The 5 Secrets To Avoiding Acne

amandaeliasFrom Facial Therapist, Skincare Expert & Bravura London founder, Amanda Elias

With hormones going haywire, teenagers can really suffer from a multitude of problems, one of which is dreaded acne. From mild to severe, acne can be extremely traumatic at such a sensitive age but it really is best to address the problem as early as possible and to get your teenager in to a good skincare regime as soon as possible; prevention is much better than cure.

Cleansing

Cleansing is extremely important but choosing the right product is essential.

Avoid cleansing wipes which don’t cleanse the skin thoroughly enough. Older teenagers tend to prefer a cleansing wash that’s applied and rinsed but younger teens don’t always rinse properly, in which case a light cream cleanser removed with a clean face flannel works best.

Application is important, when teaching a younger teen ensure they massage all over the face and neck, close to the hairline and behind the ears and neck. Cleanse twice in the evening and once in the morning.

Use a gentle treatment daily for acne prone skin; if dryness occurs use the product every other day. If your skin burns or feels itchy, gets very red or you break out in a rash, discontinue use.

Hair

A thick fringe (bangs) may be fashionable but it can cause outbreaks in young, oily skin.

Wash the fringe every morning and clip it off the face in the evening and to sleep; trapped dirt and oil will introduce bacteria in to the skin which is why it’s essential to keep any hair that touches the face as clean as possible.

Spot-Control

When spots have a head it is so tempting to squeeze but squeezing will not only introduce bacteria in to the open wound but popping the skin could leave a scar, think of what happens when you pop bubble wrap, imagine your skin with that tear in the surface! Neat tea tree oil applied directly on to the spot can help reduce bacteria and dissolve the blockage on the surface. Perform a patch test on the jaw line before applying tea tree all over as it can cause irritation in sensitive skin.

Avoid strong acne products which can irritate sensitive, young skin. A product such as the Dermaflannel (£11.99, www.bravuralondon.com) is perfect because it gently exfoliates and helps to remove excess oil and dirt from the pores without the need for any harsh chemicals.

Lifestyle

Although skincare can help control and heal breakouts, a healthy and active lifestyle can play a big part.

Vitamins and herbal supplements can also play an important role when combating any skincare complaint; a visit to an herbalist or a specialist in vitamins and supplements could be beneficial in balancing the hormones which in turn will control acne.

Make sure anything that comes in to contact with the face is clean; face flannels, towels, hands! And remember to change your pillow regularly.

Medication

In teenage skin where acne is very severe, the best option is a visit to the Doctor who will usually recommend a course of antibiotics.

Silver Fit For a Bride: The Royal Mint’s Lucky Silver Sixpence | Weddings

It is always the little touches that moves something from great to extraordinary and at Frost we have been knee-deep in wedding stuff, researching and reviewing for our wedding special which will also be turned into a book.

This silver sixpence is one of those little things. It is a wonderful, beautiful and classy touch. The packaging the lucky silver sixpence comes in is stunning, it comes with information and The Royal Mint Lucky Silver Sixpence in a white box. There is also more information on the six pence and a note in an envelope you can give to the bride. This a wonderful little touch for a wedding that can then be passed along the generations.

The Royal Mint Silver Sixpence

A wedding is an occasion that deserves an everlasting gift to mark the joy and happiness experienced by all on the special day, and offering silver to the bride as a token of luck is a long-standing tradition that no wedding should be without.

We all know the traditional wedding rhyme telling brides to wear or carry “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”, but giving the bride a silver sixpence was integral to the original poem. Traditionally, the father of the bride would place this in her left shoe to symbolise him wishing her prosperity, love and happiness in her marriage.

The full text of the verse is:

“Something old, something new,

Something borrowed, something blue,

And a silver sixpence in your shoe”

As no bride should go down the aisle without this silver sixpence, The Royal Mint has a limited number of authentic silver coins which were struck by The Royal Mint between 1920 and 1946 when it was located at Tower Hill in London.

Only the finest of those have been selected that have survived to the present day, and each one has been fully authenticated. Beautifully presented in a bridal-white gift box, it comes with a booklet which can be personalised with your own greetings.

The wedding silver sixpence is available to buy for £30 at The Royal Mint

“Eternal mementos that newlyweds will be able to cherish forever and can be passed on from one generation to the next”

Kizzy’s Cookies Vegan Cookies Review

At the risk of sounding like an old woman; food just isn’t like it used to be. Pesticides, preservatives, GM crops…the list of horrible chemicals and stupid farming tactics seems to grow by the day. You now have to pay more money to eat natural food without all of the nasty chemicals in them. I love organic food. I also love vegan food, small businesses and anyone taking on the food giants. These are all things we support at Frost Magazine: environmentalism and good, natural food.

Which is why Kizzy’s Cookies might go in our hall of fame. These classic chocolate chip cookies are vegan. They are freshly baked and made from scratch without preservatives or chemicals. While some organic and vegan things lack flavour, Kizzy’s Cookies are the best cookies I have ever tasted in my life and our other writers agreed. They also taste fresh and pure. You can really taste the difference.

I predict, and hope for, big things from Kizzy’s Cookies. Frost loves….

Bio:

Ron Littlejohn & the Funk Embassy is a funk collective founded by main songwriters Thierry Matrat and Ron Littlejohn. It’s members have achieved amazing things on their own, including opening for James Brown (Ron) and The Roots (Thierry). The project features Ron Littlejohn on vocals, Thierry Matrat on keyboards, Alana Bridgewater on vocals, Olivier Babaz on bass, Joe Hackl on guitar, Moise Matey on percussion, Dwight Chase on drums, and many other talented musicians contributing to individual tracks.

The project began with Thierry Matrat, who, after a long history as a hip hop artist in France, started the Funk Embassy project in 2009. He began composing music originally with the intention of creating soul/funk songs for rappers. After many collaborations, he decided to switch the project’s focus and hire the best musicians and singers he could find. Craigslist made this happen, and it was Craigslist Toronto that brought Thierry and Ron together.

Unknowingly, Thierry has found the perfect person to help him spearhead the ideal direction for his music. Ron Littlejohn had a long history in the Toronto soul/funk scene with his popular group Planet Earth, who Thierry listened to for “5 seconds before he knew Ron was the singer he was looking for”. Prior to finding Ron, Thierry has advertised in Montreal and found three very notable funk musicians in Olivier Babaz (bass), Joe Hackl (guitar) and Dwight Chase (drums).< Thierry and Ron recorded the initial music by communicating through emails as to what the song structures and melodies should be. Music was then recorded in studio in both Montreal and Toronto. After the initial demos, Ron recommended additional musicians to complete the collective needed for the debut album (Steve Donald, Kevin Turcotte and Alana Bridgewater).Fast forward to Fall 2013, and Ron Littlejohn & The Funk Embassy are preparing to see their album “Shining On” released (Oct 19).

About the inspiration for the title track “Shining On”, Ron says “When I was about to become a father, some friends actually became resentful at the idea of me having new priorities. This hurt me like a bitch. I wrote this song to my unborn daughter trying to tell her no matter how mean the bastards get, keep on shining. I think it’s the best song I’ve ever written. So I thank those negative folks for the inspiration.”

Inspired by their heroes such as Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield,  Marvin Gaye and Al Green, the album was a labor of love, consisting of work and dedication from some of Toronto and Montreal’s best soul/funk artists, ironically brought together by a songwriter from Lyons, France.
