into cliche yet the sheer humanity of the performance is more than enough to steer clear of any pitfalls. As mesmerizing as Jordan is it would be unfair to dismiss other cast members especially, Octavia Spencer on blinding form as Oscar’s rock steady mother. Her crumbling composure at the film’s climax is going to break hearts.

As a director, Coogler keeps a steady hand on incendiary material. Make no mistake, this is an angry film and rightly so. Rather than letting that anger disrupt the story and tone, he keeps everything on an even keel. There’s no fuss or confusion to the film’s beautiful and precise shooting. There’s even a touch of playfulness with Oscar’s text messages popping up on screen à la BBC’s Sherlock (don’t worry; it’s nowhere near as gimmicky or intrusive as it could be). We witness actual phone footage of the Fruitvale incident in the films opening act so there’s no surprise to the terrible outcome yet we feel all the gut-wrenching tension and heartbreak as Oscar goes about his daily grind and moves steadily towards his fate. It’s almost unbearably upsetting yet Coogler has managed to find the beauty and tenderness in the frank observations of an individual in his last moments. It’s a paean to life in America in all its wonder – and indeed its horror – and it deserves every bit of your attention.

Wedding Shoes | The Wedding Diary

So I have bought my wedding shoes. It was pretty hard not to put that in capital letters, that’s how excited I am. Well, to be more precise, I have two pairs of wedding shoes. One high and the other (ahem) less high. I completely love the flat shoe trend and wear them all the time, just not on my wedding day. Especially as my husband-to-be is 6.3′. It would be nice to meet his eye on our wedding day.

When I first thought about buying my wedding shoes I was going to buy something quite traditional, a silver, gold or white high-heeled sandal or shoe. In the end I went for colour. A very bright pair of high heels, but comfortable high heels. Yes, there is such a thing. They are peep-toed and after the wedding I will post lots of pictures of them. In the meantime I will post pictures of my evening shoes. They are wedges with a little heel so should be good for dancing the night away. They are a cruise shoe from Hotter and are so comfortable. Far too comfortable for something so stylish. They have built-in underfoot cushioning, soft leather inners and a flexible sole.

With wedding shoes you want ‘wow’ and comfort. Something that makes a statement, that won’t cause a lot of pain and that also makes the dress perfect. It is possible that no one will see your shoes, but you will know you are wearing amazing shoes. You could also get some pictures of them taken by the photographer.

I have sourced some amazing wedding shoes in this article so take a look. And remember, you can wear any shoes to your wedding, you don’t need specific wedding shoes, in fact, you will probably save more money if you keep away from the ‘w’ word.

Let me know what you think.

Finding Fennel

fennelFennel is one plant that is more commonly used when dried and in curries. If you are looking for recipes for fennel the bulb itself they can be eaten raw and is delightful added to a salad. Here is a really simple dish you should try. Keep the flavours delicate as fennel has a rather a distinctive aniseed flavour. It pairs really well with celery and Lemon.

IMG_1262
IMG_1278Eaten with a light tomato and basil salad for lunch, it’s a perfect healthy and rather wonderful way to keep your skin clear and also keep those dreaded pounds off too. After a weekend indulging in a few glasses of bubbly or your favourite wine, fennel is an ideal snack as its a diuretic and it has liver protecting properties when eaten raw, so it will help get rid of toxins. It is an amazing source of vitamin C, a good way to get fibre in your diet and not only does it taste great it will help to reduce elevated cholesterol levels. What a wonderful little plant this is!!

Here is a filling and easy dish to prepare for lunch or even a side dish with a nice slab of grilled salmon for supper. I have an amazing salmon and strawberry recipe I will share with you soon too! Keep your eyes out for that. Anyway back to the fennel dish.

You will need:

  • 1 Fennel bulb
  • 1 Lemon
  • 6 celery stalks
  • 2 tbs Olive oil
  • Ground black pepper
  • Tomatoes
  • Basil leaves to garnish

fennel

fennelSlice up the celery and fennel in a food processor.

fennelAdd the freshly squeezed Lemon juice, Olive oil and lashings of black pepper. With clean hands get stuck in and it mix up. Garnish with basil leaves and serve with Sliced beef tomatoes, a drizzle of olive oil and a few basil leaves. Really simple and totally mind blowing on the taste buds.

Little Accidents Film Review | Sundance 2014

Recent news stories of industrial mining accidents across the world linger in the background of this stark, character based drama from debut feature director Sara Colangelo. Expanded from her short film of the same name and assisted via the Sundance Institute’s Writers Lab, the story focuses on a rural Appalachian community devastated by a disaster at the local coal mine which has claimed ten lives. Already people are looking for someone to blame from a legal angle and pressure steadily mounts on the sole survivor of the disaster; Amos Jenkins (Boyd Holbrook) whose testimony could seal some hefty compensation. Meanwhile, one of the kids (Jacob Loflland) of the dead miners struggles with his own grief and sets off a chain of consequences that envelope Bill and Diana Doyle (Josh Lucas and Elizabeth Banks). The former is one of the managers of the coal mine and is a figure of rising blame and anger amongst the locals…

littleaccidentssundance2014

Steeped in an authentic style and filmed entirely on location with no sets, Little Accidents doesn’t have to work hard to convince in its portrayal of an America that’s seldom seen along with those inhabiting it. It’s a place which would probably spring up on Google if you typed ‘small town America’; everyone knows each other and each others business whatever their background and class. The town is presented as its own internal universe. It’s a simmering cauldron of mistrust and quiet rage that boils over in the wake of tragedy and boy does it ever boil over. The films earthy and natural tone perfectly encapsulate this, as well as the authentic environment that includes what appear to be genuine residents appearing as themselves. It’s also bolstered by some really superb performances, most notably from Boyd Holbrook as the haunted Amos. Hindered via a limp and with a thousand yard piercing stare, Amos could prove too sheltered and quiet to engage with the audience, but Holbrook makes it connect finding the perfect manners for a deeply wounded yet profoundly decent everyman.

Where the film does seem a little less sure footed is in later developments. Characters meet and interact in ways that at first seems natural, but as events unfold grow increasingly cliched or even unbelieveable. A subplot which see’s Amos and Diana embark on an affair seems almost redundant; a cheap device to bring their characters and desires closer together and intertwine. Josh Lucas does the best he can (actually the best he’s ever been) as the put upon yet unshakable husband, but even his character’s arc seems very deliberately placed and dropped off without much thought. Performance wise the film is nearly stolen by Jacob Lofland (of Mud fame) who perfectly captures the innocence, anger and uncertainty of youth here compounded by tragic events. A lingering close up of his weary face late in the story provides the film with one its most striking images. It’s he and his fellow actors who hold Little Accidents steady even as it hits occasional rocky ground.

The Wedding Diary: Invites

First, I have to apologise for not updating my Wedding Diary as often as I should. I assure you the wedding is being planned but I underestimated how hard it would be to run a magazine, publish a book while writing another one, be a freelance writer, act and go to auditions, finish two scripts and plan a wedding all at once. I am also sure I missed something out there. To top it all off: we are also moving a couple of days after our wedding. That won’t be stressful at all….

weddinginvitationsSo for my first of many catch-up entries I am going to start with the invites. Now a lot of wedding invites are incredibly expensive. You are talking hundreds of pounds for a piece of cardboard. We were shocked at the prices. If you add in save the date cards and thank you cards, it would be easy to rack up a thousand pounds if you include postage. So what is a frugal girl to do? Ebay. Obviously.

We got beautiful, personalised invitations for a very reasonable price. I won’t show the exact ones at the moment because I haven’t sent them out yet and we don’t want to ruin the surprise of people getting them (or have stalkers turn up at our wedding. I have had a few bad experiences in the past). The invitations are beautiful, come with envelopes and are well made and high quality. Just put ‘wedding invitations’ into the search function of Ebay and you can get some amazing ones for under £50.

We didn’t send out save the date cards because of environmental reasons, and also cost. We emailed and called people instead. The wedding industry is a £10 billion industry in the UK so don’t buy something just because you feel you have to.

When it came to the design of our invitations, we wanted something that reflected us and who we are. Family members will probably try and pull you in a certain way, but we wanted ours to be fresh and fun. Our invites are white, with a multicoloured tree. We are in our twenties so we wanted something to reflect that: nothing stuffy. They also came in a very handy, protective plastic case.

If you want to spend more on your invitations then John Lewis do some beautiful ones, and so do Marks and Spencers and VistaPrint. If you are good at DIY you can also make your own.

What to put on your invites

Your names (we included our surnames as we weren’t sure people would know who we were!)

Date and time of the wedding

RSVP details. Include a non-email option for the older guests. Include a deadline for the RSVP. Needed for the catering and seating.

The venue address and the reception address too if it is different.

Your wedding gift list number. We went with John Lewis and Prezola.com

Other options

Parents details. We decided not to do this but you can include either parents or both.  As in: ‘Mr and Mrs Smith invite *guest name*  to the marriage of their daughter, Chloe, to Matt Fox.’

Dress code. We didn’t put one on as everyone knows weddings are formal. I would only include a dress code if it is anything other than formal. For instance: a themed wedding or black tie.

You can, of course, put whatever you want on your invitations. It is your wedding.

What will you put?

My wedding book is out now. If you are getting married then check out my book The Wedding Survival Guide: How To Plan Your Big Day Without Losing Your Sanity, it has everything you need to know about planning your dream wedding.

Petals & Peplums

IMG_1490

Pretty sunny days require pretty outfits. Weeks and weeks of style inspiration has been gathered and I have been craving a peplum hem skirt. unable to fine one I decided to make one. Such an easy skirt to make too. Just adapt a pencil skirt and add 3-4 times the amount of fabric width and the length you require. Gather, stay stitch, pin right sides together to top half and sew…hey presto you have a peplum hem. I am really loving being really creative again and developing a few vintage patterns and remaking them with a modern twist. I still haven’t decided if I am going to be selling my creations just yet. Developing a range can take years but its something I would love to do. So in my down time I have started to do a little bit of designing and pattern cutting. If we ever won the lottery its something that I would do in a heart beat. This skirt is such a simple item to make for spring. Grab an old pencil skirt that fits you perfectly, unpick carefully and you will have an instant toile/pattern for you to recreate all sorts of designs.

If yo don’t want to make one for yourself you can purchase them on ASOS this one below is priced at £40. Mine cost me £12 and took me 1 hour to make!

Well worth digging out the sewing machine if you have one. Just think of all the money you will save or all the other stunning items you will be able to create. IMG_1310
